Need help for messed-up link in WtR post

I just noticed that my link to grammaboodawg's Hobbit mileage chart is messed up. It should link to
https://sites.google.com/site/tornswalktorivendell/
but somehow there are some extra characters at the front end of the link and it's after the edit window. sigh. Would one of you lovely mods kindly repair the damage?
I'll be sure to double-check it in time to clean it up next week - but it'd be nice to know why Open Office is throwing extra characters into the code for the link - not that I'm tech-savvy enough to understand the answer!

I don't think knowing why will help much

Word and WordPerfect can and will do the same thing.

When you compose for posts here (or for any web work that matters), you should compose in software that does not allow formatting.

For Windows, this is Notepad. If you have a Mac, we'll need a Mac user to advise what the no formatting software is.

When you're done composing in Notepad, paste it into a TORn compose window and then format it to your heart's desire.

There are other ways to do the same thing. One is to briefly switch to basic editor, paste the text you composed in OpenOffice/Word/etc into the compose window, then switch to Advanced Editor.

When I work with webpages, I do the same thing. All text - no matter where it comes from - gets put into Notepad first before it goes on the web because a lot of stray code from things like Word or emails or other websites can conflict with the code in the site you're now trying to display that text on. And you can't really fix it very easily once the conflicts arise. And some conflicts won't be immediately apparent and some won't be apparent in all browsers. So it might look fine for you on Internet Explorer but not to someone else on Firefox.

I hope that made sense. NEVER compose in Word, et.al. for the web. If you do, strip it of code before pasting it or paste it into Basic Editor and then switch to Advanced Editor.

Would you provide the link

to the post you want edited? Just click on the Copy Shortcut link beneath your avatar and post it here. Thanks.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Found it and edited it.

It was tricky: the URL was garbled, and the page that it linked to after it was cleaned up "didn't exist", so I had to hunt a bit for it, then replace that link with the correct one.

Er, I think it's correct, could you check it out, Arandiel? Thanks! Smile

Mac has TextEdit.

Or at least, the "older" Macs do! Evil

Yes, you got it - thanks!

Sorry for the confusion; I should've copied the bad link and been clearer about the correct version that I put in my original request for help. That's what I get for posting when I'm in a hurry.

So thanks not only for the cleanup, but for wading through my garbled request as well!

It does make sense

Thanks, Magpie!

I know all that hidden formatting code makes things easier when someone is just writing, but it really does get annoying when it stays lurking like an unwanted guest. It's good to know there's a way around it!
