EXCLUSIVE: New Line registers Hobbit movie titles

We have exclusive and reliable news from Ringer Spy Thrush that New Line has registered the following film titles:

  • The Desolation of Smaug

  • The Battle of Five Armies

  • The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

  • The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies

Apparently this doesn't mean New Line is definitely going to use one, or both, or either of them! Our spy tells us that because they must register their eventual title, studios often register multiple titles. One could suggest, based on these titles, that maybe we'll have a change to the first film title? That 'An Unexpected Journey' memorabilia would sure increase in value!  We've included some completely fan made versions of the movie title logos below! Enjoy!

What about "There and Back Again"?

Frown
Both titles are fine by me. I was hoping that There and Back Again would still be used:

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
The Hobbit: There and Back Again

It doesn't matter if the titles don't full represent what's in the films Tongue.

Can we expect confirmation pretty soon then?

I like your three choices, Daniel

Maybe they haven't made their minds up and are covering all possibilities, but I think 'There and Back Again' is far more suited to the end of Bilbo's story than 'Battle of Five Armies'

If this is reliable

I think they roughly reveal what the structure of the 3 films will be.

1. From the Shire to Thranduil's Halls
2. From Thranduil's Halls to the Lonely Mountain
3. The Battle of Five Armies and back to the Shire

The only change to film 1 that I can imagine is that instead of the conclusion being Barrels out of Bond, we end on a cliffhanger, with the dwarves captured and Bilbo at a loss. But I doubt that. Based on how the LOTR films ended, I imagine PJ will want to give the audience a hopeful sign that the journey is progressing to its destination, and the perfect place for that is Bilbo on a barrel looking ahead and seeing the Lonely Mountain far off in the distance.

Ehhhhh....

I always hate spoilery titles. Yes, we expect the dragon to be defeated, but why take that away with the title? It's plot related instead of theme related. Also makes it sound a bit generic, don't you think?

This is hardly an exclusive. This news came out yesterday from a company that monitors domain registrations. These titles are not fact, but speculation based upon those registered domains.

The Desolation of Smaug doesn't suggest that he's been defeated

As the desolation was there well before he was killed. All it refers to is the desolation caused by Smaug...You know, a ruined Dale, and a bit of a blasted landscape around the mountain...

I also find it rather unimaginative, though...

I like these three the best as well.

"Battle of Five Armies" seems like an awkward title for a film which I am hoping will end with Bilbo back in Hobbiton again.

"There and Back Again" is just so perfect on every level.

The heart breaks...

"An Unexpected Journey" and "There and Back Again" were such perfect titles for the Hobbit films. They were completely in the spirit of Bilbo's journey. These new titles reek of "EPIC Lord of the Rings Prequel!"

I will be so sad if "There and Back Again" is not used as the final film's title. Unsure

Agreed on the old titles being better

Though my main concern is whether or not these films will be good, not what their names are. And at this point, I am inclined to believe that these films will benefit if PJ has more time, and more luxury to keep everything that's in the books in the films.

Since that happened long before the main story opens...

...it seems an odd choice, even for a middle film of three.

Unless they're going to include a bunch of the backstory in the second film, which would be a huge momentum killer.

I'd prefer they stuck with AUJ and TABA, with TDOS for the middle chapter.

My Top 5 Wish List for "The Hobbit"
5. Legolas will surf down Smaug's neck
4. Bilbo will be revealed to a Robot
3. Naked PJ cameo as Ghan-Buri-Ghan
2. Use of not only 3D, but smell-o-vision, plus the inclusion of axes coming out of the seats and poking the audience when appropriate
1. Not only keep the claim that Thorin & Co. ran amok in Mirkwood "molesting people", but depict said incident in vivid detail!!!!!

Yes, AUJ and TABA were SO perfect. TBOFA in particular is just cumbersome as a title, and

I seem to recall some detractors referring to TTT as "Peter Jackon's Helm's Deep" back in 2002...imagine the ribbing if they actually name the entire third film after the major action setpiece and not Bilbo's exploits.

When you consider the framing device. "There and Back Again" both referring to Bilbo's journey and our going back and forward in time. But I still feel that these are film 2 and 3's titles. Makes me think that film 1 should be re-titled "An Unexpected Party"

Oh, shouting in the wind's not that uncommon round here...

so is banging your head on a brick wall! Wink

As for 'There and Back Again', you're right that it's a good sub-title for the whole thing...

On the other hand, it works for film three because Bilbo is already 'There' at the start of the film, and before it ends he goes back again....

I'm not keen on 'Battle of the five Armies' as it tells you what's going to happen. But as SA says, it's what's in the film that really counts, not what they call them.

The titles should reflect the characters' journey

The story is not about "killing the dragon" or "The Battle of the Five Armies" (though moreso than the former), it's about the journey of Bilbo and the Dwarves. The titles should, in turn, reflect that. The two titles were so whimsical, and these just seem generic.

"The Gathering of the Clouds" is more poetic than Bo5A

... and it could work, especially if they treat the Bo5A as similar to Helm's Deep, that is as one battle in anticipation of a final battle and perchance "the end of all things."

As a title for film 3 though it would take on a different meaning than it has as a chapter title in the book (obviously).

ETA: As "An Unexpected Journey" technically plays with the title "An Unexpected Party," I wouldn't mind if they called film 3 "The Gathering Storm" for the same reason stated above, and above Wink

Ah, being there vs going there

I've always figured "back again" implied "there" to be short hand for "going there," that "there" describes a journey rather than a place. But I see now how this could make sense... thanks for pointing that out dormouse.

Titles with a "... of ..." pattern, typically fantasy related, feel a bit tired and wannabe-epic.

So I dearly hope these titles are NOT the ones to be used. In contrast, "An unexpected Journey" and "There and Back again" in particular sound original and inspired, it would be unwise to discard these needlessly. They just need to come up with a new creative title for the middle film.

I think both TDOS and BO5A look epic!

I have to admit that I wouldn't mind also seeing a version for "Riddles in the Dark".

That being said, I think it is a matter of a choice of two goods and figuring out which is better and more popular - rather than a matter of whether or not either is any good (and that's my opinion).

Between these two visions for the epic trilogy:
1 An Unexpected Journey
2 Riddles in the Dark
3 There and Back Again

1 An Unexpected Journey
2 The Desolation of Smaug
3 The Battle of Five Armies

I'd say the first puts the emphasis on character development and the journey (my personal favorite) while the second puts the emphasis on epic battles and politics (currently popular today according to what I hear from other fans).

It's down to a matter of taste and preference, now. Either way things fall, it seems that most of the story will be there and it will be done justice and be fun to watch.

Show or do not show, there is no tell.

I like that. Fire and Water. Instead of the other titles that focus directly to some Hobbit´s events.

I hope they keep the original titles, and name the middle-movie with something related with Bilbo´s journey, after all The Hobbit is Bilbo´s journey, and so Unexpected Journey and There and Back Again.

The middle title needs to be the same style of Unexpected Journey and There and Back Again, or something close. Not an specific event CrazyCrazy

If not they will need to change all titles... I guess

By both rumours, do you mean this one as well as

the domain names one? Registering domain names is as much about staking out territory as it is about one's intentions to actually use the name for something.

Perhaps they have some games in mind, or even the names of theme park rides, and are simply trying to block others from capitalizing on the names in future?

How Thorin learns to be more generous: valuing food, cheer and song over hoarded gold. But Bilbo seems to learn the exact opposite lesson when he goes home and hoards his earnings in Bag End after kicking the Sackville-Bagginses out - who BTW were only trying to share with the hobbit community! Bilbo's return home is a little like Thorin's greed-driven attempt to reclaim his gold. Crazy

I truly believe that the Desolation of Smaug and The Battle of Five Armies would be great video games.

Look at the Lord of the Rings video games that have come out the last several years:

The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest

The Lord of the Rings Online: Riders of Rohan

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
The Hobbit: Fire and Water
The Hobbit: The Gathering of the Clouds

And I demand a short film on the blu-ray disk set titled "The Hobbit: Roast Mutton"

They can still use "There and Back Again"

The titles don't have to fully represent the content of each film. In film 3, Bilbo is still "there" (Erebor), and still goes "back again" (Hobbiton). No need to change it.

I agree to that :D

So the only new name could be "Fire and Water" which I've now grown to like very much! ^^

No clouds please!

One of the most cliched notions of chapter titling or subtitling always has something to do with clouds, storms or gathering. It's way too obvious "The Gathering Shadow", "The Gathering Clouds" "The Gathering Evil" "The Dark Storm". I think Robert Jordan's last book (post-humous) has a subtitle like "Gathering Clouds". No thank you! It's about as irksome as the use of "Rise of .." in a title.

Regardless, the only title that doesn't bother me much out of that list is Desolation of Smaug, just because I don't think I've ever seen the word Desolation in a title before, so, it's got points for standing out.

I always found the actual name of the battle "Battle of the Five Armies" to be distinctly cheesy, even if it's in Tolkien's work. Anything other than that, please.

* Yes, I know, big assumption. Just go with me for the purpose of humour.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

I think it's better than "Riddles in the Dark" or "Battle of Five Armies"

It may not be totally relevant to the story, but I think it's a title that stands-out.

Wow.

Next summer? That's a hell of a gap between filming. Maybe they need that much time to do 48 FPS final renders of Smaug? Oh well. It better be worth it or they will have a worldwide riot on their hands. Wink

What I'm wondering

Is how they are going to pull this off if Freeman is shooting Sherlock's third season that summer.

Unless, of course, Bilbo is not called for in this block of shooting.

I'm assuming that these titles are just "in addition" to There and Back Again, which...

is probably still planned to be the final title, with one of the newly registered titles being for the middle film.

Dang, now it'll be 2014 before I see all of The Hobbit.

Sherlock Series 3

Will shoot from January 2013 to March/April 2013 according to both Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch. Both would be free for a Summer filming if they don't have any other contracts signed already. So there would be no problem to have Bilbo and Smaug back

I like this set best. It retains the original two titles as the first and last movies, just as before. The Desolation Of Smaug is great as the filler because that's where the fate of Smaug should be told. 'Desolation' is a good, strong, dramatic word. And Smaug is the primary endpoint of the company (until it results in the battle) and so his name belongs in the title. Finally it's a chapter title, and a good, descriptive one to end movie number 2.

The problem for me is that these names sound like chapter titles...

... unlike "An Unexpected Journey" and "There And Back Again", which actually sounded like film titles because they weren't about a specific event in the book, but had an overarching meaning.

I really hope they can come up with film titles that aren't just chapter titles. Ugh! Unimpressed

The Battle of Five Armies would be an epic title

Some could think it's cheesy or whatever but I wouldn't mind if this took over There and Back Again for film3, I think Bilbo deciding what to name his book with Frodo is enough to have "there and back again" referenced in the movies, or it could even just be left as it is in LOTR

It was confirmed by a user on here that 3 months of additional filming was required next year (mainly for BO5A). That was before the 3rd film was announced.

The Hobbit and the Wizard's Gang
The Hobbit and the Chamber of Gollum
The Hobbit and the Prisoner of Thranduil
The Hobbit and the Golden Goblet
The Hobbit and the Order of the Dwarves
The Hobbit and the Full-Blood Raven
The Hobbit and the Deadly Dragon - Part 1
The Hobbit and the Deadly Dragon - Part 2

Not as funny as I'd hope it would be Unsure

Possible story structure repercussions...

While I agree that the title There and Back Again should remain for the last film of the trilogy this may change due to the effect three films now has on the structure of the story. Primarily will they reveal the dragon in the middle film? The Desolation of Smaug is certainly a worthy title for the middle chapter but can they get away with using it if that film doesn't feature said character?

I liked Flies and Spiders, but it didn't fit

1: The Hobbit: The Fellowship of Thorin
2: The Hobbit: The Two Towns
3: The Hobbit: The Return of the King (Under the Mountain)

Just being silly.

I like having chapter-title based film titles, and I quite like A Thief in the Night and Fire and Water as possible film titles. Desolation of Smaug probably has the most movie-like ring to it, though.
