As of right now - The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey still set for Dec 14th 2012

There have been a variety of rumblings out there today about the possibility of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey being delayed until December 26th 2012. A studio source has told us this is not true. The release date is December 14th 2012. Now, who's ready for Comic-Con?!?

What rumblings have there been then?

I hadn't realised there were any for the US release date? Just the UK.

Change for the UK

It's been published on a few sites that the British release has been put back to the 26th December.

This thing all things devours:
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats high mountain down.

Don't panic! No change for the U.S.

I think there was some confusion. The pressing question has always been about the U.K. release date which we're trying to confirm.

This is how rumors get started, lol! Laugh

Oh, sugar!

I'd hoped that my fears would be abated, but they are only confirmed. It'll be even harder to get everyone together for a group viewing just after Christmas... Frown

Considering its the day after Christmas Day

I'm pretty sure people will be quite busy with visiting relatives and such like. Myself, personally will most likely be working that day as its bank holiday, and then off to watch my local football team play in the afternoon. So, looks like either an evening screening, or (as little as I want to think about this right now) forgoing seeing it opening night and seeing it another day.

I would have been happy for it to be released on the 14th, but now I (like many others) will have to wait almost two weeks longer to see it. Looks like I'm staying away from here for those 12 days.

Those rumblings were only about the UK release

So I think there was no reason to put up a post assuring everyone that the US release will be on Dec 14, as that was never in question...

This notice, I'm afraid, has only caused more confusion! Smile

But we're still panicking about the UK, right?

All we want (she said, pathetically, referring not to everyone, of course, only to anyone in the UK who is put out about this... Wink) al we want is to be able to share all the fun of the release with the rest of you. If our release date has been put back we (see above) are going to have to avoid TORn for two weeks, which seems rotten after we've shared years of anticipation and build-up....

We're not going to avoid TORn because of spoilers...

We're simply going on strike in outrage. Tongue We will be sat chanting with picket signs in cinemas until The Hobbit appears on screen and we shall refuse to move, even if it takes two weeks!

Considering that the UK was the home of our good professor....

It would be small wonder that many Tolkien fans would be (justifiably) angry, myself included. I think that if PJ made the decision to postpone the movies in the UK he would be dead within a month, impaled upon a replica of Glamdring.Unsure

Who would remaster LOTR, then film the Silmarillion and a separate CoH film?!

Killing him would be a bit extreme. How about kidnapping him until he gives us all a part in TABA, any replica we desire, lifetime passess to WETA, Stone Street Studies and Hobbiton movie set, and letting us all watch the film before the opening day!

Deal?

I have some rope in the garage.

I certainly am not in favour of that scenario either..

but some people are driven mad by anger (I've been told). Anyway I was not being serious.Wink

Especially since

you'd think it would cut down on piracy issues a bit. Strange are the ways of studio executives.

"Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them.
Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you."

26th clashes with The Great Gatsby

which is another Warner Brothers 3D release so I'm confident that they wouldn't put them against each other. Plus we were one of the strongest markets not only for Lord of the Rings (which had similar release dates) but for last year's Sherlock Holmes, also Warner Brothers and also released on the same Friday slot in mid-December (16th) - does great business at the start, holds for the school holidays and then gets a bump Boxing Day (and the couple of days after that). The Hobbit will be the same (except even bigger). I'm sure the original post was referring to the UK.

For what it's worth (which might not be much!) I'm a manager in a UK cinema and we've had nothing changed on our film schedules.
