Unfortunately I can't watch it during my work.Frown

Far over the misty mountains cold

To dungeons deep and caverns old

We must away ere break of day

To seek the pale enchanted gold.

Interesting stuff I noted

1. The barrel scene has gotten a descent amount of air time in this video, as well as past ones. This seems to confirm that it will be in the first movie.
2. The barrels in said scene will be topless for at least part of the journey. This isn't to say that they didn't have tops at one point, they may have been knocked off.
3. As I speculated in a thread a while ago, Gloin's weapons are the same as Gimli's from the trilogy.
4. There are trees on fire, most likely the ones that the company is rescued from.
5. Alan Lee is shown in the makeup chair with a wig on. Most likely another cameo. Citizen of Laketown perhaps?
6. A short of Alan Lee with the infamous "bunny-sled" aka Radagast's hare-powered mode of transport.
7. John Howe sitting on a giant wooden chair in an unknown location. I would hazard a guess and say that it is from Beorn's house.
8. Luke Evans and Billy Connolly make their first appearances in the blog.
9. We are taken to "a scene in the troll cave". If you look carefully, a guy walks by with what appears to be Orcrist and Glamdring. This leads me to believe that Glamdring's origin will be from the troll-hoard, as it is in the book. (Some people had speculated that Gandalf would always have his sword in the films.)
10. An interesting shot inside of Weta Workshop of someone riding on top of some hairy, white thing. I have no idea what this is.
11. A great twist at the end. I won't blow it for you if you haven't seen it yet, but I will say that an old friend makes an appearance.

warg I think

that's what came to mind first when I saw the guy riding that thing. For the "out of the frying pan into the fire" scene. Yes, lots of barrel riding. The barrel cart was funny. And the camera work for the vlog was rather....um....graceful ;)

Update!

The doubles look amazing! Exactly like the originals, not as rubber-masky as the ones in LotR.
And that wolf? Richard is riding at around 11:30 even moves like a real animal and not like a barrel!

Thanks for the heads-up, maut. I do love the way the vlogs show a bit of everyone involved in the production - it's not just a PJ show.

And the bit at the end was classic. Smile

I suggest liberal use of the pause button

I kept trying to pause on those two swords and the bit where you see a couple of the dwarves looking through the troll hoard. Dang it. Now I just went up a few ticks on the Can't Wait-O-Meter!

Think its a pony

The color of the thing Richard is riding seems identical to one of the dwarf ponies we've seen in the other vlogs.

This was a hilarious video. I love these things.

For some reason, I have always been fascinated by the troll cave, and I was delighted to see it here. Looked great.

Number 2 confirms what I said a while back.

Other observations (will have to wait for screencaps for closer looks)

- Some of the orc costumes were very similar to the warg riders from LOTR
- Silvester (Radagast) was having his wig put on (looked grey to me?)
- Lightning as the company try and find a place to rest
- A very wet Bilbo and Bofur

I cannot wait for the theonering.net inspection crew

to come it over and give us a ton of still photos and evaluations.

From the vlog I know several things for certain already. . .

The scene from the trailer is of Gandalf at the Trollshaws (the staff strike heralding sunrise).

The Wargs/Orcs burning trees is in! Even if we don't know exactly how it will be handled.

Pretty sure the back of a new warg design was in there somewhere??

LMAO LOLOLOLOL!!! Hilarious. I hope they WON'T be basing Smaug's face on Falkor's. That said, it certainly would not hurt if they made the wargs look more like Gmork. Great movie.

PJ: Hi, so welcome to our new blog. We've taken you away with us on location, but we thought that today you might enjoy having a little look into our studio, Stone Street. The public obviously aren't allowed in here while we're shooting. "Morning!" but we thought it would be great to give you all a private little tour around the world of The Hobbit here at Stone Street and Miramar, New Zealand. Used to be an old paint factory. We got hold of it just before we started Lord of the Rings, we built one sound studio for Lord of the Rings, we built another one on King Kong, and we built a couple more here for The Hobbit. And it's actually a great place to make movies right now.

Helene Takacs: Hi! This is Lot 4, the production office. Come on in. This is office, and our boss, Brigitte Yorke.

Brigitte: ?, must get the ? for Howard Shore.

Billy Connoly: I'm working very hard on this folder here.

Brigitte: Have you got some filing skills?

Uncredited man: It's Top Secret. You can't see it.

Billy: Yes, I'm learning how to open it and close it.

Brigitte: Emma, processing contracts, and the mother frater? of 3-Foot-7. Kate Mulligan will find you whatever crazy thing you need, and this is Rache, she coordinates and distributes all our script revisions.

Rachel Gilkison: Hi there, I've just got some urgent script revisions to go out to all cast immediately so I'm just going to hand these ones over to Mike, he's going to take them over to Jimmy Nesbitt for us.

Mike:
*knocks on trailer door*: Jimmy, pages.

James Nesbitt: Yeah, don't look me directly in the eyes. Oh, hello! *looks through pages* Thorin...Bard...Gandalf... *tosses pages* Nothing for me. Come in! And see the world that we inhabit here for the last 25 years. Decorated the trailer with things that remind me of home. Villages, and the seaside in Northern Ireland where I'm from, my horse Riverside Theatre, that was Martin, he plays, um.....one of the characters in this. And there's the main character, me, Bofur.

Luke Evans: Hi everybody. My name's Luke Evans and I play Bard. I'm going to take you on a little trip round the trailer park. We have 21 trailers, where we've been living for the last seven and a half years. This is Aidan, Kili, he's my neighbor.

Aidan:
Oh, look at this. Who the hell are these guys?

Luke: I don't know, they're just...I'm trying to show them round. .... Steven?

Steven Hunter: How are you?

Luke: It's a long time we spend here sometimes, isn't it, when they're setting up scenes and things like that it takes a long time, so...

Steven: It's like flatting, isn't it?

Luke:
Basically. What's flatting? .... Deano! They keep all the young, goodlooking lads at one end, see. All the ugly buggers, they just don't want to mess with us.

Dean Gorman:
*nods*

John Callen
and Mark Hadlow *scowling out the trailer door*
Mark: Ooh, that was rubbish! Where's the green ?

Peter Hambleton: Good morning! And welcome to Stone Street, I'm just off to my prosthetics. Morning, all. Ok, so this is my spot currently, with the lovely Rachel. Now we're about to start the process. Come and see me again in a couple of hours, when I'll look radically different. Two hours later...here we are!

Byron Darling:
Hey Peter, we are travelling in 5.

Peter: 'K!

Byron: Hey guys, come with me, I'll take you to the ADs Portacom. Home for a lot of us.

Guy Campbell: So down here in the ADs Portacom, we've got 11 ADs who work on Main Unit. We come up with a bit of a plan and then we run it from here. So, on with the show!

Byron:
Locations department decided to put some beautiful pictures up of sunny New Zealand. Here in Wellington, we get sunny days, but they are few and far between. We get a lot of rain.

Bombur,
getting out of cart: "I've got a wet ass!"

Byron: ...but we also get hail. Lots of hail. Come on in to Block 3, there's some busy little bees down here.

Stunt Portacom - stunties fighting with green swords.

Steven McMichael: Hey guys, how you doin? Welcome to the Hobbit stunt department. I just died. Ok, so this is the intensity we like to bring on set every day. Hopefully you enjoy it. Ok, come on guys, let's go! We're on set, let's go!

Peter King: Hi, welcome to the Hair and Makeup Department. Here we on Day 5,953 of shooting and we're now actually trying to repair the wigs that have been doing the barrel sequence for the past three days. As you can see, this wig's a lovely natural blond colour, whereas the other wigs that I've got here, which have been bleached and so now I have to try to turn these wigs back into this wig. So that's my job for the rest of the day, to get all the wigs ready for Monday.

Ann Maskrey: Here we are in the costume workshop, and we've got racks lined up here for all our dwarves, because we've got to do constant repeats for the stunt doubles, the photo doubles. Then we've got our flesh
factory, where three people have been making the dwarf fatsuit components.

PJ: So this is A Stage. This is the stage that we built in time for Lord of the Rings. It was our biggest stage then so we did things like Elrond's chamber at Rivendell where the Council of Elrond took place. B Stage, amazingly enough, has been used for a lot of shooting. There was a lot of Lord of the Rings; Bag End was built here in B Stage, you can hardly call it a studio, really, it's just an old tin shed. Kind of feels a bit like I'm driving the tram at Universal Studios, I guess. Over here we do have our biggest sound stage, which is called K Stage, K being named after King Kong.

Jared Connon: We've had some pretty big set pieces in here recently. Mirkwood Forest, and some of the Trollshaw Forest scenes. Here we have F and G, these are our two newest stages, being built specifically for The Hobbit. They've pretty much got the latest technology inside them and rather large extraction units for all those fires and flames and smoke.

PJ:
At the very end of the studios, is the Art Department, the home of Dan Hennah, Alan Lee and John Howe.

Jack Tippler: Morning guys, welcome to the Art Department. Come on in, I think the Prodcution Designer is in. G'Day, Dan!

Dan Hennah: Hello, dear boy. We've got six weeks and two days of principal photography left. We're shooting the sluices at the moment, which is Film 1 sets. We're very busy.

Jack: And this over here is our Set Decorator, Ra Vincent.

Ra: Hi. Come with me, I've got something very cool to show you. This is my favorite place. It brings into play all of the ideas from all the individual contributors in the Art Department and they get to share all their ideas in here. And this is where the first spark of inspiration begins. ...and in this office is Alan Lee and John Howe.

Alan:
I'm Alan.

John:
I'm John. Good afternoon.

Alan: We basically sit here all day long doing drawings.

John:
Three years of it. Couple of thousand drawings each, and amazingly enough, we're still having fun. We see the light at the end of the tunnel. We thought for a second, "Ooh, it might be a train" but it turns out it's a dragon.

Simon Bright: Come through this way, I'll take you to the Model Makers. Our calligrapher, Daniel Reeve. And this way, to the model makers. So we have many models we have to make. We've done approximately 115 sets to date, and each one of those sets we try to make a model to show Peter before we begin construction.

PJ:
That kind of thing is nice.

Simon: We've got this model we showed Peter this morning, there's a few adjustments we have to make for it and then we'll be straight into construction of this. We shoot this in one week's time.

Bruno Du Bois:
Welcome ? on the F Stage, come on. That's where Main Unit is shooting today. We're doing a scene here for Film 1, it's a scene in the troll cave. So follow me, we'll come here...Zane, our lovely producer, Ian and Richard leaving, and follow me we'll go on set, but quietly. They are rehearsing there.

Corrin Ellingford: I'm Corrin, I'm the boom swinger, and this is Tony, the sound recordist. These are some of the newer stages, have soundproofing, which makes it fantastic for us, being as there's an airport just over the hill that way.

Ants Farrell: This is the first production that's been in here, and one of the biggest things is this head room up here now so the guys can walk all the way down these walkways without bumping their head on stuff.

Matt Andrews: I'm a specialist roof-dweller. It's handy if you don't have a fear of heights. Very embarrassing if you drop something; cost you two dozen beer.

Bruno: But now we just gonna "Shh!" walk away...they're gonna shoot.

8:53, Martin being pushed in a barrel around the lot.

Dion Hartley: Hi, my name's Dion, I'm Head of Technology on The Hobbit. Just going to show you through my office and my space, known as The Tin Shed. Come on in! We look after the technology. Rigs, cameras. This rig here is a surface rig for shooting on water. Going in the next couple of days to shoot a very exciting sequence with the dwarves. She's all wireless and made here in Wellington over the last couple of weeks.

Dave Brown: Well, G'day! You've seen some pretty good technology back there in the Tin Shed, I understand. Come have a look out here, because this is pretty basic technology. This is where we built a humongous greenscreen. This is called the Back Lot. Now, the Back Lot is where we shoot all sorts of the outdoor scenes. They can be battle scenes, they can be wet sets, and obviously, being a green screen the backgrounds can be changed later on in post production. Have a look down here. Well now you can see we're on top of the green screen. This rig up here is a rig designed by Tony ?, the Key Grip. This rig holds huge shade cloth to block the sun off when we're filming. We don't want the sun coming in and out of the cloud all day. Crikey, what's going on down here?

Various players:

This is 9-square.

It's pretty complicated.

Get the ball, hit it to the next player, get it out of your square as quickly as possible.

Anything on the line is always contentious.

It's all about attitude. Do not give in, do not make eye contact, make your call with pride.

You lie your way through.

It's always the umpire's call.

The Ref is always right!

All: *can't make this out*

Jamie Wilson: Guys, please, I'm trying to do some...*stabs ball* This is where we store the Lead weapons. You can see a multitude of boxes. Each box is one lead character's weapons. This is Gloin's box of beauties and they belong to Gimli in LOTR and Gloin his father for The Hobbit.

And...Action!

Fili: Gloin!

Jamie: They are in fact the same axe, they've just been made in two different sizes. I think we've now reached about four scales for every weapon we make. Probably about time that you went down to see who made all these weapons. Weta Workshop. Very easy, just round the corner. Out the front drive, make sure you take a right. You go past the Thai place, then turn left. Go all the way down the end of the road, don't stop till you get to the end. The road is 90 degrees turn, you need to turn otherwise you'll hit Weta Workshop.

Richard Taylor: Hi you guys, come on in. It's pretty crazy at the moment. Come on down here. It's all cast weapons end up and clean up and this young chap Alec is madly trying to get the axes finished. Bowstrings, weapons lined up for the day's painting. So Kelly's just putting the aging pass on quite a decent croquet hammer. Another painting area. This is models, the milling department, injection molding, out of this gun, spraying, trimming, sanding, *riding white beast - warg?*, engineering, bending, cutting, dyeing, sculpting, mold-making, flashing, baking, foam filling. And then for every one of the lead actors that has a full prosthetic, and of course with Bifur, his axe. We also make scale doubles of these.

Welcome to the Scaley Portacom.

Hi, I'm Cally.
I'm Sophie.
I'm Brendan, and this is Bifur, the hopeless romantic.

Cally: We're scale doubles, so we spend a lot of time being short.

Brendan: We're paid to be short.

Cally: They wanted us for our bodies.

Brett Beattie: Have you guys seen the behind the scenes team yet?

Kiran Shah
: I know where they are! Follow me!

Doubles:
See you later! Bye!

PJ: What are you doing?

Orlando:
I've been filming the blog. It's like a pet project.

PJ: Filming the blog. Well, that's very good, but shouldn't you be killing orcs or something?

Orlando: Shouldn't you be directing a movie?

PJ:
Yeah. Right, so here we are at the end of the blog. Hope you've enjoyed this tour around our little world down here in Miramar New Zealand.

Orlando: I hope you particularly enjoyed the camera work.

PJ: I thought it was terrific.

Orlando: Wonderful.

PJ: In fact, I think we should take that wig off and get you behind the camera. I'll take over the role, don't worry.

Kiran:
What can I do now?

PJ: You want to be Legolas?

Orlando: Yeah! We should put Kiran on as Legolas!

PJ: Kiran as Legolas. It's a done deal. Hey, so we're going to come back with another blog when we wrap in a few weeks' time, or shortly after we wrap, so look forward to our final blog of our shooting period. Coming up soon!

Orlando: The bitter end.

PJ: The happy end!

Orlando: The happy end!

And...Kiran as Legolas!

They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them.
Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you."

Not to be picky but

Orlando was holding the camera wrong. Why is it actors who spend so much time around cameramen, never seem to learn how too look like they are really using a camera? :)

All artists are prepared to suffer for their work, but why are so few prepared to learn to draw? :BANKSY

Yes, we learn nothing of the finished product, but I found the vlog hilarious (and not laughed before at any before). They also reveal a lot of snippets that are worth getting excited over.

Because it's good to see something new?

Because there are lots of snippets and details there if you look for them - and even if they aren't particularly significant, people enjoy trying to spot things and speculating and guessing about them.

Because it's a little glimpse of what's happening.

It's harmless fun, that's all. After all, they're hardly going to release the film yet, are they?

I'm supposed to be doing two essays in an open exam but I thought -who firggin cares-?

So, the main things that I loved and noticed:

the AWESOME dwarven hammers and long weapons in WETA workshop.

Pronunciation of "Gloin" --> suspect.

All of the barrel scenes seem to be with them at the top visible... CrazyUnimpressed.... oh well.

Loved the Troll Cave with the treasure etc.

Can't really remember anything else.

Bye people I'm off to do those essays!!! FrownFrown

I'm pretty sure those brilliant melee weapons we saw in WETA workshop were some of the arsenal of Dáin's army

They look fantastic, and kinda remind me of Warhammer (miniature game) but made into real life LOL

Cool

'Gloyn' is still bugging me slightly. Anyone also notice that Bifur used his Axe-in-the-Head --IN-- Combat, whilst they were doing the stunt arcade play around???

The trees on fire bit was cool too Smile. Probably part of the Out of the Frying pan into the Fire scene

Oh wow.

I'm sorry you do not enjoy them. You are, of course, entitled to your opinion.

But I find all of them awesome. I think the humor is clever--I have laughed out loud at several bits i.e. the person sleeping while the sword battle was going on in the parking lot and the bit at the end with Kiran in Legolas wig. The people are very dear to me, and that's why I love to see them clowning.

As for not learning more about the movies, again, I disagree. We have learned, over the course of the vlogs, what the dwarves will look like, some of the scenes that will be in the movies, how they are made, and we are introduced to who is making them, so that we bond a bit with them, too. And the sneek peeks of Saurman (at the end of a previous one) and Legolas (on this one) are just big bonuses.

These are a tease with enough in them to tell us about the production without spoiling it seriously for us. I love them, and truly hope they will be on the blu-rays.

But, what types of things would you like to see on the last one?

BRILLIANT.

It took me an hour and a half to watch this on my crappy Internet (and pausing every five seconds), but so incredibly worth it. I've noticed that they've started to be more secretive with stuff—blurring out art that's hanging around, and refusing to let us see Film 2 stuff. (But we saw so much Laketown stuff, I wonder what that model could have been? Smaug's lair complete with mini-Smaug?)

At 2:57, I think we might have confirmation of lady dwarves, which we've seen vaguely in fits and spurts; all the prosthetics are mounted on notecards, and if the first name is the actor for whom the prosthetic is intended, instead of anything else, there's an Amy Brighton who is getting a small rounded nose prosthetic.

Other than that, I'm pleased as punch to find that the amazing Brett Beattie is scale doubling for Fili. I was rewatching The Two Towers the other night and was just remembering how much work and love he put into doubling for Gimli.

And the cameo at the end is brilliant. I've enjoyed seeing Bloom mature over the past few years; if The Three Musketeers is any indication, he's become comfortable with his career in "genre" films (I hate that terminology, and yet what I else can I use?) and doesn't take himself too seriously. Sure, he's not the greatest actor ever, but he seems to have his head on straight and willing to work. And it's great to see him tease Jackson and Kiran and clearly having a ball.

That's what I'm so impressed by in these vlogs; the care, dedication, and love that's going into this and that exists between these people.

The Glamdring-story

"We are taken to "a scene in the troll cave". If you look carefully, a guy walks by with what appears to be Orcrist and Glamdring. This leads me to believe that Glamdring's origin will be from the troll-hoard, as it is in the book. (Some people had speculated that Gandalf would always have his sword in the films.)"

Yes, I think, Glamdring will be there in that troll-cave.
But in the trailer Gandalf was figting in Dol Guldur with Glamdring against Thrain.

How that could be?

My opinion is:
1. Thorin has the key and the map, before he meet Gandalf. Thrain was captured without key and map.
2. Gandalf goes only with his staff to the nazgul-tombs.
3. Gandalf finds Glamdring after that at the troll-cave.
4. Gandalf meets Thrain in Dol Guldur after he leaves Bilbo and the Dwarves. They fight.
5. Maybe after that there will be a battle-scene with the nazguls.

It would be very different from the book, but this could be the answers for the film-riddles about Glamdring.

You weren't really asking me, but...

... in the last one I would like to see just a smidgin of a glimpse of Thranduil. We know nothing about him beyond the name of the actor, but he must be in film one if the barrels are. And I'm so curious about him - yet also slightly torn because I don't want to see everything beforehand.

But Thranduil, Beorn, Bard.....

On the other hand, though, I'm more than glad of whatever comes. I've really enjoyed all the production videos - just so much fun.

Is he the same fellow that you on the ToRN panel at San Diego Comic Con a couple years ago? The one who worked on the material for the appendices in the LOTR movies?

If so I'm glad as he seemed like a really nice guy. I remember at that time it was up in the air as to whether he would be involved in the Hobbit movies.

How I say Smaug

I have always said Smaug like "Smog" like the name for the smoke/fog pollution mixture. It just always seemed to make sense to me, since Smaug pollutes the air in a way with his smoke and fire and everything.

Looks like it could be a Warg - possibly the chieftain? The build doesn't look much like a pony to me.

Also, a few people think they saw Sylvester McCoy in this blog. Anyone mind pointing out where they think they saw him?

Dain's red axe

I'm thinking that the red warhammer we see Richard Taylor playing around with is actually a version of Dain's famous red weapon. Perhaps they decided he would look better with a hammer? It IS painted red, after all. Just a thought. Smile

Alan Lee as a man of Laketown? Probably same with John Howe.

Jackson already seen in a previous vlog. Probably man of Laketown as well, or someone the company pass on their journey. Maybe outside Bree as has been suggested before?

What other cameos do you think we'll get :) ?

Yeah, that's probably

the WB PR department. They don't seem to like giving things away in advance of their promotion schedule.

Silverlode

"Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention.

That would be an Air-bison. Yip, yip!

Beater and Biter spotted together at Troll's Cave!!

Many have commented that Glamdring might already be with Gandalf before Troll-Shaw based on shots of Gandalf wandering Dol Guldur with the blade in hand. But at 7:56 of the vlog we see both Glamdring and Orcist being carried behind 2nd 2nd Assistant Director Bruno Du Bois (translated Bruno of the Forest, cool eh?) onto the set of the trolls treasure cave together while Gandalf and Thorin walk by without the legendary blades! It's not conclusive but it's certainly promising. Hopefully the frame by frame analysis later will give us some further speculation.

Yes, he was on a Comic-Con panel with us. He was, as I call him, the architect of the LOTR DVDs and hopefully someday the guy who produced the ULTIMATE LOTR Blu-Rays with all new extras.

He is definitely a friend to TheOneRing (and KongIsKing) and is mindful and respectful of fans and Tolkien and Peter.

In my opinion, having any other person do the home entertainment package for these films would be a big mistake. Warners saw the wisdom and hired the guy and I dare say we will be more pleased later when we see all there is to see. In the meantime, he hands us these excellent Vlogs.

I never understood

the whole "Red Axe" excitement. I thought the term just referred to the fact that his axe would be covered in blood. There are other references for example in LOTR of red swords. It is similar to people getting all confused over Legolas' white knife which simply refers to the fact the steel blade of the knife was polished bright.

Awesome vlog, most revealing so far.

Still extremely disappointed about the barrels

the dwarfs should be sealed up in the barrels in the river, no if and or buts about it... What purpose does it serve having them out floating half out of the barrels? It's not even close to the book. the book they got to the end they were covered in hay or whatever Bilbo could pack them in with, and some remarked on never be able to eat whatever the smell was that was in the barrel again (i think it was apples) plus it showed Bilbo's resourcefulness... It's way off base Frown, some of the other stuff looked pretty coolWink but the barrels scene is not even close to the book from what I could see in the Vlog

"X" amount of time watching sealed barrels floating down stream would be boring on film. Perhaps they will be sealed in for the escape and pop out later. I'm already over it.

Just because you are incable of imagining why the filmmakers might be doing this doesn’t mean they are similarly blinded.

In fact, much to the contrary. Fortunately!

Which is why they’re filmmakers. You cannot film a book. I encourage you to try to sometime. It might save us all from the worst of your rants.

Or not. Hope springs eternal.

You need to step back and settle down. Stop screaming about every possible thing that might not be as it is in The Book. Start thinking very carefully and very deliberately about what possible reasons the filmmakers may have had for making the various decisions they’ve made, and which you go ranting and railing about. Think of yourself in their shoes for a change.

You never do that. You need to. What you do is exhausting to behold, and more than a little queasifying. For everyone’s sake, please give it a rest. You're just making yourself unhappy with all this bile. And other people, too.

…all eyes looked upon the ring; for he held it now aloft, and the green jewels gleamed there that the Noldor had devised in Valinor. For this ring was like to twin serpents, whose eyes were emeralds, and their heads met beneath a crown of golden flowers, that the one upheld and the other devoured; that was the badge of Finarfin and his house.
The Silmarillion, pp 150-151

what purpose does having the dwarfs bobbing around making jokes and being seen do Nothing what so ever and I wasn't ranting I had a valid point its nothing like the book at all other than its in a river... thank god i'm not a film maker, cause guess what people would be getting Tolkien and not some half witted attempt at it to appease the mass market hearing every bit of

and if I were in their shoes I would have the dwarfs in the barrels floating down the river being put there by Bilbo himself grumbling every little grumble that they had to offer while floating down the river, then being pulled out of the river by the men of Laketown like they are supposed to be

thing is that scene

is not about the dwarfs reactions, do we need to see every dwarf in every scene? NO we don't in the book we didn't know whether the dwarfs were alive or dead, drown, or what. The scene is about Bilbo rescuing the dwarfs and being unsure if he made the right decision. Not oooh lets go rafting down the river because it will be exciting. Thats part of the scene the not knowing what is happening to the dwarfs, wondering if they are all going to come out alive not seeing their expressions. Bilbo himself wondered that while they were floating down the river thinking he had possibly drown some of them. Thats what that scene is about

That was my inital reaction too

but then I thought..hello, they could have internal barell shots, conveying the confinement and discomfort of the dwarves. It would be dark and claustrophobic and more physically viable and realistic than dwarves bobbing up and down in open barrels which in all likelyhood would tip over almost immediatley in such a situation. Please do something that is the same as the books Sir Peter.

sinister71 keep "ranting" as it has been put. There are others that agree with you. As you say the scene is another one about Bilbo and his continued growth and resourcefulness and we are not meant to know the dwarves status until they are de-barelled (un-barelled??? barrellless???? barrel liberated???? what is the best way to describe it??)

Sinister71: im sorry to say this but comrade Finrod said as it is.
Every time we see every little difference from thebooks, the hair, the barrels open, a tree down, a bit of body comedy, dialogue or whatever, you and others immediately go into a rant about what a disappontment it is, how horrible it is, and you havent even seen it on screen, with a context, which is what qualifies someone to criticize a moment or a character...it really sounds like a broken record...
and dont think please, im one too...i think dwalins hair and costume is a bit strange for me..somehow i dont like that hair..i hope i will...

Finrod says you should place yourself on their shoes...and thats spot on.

To create a movie adaptation, it involves fulfilling certain parameters, goals, like exciting moments, a good pace, giving more fighting to spice the danger up, to show how dangerous something is by incresing its visual impact, or being more direct rather than book subtle...

All this because you have to convey the excitement, the beauty, the danger, the profiles in 2 or 3 hours mos, t to a film audience...that is dramatically different than reading a book...i havent given much thought to this particular scene...but i suppose having 13 closed barrels just float down the river...not that exciting...by , after the closed barrels moments....having them break them and face the danger of some rapids seems very logical from a filmmaking point of view...

"What purpose does it serve having them out floating half out of the barrels? "....hammm..they can talk or shout at each other? could be usefull...i dont know, i havent read the script...but i also think the screenwriters are not stupid, if they decided this they have a reason...and surely not giving in to the mass market...probably to do with pace, and a necessary sense of escape through danger into even more danger....

unnecessary? ..how do you know that? for whom or what is it unnecessary?
this is not about watching the story unfold from the view point of the reader...but the cinema goer...13 grumpy dwarves in the dark saying curses to this or that might very well be not that entertaining...they could have done it just like that and realised the scene needed some danger...

And concerning the not knowing what happ to the dwarves..they will do that surely...there will be a moment when they are sealed and bilbo doesnt know...they might shoot inside the barrels...then them going ahhh breakkk em POF!...then they can kick the tops off...

Its the whole point of not knowing they are ok that is the purpose of that scene, its the thinking of Bilbo 'Oh my god I've drown some of the dwarfs" its the finding out when they get to their destination Oh my god they are alright, maybe a bit beaten up... but alright. Not yelling at each other or joking or having a good time in the river. I seen no peril in the faces of the dwarfs as we saw them. If there were something in common with the book I wouldn't complain but its nothing like the book. I'm sorry I call a spade a spade but its true. So far I see nothing in common with the books version of the barrels out of bond section is that an adaptation to completely change the feeling of the sequence from the book. I thought they wanted to have the same tone, dwarfs talking and yelling at each other doesn't have the same tone as not knowing what has become of the dwarfs... besides that section is more about Bilbo than the dwarfs, how did it become about them from being about Bilbo? its about Bilbo wondering did he do the right thing, should he have left them in Thranduil's dungeon, should he have thought of a different plan, all about Bilbo not the dwarfs. I still think they should be stuck in the barrels so we wonder what will become of them if they have drown just like Bilbo does (at least in the book)

Filming 13 barrels floating down a river well not so exciting but it doesn't need to be 15 minute long either, but I feel as I'm sure others do they should have just stayed at least in the same area code as the material from the book not necessarily the same street or block but at least the same area code which they havent, but your right I don't know what they are thinking I don't think they do either from seeing that scene.

whats the point?

well film is a visual medium...so if PJ decides he want the barrel seen to be more fun in the rapids it would be a whole lot more fun to see the dwarves pounded around in the water rather then 12 closed barrels with only one character in view the whole time

i hate to break it to you buddy

but your attitude toward it clearly shows you have no idea what it takes to adapt a book to film... When you start writing the script you have to make so many decisions for the medium you are working in..

I think people need to remember that the books and the movies are art. And for a fun exercise you should adapt The Hobbit book into a 12x 24inch painting. Think that through....changing (or adapting) one piece of art into a different form. I think you would find that you would not be such a slave to the original. You would make changes and cuts that work with that medium.

I am not saying that every change Pj has ever made has been for the better but also i cant stress enough that a BOOK can not be a Movie... they are two different mediums with different rules different audiences and different ways of telling the story. also not to mention that Pj is an artist and its his project...like it or leave it.

If you made the movie it would never see the light of day...And thank God because it would be a pile of mess. This is Peter Jacksons The Hobbit from the director that brought you The Lord of The Ring movies....it is his work BASED ON Tolkien's books. They are not Tolkiens movies.... And i think you would be surprised that had Tolkien ever been apart of a movie ADAPTATION there would be changes that would still get your panties in a knot.

I for one am getting tired of this forum. I love Tolkien. I love PJ's films. Thats why I come here... To find out whats new, to discuss the ins and outs of the films. It is beyond me why people who seem to hate these films and what Pj has done come here and bash. Are you untitled to your opinion? Sure. But as much as I dont like George Lucas or Micheal Bay I would never seek out starwars and transformers forum to tell the people that love those films how terrible they are.

Some observations...

1:09 James Nesbitt's "script" left hand side has Bilbo's and Gandalf's lines recreating a scene from The Shining!
1:55 Bilbo and Bofur looking very spooked and very wet, could be in the cave where they shelter on the mountain pass
3:40 Elven soldier kneeling
4:00 Looks like a warg rider
4:51 Climbing the narrow path to the secret door on Lonely Mountain (narrow ledge) or on the mountain pass?
5:43 Gandalf's "Dawn will take you" scene
5:52 Thorin shown in "out of the frying pan into the fire" scene
6:11 Pulp Fiction in the background on the wall
6:55 Radagast's sled?
6:56 Alan Lee getting ready for another cameo
6:57 John Howe in a massive chair, could be Beorn's
7:21 Looks like a model of Dale, based on previous spy photographs
7:24 Looks like a model of the White Council "chamber" in Rivendell? where Galadriel, Gandalf, Elrond and Saruman meet (see vlog 3 for reference)
7:58 Glamdring and Orcrist being taken to the trollshaw cave set?
9:40 Ear picking, wax flicking hobbit from FotR EE
10:48 Gloin has the same set of axes as Gimli
11:40 HUGE hammer, very much looks dwarvish in design, possibly belongs to Dain?
11:52 Richard Taylor on a warg?
12:18 McKellen getting makeup and Gandalf's hat on the ground
12:20 One of the ponies been cooked by the Orcs?

well,

It's a lot better than what Hollywood cast & crews do behind the scenes...

Davy Jones could've been Bilbo...I mean he was a Brit with a sense for adventure, singing & dancing. And think of the costs it would've save with forced perspective: he was ACTUALLY 5'3. He also hung out with a grumpy tall dude in a hat (Mike Nesmith.) While we're at it let's just make Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork Merry & Pippin.

we don't need to see every dwarf in every scene, but...

...it may be in their contracts to have their faces shown. You forget that some decisions come from the studios and contracts and not just PJ's "lack of artistry" as you might call it.

Work a day in the biz and you'll have a whole new perspective on why things are the way they are in the film. And i'm willing to bet you'd marvel at how much PJ actually accomplished despite the limitations doled out by the studio and other unseen restraints.

Davy Jones could've been Bilbo...I mean he was a Brit with a sense for adventure, singing & dancing. And think of the costs it would've save with forced perspective: he was ACTUALLY 5'3. I really hope not.

I would just really hate those dominal changes. Among other things, having the key and map and producing them at the last minute is how Gandalf saved the expidition. Thorin was so didainful of Bilbo that he was on the verge of taking offense and walking out on the whole affair, until Gandalf produced the map and key, and the story of how he got them.

In Reply To
"
My opinion is:
1. Thorin has the key and the map, before he meet Gandalf. Thrain was captured without key and map.
2. Gandalf goes only with his staff to the nazgul-tombs.
3. Gandalf finds Glamdring after that at the troll-cave.
4. Gandalf meets Thrain in Dol Guldur after he leaves Bilbo and the Dwarves. They fight.
5. Maybe after that there will be a battle-scene with the nazguls.

It would be very different from the book, but this could be the answers for the film-riddles about Glamdring.

my thoughts as well

I don't think just because we see bits with them floating around half sticking out of the barrels means that's the only barrel time. That may be towards the end of that ride. There may be a bit at the beginning of that escape where they are sealed in. Otherwise they would not be fooling the elves into thinking they are just barrels of wine floating along as usual.

I think the EEs bring a lot to the film

Take for instance:

The gift giving in Lothlorien
Eowyn's eulogy
Faramir and Pippin scene

3 very different scenes, which I can't imagine being missed out now. They're not the only examples as well.

I never said that

Everyone seems to want to say PJ is getting the tone of the films right but clearly this scene is nothing like the tone of the book. Don't presume to know whether I will enjoy the films or not. I may I may not but I will pass that judgment when I see the entire film. I was referring to the barrel scene only because it has none of the tone of the book that I can see. I guess its too dificult for anyone to understand since most people I guess think this level of change is acceptable as long as the films get made. which is truly sad. Again the scene is supposed to be about Bilbo not the dwarfs maybe people should go back and read it so they can see how it really is supposed to be... I'll pass judgment on the film as a whole when I see it but this scene looks like an epic fail when compared to the source material.

Exactly!

Plus, the vlogs are all about exciting content for the fans to freeze-frame and "oooh" over; as much I like the barrel scene, they don't need to get the actors in costume and prosthetics in order to film closed barrels, so that's probably why, if there's sealed barrels in this sequence, we haven't seen them yet.

Matter of Perspective

The books are almost entirely told from Bilbo's POV... we get very little of the dwarves' viewpoint except where it is readily apparent to Bilbo. OTOH, I don't think you can do this as easily with a movie -- nor do I think you want to. We will be watching and empathizing with all the main characters, is my guess, not just Bilbo. If the dwarves are in barrels, you only get Bilbo's half of the story, wondering whether the dwarves drowned or not. But as the audience, we don't just want to wonder whether the dwarves survived -- we actually know that already. We want to know what it was like to go down a stream in a barrel. A movie puts you in the action in a way a book does not. (books have other great advantages, of course, such as more introspection into a character's thoughts!)

As such, I expect the scene would go like such: Bilbo packs dwarves in sealed barrels. Elves toss barrels into river. Bilbo follows along for a while, and starts worrying whether the dwarves will drown, especially as river gets more turbulent. He helps unseal/dwarves unseal themselves at some point. We get to go on a tumbly ride down the river. They wash up on some shore at some point.

I do think the tone is different, of course -- Bilbo's emotional state in the scene is very different than that of the dwarves. But it is not a loss -- the tone is different because as a movie audience we want to see the story from the perspective of the dwarves as well, not just Bilbo. It is more of a "see, don't tell" experience. There is some suspense to the limited perspective offered in the books, but given well all know how the story ends, this perspective gives us more empathy for the dwarves.

Where is Balin?

Or rather the actor playing Balin? He has rarely been seen in the VBs, and I've never seen him interviewed or anything about his role, like many of his cast members.

Agreed.

The EEs are by no means perfect, but then neither are the theatricals. What small issues I have with the films are not enough to ruin my enjoyment of them.

the FAQ entry was changed to make it less frustrating for those uploading attachments. I would be one of those frustrated people. ;) I still go up to 50kb for pics not hosted here at TORn.

Ken Stott

We've speculated before that the reason Stott (Balin) hasn't been interviewed/seen that much is because he is one of the major Dwarves in the film (not really seen RA or MF either).

Either that or he's shy Wink

I'll only submit IF

you REDO that scene so it matches the book. IMO that scene was one of the things that Tolkien wrote cinematically. It would've worked well on screen as written in the books.

I was gripping my seat thinking "Here it comes! Here it comes! Wait! Those are CAVE TROLLS busting the wall down!
Crazy

I was awaiting the dread of the Gandalf/Wiki High noon showdown all trilogy long. Alas...Unimpressed

Not every single one

But the majority of them. You could nit-pick and say whatever percent you want. But those of us that have been around or *shudder* worked in Hollywood we can def. say there is something to be had about the diff. in attitudes between the two filmmaking entities.

And a filmcrew should be commended on their good spirits and hard work ethics and I have no shame in saying most of Hollywood could learn a lesson. Not that Wellywood doesn't have its issues. I'm sure they do, but there's a reason why every Hollywood behind the scenes feature looks and sounds the same throughout all its many shows.

I don't retract my statement. Learn a lesson Hollywood.

Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. Just to add

Yes it does do good to pit one group against the other if you want one to change and be more like the other. It might not be such a chore to the underlings of Hollywood if the overlords were less self-indulged, arrogant, and disrespectful. The task of making a film is hard enough without unnecessary high school drama antics. The mood on set would be more tolerable and more of the money would go to what you actually see on screen rather than to certain people.
Sorry...I'm kind of ranting. I'll stop now. But it is worth noting that having us fans catching good vibes toward a project, like these TH vlogs, is also good for revenue. It's win-win.
Also kudos to PJ for attempting to cast people that can actually get along well for such long periods of time. That also translate to what we all see on screen. no enough directors recognize this.
Just a lesson to learn.

Davy Jones could've been Bilbo...I mean he was a Brit with a sense for adventure, singing & dancing. And think of the costs it would've save with forced perspective: he was ACTUALLY 5'3. A happy, fun-loving crew is great

But Hollywood would only learn a lesson if the final product, the films, turn out to be good! The question is: does this kind of an atmosphere necessarily result in a high-quality film?

I would say not necessarily, but possible. Though this is IMO, I thought King Kong and Lovely Bones were quite bad, and wasn't overly impressed with LOTR (though they were most certainly very successful). So at least for me, a happy cast and crew did not translate into a good film.

After all, one of the most hellish film productions ever - Apocalypse Now - produced a masterpiece. The set of Lawrence of Arabia was not the funnest place to work, but out came an epic film like few others.

In short, I don't care too much about what the behind the scenes experience is (unless it is abusive or exploitative.) As long as the meat grinder produces high-quality hamburger, I'm happy.

What does everyone else think? Where we see Orky and Glamie, does Glamdring seem to be aged/dirty in the same manor as Orcrist does? It's hard for me to tell, but it kinda' looks like it to me, so maybe they will both be found in the troll cave as in the book. In Reply To
We've speculated before that the reason Stott (Balin) hasn't been interviewed/seen that much is because he is one of the major Dwarves in the film (not really seen RA or MF either).

Either that or he's shy Wink

Hm, why might being one of the major dwarves in the film make someone less apt to be interviewed/seen?

But yeah, there isn't a lot on Richard Armitage or Martin Freeman, either. More on Freeman than Armitage.

While I don't agree with Sinister's opinion there's really no need for anyone to start attacking Sinister for having a different opinion. This isn't imdb. This should be a place where everyone can voice their opinion without someone jumping at them.

Agreed

Particularly about Avengers. How did that film get 93% fresh on rottentoatoes?

And no, I don't believe a hellish environment necessarily leads to a good film. It takes rare genius to pull that off.

However, I don't agree that happy people necessarily produce good movies. People apparently had a fantastic time on the set of Dungeons and Dragons...

If anything, I think PJ should run a tighter, more coherent ship, and not let actor suggestions influence the narrative as much as seems to have been he case in LOTR.

Here's to hoping PJ surprises me.

As someone who's also worked on Hollywood sets before...

I totally agree with everything you just said. I'm sure the film industry down in Wellington isn't perfect, but the attitudes that PJ's crews have is great. I would argue, though, that this has as much to do with the can-do, do-anything culture in NZ as it does the fact that they are working on a really great project.

Andrew Lesnie said in the commentary of Fellowship of the Ring that he feels that filmmakers are nomads who go from shoot to shoot/production to production seeking good pay and good working environments. Crews don't get that a lot in Hollywood, where the projects are increasingly becoming product-based and everything is about the bottom line (i.e. every, single, movie Hasbro has put out since 2007).

Say what you will about LOTR, but it's a film series made with passion and heart by filmmakers who are more concerned with giving the audience a good, entertaining film than pushing some toy line or soft drink down our throats.

Actor collaboration not all bad...

... after all it was Liv being uncomfortable with the warrior princess idea that helped change PJ's mind about that.

I always hope that a movie team had a good time working to make a movie, just as I hope everyone gets a job they love. Not really sure how a happy movie crew could hurt the making of a movie. Good morale is important for any team, in my humble opinion.

The Avengers got a 93% because it did its job, it entertained the vast majority of the people who saw it. 'nuff said there. Wink

I just am so grateful for these vlogs...

...that I can't possibly have any negative feelings towards them!

I mean, the fact that the crew is so collaborative, happy, humorous, and friendly just like they were while filming LotR makes me the happiest person on earth!

How many films can boast a director like Peter Jackson? Whatever your feelings are towards his style and the choices he makes, you have to admit how much he cares about the films, how much he cares about us (the fans) and how much he cares about his cast and crew. What a humble, kind, and personable man - still after all these years and all of his successes, he is still willing to do something like this for us.

I will never lose sight of how incredibly lucky we are to have The Hobbit in this group of people's hands and everything they do for us. I couldn't have created a better scenario even if I wanted to!

And I agree with you Alientraveller - I have had this account for several years but NEVER post (always lurk) because sometimes there is too much negativity for my liking (but there are also loads of kind, wonderful people here too).

But I simply cannot contain how amazingly grateful I am to have these movies being created by such a wonderful, incredible group of individuals that would pretty much do anything for us! These vlogs are always the absolute highlight of my day and I always love every single second of them!

Alright, off to go figure out a way to go to the premiere this November with TORn!Wink

but how much change is too much change?

its the attitude to accept the films being made, no matter how many changes get made that bothers me ( And I totally mean nothing personal and mean no offense) An adaptation of a film should at least resemble the book for the majority of it, as far as plot, tone, character development, and such. But when you start changing aspects of the book because you feel they don't have enough action or drama, such as dwarfs hanging out of barrels and yelling at each other while going down the rapids, or trollshaws becoming an action sequence (granted the dwarfs could have came in 2 separate groups the first one getting snatched up in sacks without resistance and the second being more cautious and fighting back)... The book had something to it that flowed well and would have made a great film with minor tweaks without making major changes. Adding the DolGuldur subplot is fine (depending on how well and close to Tolkien's style it is written and if the underplay the ring and the Necromancer as Sauron) and would have been enough to bring the film into the same realm as the LOTR. I'm even cool with a Legolas cameo or minor role, but to make him a major player is another flaw already IMO.

But it is the people who are willing to just accept anything the director wants put into the films, or change things cannon to the books such as character development, and plot course to make it more action packed, or dramatic than it was in the book. The hobbit book had all the elements already in place to be a complete success without any major changes being made...

I'm curious as to why opinions held by someone else bother you so much? Clearly, many people are ecstatic with what they've seen so far. To many, what they've seen *does* resemble the book and they aren't bothered at all by rapids, trollshaws, etc. It doesn't diminish their love for Tolkien or their appreciation of the books. It doesn't mean that they don't realize some things are deviations from Tolkien, it just plain doesn't bother them.

I can certainly see being bothered by some of the changes PJ is making - again, it's opinion but, being bothered that someone else doesn't feel the same way seems like an exercise in futility. Live and let live.

it not that its their opinion

they are certainly entitled to that... its just the general attitude of any changes which will certainly have a chain effect that are made are ok. If more people who enjoy the source material would say or send a meesage to filmmakers who alter books to the point of changing the context and feel of certain chapters or in worst case scenarios the feel of the film as a whole that maybe they should take another look at the source material, maybe we would end up with a more faithful adaptation of great literary works.

Changing the events of the barrel ride changes the way they arrive at Laketown, makes the riddles that Bilbo gives to Smaug make less sense like barrel rider, (Well I guess if you want to get technical I rides IN a barrel), I am he that buries his friends alive and drowns them and draws them alive again from the water... So now with open barrels we get, "I am he who rides the Raging Rapids Barrel ride with his friends, has a photo taken, and gets a t-shirt at Six Flaggs"?Crazy... I'm just a firm believer in not making any changes that aren't needed or wont cause further changes down the road which the barrel sequence as PJ has it even from what we have seen so far does that (causes changes further down the road)... I can see enhancing the way it was explained in the book (rapids) but not changing it to open barrels

Besides how would barrels float strictly upright, down a river, with rapids, having the lids on, with the dwarfs able to open them without them filling with water and sinking to the bottom of the river? we will have to wait and see I guess. I just think they need to be careful of changes that cause more changes further in the films

But of course everyone is entitled to their opinion but they should look at the facts of the story compared to the facts of whats being filmed completely different

I think it's safe to say that everyone here *is* looking at the facts (at least the ones we know about so far - out of the context of the finished film), otherwise they wouldn't be here discussing them. They just plain don't bother some people. But, it shouldn't bother you that it doesn't bother them. Laugh All that really matters in the end is your own opinion and attitude. The fact that someone else is excited and enthusiastic about the films shouldn't affect you one way or the other, nor should your attitude affect them. They're just different and probably always will be.

your right

but I guess I can't understand why people wouldn't want a faithful adaptation instead of one filled with unnecessary changes such as what we have seen from the Barrel scene...All i personally can think of is a Six Flags ride while watching the dwarfs in the barrels from the Vlog... I admit, I probably will never agree with someone who feels that unneeded changes are alright to be made. When the original material, if done right, would make for a very tense drama filled scene true to the context and tone of the original source material. It's also something that would not cause needing change to scenes later in the story that will surely be effected by previous changes either that or they won't worry about any continuity between scenes in the actual films themselves. Either way if you change one thing it causes ripples with later events directly connected to the original event that was changed. But if people think thats ok then thats their right... Wink

If it makes you feel any better

I'm annoyed to no end about adding romance and female characters in the film.
No disrespect to the ladies (they are my favorite of the two sexes) but this demographic pandering is nonsense. There aren't any Asians, Blacks, gays or Latins in the story and I don't see the film catering to them.
And you know what? They shouldn't have to because it just happens to be a story void of women and romance & ethnic people.
I'm certainly not for habitually keeping certain demographics out of film but not everyone needs to be in every film all the time.
This is a classic story and I'm willing to bet women would come and enjoy TH and not even give it a second thought if they hadn't added these unnecessary changes. Adding females and romance to a story where there is none is an insult, I would say, to females.
I mean, what about me?!? Did they add Viggo to please me?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Tongue
Just the same I'm still going into to this giving the filmmaking team the benefit of the doubt because I think they've earned it at this point.

Davy Jones could've been Bilbo...I mean he was a Brit with a sense for adventure, singing & dancing. And think of the costs it would've save with forced perspective: he was ACTUALLY 5'3. He also hung out with a grumpy tall dude in a hat (Mike Nesmith.) While we're at it let's just have Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork as Merry & Pippin.

How much change is too little change?

The answer for me is of course, I have no idea. But neither I suspect do you or anyone else here, what ever they may think.

There is much talk of "necessary" and "unnecessary" changes - which are unhelpful terms for me anyway - but let me also ask the question: necessary for what? One answer might be :in order to deliver films which achieve popular, critical and awards success (e.g to the same level as the LOTR trilogy). I would be surprised of they were not three key metrics by which film makers think about their product.

I am always a little surprised by the confidence with which people talk about what is needed to deliver such successes. Certainly we cannot leap directly from the ingredients to an assumption of a successful dinner. We have seen other films cooked up with the same Tolkien stock which failed to achieve any comparable impact. So the recipe must be important.

As to which elements of the recipe are necessary, we can possibly judge that in relation to ourselves and our own taste. But this is a meal for millions of people, seeking to appeal to the differing tastes of as many as possible. Of course it is fun to speculate but how can we speak with such confidence from the sidelines as to what it was exactly that made the meal work for so many different people across the globe and what it will take this time to do the same? How can we say, with any degree of certainty, that more or less success would have ensued if x or y were instead a or b.

It brings to mind a TV show (called something like "Secrets of the Ancients") where a number of "experts" were called upon to raise an obelisk, build a trebuchet or complete some other feat using tools and techniques which would have been available at the time. The experts had read much on the topic and were genuinely very knowledgeable but despite that, tended to fail fairly resoundingly each episode. They had never had to actually do it, and in trying to, recognised large swathes of unconscious incompetence.

I agree to an extent

We haven't really seen anything about the romance interest yet anyways I also agree about Tauriel and the romance thing with Kili, but on that I am holding out hope that the issue is one big joke to stir up stuff on the net, and Tauriel's role will be one that will be relatively minor in the grand scheme of things..

But we have seen footage of how they are handling the Barrel sequence

ok fair enough

but give me a reason why its better to have the dwarfs bobbing along like some ride at Six Flags, which takes the meaning of the chapter off the book out of context ( Bilbo is fearful that he drown some of the dwarfs and worried he made the wrong decision ) i see no reason why sealed barrels in a river (with Rapids) with Bilbo clinging on for dear life maybe falling off trying to steer or coax the barrels in the right direction, trying to get back on top of them. All elements that are true to the book and would make the situation exciting and intriguing without causing ripples in later scenes, like how they arrive in Laketown, or referring to himself as barrel rider to Smaug. A barrel in water floats on its long side not upright its just the way they float, unless they are tied together which we can obviously see in the Vlog they are not. so how can they be sealed in and then pop the tops off? Which if not changes the escape from Thranduil's dungeons as well, It may be some nonsense about how much screen time the actors get. Peter Jackson being a screenwriter as well as director, He is going to try and make "improvements"Crazy anyplace he thinks he can get away with it. which is not always the best thing for adapting a book to film, when the source material is already rich with excitement and detail that only needs minor tweaks.

I am not saying it will be better or worse, that is a matter of opinion Wink What I am saying however is that it is needlessly straying from the source material, when the source material could be just as exciting and/or more suspenseful than anything they have cooked up.

Reasons

Open barrels wouldn't be my first choice either. However, it does allow for more character interaction (BIlbo can still express his reservations to himself in an open barrel). But, perhaps more importantly, it follows one of the number one rules of film-making: to avoid covering actors' faces. Yes, we could still see their faces inside the barrels, but cutting between 13 actor's faces in barrels, multlple times, would be cumbersome. You may not agree with those reasons, but I could see them as plausible reasons a director might make those changes.

(And, here I thought you were going to get through one post without saying 'true to the book', 'needless changes' and bashing PJ Wink)

I wasn't bashing

I was just stating as screenwriter he obviously has a conflict of interest with keeping things the original way Tolkien wrote them... I wasn't bashingWink I know if I were a screenwriter I would have rather done an original story as apposed to having to use someone elses written story. But if I had to do someone elses story I would at least do it as closely as possible to the authors original context and meaning, not find the possible avenues to rewrite the story.Smile

How can Bilbo be uncertain of the dwarfs fate, or question his choice when he can plainly see they are alright? Covering the actors lets the viewer wonder about the character, and have a vested emotion in their status, fear of the unknown thats part of emotion for a scene like this...it was the not knowing that makes it dramatic and tense

as far as saying "true to the book" or "needless changes" are we saying that that scene is needed to be changed? if it is, I would like to know (seriously) why it was needed to be changed and why does it fit the story better and not just give the actors face time on screen...

I'm being serious and not smart, when people respond all they ever seem to want to say is "thats the way the writers want it" or "PJ thinks its better" as apposed to giving a valid reason why its better to show the dwarfs. Like I said if done right the scene could be dramatic, action packed, dangerous, with the element of the unknown all while having dwarfs inside the barrels with lids on. I'm trying to figure out how its better to have what looks like an amusement park ride as apposed to something unknown and dangerous with the possibility of dwarfs drowning.

Well, hutch, there's a good reason for including Galadriel at least...

Lady Galadriel is one of the most prominent members of the White Council, which plays a crucial role in Gandalf's side-story. She literally founded the esteemed body when she invited the Istari to join the Councils of the Wise.

I also don't see the addition of other female characters to be catering to the women and girls in the audience. Film is not prose; telling a story in film has different requirements. Characters must be shown interacting with their environments, including the people (male and female) that populate those environments. Tauriel is an example of that, even if she also seems to replace the (male) chief guard from the book. Granted her role is an expanded one, giving her a part in the capture of the Dwarves and apparently in the Battle of the Five Armies.

"Good and ill have not changed since yesteryear; nor are they one thing among Elves and Dwarves and another among Men. It is a man's part to discern them, as much in the Golden Wood as in his own house." - Aragorn

I was asking if anyone could think of a better reason

why it should be changed, example... the text of the book is not dramatic enough, Tolkien left this area of the book too grey and open to interpretation, It can't be made the way it was written and people will get up and walk out of the film if they make it that way... those would be actual reasons not assumptions of why PJ changed the barrel scene. because thats the way PJ wants it to me is not a valid reason its just like me saying IMO it is the screenwriters ego, thinking he can do it better than the author did, by drastically altering that scene and not worrying about what it changes later in the story.

well we can definitely agree to disagree on that one

more successful I highly doubt that. Different from the book yeah I'll agree with that.... I think alot of fans of the book who haven't been following the progression like the people who frequent these sites have been... are going to see the Six Flags amusement park ride on the screen and go WTF??? It has nothing in common with the book and frankly in alot of peoples minds (not just mine or people here or other forums) it doesn't come close to the cinematic action and suspense that could have been portrayed on film... My personal opinion though, I expected to see the Hobbit on screen done with some intergrity, not some WB influenced action lets make a theme park ride out of it sort of adventure

can get his souvenir photo at the kiosk at the docks of Laketown only 5 gold pieces or even better can even get a T-shirt from the souvenir stand in Laketown for 20 that says, "I survived the Barrel ride to Laketown and heres the T-shirt to prove it"Crazy But I guess the good thing is he can see that all the dwarfs are ok, and not worry about them being drown and when they get to there they should be perfectly safe as long as they kept their hands and feet inside the barrel that is Wink

Well that defies logic

Logic dictates that WB and PJ want the audience to enjoy the film so much that they'll tell their friends about it and more tickets will be sold. Thus more people enjoy the movie, more money is made by the movie-makers, thus the movie is more successful. And your assessment (going to see the Six Flags amusement park ride on the screen and go WTF) is countered by the success of PJ's adaptation of LOTR. Modern audiences are familiar with the concept that adaptations are not the same as the books that they derive from.

The fine print - I don't like everything PJ did with LOTR, nor do I watch everything made by PJ nor do I have a shrine burning incense dedicated to PJ. Wink

I guess I don't see showing the dwarfs riding in open barrels

as better in any way shape or form, it is just different and nothing like the text of the book. Its something that is no more dramatic than the scene could have been staying closer to the description Tolkien gave us with the dwarfs inside the barrels, actually quite the opposite because we know the dwarfs fate through the whole barrel ride, theres no mystery or surprise in finding out they did not drown or killed and we can see that they are alright and Bilbo isn't actually riding ON the barrel, he is in one himself...So how can he claim he is the "barrel rider", or "drowns his friends and brings them back to life" to Smaug? I just don't buy the whole PJ knows what he is doing argument all the time, ex...the army of the dead always reminds me of the scrubbing bubbles from the toilet bowl commercial at Pellinor Fields in the way they end the fight in like 5 minutes and its over with. Sure some of the changes were entertaining in LOTR I admit that did I like them better than the books probably not but they were entertaining. I just see this change as unnecessary for a cheap thrill when the probably never tried to explore the avenue of the way the scene originally was.

I don't have one either, but I bet there has got to be some people out there with a burning shrine to PJCrazy Some good and some badSmile

I certainly agree with Galadriel

but i'm not budging on my opinion about adding romance, etc. I know how studios work ("We need the women demographic! Get a female who kicks butt into the script. Hurry! Hurry!").

But at the very least I will wait to see the end results. I may enjoy it. I just hate when I can see studio decisions invading art. Esp. obvious ones. Takes me out of the films.

And to be specific I have no qualms about the actress herself. Never seen her before.

I understand you, but if open barrels are the worst of the changes

we should consider ourselves very lucky and walk away singing a happy tune, and whistling in the spaces between the lyrics. I hope I am wrong in what I am about to say, but something tells me that somewhere between entombed wraiths and never before encountered characters, we will likely have more bothersome deviations to discuss ere the end.

You may not like it but...

It works! My wife is happy to sit through a movie she would normally not disire to watch if there is some form of romance!

Studios know that. So if they add a romance wether its forced or not it's the difference between alienating a curtain demographic or adding something (most likely with a short amount screen time) that reaches a wider audience.

i'm pretty sure

blacks, asians, latins, gays, androids, aliens, and rodeo clowns will all see TH even though their demographics won't be represented at all.

This issue just bothers me because it gives the studios so much latitude to force artists to cater the same way every time and it doesn't allow the audience to grow or change.
They don't expand.
If they don't see their demographic they just tune out instead of investigating in stories that may not necessarily involve them. They don't get exposed to different shades of grey or viewpoints.

I hate to say this

but if they are coming to the Hobbit because of romance maybe they need to go find the latest Jennifer Aniston movie or some other kind of chick flick to watch... Hate to say it but its true... But sadly I'm sure they will add it to appease the 43% of movie goers who are women Angelic and NO thats not a real statistic (but since 2010 women have bought more movie tickets than men in the 18 to 24 age demographic as well as the 50 to 59 and 60 plus age brackets) came from the MPAA website

I just think its sad to add romance in a film that there was none what so ever involved in to begin with unless you count Thorin's love for his gold as a romance I wouldn't mind that romanceWink

I hate to say this sinister...

but all you ever seem to do is make up assumptions and jump to conclusions that are in no reliable way based and therefore start ravaging.
Is it a safe bet that there will be romance in the Hobbit? I'm sorry if i have missed the news
You always seem to know so much about these two movies, i wonder where you get all that inside knowledge from.
The dwarves may be sealed at first so that Bilbo is able to have his character developing moment until the barrels crash against a rock and open up, or they push out the tops themselves or whatever... who knows
i also can't find where you took the expectations from, that the whole damn movie will be all about sauron and the ring, which you claimed some threads earlier

Excuse me but from now on i will ignore your posts and stop reading and replying to them because they've been costing me quite a nerve. Don't get me wrong, it's not your opinions that bother me, but your unbased ways of argumentation and that you subtly often put people as minors or less of a fan cause they have different opinions.(easy example: in the discussion about the barrels you recognize opinions differing from your own and then claim that people who just accept changes are PJ worshippers with shrines which pretty much implies that you think they are unable of critical thinking and reflexion, whih to me seems very harsh and rude)

fine with me

really doesn't bother me if you ignore me Shocked, just like ignoring the facts that have already been placed in front of us from the Vlogs or the magazine article mentioning romance (must have missed that one, here ya go ( http://newboards.theonering.net/forum/gforum/perl/gforum.cgi?post=455836;sb=post_time;so=DESC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread )

I never once called anyone PJ worshipers, Loyalists maybe but thats your right to like the movies and all the changes. I simply think they are out of hand just from what we have seen, nothing more the stuff on the Vlogs, the magazine articles, news from this and other Tolkien/ Hobbit websites and PJ's talent for choosing spectacle over sustenance every time he makes a change. Some people only want to read whats placed in front of them in Black and white instead of reading what is obvious between the lines in the shades of grey... and the ring well PJ needs to show everyone what it was in his trilogy. I still believe he will make the ring more dominant in the Hobbit films than it ever needs to be, they gotta have that tie in to his trilogy instead of telling the tale the way it was originally done... esp when there is money to be madeCrazy

and about change well that was in reference to changes that effect or alter other events in the story not just the scenes they are in.., not simple understandable changes, which would be something like simply speeding up the pace of the river with maybe a section of rapids but still keeping the dwarfs in the barrels and all of Bilbos character arc intact... No its the drastic change of having to have dwarf interaction, Bilbo knows what is going on with the dwarfs, the arrive at Laketown apparently differently since they are not inside the barrels... its a ripple effect one little change that is not so important causes changes in other parts of the story.

the shrines comment was in reply to Tim who actually made the first comment about shrines and its called s-a-r-c-a-s-m... SheeshCrazy I guess some people have never heard of that Wink

people don't like hearing negative things even when they could be true

PJ's version of the hobbit will be perfect with all rainbows and sunshine throughout the film I'm sure... just perfectionCrazy

To wish for TH to be perfect is wrong because your idea of perfection for these stories is different than any other fan...than pjs, than minde, than trip traps...

Well, even if it was like that, its seems to me to be a waste of ones time to be constantly on the trigger to the point that it becomes almost a habit..
And some people dont enjoy what they consider to be a broken record speech and get tired of it...

Im sorry to say but i also share some of triptrap's thoughts on this...sometimes i just skip over your posts because i already know what youre saying and the way youre saying it... You just seem to know so much about the hows and whys of these movies ...but thats premature to me..

Still, to widhold judgement after the TH comes out seems ot be the most coherent attitude...while maintaining a mild optimism or pessimism accordingly to your appreciation of pjs work...

Exactly they could be true..we just dont know...to hear negativity all the time, seems to me, to be more understandable after the "could" changes to IS true...

PS:i enjoy your new image

well when all I see are constant changes

its hard NOT to be negative for someone who loves the source material, which I never claimed to love more than anyone else by the way I guess people just interpret the book and its tone differently... I guess I am just more vocal about hating some of the changes more than most. the book followed a certain lovable pattern and flowed well because of the way it was written and the tone Tolkien set throughout. Changing the meaning and tone of a scene that effects other scenes later in the film should have been thought out a bit more instead of just making it an action packed scene with none of the tone of the original...

people wonder how can you say that for sure... well lets see in the book... Bilbo seals the dwarfs in barrels, waits for the elves to push them out of a trap door, forgets about himself, and in an act of desperation jumps through the trap door at the last second. the barrels float down the river, with Bilbo riding on top of a barrel struggling to stay on. The barrels are gathered by the raft elves who then guide them to Laketown where they are left and Bilbo lets out the dwarfs under cover of night, and the dwarfs walk into Laketown where Thorin announces his return, is taken to the master of Laketown where at this time the raft elves protest and tell the master of Laketown they are Thranduil's prisoners....

As far as what we have seen so far the barrels are open, the dwarfs are hanging out talking and yelling going down roaring rapids, Bilbo is in a barrel as well. people don't want to hear you can't open a barrel going down roaring rapids. there has been no sign of closed barrels, no sign of raft elves, if the dwarfs arrive in open barrels of Laketown does that not change Bilbo letting them out and his not knowing if they had drown or not? wouldn't someone notice open barrels with dwarfs in them floating up to Laketown?

I'm reserving judgment until I see the films of course but the changes can't be denied... well I guess it can by those willing to accept anything put in front of them, or those who are willing to be so optimistic they are blind to the changes or those who just don't care that the movies are so different from the book... all of which is everyones right.... I'm not pointing fingers at anyone just pointing out attitudes that have been expressed... So i apologize to all who think I am just being negative thats not my intent my intent is to point out changes that aren't necessary and point out changes to those who refuse to see the changes. I've come to terms with this is going to be a film "loosely based" on the Hobbit book and will never compare to the original

I wasn't into LotR until after the movies...

So when I get annoyed about a change in The Hobbit I think of how I may have reacted to hearing about things in LotR - like the Moria goblins can climb walls and ceilings, the whole staircase sequence, Radagast being replaced by a moth. They really need to be seen in context to understand how they work. I know you said you're reserving your judgement, I'm just sharing my thoughts.
