Instructions for ordering Map Prints - deadline October 12

Daniel Reeve has updated his web page to allow TORNadoes and TORNsibs the exclusive opportunity to order a high quality reproduction of the incredible Map that was presented to Altaira and BG on September 22.

From Daniel's web site:

"These reproductions are printed on heavy, high-quality, fine art paper, and will be individually numbered and signed by the artist, Daniel Reeve. This is a once-only Limited Edition, exclusive to TORnsibs - no more maps will be produced after the initial run. Each print will be numbered according to the final total of orders: eg. "1 of 90". The map measures 72cm x 51.5cm (28.5" x 20.25"), the same size as the original."

The prints will be limited to 100, and priority goes to those who contributed to the Map. We will be monitoring the orders to make sure that contributors and regular message board members have the first opportunity to order the prints, then the TORN community at large. If we don't recognize you from the ordering information, we may ask you to identify yourself with your board nick. Please don't be offended, but we want to make sure the contributors and message board community are able to place their orders.

PLEASE NOTE: The order deadline is October 12, and after that time NO more prints will be available. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Map prints will be shipped directly to you, so be sure to include your shipping address. Cost for the print is US$100 and shipping to the US and countries other than New Zealand is US$12. Payment is by cheque or through PayPal, which accepts bank transfers or credit cards. More ordering details can be found on the order page.

The link for ordering Prints is

http://www.danielreeve.co.nz/TORnMap/

Many of you are interested in purchasing a poster version of the Map. Daniel is pricing the cost of a poster and we will post instructions and pricing as soon as it's available.

Any questions, please contact me (Entmaiden) or Eledhwen. You can also send Daniel an e-mail at mail@danielreeve.co.nz. Feel free to send Daniel an e-mail and tell him he's the best. Ever.Smile

Each cloak was fastened about the neck with a brooch like a green leaf veined with silver.
`Are these magic cloaks?' asked Pippin, looking at them with wonder.
`I do not know what you mean by that,' answered the leader of the Elves.

Woohoo!!!!!

Just made my order! I'm so excited!

"Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them.
Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you." -On Fairy Stories

say...I just noticed the alphabetical order

that our nicks are listed on the sides of the map. I knew there was a reason I shortened my nick with the new boards..."other powers at work" and all that.

lol

What a great opportunity. Thanks for the heads up. I can't wait to see this framed above my couch.

I tried ordering from his site and eledhwen's information appeared.

Her total was there, and her name. So I'll send you a check instead. Thank you *sooo* much for all the hard work you have done and are continuing to do.

I've placed my order! Like all of us privileged to see the actual map in person, I cannot wait to have my own copy! It will have pride of place in my library/office at home where I can look up from the computer and rest my eyes on it any time I want.

BTW, a question about the check

Should it be made out to Daniel or some other way? I asked entmaiden this in an e-mail, but I thought other people might have the same question, and if the answer is to Daniel, it might be easier for her to post the answer here instead of replying to several e-mails.

I just ordered mine!

I would regret not getting this. And there are enough things (both large and small) that I regret, this is not going to be one of them. It's such a beautiful work of art. It's going to look wonderful hanging on my wall.

I didn't see anything about it, but is there an idea of when it'll ship and how long it might take? I'll wait happily for as long as needed, but I was just curious.

A bright fire was on the hearth, but the sun was warm, and the wind was in the South. Everything looked fresh, and the new green of Spring was shimmering in the fields and on the tips of the trees' fingers.

Sorry! I've been in meetings all day

and I'm sitting at the airport waiting for my plane to arrive so I can fly home.

Make the checks out to me, then I'll cash them and order for you through PayPal. I think this is the easiest solution because of the currency conversion. I'll order the prints for you and send Daniel instructions about shipping.

Now, I am waiting until I receive the checks before I place the order, but I won't wait until they clear. And if we are getting close to the deadline I'll make sure everyone gets their map.

Both Daniel, eledhwen and I can see the orders coming through so he can double-check my instructions about ordering and shipping.

Might be a couple weeks

but that's mostly because Daniel isn't shipping any until after October 12. He has to number the prints ("1 of xxx") and he won't know the total until the ordering closes. That's a Friday (Thursday for the Northern Hemisphere) so he'll probably ship soon after that. He's shipping each individually so arrival times will vary.

So exciting!

Thanks for the info!

I took the Paypal route. The Paypal account is in my husband's name, but I did identify myself in the Note to Seller box.

I'm still marveling at the beauty of the drawing.

There he lay, a vast red-golden dragon, fast asleep; a thrumming came from his jaws and nostrils, and wisps of smoke, but his fires were low in slumber. Beneath him, under all his limbs and his huge coiled tail, and about him on all sides stretching away across the unseen floors, lay countless piles of precious things, gold wrought and unwrought, gems and jewels, and silver red-stained in the ruddy light.

didn't use much imagination when she signed onto TORn. I've often wished I had picked up a good username here, as I've done on other Tolkien based websites, but here I'm stuck with my own unimaginative name. I looked at the names on the map and thought--wow! I know I could have changed when the new boards came to fruition, but by then, well, who would have known me?--a rose by any name might smell as sweetCrazy but Patty I've been since TORn started so I guess Patty I'll stay.

Also, apparently the megaupload versions work, but it takes about two hours to download each one. The DVDs are full-sized and will play on your DVD player.

No, I hadn't seen that...

Am I the only one who sometimes gets overwhelmed by all the posts here such that she misses some she most would want to see?

Thanks for pointing that out. Yes, I believe I'll NEED to have a copy of the DVDSly. I've been back to look and tear up at squee! several times, and I know that eventually you'll be obliged to take it down. I'm one who still looks at her copy of THE Oscars from time to time and tears up.Wink

Please PM me when you're ready to do them. Thanks a bunch!

Don't worry, Patty...

... your TORN nickname is fine!

I also was toying with the idea of changing my nickname for the new boards -- I've been playing around with Sindarin names and thought I'd take a crack at making up a new one -- but am glad now that I didn't.

It's funny because the opposite thought had occurred to me.

As fun as it is to see my TORn nickname on the Map, it would have been kind of fun to see my real name there. I actually used my real name the first year I was on TORn, and finally decided to change it after I saw that everyone else had nicknames. But NZStrider still calls me Karen on the boards sometimes:-) I think "Patty" is lovely, because it's your name.

I hope he does delurk!

I wrote to Daniel apart from placing my order, and had a little conversation you might enjoy:

I said:

Hi, Daniel. After all this time I feel like I know you :-) I was told you looked at some of my photos of the Unmasking; I was honored at the thought. I was one of the few people who have had the privilege of touching your fabled Map with my own hands. It is so incredibly beautiful. I've been a TORnsib since 2001. You captured the spirit of the place perfectly. Back in February, I think I was the first person to post a tentative list of correspondences between "places" on TORn and places in Middle Earth (Main should be in Hobbiton, etc.) Other people amended the list, but I'm thrilled to see so many things in that list come to fruition. You put so much love and care into the map: as many people have said, it *is* TORn. Thank you for doing this for us, and for doing it so incredibly well! I loved the look on Altaira's face when she said "How did you guys do this?" and Anne said "We didn't. Daniel Reeve did." And then she made this face: http://s226.photobucket.com/albums/dd62/AuntDoraBaggins/A%20conspiracy%20unmasked/?action=view¤t=Altaira.jpg

and then he said:

Thanks for your compliments Karen!

I've read many of the posts on the messageboard, and I feel like a part of the community now, having made a contribution by way of that little map! I'm so glad to have been part of the adventure - thanks for the opportunity!

Daniel

And then I said:

I'm so glad you've seen some of the excitement on the board. If you ever delurk, grammaboodawg will probably explode.

And then he said:

"delurk"!!! :'-D love it!

That is a silly question ;-)

To be perfectly honest, I had no idea who he was before this project began. I loved the movies, but I didn't follow the careers of the people involved. But now that I've seen what a lovely person he is, of course I would want to meet him if I had a chance. (I did love his work in the movies, I had just never connected it with a name before.) Actually, I want to go back now and look some more at his board games. I'm a big fan of games with yummy boards. And now that I've looked at his site, I'm seeing a lot of things I would buy if I hadn't blown my budget for a while ;-)

I need to tell him

that his sign "No Admittance except on Party Business" and Thror's map were the two things that caused me to fall in love with the Fellowship movie. I was so scared that the movies would be horrible, but as soon as I saw those two items I let out the breath I had been holding and knew my favorite books were in safe hands.

If Daniel ever does come to TORN, I kind of hope he does it anonymously so people get to know him as a person instead of as Daniel Reeve. As much as I know we appreciate what he's done I would want him to enjoy talking Tolkien as much as taking well-deserved congratulations for his work. He can uncloak once he's a regular and hoisted a few with us on Fiesta Friday.

I was so afraid I'd missed it, as today is the first day I've been at the computer since last weekend! But it seems I made it in time. Woo-hoo! Smile

The map is so beautiful, and I'm very happy that we're able to order copies for our very own! I intend to frame mine and put it up on the wall right next to the computer where I can always see it.

Many, many thanks to Daniel, and to everyone else involved in bringing this treasure to us. Heart

I emailed Daniel, too.

And, great glory and splendor he wrote back!

Here it is:

Dear Daniel,
I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your recent work
on the The One Ring.Net message board map. The finished product is
more beautiful than we all imagined. I'm sure by now you have heard
what a great thrill it was for Altaira and BG to receive it. I was
only a very tiny part of the conspiracy, mostly contributing things
like, "I love it!" or "Great ideas!". However, the finished map has
turned out to be greater than the sum of its many parts. Thank you
again for your brilliance, talent and time. I especially love the
fox! You're a gem!
Alassëa Eruvande (although I did use my real name when writing to him.)

Daniel's reply:

It truly was my pleasure to create the map, [Alassëa's real name]! (wow, what a neat name!)

I added some ideas of my own of course, but many things (such as the
fox) came from you TORnadoes. I guess I'm just lucky to have been
given the job of showing you guys your own ideas in concrete form
(well, paper and ink in this case, rather than concrete...).

Glad you like it!

Daniel

I'm thinking that if no one's gotten it quite yet, the celebration will have to join with next week's Homecoming Fiesta. No bad thing! This will make the celebration just that more massive!

Not yet, but I'm not worried.

A week was a bit of an optimistic estimate for them to arrive.

They should be here by the end of next week, I think.

I'm really excited. I have to think of where to put it. I need a bigger apartment. Tongue

Old gold.

We've got quite a bit of brass around the place, so that should fit in well. A fairly narrow frame, as I didn't want to overwhelm (or overshadow) the map.

I'll post a picture when I get it back (remind me if I don't!).

Wow I thought I would be dead last hear at the bottom of the peninsula, out in the gator infested wilds! # 25 is nice number, half of how old I am. I wonder if I can get a frame for it that will seal it air tight so the humidity won't damage it and nasty little teeny tiny ants can't crawl up in there and die leaving ugly little black and brown spots. I can't remember who it was.

It was years ago, in the first or second age maybe. Someone was trying to put up a gazebo, and it collapsed on him and he was inside holding it up in the middle, just like Sam under Shelob.

Anyway, your subject line sure made me smile :-)

I got mine yesterday...

#40-something-or-other... wasn't really paying attention and I already put away somewhere to keep it out of reach of small hands. When I have a moment to myself, I'll pull it out and give it a through inspection. I was a little disappointed to find that it was creased in two places in the middle of the map... I'm kind of a perfectionist when it comes to merchandise I buy and hate that sort of thing, but it's beautiful enough that I think I can overlook it. Shame I have to keep it hidden away from dangerous fidgety fingers. Frown

Message from Daniel

Daniel suggested I post this. It's from an e-mail he sent:

I've been getting lots of Thank You emails from TORnSibs everywhere, and I've had a few looks at the threads on the messageboards. It all brings to mind the following (read "maps" for "invitations", and make a couple of other substitutions, and you'll get the picture):

'People became enthusiastic; and they began to tick off the days on the calendar; and they watched eagerly for the postman, hoping for invitations.

Before long the invitations began pouring out, and the Hobbiton post-office was blocked, and the Bywater post-office was snowed under, and voluntary assistant postmen were called for. There was a constant stream of them going up the Hill, carrying hundreds of polite variations on Thank you, I shall certainly come." '

Each cloak was fastened about the neck with a brooch like a green leaf veined with silver.
`Are these magic cloaks?' asked Pippin, looking at them with wonder.

So perhaps I'll wait a while to send my thank-you email. I can imagine contacting Daniel next November: "I've been enjoying my map for a year now..." That might be more helpful than overflowing his inbox right now.

I think mine's here

I got a notice in the mail yesterday that there was a parcel waiting for me at the post office. We live in a rural area and don't get door-to-door delivery, and anything too large for the mailboxes is held at the post office. I am asking my hubby to pick it up today for me because we are supposed to be going out of town tomorrow, and I don't want to wait 'til next week. Besides, I might have to work late today and won't get there in time.

I haven't taken mine to be framed yet

My two sons will be visiting this weekend, and they've teased me so often about being such a geek (and look who's talking, Mr. Fantasy Football and Mr. RPGamer!) that I want to show them that I have achieved the acme of geekitude!

I'm thinking a rust-red mat, to repeat the color shading the coastline, would look great, but we'll see what the frame-guy says -- he's done several things for us and is very good.

Daniel's detailing is wonderful - I keep seeing new things each time I look - we are very, very honoured Tornsibs.

Glad to see the maps arriving in the UK

Isn't it beautiful?

That's perfect !

He does indeed seem to be a most wonderful person ! I will be e-mailing him my thanks shortly to let him know that # 17 of 55 arrived safe, unharmed and is still snug in its tube. I'm waiting until I move ( whenever that may be ! ) for framing.

The Map itself is a spectacular piece of art. I find myself handling the Map very delicately. It does bring tears to ones eyes to have it in your possession.

There's something of everything here, The Shire and the Golden Wood and Gondor and kings' houses and inns and meadows and mountains all mixed.

....and there are Elves when you want them.

I got # 44

Sorry, I didn't see that you had compiled a list!

Mine came last week - by chance I'd switched shifts with a colleague that day, so was at home to take it right out of the postman's hands.

I wrote a thankyou note to Daniel, and got a lovely reply saying how glad he was that it had made it safely all the way to Ireland!

...and the sails were drawn up, and the wind blew,
and slowly the ship slipped away down the long grey firth;
and the light of the glass of Galadriel that Frodo bore
glimmered and was lost.

Info on the paper for the print

diedye asked Daniel what type of paper used for the prints, and here's his reply:

I got an answer back from Daniel Reeve on what kind of paper it was made of:

Quote
...the maps are acid-free, linen-free, lignin-free. They're printed on Lyson Fine Art (Smooth) paper, 100% cotton - it's archival quality.

And, Altaira, you may be interested to know this about that your map:

I drew (and painted) the original map on Fabriano Artistico E/W Soft-Pressed 300gsm watercolour paper, also 100% cotton, acid-free etc, archival paper.

I got a very nice reply from Daniel the other day

I sent him a thank you email just after I got my map, and received a nice response from him this week:

"Thanks for letting me know it arrived safely Rebecca, and also for your comliments. As I'm sure you realise, I got pretty attached to that project, so I'm glad that everyone seems happy with the result, and I'm pleased with the prints - they do it justice. I hope your print brings you lots of enjoyment!"

Now i've just got to decide on the perfect frame for it!

My Map is Home!

I picked my Map up from the framer today. It's beautiful. I missed it while it was gone and I'm so glad to have it safely home again. I haven't hung it on the wall yet, but it's leaning against the wall where it will be hung. Probably a project for next weekeend.

I don't have a great picture since the only way I can take a digital image is from my cell phone, and it's a dark, rainy day today so there isn't a lot of light. But here's what I have:

If I get a sunny day I'll get another picture and post it.

Another map is home!

The frame shop finished mine a bit early, and the Gaffer hung it on the wall of my (home) office yesterday. Isn't it purty?

The russet mat-border is textured like the surface of the map itself. The black frame has parallel ridges that I see as lines of print in the books -- because, after all, the books are what frame everything here.

The little picture to the left of the map is one I took of the Scottish seacoast. While I moved the other pictures that were originally on my wall, I left that one there, opposite the Grey Havens part of the map. I've always seen Scotland as my personal far green country under a swift sunrise, after all.

It's back! It's beautiful! my pictures stink!

OK, I don't have a working camera right now and can't get a good picture of it, but I'll send what I can get on my cell phone.

It's a "marbled" brown mat with some dark reddish-brown mixed in--I don't know why the picture makes the marbling look greenish, it isn't. The frame is carved with leaves, which are hard to see. It looks wonderful. Maybe I can get a better picture over Christmas when one of my kids gets here!

Obviously it's not on the wall, yet!

I can't seem to type under the pictures, so there's one of the frame corner, and then one of some detail of the frame in an attempt to show the leaves...darn this camera phone! It looks a lot better than this picture. The leaves are brown with an antiqued background.

Anyway, I love it!

It's wonderful what a variety of colors, shapes and styles of frames look perfect with our Map!

I told myself that the map was my birthday present to myself, and the frame was my Christmas present. It worked out perfectly.

So I got a surprise on Saturday.

I had left my map at my parents' house when I moved, because it did not have a proper frame. This past Saturday I went to their house to use their computer and have dinner. When noticing the new arrangement of the furniture in the front room, I saw a large framed object in a plastic bag leaning against the wall. So I bent over to take a long at this, as the frame was not one I had seen before.

To my great astonishment, it was my map! They had gotten it framed for me without telling me. It is so beautiful! I will borrow my mom's camera so that I can get a proper picture of it and post it, because I feel a great desire to show it off. I brought it home that night and was so excited to have it, I forgot that it was midnight and my upstairs neighbor would not like to be woken up from sleep by a hammer pounding downstairs. So I hung it up in my bedroom. Oh, it is a lovely thing!

After I had calmed down from my initial surprise on Saturday, and could be torn away from looking at the map, mom told me that they had planned to tease me with it, I suppose by hanging it in their house to see if I noticed. And then I was told that it was an early birthday present. My birthday is more than four months away. But as the value of the framing job is a whole lot more than the cost of the map, I can be very happy with this present.

Finally Framed

I can't tell you how I felt last week when I went past the frame shop where it was and there were fire trucks in front and firmen on top. Fortunately, the map was in the workshop in the other store...WHEW!

And here's the obligatory closeup of the frame :-)

another gorgeous result!

I like how the line of carving on the inside of the frame itself is between the mat and the plainer outside of the frame; it sets off the map beautifully, for some reason (I'm no artist, I only know what I like). It sort of echoes the inner dark mat (or that dark rectangular line on the inside of the mat) and draws my eye right to the map!

Very classy.

you are too kind... I went back TWICE LOL

and made changes. I took it to the shop on my birthday (11/16) and changed my mind about the mat (yeah, that's a green mat behind the tan one) then went back the week after that and changed my mind on the frame. Fortunately the shop moves at a glacial speed and nothing had been done, but after my second change of heart I told them to have it ready after Christmas and promised I'd not change it again.

I love yours with that dark and yet delicate frame. I wish I had the courage to do something really special like that. Yours looks fabulous.

I had the hardest time deciding, and finally put myself in the hands of the person at the frame shop. He gave me several options and I made the final selection. You made a great choice, even if it took a couple attempts!

Congratulations. I might actually get mine on the wall this weekend - it's been propped up on the mantel for weeks.

I think it's just dark in the picture

We seem to have had no sun for months, and the picture I took showed a darker mat than what I really have. It's kind of a fawn color, with a silvery-gold frame (if that makes any sense). I still need to get a proper picture of it.

My parents are just the best. My mom was surprised that I hung the map in my room, instead of out in the hall, but I like to look at it. I don't have enough people visiting my apartment that I need to keep it in the hall to show it off.

"Any kind of plan where you lose your hat... is a bad plan."

'But it does not seem that I can trust anyone,' said Frodo.
Sam looked at him unhappily. 'It all depends on what you want,' put in Merry. 'You can trust us to stick to you through thick and thin - to the bitter end. Very nice indeed. Not only...

will this map always remind you of TORN and the movies, but you will always think of your parents' love when you look at it.

For Gondor!

What a nice surprise!

And I love the frame and matting. Your mat looks similar to mine.
