I've displayed one painting already of Bag End in the Mist on another post but I am painting other ones about "The Hobbit" and dont want to annoy by reposting them on seperate threads. So i will be displaying them on this one as I make them. Check back every week if you like to see whats new. I will also put a link to where they are all dispayed at once. Hope you like them. they are a lil out of focus ( taking the pics on my blackberry) http://s773.photobucket.com/albums/yy16/michaelg04/

And your idea of posting within the same thread is a good one but might I suggest that like the Today in Middle Earth posts that when this thread moves to the second page you make a new one.

Thank You.

You are very kind with your comments. To answer your question, no, I have never concidered selling them or would know the first step on how to. I use oil paints with a medium of purified poppy oil. This oil dosent yellow the picture in time as Lindseed oil tends ( for me at least.) I use a pre streched canvas with white gesso already applied ( I use the art store PEARL as my one stop shopping.) through my practicing, i have come to rely on the basics of BOB ROSS and infuse the concept capibilities of Alan Lee and John Howe. Once again Thank you ALL who post for taking the time to comment on the paintings. I truely welcome all feedback and suggestions. :)

A view inside Mirkwood looking out to the entrance of the forrest. i wanted to convey the idea to the person looking at the painting that they know whats inside , waiting, for our travelers on the road even though from their perseption the forrest looks pleasent enough in the beginning. oil on canvas 24"x 36".
Hope you like it. Starting another one now. Should be done by the end of the week.

You could also consider prints

I don't have the room for paintings in my house. I actually have very little wall space due to how the house is constructed and laid out.

But I love buying smaller versions of art I like - especially postcard and notecard versions I can give to friends as gifts.

well, I was thinking of high quality versions

You'd get them scanned and color corrected as needed to professional standards. I don't think that image shot with your phone is going to print well at all. :-)

But you wouldn't make money off that anyhow. I think you could possibly make money off prints of these images. But I've never tried making serious money off my hobbies so I may be overreaching.

for your confidence in believing that the paintings are worth the possibility of being sold, in any form. I would have to look into the matter of prints as you suggested or even if I can leagally sell a painting , or print, that is a subject of "The Hobbit" or " Lord of the Rings".

I don't know where you live

but I know that my area (Twin Cities, MN, USA) has various forms of mentoring / support for creatives. It may be worth looking around for someone who does something similar in your area (turning art into prints, etc.) and asking if they'd give you an informational interview. Or a local college just might have a class of some sort for the business end of artists.

Definitely look around etsy.com for what people are offering and the price.

Another brilliant painting

Thanks for sharing another brilliant painting of yours demanon. I particuarly like the background of the painting - very Shire-like!

Only one slight comment (and what do I know after all), the perspective on the building seems a bit odd. It might just be me - I think it is just how you have made the door on a different level to the left side of the building which is tricking my eyes! Smile

Brilliant though! What is your next project? Also, what size are these paitings, and how long do they take to plan & paint?

Thank You !!

It hard to tell from the pic ( blackberry ) but the left side to the door is actually jutting out in an L formation.Gandalf is resting his back up against that wall blowing smoke rings. the original has more color value that the pic is not showing so its kinda hard to tell the seperation. Its Oil on canvas 24" by 36" and took me one week after work ( and a weekend to finish). thank you again for liking my works. If you have a suggestion of a scene from The Hobbit I would love to give it a shot. Cheers

or the others yet. There are six of the 13 dwarves outside on the road. The others are warming themselves by the fire inside The Green Dragon enjoying a last mug of fine hobbit ale before their long journey. The night clerk at the inn wasnt too happy about rolling up a fresh keg from the pantry at sun up by the way. Hey , since you were the first to respond, would you help me out and deciding for me who would be outside in this situation? I would appreciate it alot

My first though was Balin

When I first saw this little fellow I thought of Balin - he seems the type to make sure everything is prepared before they set off. If you want to stay true to the book, it could be Dwalin, as he has a green cloak on (at least, it looks green to me!)

As for future suggestions, what might be nice (being bias just because I like you Dwarves Wink) is them huddled inside the cave in the Misty Mountains with thunder and lightning outside? You could paint any scene though and it would be great! Real talent demanon Smile

The Calm Before the Storm

DanielLB suggested the scene here. The dwarves, along with Gandalf and Bilbo, have found refuge from the elements outside. I did the scene in a "concept" painting form to get the size of the cave and lighing from the lightning and gandalf's staff right. Closeups of the painting can , as always, be found on this link http://s773.photobucket.com/albums/yy16/michaelg04/, you might even spot a Stone Giant or two in the closeups also :). Hope you like it.

As ever demanon - this is stunning. I never really thought about the cave being that big, but it certainly works! Laugh

The lightning looks great - as does the lighting of the cave. Gandalf and the Dwarves look great! The trolls in the background also add a brilliant and special touch *tumbs way up*

Edit to add: I also find it astonishing you got it done so quickly!

the legalaties of selling prints of my painting refrencing JRR's, published works. Making money off of someone elses ideas is a big no no. I have seen artists sell their works based on a book or film however I do not know if they got permission to do so before acting. I wouldnt want to tick off the Tolkien family in any way. PJ's, or more to the point , Alan Lee the artists interpitation of Rivendell is of course a favorite of mine, but i went with a childhood experience with this one.
