'The Hobbit' trailer anticipation thread!

With less than 24 hours to go, I thought it would be a nice idea to have a thread to let out all our excitement, anticipation, eagerness, exhilaration (and any other synonyms you can think of!), and count down the seconds until it's released.

As I type this it is just 16 hours to go until it is revealed somewhere on the internet!

For those who it is released during the night, will you be staying up or setting an alarm?

Is anybody having a gathering of friends and/or family around the computer?

Is anyone having/planning a mini party? Popcorn and drinks? Yes it’s only 2 minutes but it’s a big deal!

Who can’t stop thinking about it that there work today is going to be greatly affected?!

Is anyone so excited that their friend/spouse/sibling/parent/other has told you to shut up?

Tell us what you will be doing at 7pm PST and let out your excitement!

I suspect that the trailer, once online, is going to be everywhere the following day, and more than likely reach top 10 searched for google/yahoo etc, and tweeting worldwide!

Let the countdown begin!!

It's supposed to be released 4:00 am

over here - so I'm debating with myself as to whether I should stay up, or wake up early and set the clock or just get a long night's sleep and watch it calmly when I wake up, hopefully in the best available HD quality on whatever site it is available on.

The greatest adventure is what lies ahead.

Wondering about the same.

I have to get up at 06:30 AM anyways, so I might just go to bed very early and set my alarm to 03:55, watch the trailer and try to go back to sleep (which will probably be very hard) Smile

Alarm clock

Well, I'm Spanish, so the trailer will premiere here at 03:00 AM. The next day I have class in college, so I think I'm going to put the alarm clock to wake up, watch it, talk a little about it with you guys and go back to sleep (if I can).

what about resolution

im wondering if the films shot in 5k will they also release a Ultra-high-definition trailer something along the lines of 4k. That would be truly EPIC!

Will definatley get no sleep before it is dropped upon me at 4am.

The videoblog is never late. Nor is it early.
It arrives precisely when it means to.

I don't understand why it's not in 48 fps...

Quint said it will be in 24fps because of the lack of 48fps projectors... but a PC monitor or TV can output 48 or 60 fps fine, most the games I play are at 60fps... Crazy

It will be released arouns 5 am if my math skills works...

(I hate timezones...)
So I will sleep and wake up with the good feeling that all the hardcore fans (not that I'm not hardcore) have been fighting to get the trailer, and then uploaded it and spread it around the internet :)
So I won't stay up or wake up in the middle of the night for this :P
I can wait because I'm not conscious while sleeping anyway, so it won't feel longer anyway ;)

I want to be part of all the excitement and everything as soon as it is released.

I used to frequent another forum when Return of the King trailer was released - and I got a real buzz about being part of it at the time.

Like you said I don't want to trawl through hundreds of posts, or make posts about seeing something in the trailer (like: OMG!!!111 did you see Gollum's foot, as that would be me), which someone had already pointed out a million posts ago and and had already been discussed Blush lol!

This is a really bad day for doing work...

I really really wanted

to wait until I go see Tin Tin tomorrow night in theaters, to get my first experience with the trailer.
But I don't think I can wait,
plus I work at a TV network called Reelz, that's all about movies, so it is going to be PLASTERED everywhere tomorrow in my office....and all of the people that always make fun of me for my 'obsession' with all things Tolkien will be pestering me all day, asking if I've seen the new trailer.
But thankfully I'm only an hour different that pst so i won't have to get up in the middle of the night.

More traffic

It would be interesting to find out whether there has been an increase in traffic into TORn and the forum over the last couple of days. Would also be interesting to find out what the maximum people visiting here at 7pm PST is. Is there anyway of finding this out? I know if you click on "Who's Online" you can get basic information, but out of pure interest a time-series of visitor count would be interesting!

…see if my fellow Ringer friend in town wants to come and see, but she's usually hard to get a hold of, so it's probably just going to be me, the computer, and the television (I'm taking no chances!), and then directly to the message boards.

I'm so excited that my brain's gone numb, but I know everything will kick in once that trailer goes up.

For theatres

It's because trailers are still designed primarily to be shown in theatres, and theaters can't reliably do 48fps (plus, the movies it's attached to will not be in 48fps, which would mean they'd need one projector to show the preview and another to show the film. No one's going to do that).

They could hypothetically make a 48fps internet-only version of the trailer, but I guess they decided it wasn't worth the extra effort.

I'm not sure about the rest of the country/world

but here in New Mexico (which is in fact, part of the United States), we have mostly digital projectors. So I don't think two projectors would be necessary to show a 24fps feature, and 48fps trailer. They are all just files on a hard drive.

It will only be 9 pm for me

so I hope to be able to see it as soon as it is released or not long after. Only problem for me is that it will be 10:30 pm at the latest for most of the Americas and in many cases it will be earlier, so I'm expecting a LOT of internet traffic.

I'm actually OK with waiting a couple of hours to see the trailer for myself and just watching everyone here on the message boards. The reactions will be a lot of fun, and I'll learn a lot about what's in the trailer from everyone here. We're going to have a party of epic proportions! Cool

Digital projectors

It is just files on a hard drive, but is every digital projector capable of projecting at any frame rate? If so, then what's all the fuss about theaters needing to buy new projectors in order to show The Hobbit?

I know this isn't the most reliable source...

but the quickest and easiest thing I found was on wikipedia...talking about digital projectors in cinema..

-Digital cinema refers to the use of digital technology to distribute and project motion pictures. A movie can be distributed via hard drives, optical disks (such as DVDs and Blu-ray Discs) or satellite and projected using a digital projector instead of a conventional film projector. Digital cinema is distinct from high-definition television and, in particular, is not dependent on using television or high-definition video standards, aspect ratios, or frame rates. Digital projectors capable of 2K resolution began deploying in 2005, and since 2006, the pace has accelerated (2K refers to images with 2,048 pixels of horizontal resolution).-

It seems that digital projectors should not be under any frame rate constraints...at least not the lower frame rates.

Who''s Online is your best bet

The bottom half shows the total number of visitors in 15-minute increments. Our Super-Users, Altaira, Ataahua and Inferno, have access to a little bit more information, but not much.

Our biggest obstacle is filtering out all the search bots that show up as visitors to get an accurate count of real traffic. Those bots will be on the increase also as the trailer is released since they are looking for specific references. The more references, the more often they hit the site.

Backward compatability

Ok that makes sense, but the other problem still exists. Previews are advertisements and you want your ads to get the widest circulation possible. Releasing it in 24fps means it can be attached to virtually any movie, while releasing it in 48 would mean it could only be shown on the individual 48fps-capable digital projectors at the individual theaters that have them (I suppose they are still releasing separate 2d and 3d versions?)

WRONG BACK!

Every computer monitor can handle 60Hz no problem. As for TVs, they are technically capable of displaying 60fps, heck, some TVs have ridiculously high refresh rates of 200Hz and more, though you'd need new software to make the TV 'understand' the new format. The real problem will be 60fps fullHD in 3D, because the cables don't have enough bandwith for that.

Well, with digital distribution it's not really that much of a pain.

Screens that could do 48fps would get the 48fps trailer and those that don't the 24fps trailer. You would still be able to show the 48fps trailer in front of every movie. The trailer is a separate thing from the movie.

Sadly,I have school tomorow so there is no chance that I can see it exactly when it is released,so I will watch it at about 7pm when I return home.I think I'm going to shut down my brain in school for the most part and only concentrate on The Hobbit!!!SmileSmile

I am going to try and stay up for the

premier at 3am UK time, are other folks planning to do the same? It'd be nice to be able to discuss it with folksSmile Five hours!

So Frodo Baggins boarded the great ship and passed on into the west till the sweet fragrance on the air filled his sense and the sound of singing came over the water. Then it seemed to him that, as in a dream, he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country. The third age of Middle Earth was over, the days of the Rings had passed and the story and song of those times was at an end.

it would be debutting on the Apple movie trailer website but it may well be on the WB site as well.

So Frodo Baggins boarded the great ship and passed on into the west till the sweet fragrance on the air filled his sense and the sound of singing came over the water. Then it seemed to him that, as in a dream, he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country. I wouldn't count on YouTube

The trailer for Dark Knight Rises was released just yesterday or so. Of course, it was immediately uploaded to YT - and equally immediately taken down by WB because of copyright violation.

I hope someone catches the stream and puts the video onto some file hosting site like Mediafire for us to download on our own computers.

I can only speak for myself, but I'm going to watch it as soon as possible, no matter what the quality. Pathetic spoiler-hunting I know, but it's a joy of its own really.

However, I trust the stream is going to be of high quality and very watchable.

Frankly, I don't really care if it's illegal or not

I only care if I manage to do it or not.

For Eru's sake, it's a fricking trailer. It's supposed to be seen.

I violate copyright daily by watching fan videos on YouTube with footage set to music, so watching an illegal copy of a trailer doesn't really hurt anymore.

According to the description we had earlier (SPOILERS!)

SPOILERS

We're not going to see Radagast in the trailer. Nor anyone new, really. If the report was true, I'm at loss what he might be hiding.

Really, I hope it was a fake report and we'll see Radagast, Beorn, Wargs, spiders and stuff. But just seeing Bilbo and the Dwarves acting is enough.

so to clarify

is it going online at 3am UK time and then being left up? Or is it being uploaded briefly then removed?

I don't think so.

I wouldn't expect to see too much CGI in this teaser, or much from the 2nd film, considering there is still 6 months or so to go, and WETA Digital is fast, but not that fast at completing effects. I don't expect to see spiders or wargs or eagles just yet. Maybe trolls though, and a little Gollum, as that was pretty early on in the shoot.

Actually that's not quite true.

My monitor is well above 2K on my i7 iMac.

But to your point... the trailer will not be streamed in 4K.The vast majority of people's monitors are at your stated resolution.

However... Sony just announced a 4K projector for home theater systems priced at $800.

Hey all, new to the boards but not to the legendarium. I've been wanting to sign up for some time but I always seem to get hung-up on picking a username. :P I knew it was already getting pretty late into the filming and the anticipation is building greatly. To not be on the boards during the trailer release seemed like a tragedy. It's a historical time for the fanbase. :)
