Film News in Glenorchy

Miss Awen writes: I arrived in Glenorchy today and could not find any accommodation, because it's all fully booked for the crew of the Hobbit. I also found out, that they are filming now at the other side of the lake, half an hour from Glenorchy. The stars stay in Queenstown and they are flown on set by helicopter.

Near Kinlock?

If I remember correctly from my stay the Kinlock lodge is on the far side of the lake from Glenorchy, probabley the out out of the way part of the lake that has road access.. Thats actually a very versital area I'd say since you've got the lake itself, wild mountain forrest and also a fair bit of farmland.

Missed them all by a couple of days

We were in Queenstown last week and went on a Rings Safari. Our guide took us to the location of Isengard which is just past The Hobbit set. We stopped to take a couple of pictures at the set gates (no one seemed to mind) then went on to Isengard. The road to the set is unpaved and pretty narrow passing through beech forest used in LOTR as Lothlorien. I'm not sure how they have managed to get the trucks along that road to the set construction. Glenorchy has a small airstrip and I guess the helicopters are landing there. The road from Queenstown to Glenorchy and then through Arcadia Station to the set is pretty narrow and windy and i wouldn't envy any of the cast or crew having to make that trip every day.

I have some photos but need to check size restrictions for this site before posting.

Road to Glenorchy set

Hopefully these pics are the correct size. (I'll put them in a couple of posts so as not to exceed size allowance for multiple pics. )

Great pics!

Thanks for sharing them! (And for keeping them within the size restrictions Wink.)

So pretty.

Those mountains truly are jaw-droppingly beautiful. It wouldn't be hard to get up on early mornings when you're seeing those out your bedroom window.
