KEY ROLES FILLED BY STUART TOWNSEND, SAIORSE RONAN FOR THE HOBBIT

Wellington, NZ, April 1, 2011—Production is underway in Wellington, New Zealand, on "The Hobbit," filmmaker Peter Jackson's two film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's widely read masterpiece.

Set in Middle-earth, "The Hobbit" takes place 60 years before Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings," which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar-winning "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King."

Joining the all-star cast is actor Stuart Townsend as the grim and heroic Bard. Bard is a skilled archer from the town of Dale, who finds himself holding the fate of his people on the string of his bow. Stuart is no stranger to Middle-earth as he was originally cast as Aragorn in the Oscar-winning "The Lord of the Rings" Trilogy but left the production for personal reasons. "This is a great chance for Stuart to return to Middle-earth and bring his immeasurable talents to the production," said casting director Thomas Williams.

Saiorse Ronan also joins the cast in the role of Itaril, a quick and lithe Silvan elf who is dedicated to protecting the Elf King of Mirkwood. Ms. Ronan was previously directed by Peter Jackson in 2009's critically acclaimed 'The Lovely Bones.'

"The Hobbit" cast already includes Martin Freeman (Bilbo Baggins) and Ian McKellen (Gandalf). The Dwarves are played by Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakenshield), Ken Stott (Balin), Graham McTavish (Dwalin), William Kircher (Bifur) James Nesbitt (Bofur), Stephen Hunter (Bombur), Rob Kazinsky (Fili), Aidan Turner (Kili), Peter Hambleton (Gloin), John Callen (Oin), Jed Brophy (Nori), Mark Hadlow (Dori) and Adam Brown (Ori). Reprising their roles from “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy are Cate Blanchett as Galadriel, Andy Serkis as Gollum and Elijah Wood as Frodo. Further announcements are expected.

"The Hobbit" films are co-produced by New Line Cinema and MGM, with New Line managing production. Warner Bros Pictures is handling worldwide theatrical distribution, with select international territories as well as all international television licensing being handled by MGM. The two films are planned for release in late 2012 and 2013, respectively.

ABOUT NEW LINE CINEMA:

New Line Cinema continues to be one of the most successful independent film companies. For more than 40 years, its mission has been to produce innovative, popular, profitable entertainment in the best creative environment. A pioneer in franchise filmmaking, New Line produced the Oscar-winning "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, which is a landmark in the history of film franchises. New Line Cinema is a division of Warner Bros.

ABOUT PETER JACKSON/WINGNUT FILMS:

Peter Jackson is one of the world's most successful filmmakers. His monumental achievement co-writing, co-producing and directing The Lord of the Rings trilogy (with fellow Academy Award winners and frequent collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens) earned a total of 30 Academy Award nominations and 17 Academy Awards. Jackson and Walsh received their first Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay for their acclaimed film Heavenly Creatures. Jackson, through his New Zealand-based Wingnut Films banner, also was responsible for the globally successful 2005 remake of King Kong which earned over $500 million worldwide and 3 Academy Awards. Jackson most recently directed the Academy Award nominated The Lovely Bones; an adaptation of the acclaimed best-selling novel by Alice Sebold, which to date has earned nearly $100 million worldwide; and produced the global sensation, District 9, which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. He is also developing a trilogy of films with Steven Spielberg based on Tintin, the world renowned comic book series by Herge. In 2010 he received a Knighthood for his services to film.

I don't know what to hope.

If this is an Aprils Fool its in remarkably poor taste. Townsend has said before that being replaced was the worst moment in his career. Not really fitting subject matter for a prank. On the other hand, if its real, then its a very nice gesture of reconciliation.

Um, welllllllllll .....

There's no doubt about it being a wind-up - at the bottom of the press release it clearly says "what is the date again?"

A bit repetetive and predictable really, as they did the whole faux press release thing last year .... Unsure

Not so sure I like it being at the expense of poor old Townsend, either - kinda mean spirited when his film career never really took off and had to watch Viggo and the cast of the LOTR films hit the stratosphere. I for one would've genuinely loved him to get a role he was suited for this time round (a handsome elf or something?) after all that he went through as an (admittedly) miscast Aragorn. As Alatar points out, it would have also been a lovely gesture from PJ and the team. Shame. Pirate

That said, I have a feeling ....

It could well be that Torn have staged a double bluff this time. We all know from her casting agent's slip of the tongue a month or so ago, that Saiorise has effectively been cast as Itaril. We also know her story concerns a romance with a young elf lord.

I have a feeling Townsend may have been cast for this part.

The April Fool part lies in kidding us he had been cast in the most Aragon-esque role again, in this case the grim-faced Bard, for which he still would still be neither rugged nor old enough.

We shall see .... Unsure

I also hope the double bluff possibility proves right in some way.

To play this sort of April fool 'joke' reflecting on individual actor's careers (both of them) without their express permission would be more than poor taste to me. In fact unnecessarily disrespectful and damaging - especially dragging up the casting problem again with Stuart T.

Got to love having one day a year that allows you to be an evil little fiend. We could use more of that if you ask me, lots of way too serious people that could afford to get over themselves once in awhile.

Not cool

Really poor taste for ToRN to do something like this at the expense of Stuart - if this is truly an April Fools Joke. If it was, there are so many other ways to have a harmless chuckle and not drag actors into the mix and cannibalize ToRN's community and trust with a post like this. But then again, maybe it is legit.

Yup, Hope its an april fools, including Itaril

That Itaril character still worries me. Apart from the fact that it would be inventing a brand new character, and probably a new sidestory, I also dont care if teenage girls wont have an active female character they can identify with! This isnt Twillight.

Give Galadriel a bigger role then, shes played by an amazing and beautiful actress, and a cool, and above all ORIGINAL character that has a natural role in the storyline with The White Council etc

Yikes

I'm not a long-time member of TORN, so this one caught me by surprise.

If this really is April Fool's, I gotta admit - for me, it's an awkward choice at best on the subject matter.

The only details I have about the Aragorn switch for LOTR are PJ's comments from the behind the scenes extras on the extended edition DVDs. So, I don't know exactly what happened. And trust me, I'm thrilled that Viggo ended up with the role - I cannot imagine anyone else in that role - his commitment and investment into the process was/is outstanding, as was his performance.

BUT, it just seems in poor taste to throw this out there publicly and then have it be April Fool's. It's clearly a sensitive topic for folks, and I wouls assume especially for Mr. Townsend.

And, if it's a double fake-out - uh, okay, but still think another topic would have sufficed for an April Fool's.

My understanding is that it was "creative differences."

Maybe that counts as "through no fault of his own," but it happens in the acting industry all time. An actor wouldn't last long if he couldn't cope with it happening to him.

I'm not really sure why people are reacting...

so strongly to this. I doubt Stuart Townsend has ever been on these boards, and if he isn't used to the rumor mill that is the world wide web by now, then I would have to ask what rock he is living under.

tORN had to pick relevant topics to make the joke... Itaril and the casting of Bard seem very relevant to me. They keep coming up as topics on the boards again and again and again and again and again and again...

If Stuart Townsend can't laugh at himself after 10 years, then I would say he can hold a pretty serious grudge.

Ah well, I thought it was funny. Laugh

I've figured this for an April fool from the start.

I must say though, I agree with those who say its a little insensitive to Stuart. . . if he ever reads or hears about it, at least.

As to the lovely Miss Saoirse and Itaril. . . the joke may just be on YOU and ALL of us if she is cast and that made up role is greatly expanded in the ways we worst fear. The purveyor of that particular joke had better knock on wood. . . it isn't wise to tempt the hand of Fate.

P.S., It is the role itself, or its expansion, that would be the rub, certainly not her casting therein. She looks perfectly suited to be a fair Elf Maiden.

"Hear me, hounds of Sauron, Gandalf is here! Fly if you value your foul skins, I will shrivel you from tail to snout if you step within this circle!"

It's a joke and people need to laugh... it's a part of life. And it really isn't at the expense of Stuart Townsend... it was 10 years ago and he was off the film before he even got started.

It's about context. Bard and Itaril are two hot topics... so of course they are going to joke about it. The casting of Bard and the rumor of Itaril as a character are two of the most talked about topics on tORN. Laugh

Well played!

I was expecting a prank today and this seemed the most likely source. But once I started reading the release, and noting the format (right down to the "’s") I wasn't so sure. On the one hand ST seemed a can of worms. On the other SR seemed an acceptable angle. Balance and presentation made it seem legit.

I skipped the blurbs at the end (as usual, but how did you know that?!?!?!) so I missed the "what date is it again?" That is until DamienEngland pointed it out (bless his soul for ending my confusion).

In other words, against my better judgement, I was duped.

I think Stuart Townsend has thicker skin than this, and would probably laugh at it himself, now.

Although I am sure it was painful at the time.

How's that saying go--something like, "comedy equals tragedy plus time" ? Or something like that.

Incidentally, I really thought a lot of Stuart for sitting alongside his then girlfriend Charlize Theron as she was favorited to win the Oscar the same year RotK was. He was there as support for her, in HER triumph, even though he had to have felt awkward. You've got to give the man credit.

Yeah, he really wasn't right for Aragorn. But I would like to see him succeed at something.

To clarify...

I posted earlier about my thoughts on the appropriateness of the subject matter, and after reading some of the posts which came after mine, offer a little more insight into where I was coming from.....

Do I think Stuart will see the post and be extremely upset by it? Nope. Evil

Am I a naive noob who doesn't know that the entertainment industry is a business just like any other and that actors and fans need to be big boys and girls about decisions made in said business? Nope. Wink

I wasn't on TORN at the time the LOTR movies were being made. SO, I have no idea all of the discussion and scuttlebut that was going on about the recasting of Aragorn at that time. BUT, I would bet that those die-hard fans who were participating in TORN at that time had lots to "chat" about with that situation. And I'm sure there were folks on both sides of the fence who thought it was a good switch and some who thought it wasn't. Assuming that there might have been some "drama" on the board around the issue (yes, I know what assuming does) - it seemed a provocative topic to pick for a joke. Especially considering how many fans are waiting on the edge of their seat for casting news, LOL.

And for the record, I enjoy the spirit of April Fool's Day. Case in point - I thought Ian McKellen's April Fool's blog post was a hoot. Sly

I'll give TORN this - they certainly know how to spark a good debate. Wink

so strongly to this.

I must say that I think this 'joke' is in poor taste. Like many others have stated, most of the LotR actors saw their careers rocket (for the first few years at any rate). Think of the doors that that role could have opened for him.

and, for those familiar with TORn, the date, there is nothing to indicate it is a joke. And setting the likelihood that Townsend would be interested in working for PJ again aside, the content is completely plausible.

What about the actors they cast as Gil-Galad and Elendil, who mostly ended up on the cutting room floor? Are we supposed to still tiptoe around their feelings, too? Their names haven't exactly become household words, either.

Nasty?

Still not understanding where people are getting bad taste, mean spirited, nasty... from this at all.

Stuart Townsend has had access to many opportunities and unfortunately for him, they haven't panned out.

He recently walked out on the blockbuster "Thor" directed by none other than the fantastic Kenneth Branagh.... over "creative differences". This was announced January 31st of this year.

It starts to make me wonder after awhile. He got fired from Lord of the Rings from a major role and 10 years later he walks from a film that will have international exposure with huge names attached (Kenneth Branagh, Natalie Portman).

Also, he was the partner of Charlize Theron for 10 years until this January. Which means they started dating when the Lord of the Rings fist came out.

Charlize Theron is one of the most successful actors in the world. Her life was completely intertwined with Stuart Townsend. Why is this important? How is this relevant? The one thing that people who work in the business understand is that its all about who you know.

Stuart would have had access to some of the top people in the film making world... just by association... for 10 years.

Frankly, if he can't create a connection and jump-start his career with all of the opportunity that he has seen... I don't feel bad for him at all.

Middle Earth is New Zealand!

Assuming that there might have been some "drama" on the board around the issue (yes, I know what assuming does) - it seemed a provocative topic to pick for a joke.

IIRC, a lot of people had been very concerned (or outright unhappy) about Townsend's casting in the first place, so mostly the reaction was people concerned about the last-minuteness and who would replace him. If my memory isn't being too selective, I think Viggo's casting was greeted with relief and satisfaction by most.

Quote
Especially considering how many fans are waiting on the edge of their seat for casting news, LOL.

Yes, that's why they did it...easier to "get" people who are already pre-emotional over something. Your work is practically done for you. Evil As an April Fool's prank, I thought this was pretty good - equal parts believable and controversial. The TORN PTB do love to get people riled up on this day, though nothing beats the year they announced that New Line had taken over the site....that one caused outright panic, and they didn't admit it was a joke until the next day. lots of interesting stuff here

first: a few of us are discussing on feedback whether this was an April Fool's Prank. Make no mistake about it... all of us believed it to be but we had to admit believing and knowing are two different things. Silverlode, you seem to be all but admitting it is a prank. :-)

Why did it matter? Because other sites are reporting it as news. Now, if it was a TORn prank, then the only place they would get this news is from TORn's home page. That means two things;
  • Some people will report anything as fact with no other verification than 'they read it someplace else'
  • Most of those sites are not crediting TORn and they *had* to get it from TORn.
As one of the 'historians' of the site (not an official title!), I'll be monitoring those sites to see what happens if/when TORn verifies this as a prank.

Probably not many of the readers of The Hobbit board know that there's a slowly moving project to document the history of TORn. The work is being compiled in a wiki format and April Fool's pranks happens to be one of the few articles that is actually in decent condition. (It can be expanded but it's tidy. You should see the work in progress pages!)

You can see the article here:
http://mathom-house.net/...ain/AprilFoolsPranks

The quote at the top of the page is from last year's prank:
"TheOneRing.net has a long tradition of convincing and slightly irritating April Fool pranks."
Celeborn, TORn Staffer, April 1, 2010

ha.. that's right. This year's drama is nothing compared to last year's. And I think there were actually two pranks that had to be pulled down due to protest from people that mattered. But that was before my time. I just dug through the dusty archives looking for clues and imprints of pages now gone.

Completely OT here

This reminds me of a blurb I saw today where Miley Cyrus was complaining about Justin Bieber's easy road to fame. Something along the lines of "it should be harder to become an artist than just posting videos on YouTube." Hello kettle? This is pot...

Taking all you have to say about ST in, it does seem he has had more than a fair share of opportunities. Maybe it's him? The last movie I really noticed him in was Queen of the Damned (if you think Stuart had it bad, look what happend to Aaliyah). I guess he was in Aeon Flux too but all I remember of that movie is Marton Csokas (Celeborn) and Charlize Theron (coincidence?).

I'm probably not following this sub thread completely

I dip in and out of conversations and it's sometimes hard to back track to see what all leads up to a post.

But... it seems like the discussion is: some sites took TORn's April Fools' prank as fact and reported it as news.

If I type >> Stuart Townsend Hobbit << into google news, I get this page.

At the moment, there are two hits. The first one has the headline: "Saoirse Ronan & Stuart Townsend land roles in Middle-Earth" and the top link leads to Monsters and Critics. But under the synopis are three more links (Filmonic, Movies.ie, and TORn) a link that says, "all 5 news articles"

Clicking on the "all 5 news articles" link leads you to this page. This has the four pages shown on the first google news search results page and an additional one that leads to The Hobbit in 5, also here at TORn. CORRECTION: I made an assumption from what I found last night and didn't read the results page. Last night, Google news provided the original prank article and Hobbit in 5. Today the two TORn links are just the original prank article and one posted since then about Ronan. It does not include the Hobbit in 5 article.

Last night, there were 7 hits on this page but two links lead to 'dead' pages which indicates that two other sites also had this on their 'news' page but pulled them down (after being gathered by google news) once they suspected it was an April Fool's Joke.

I also did a Google general search for the same words and set the search parameters to show only the last 24 hours. That gave me more pages as results, but most of them were from forums or comments on an article. (so, otherwise... fans were talking about the Prank article but it wasn't being reported there as an actual news article by the site itself).

I've been following this for various reasons illuminated in this thread and on Feedback. I hope I've provided what you seek. If not, and you'd like me to take another stab at it, perhaps bringing me up to speed on exactly what you're seeking would help me do that.

Or perhaps I'm so off the mark that I'm not being useful all all. :-)

I figure that if you fell for an April Fool's joke, you should be big enough to not hide your gullibility but 'fess up to it with good grace - for example, news sites keeping the stories they ran with a note that 'Yep, we were fooled!'

I laughed out loud, because I took it as a joke on/for the community here, especially those of us who were here in 1999 and spent no little amount of time debating whether Stuart was too young/too short for the role (I was one of those who was upset at the casting and glad when he was removed & replaced with Viggo).

For that reason it would have been even funnier, but subtler, if they'd announced that Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman would play roles . . .

I'm really glad that this DID turn out to be an April Fool's joke.

There would have been A LOT of angry fans where Itaril is concerned, but to be honest Mr. Townsend is probably owed a role in this movie!

Aeon Flux

Quote
I guess he was in Aeon Flux too but all I remember of that movie is Marton Csokas (Celeborn) and Charlize Theron (coincidence?).

I couldn't remember him being in that movie either. Last night I wanted a video to watch and I just don't own a lot of videos. Aeon Flux is one I do.. I bought it cheap because I was interested in the design of it. I watched and thought I spotted him at the beginning but never saw him after that. I just checked imdb and he is listed but as 'uncredited Monican'.

I'm certain he is the Monican who slips Aeon the pill at the beginning. He is only onscreen for less than a minute and the shot of him isn't great. So, I don't think your not remembering him has anything to do with his talent or lack thereof of it. :-)

What should have been a tip-off...

...even before seeing the clue at the bottom of the entry was that Saoirse Ronan's name was misspelled throughout the article.

Townsend is what? 39 now? He isn't too young to play Bard, but he might be too pretty. Then again, I could say the same of the rumored Mr. Fassbender.

Correction: Michael Fassbender just turned 34; that is a bit younger than I would consider for casting Bard (who I see as somewhere between 40 and 50 years old).

I had seen him as one of the dwarves awhile back...

Haven't really seen him in anything other than Braveheart... he was good in that.

I'm still rooting for Fassbender.

Checked the db too

that must be it, yes Magpie. While over there I noticed that of the handful of movies he's been in since 2000 many were with Charlize. One was called Head in the Clouds in which he was the male lead, but I had never heard of it.

I hate to say it because in some areas of life this applies to many of us as well, but maybe his time has passed? He kind of splashed on the scene during the goth/vampire (Anne Rice?) craze of the late 90s. Even without leaving LOTR he may have been in the twilight (ouch) of his career? Of course the loss of the role, especially after the films did so well, may have really messed with his mind. If so, he has my sympathy.

Fassbender is perfect for the role....

I actually thought he was 40 or something alike.. for me he looks older than he is.....
at least on 300 or Inglorious bastards he looks like.....
so I wouldn't have any problem with him portraying Bard.... he's an excellent actor....!..... and handsome too! Blush

I think Stuart Townsend should be in The Hobbit

I don't think he would be good choice to play Bard but I'm sure he would make awesome elf.

I am not impressed with Mr. Townsend's acting.

I think it would be good if he were not involved with the Hobbit.

Who would want to work with someone who said this about you?

Townsend from EW April, 2002:
"I had been having a rough time with them, so I was almost relieved to be leaving until they told me I wouldn't be paid. I have no good feelings for those people in charge, I really don't."

I know it's reading between the lines...

...but it sounded to me like Jackson and Townsend had major problems. Later PJ had to be careful not to say anything that could hurt Townsend's career, lest he face a lawsuit. So they used the story of Townsend being too young for the role, as if that just occurred to them. But it is an obvious difference between the two, since Mortenson is 14 years older than Townsend, so it sounded credible. Townsend getting fired from Thor just before shooting with the notoriously actor-friendly Kenneth Brannaugh directing won't help his rep any.

reading between the lines

I think a lot hasn't been said from the filmmakers' side as well. Interestingly, I ran into this comment while researching some of the bit roles in the LOTR movies.

Xander Forterie is a Dutch makeup artist and sculptor who worked on the make up and prosthetics Orcs and for Dwarves and played a Dwarf in the prologue. Additionally he sculpted a bust of that same Dwarf for Weta.

In an interview he said
(Google translation from the original Dutch)
Work on a large film set was a bit of getting used to. Forterie "it went on far more professional than we were before accustomed to working in the Netherlands. Aragorn, for example, originally played by another actor but he was misbehaving on the set. He was immediately thrown out and Viggo Mortensen took his place. They were quite severe. "

(original in case anyone in the know wants to correct the translation)

I think it's the only comment I've read on the matter that wasn't the official line or from Townsend himself.

That doesn't surprise me.

Just PJ's unwillingness to go further and praise Townsend's efforts, the way he did so many of the actors, made me think there was no love lost there. But whether he's avoiding a lawsuit or just didn't want bad press surrounding his movie, he's taken the high road by not trash talking. Townsend should probably have done the same. Every actor who isn't already name above the title (and even those guys, really) should be worried that good directors will want to work with him without worrying about prima donnas.

Who'd want to work with someone who talks publicly like this about anyone?

I felt sorry for Mr. Townsend when this thread began. Not so much the more I learn about him. Looks like he has personality issues that would make it very difficult to have him in a working environment. Anybody who's worked with someone difficult(and who hasn't?) knows how poisonous that can be to morale, and we know how big a part good cameraderie played in the filming of LOTR. He may still deserve some sympathy--he must be a very difficult person to be--but he doesn't deserve a part in TH. And if he ever had a chance, he pretty much eliminated them with that comment.

We are plain quiet folk and have no use for adventures. Nasty disturbing uncomfortable things! Make you late for dinner!
