Orlando Bloom: In or Out of The Hobbit?

Mona2505 sends this in: Seems that Orlando Bloom is in fact still in talks concerning the hobbit. Came across an interview today, where he refuses to comment on the Hobbit as he is not allowed to. You can find the original interview here. I happened to come across a translation of that interview here, just in case you don't speak Spanish.

"...and his return to the Elvish world" The Hobbit "movie about he does not say a word. "They do not allow me", he explains."

To its 34 years, Bloom still expands its quality of youthful idol and prepares two papers already to devastate: the one of Duke of Buckingham in the new version of “the three mosqueteros” -” a different personage, who does not get to be villain but he is like a great boy”, says and his return to the élfico world in “The Hobbit”, film of which does not say nor word. “They do not leave me”, is justified.

well...

Meh... I guess the impact this has depends on how Peter, Fran, and Phillipa wrote him in to the story. He's not really an integral part in the book, but that doesn't mean diddly for the script.

I'd like to see Orlando return I guess, but I'd rather see John Rhys-Davies. Too bad he doesn't want to do it. I hope they at least let him come down and give the dwarves some lessons in being dwarfish. I heard he had volunteered for that and never heard back from Peter's camp. Does anyone know if John is part of this production or not?

To be honest...

I wouldn't miss JRD any more than I'd miss Orlando, since Gimli's contribution to "dwarvishness" seemed to consist mostly of gas and bad jokes. Pirate

He said "no comment"...

He's not allowed to talk about the role, so I guess he's in;)
Several news-sites have stated he's in for some time now, and I see no reason why eh shouldn't be in the film if both he and Jackson wants to (which seems to be the case)

I don't think it's unusual

If he were to say he'll be in The Hobbit for sure before the contracts have all been signed then either he or the studio would be in big trouble with the fans/press if the deal fell through. It could give Orlando some leverage in any negotiating that's happening and I suspect the studios want to avoid that at all costs. I don't think it's unusual for actors to be signed to confidentiality agreements during negotiations, but perhaps someone has more knowledge than I do.

We don't know who Itaril is yet.

There was quite a furor over the invented character of Morwen when they were filming LOTR, and that turned out to be a tempest in a teapot.

I'm still plumping for her being Lego's kid sister and Lego gets sent to the BOFA because sending him to his room for teasing his sister is having no effect. Cool

Morwen

wow never heard there was such a rumor.I can imagine Tolkien fans were furious and confused.

I wouldn't mind to see some relatives of Legolas even if they would be made up.
But I don't think Itaril will be Thranduils' daughter. She is supposed to be his guard if the casting call was true.

About Morwen -

you do realize that she in fact is in The Two Towers, don't you? She is the woman who puts her two children on a horse when that village in Rohan gets burned down.

The point, as I take it, was to say: If Itaril in fact turns out to be an invented character like Morwen, that could be a good thing. Morwen was created to give the people of Rohan a personal face that the audience could relate to. In The Hobbit there are many scenes in which "an elf" talks or in which "the elves" act as a group. It might be very sensible to create a character that is part of the group but has a personality that we can understand.

Personally, I am convinced that Bloom has long signed but is not allowed to talk about his role - because they don't want to give anything away about the structure of the scripts yet.

I think that it is more likely that no deal has been reached yet

My guess is that, like with Sir Ian Holm, there have been discussions but no final deal signed, which is why he can't even confirm that he is in the film(s). That was even the case for quite a while with the other Sir Ian.

I think you're right

Which would suggest that any role he'd have isn't all that large. I would think that any major role would have to have been confirmed during the scripting process.

Or am I grasping at straws again? Cool

That makes sense to me

I think it is pretty clear that no one other than Bloom is going to play Legolas. Either he will play the role or the role won't exist. It is not like Bard or Thranduil, which are likely to be more major roles, but which could be played by a lot of different actors. The fact that they have not been announced doesn't suggest that the roles are small, or potentially eliminated. But the fact that Bloom has not been confirmed does suggest to me that Legolas' role is small.

Or maybe I'm grasping at straws, too. But at least we would be doing so together. Smile

...this almost certainly means he'll be in the film in some respect. Otherwise he would have said, "Nope". I think it's supposed to be a surprise, with a lot of these returning actors anyways, maybe not Hugo Weaving, but the rest of them.

Orlando in or out

I don't think it means Orlando's necessarily in, just because he is not allowed to talk about it. It could be simply that they have not yet decided, and do not want to raise people's hopes/make them angry for nothing.

I hope he's not added in, because it would require some sort of fake side-plot that we do not need to be added. Too often, when new stuff is added, the good original bits are thrown by the wayside...

But we'll see. :)

By all rights Legolas would have been residing at the Woodland Realm

at the time Thorin & Company were held there, so his presence would be acceptable and not be a "fake side-plot". However, as I said earlier, If they make him central to the plot in any really significant way they will be treading close to the edge.

I would think that the only way PJ would include the character would be if Orly agrees to play the part.

I was just watching a little of Cherie last night, and it occured to me then

that Rupert is very like Orlando. Great minds think alike, Sir D. And I still agree--if Orli doesn't want to do it, then he should be left out altogether. Although already, for me, this would be a disappointment. I'm not a fanGirl (I'm far too old to be THAT!) but I think that he should have a cameo at Mirwood in his dad's home, and at the BoFA. Short, but sweet.

Lego's cameo

I know Legolas would justifiably be there, but what I fear is that, if Orlando was included, they would feel the need to give him a part, rather than just panning a camera over him. If they took the time to make an extra scene(s) to include him, that would be aggravating.
