They were banking on the Jim Carrey vehicle The Number 23 to be a success...and, of course, The Last Mimzy. The Golden Compass has its own built-in audience--and it could be a great film--but I can't picture it turning into a big crossover hit like LOTR proved to be. Maybe Shaye knows they need a successful Hobbit in the pipeline (even if the movies can't come out until 2009 or 2010)? Maybe Shaye knows he overreacted over the last couple of years about Jackson? I hope they do start to talk - I'd really like to see Little Children and Hairspray, and, of course, The Golden Compass (which looks phenomenal). grammaboodawg Immortal Jul 12 2007, 11:10pm Views: 399 I've always had hope even for NL to be a part of Peter Jackson's adaptation of The Hobbit and its sequel... but I have to admit Mr. Shaye has Shattered any faith I had in him. He's scrambling here. "I don't like to have issues with anybody. Any issues with Mr. Jackson, I would prefer to have them closed, rather than open." Well, duh... he's the one that SLAMMED the door shut on Mr. Jackson and Wingnut... which I thought was pretty "closed", on his part. The faith I have is in Peter and his people continuing to be very savvy and professional on how they're approaching the whole thing. There are other people in New Line besides Shaye (who is on his way out next year, IIRC and scrambling for redemption/marketability?), and I'm sure they aren't in agreement with how Shaye's behaved. Funny how Shaye's tune May be changing now that Mr. Spielberg has joined up with Peter on some projects and that MGM is behind him. The Hobbit will be made by Jackson. It's just a mater of time (2009, I hope!) Thanks for this, Patty. It's interesting and very comforting to know things are still going on behind the scenes (not surprisingly ;) Trust him... They're sort of ridiculous, of course, but I have a soft spot for old-timey paperback art from that period. But you know, I think it would restore a lot of the good will surrounding this movie if New Line (Shaye) would publicly put a face on this scene that shows that it's the FANS who matter, and let us all get back to our celebrations together with them as before. They were a big part of the enjoyment of these films, and New Line's actions have tarnished the glow of the whole experience. Riding with the Rohirrim! LOTR & Potter had legitimate built in audiences but beyond that . . . I just don't know if many things are loved by enough people to have the built-in audience matter. Mostly I think main stream pop-culture makes movies popular, not audiences transfered from another medium. Of course Hollywood thinks otherwise since they base seemingly everything on built-in audiences and marketing. I need a government grant so I can study "built-in" audiences and box office success. No wonder all writers want to direct: one still has to put up with a load of nonsense, but even if wearing two hats (writer and director), there is one under which one is not called a thief and then raped - David Mamet

Patty Immortal Jul 12 2007, 11:31pm Views: 376 Well, certainly movies that are heavily front-loaded because they have a built in audience (read in this from books or from good hype) make a lot of money to begin with. It's the movie itself that determines "legs", which extend from word of mouth. I think the 3rd Pirates is a case in point. I really expected it to do better than the 2nd, because the domino effect from one, and to a certain extent the 2nd film set in. But word got out that the plot was "iffy", and it's not paying off as hoped. I'll give you the grant, MrCere! If you can roll all these pennies I've saved. Riding with the Rohirrim! JRandomRohirrim Rohan Jul 13 2007, 2:32pm Views: 100 Again, I think it comes down to money Boycott or not (and I think it has more to do with their mostly lousy output over the last two years), New Line isn't a huge money maker these days. Especially if Hairspray tanks, Shaye might want at least one guaranteed money-maker that he can point to. While I expect Golden Compass to do pretty well (unless the religious fanatics call for a boycott of that), The Hobbit, particularly if Jackson directs, will be a money-maker. Or maybe they'll arrive at a compromise where Jackson produces but doesn't direct. It'll be itneresting to see. Boycott New Line! http://www.boycottnewline.com

fmaximus Rivendell Jul 13 2007, 10:42pm Views: 92 The pressure... is more on New Line than on PJ, thats for sure. PJ will be ok since he has plenty of projects on the go. His involvement with the likes of Spielberg, James Cameron and Microsoft only affirms his credibility in the movie industry.
