I always have trouble answering "Where are you from" questions because I grew up in Ohio, and still consider it home, but for the last 20+ years I have lived in Chicago. But for anyone outside the US, I am "from" the US.

I'm from Canada... you know, "America's hat". I'll assume you meant both North America and South America by simply, "America" and try not to flail indignantly... or at least not too hard.

that a country and two continents share a name. Pretty confusing in a poll like this! And to add to the confusion, the people in Mexico call people from the US and Canada "norteamericanos', even though Mexico is in North America too.

good for you

I get touchy about it too and I'm from the US. I think it's lazy and inconsiderate and probably egotistical (for those in the US that indulge) to want to use 'America' as the name for 'US'. I can see the difficulty with the adjective since you can't concoct anything useful to substitute for the word 'American' by starting with United States. And many times, we know what someone means. If a politician here talks about the 'American Spirit', we get it. They mean, The Spirit of the USA'

But when someone says, "How is American English different than British English", one has to ask: 'how are you using the word American?' because the answer is different depending on if they really mean US or they truly mean 'American' and all that encompasses. What's worse is, when you ask them for clarification, they get all huffy and say 'You know what I mean".

I tried to teach my kids from an early age that this:

is a US flag... not an American flag. No matter how much my mother-in-law tried to poo poo that distinction. :-)

I'm surprised by the number

of people here who reside in or come from the Great Lakes region of NA (especially Michigan).

As for World Wide distribution? There is the time shift (which greatly affects FF), but also usage patterns to consider. Some people check in less frequently than others, some are disinclined to participate in "polls," and so on. It may be linked to Internet coverage in some regions, population, and per capita usage. Learn more here: http://computer.howstuffworks.com/...-world.htm/printable

Language and literacy rates (as this is a text based English language site) might be a determining factor though that does't explain why there seems to be more people here from the US than from the British Isles.

As for your theory of internet coverage, most European countries has as good internet coverage as USA or better.

Also as for top countries ranked by speed, US comes low in this list (33th place):

So I don't think that explains anything really of why it is as it is, but I dont have an answer myself Laugh

I was speaking of how one might explain distribution in general.

I thought that the question "why are there less citizens of Tolkien's own country here than people from the US?" might be implied in your post. Since I had no idea how to address that question, I tried to highlight some of the things a person would have to look at when trying to answer your question as stated. I deliberately left out what might best be described as cultural differences and a population's relationship to media (or more specifically the entertainment industry) since I thought that might lead to a more esoteric conversation than I believe you were looking for.

It is true the US has lagged behind countries such as Canada, and some regions of Europe (such as Scandinavia) in development of Internet infrastructure. Scandinavian countries have, in fact, on a per capita basis, lead the world in the shift to becoming wired societies. Factors such as different priorities for social spending, relative land mass, and population all come into play in such contests.

Speaking specifically now to your original observation: though the US is less "wired" than the UK (and many other European countries) the total number of Internet users in the US is higher, to the tune of almost 5 to 1. Here is a breakdown of Internet use by country for your reference.

On a side note: Though not accounting for the difference you were wondering about, language does play a role in all of this. For instance, the ease of causing offence where none was intended.

Population

I would say. The USA has a pop of about 310mil whilst the UK has about 60mil. If the same percentage of people in each country are teh type of people who would post on a Tolkien message board then you could assume there would be about 5 times as many from the US than from the UK

Blew my knee out playing football in high school. That pretty much put an end to my interest in sports in general. Soccer's not bad...

You are right about hockey being huge around here though. I've often wondered why Kingston doesn't have a National League team. The Frontenacs seem to have no problem packing 'em in.

It's a whole 'nother country.

I'm in central Texas.

I once had one of those maps that showed the true size of Texas. El Paso was on the Pacific Ocean, the Panhandle was up near the north pole, and East Texas was over by New York. The southern tip of Texas was down by the Panama Canal. All the other states and countries were just jammed in around Texas. Laugh

And suddenly the Tornadoes saw afar off a greenlight, as it were a cloud with a living heart of flame;
and they knew that this was no vision only, but that PJ had made a new thing: The Hobbit, the Film that Is.

Geez...

those knees eh? Always the knees! Mine are in rough shape from years of hockey mostly, throw in some rugby, soccer and swimming and I get bad knees before I"m forty. Along with a bad back, ankles and hips. All those areas that get jarred the most from body contact.

As for Kingston, yeah its a hockey hotbed for sure. The only thing keeping that team from getting a pro franchise is the population. Being right in the middle of Ottawa and Toronto it would logically make a good spot for another franchise. The Frontenacs have some great history. And Doug Gilmour coaching them the last two years must be great for publicity! Home town boy comes back to coach the local franchise!
One year I was working in Oshawa, and my dad was working/living in Kinsgton. Same company just different offices, anyway, both offices went in on a sponosorship deal with the local teams, us with the Oshawa Generals and the other office with the Frontenacs. Part of the deal was each office got seasons tickets to their respective teams. I was really the only big hockey fan in our office so I got to see most of the Generals games that year, especially those games against the Frontenacs. At the end of the season, the 'boss' of the office whose team had fewer points had to wear the 'other' teams jersey for a day. I believe my boss had to wear the Frontenacs jersey that year.
I have a cottage just north of Kingston, up Division St., so I spend many weekends duirng the summer out that way. Great area. Kingston is one of my favourite towns.

I can think of a few reasons

for there being fewer Brits anwering this poll. The smaller population size has been mentioned, which is probably the biggest reason of all. (Internet connectivity wouldn't be one, according to SirDennis' graph, which shows a higher percentage of internet usage in the UK than in the US.)

But I can also think of a couple of psychological reasons for the lack of British respondents. One is that many Brits might find the vigorous debating style on these boards a bit "alien" and off-putting - I doubt I'd have ever started to post if I hadn't already become comfortable with the North American style from my many years living in Canada. Even now I feel too shy (or private, or something) to join in with things like Fiesta Friday.

And the other reason is that Brits have to answer "Europe" in this poll. That's just so not how Brits classify themselves!

Cool

They went in, and Sam shut the door.
But even as he did so, he heard suddenly,
deep and unstilled,
the sigh and murmur of the Sea upon the shores of Middle-earth.

Interesting thoughts - I share your view on some of your thoughts like Fiesta Friday. For me it was pretty natural to start posting as most forums are structured approximately in the same way as this (in a very good way, of course) Cool

I move around a lot but

i try to be in Mundus Imaginalis, but i find that where ever i am, i'm in Axis Mundi.

But those around these here parts call it joisey, north joisey to be exact.

''Sam put his ragged orc-cloak under his master's head, and covered them both with the grey robe of Lorien; and as he did so his thoughts went out to that fair land, and to the Elves, and he hoped that the cloth woven by their hands might have some virtue to keep them hidden beyond all hope in this wilderness of fear...But their luck held, and for the rest of that day they met no living or moving thing; and when night fell they vanished into the darkess of Mordor.'' - - -rotk, chapter III

May the grace of Manwë let us soar with eagle's wings!

In the air, among the clouds in the sky
Here is where the birds of Manwe fly
Looking at the land, and the water that flows
The true beauty of earth shows
With the stars of Varda lighting my way
In all the realms this is where I stay
In the realm of Manwë Súlimo

Still none from Africa.

Though I remember reading posts from someone from some Western African country.... can't remember whether it was here on ToRn or somewhere else - she was bragging that she believed to be the only one in Western Africa with a copy of HoME. Blush

in effect, it's strange that...

...there're not africans; maybe (but it's difficult to believe) someone doesn't remember that JRRT was born in Bloemfontaine (South Africa) even if he moved to UK very quickly

also there are few Kiwis (those linked to our ME) and less Asians (cinema is not very diffuse in that continent, maybe the books too, I don't know exactly...)

and I am the only italian here, or so it seems Tongue

I consider myself a global citizen, but...

...if you want to get specific, I'm San Franciscan, born and raised. It would be difficult to take the California out of me. I have lived in different states in the United States, (Ohio, Texas, North Carolina) and it's true that some states are so different from each other, it's like visiting another country. I have also briefly lived in The Netherlands.

My grandfather was British, so sometimes we use words or phrases in my family that are British and we sound weird to other Americans. I had to explain to a kid I know that my mom wasn't British (and my mom really doesn't sound that British) and was actually born here in California. It was kinda cute. Wink

Me too!

I feel a mini-moot coming on :D I'm in the middle-o-the-mit!

I want to live in NZ, too. Michigan in the summer (Apr-Nov)... Wellington in the winter (Nov-Apr)

I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.

You're just trying to

avoid the winter and (most of) the snow Wink

..The land of long-forgotten name:
......no man may ever anchor near;
..No steering star his hope may aim,
......for nether Night its marches drear,
..And waters wide no sail may tame,
......with shores encircled dark and sheer.

..O! Haven where my heart would be!
......the waves beat upon thy bar
..For ever echo endlessly,
......when longing leads thy thought afar

who loves winter?

maybe the children 4 X'mas, maybe the skiers/snowboardists, maybe who hates summer
I love summer, spring too and autumn a bit less, now 4 example I'm here typing with cold hands and we are in March!!!
I'll never leave my country (Italy) 4 any reason, but to be honest I'd like to live in equatorian states where clima is perfect 4 my personal taste...

Hi
This is my first post, so be gentle. I live in Glasgow, Scotland and I'd like to set-up a beer-drinking/LOTR discussion club for fellow Glaswegians and visitors to the dear green place (Glasgow). Email me if you agree.

Welcome to TORn, divergordon!

I wholeheartedly agree. Sadly, I live in Colorado. Laugh

You should start a thread about this in the TORn Moots & Other Events forum. Tell people to post in the thread or PM you if they're interested.

Good luck with it, welcome again, and may your pint glass never run dry! WinkSmile
