Dominion's Coverage of Hobbit Press Conference

10.19am: A written statement from Jackson said he regretted not being able to attend but was effectively under a health version of "house arrest".

10.18am: Spooks star Richard Armitage, who plays one of the dwarves, is seated to Freeman's left.

10.15am: The stars, including British actor Martin Freeman and Irishman James Nesbitt, have taken their seats at a long table at the Stone Street Studios in Mirimar, Wellington. Freeman, who will play Bilbo Baggins, is seated right in the middle.

They changed the picture in the article

The new photo features all fourteen of them (Armitage is hidden behind Brown, though).

Despite the anti-climactic conference, that picture put a smile on my face.

That Aidan Turner and Rob Kazinsky are front and center behind Martin Freeman, and Richard Armitage is in the back, hidden by Adam Brown.

A snippet from Martin Freeman...

Just heard this on Newstalk ZB: Martin was asked about the 'bad luck' that had plagued the production so far, to which he replied, "There have been bits of bad luck around it, but we're all ready to go ... as soon as 2015 rolls around..."

:D

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

That's a fantastic picture!!

Wow! It's so cool to finally see Bilbo and the 13 dwarves together in a photograph!

Everyone just looks awesome, even without costumes and makeup.

Very stoked for this!

Also, seeing just how formidably numerous 13 dwarves actually looks in real-life, I'm extremely curious to know just how they're going to distinguish one from another! More than anything, though, the necessity of two films is brought home to me. If the writing is up to par with these actors, I've a feeling the dwarves are going to steal the show (and I say that as a total Freeman fanboy)!

Beard versus clean-shaven Idea: latex allergies

So, first of all Bilbo doesn't have a beard. No worries on shaven-ness, MF!

What about the mix of beard/non-beard in the dwarvish crew?

Perhaps they are wearing them to get into character, like Viggo lugged around the sword for ages, repaired his own costume etc.

However wouldn't they all be doing that then?

I don't think these are just fashion statements, I think those with allergies to beard glue might be growing beards so that they can get "beard extensions" (hair extensions) easily on, the others will have theirs prosthetically attached like JRD- Gimli.

Just a thought.

(big fan of beards btw- these are great!)

It could also be....

that the wardrobe/makeup departments want to know what their natural beards look like so that they can make authentic-looking fake ones for filming. I doubt that they'll be wearing their own beards for the same reason they won't be wearing their own hair: continuity in makeup and hairdressing is much much easier with wigs and false beards that can be taken off and tended to elsewhere. Also, fake hair doesn't grow, so haircuts don't create an issue.

Thanks for reposting, Altaira

Like I said in the other thread, I am loving the vibe I am getting from this group.

They each have their own distinctive look, voice, personality. And they also have their own unique quirks and sense of humor. But most important, they all share a great collaborative energy. It's fantastic to finally see them all interacting together.

As far as Armitage/Thorin is concerned, I admit that I am still skeptical. Considering Thorin is the oldest dwarf in the company, I find it odd that PJ cast an actor who is the fourth youngest in the group of dwarf actors. I'm sincerely hoping that PJ did not purposefully change the character's age. Not only because it's a completely unnecessary change, but also because it takes something away from the chararacter.

It may just be me, but making Thorin substantially younger doesn't have the same impact as seeing an aged dwarf who spent most of his life living in bitter exile - but forever holding onto the desperate hope of reclaiming what is rightfully his.

But in this press conference, Armitage demonstrates a deep and authoritative voice - which is ideal for Thorin. I am hopeful that this voice (in combination with the prosthetics, wig, and beard) will make Armitage seem much older than he really is.

Overall, this press conference was extremely comforting.

Prosthetics may not play

as big a role as they did in the creation of Gimli. I can see how this group could look like dwarfs with just a bit of hair and makeup. Not to mention RA's nose is majestic as is... As for him not looking old enough, well, as their king, might he not have more refined features, a more youthful visage than the others, in spite of his years? I'm quite smitten by him already.

I agree this initial peek at the ensemble was comforting. Some in the group might be replaced easily, or at best are interchangeable. But others, for me, are already gelling as the characters they will play.

So surreal...

My oh my. Having missed the production phase of the LotR films (I finished the books in time for the second and third FotR trailers), this is leaving me so giddy. Laugh I truly never thought - after the experience of seeing the original trilogy and the experiencing the emotion of that 3 year journey - that I would actually get to go "back again". It is incredibly special to me to get to experience these films from the very beginning of their creation. Just getting to see these actors as they prepare to embark on this journey is quite exciting. On a personal note, it doesn't hurt that this will be coinciding with my own journey into film (I'll hopefully be attending film school this fall). Even with the perspective that I'm simply a spectator in all this, I can't help but feel that this is going to be a magnificent couple of years.

"All men dream; but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds awake to find that it was vanity; But the dreamers of day are dangerous men. That they may act their dreams with open eyes to make it possible."

Marvelous.

It's great to see that once again, PJ and Co. have chosen not just good actors who will fit the parts, but actors who will work well together. We may not have gotten a lot of "news", but it was a delight to see the group interacting. I can't wait to see them all on screen!

As an early member of the Martin Freeman bandwagon, I am thrilled to see him actually sitting there as a hobbit among dwarves. I'm certain he's going to be brilliant. Cool

The Hobbit & Dwarves have spoken

Just finished viewing the press conference, and i have to say it is a relief to finally get to see and hear a number of
principle cast. But still this was more of a introduction of the actors, and i would have liked to hear from Sir Peter Jackson,
but understandably he was not present, also like someone has mentioned before it would have been nice to see Sir Ian Mckellan
in attendance, any one know when he will be in New Zealand.

I don't know what people are complaining about

What's the big deal with their being no more casting announcements- is that the only thing that could come out of that press conference? Personally i found it enlightening even if it wasn't informative- you got a sense of the dynamic, of the character of the actors involved both individually and as a group- i never knew Graham McTavish was quite so giggly, and this was the first time i had actually seen a lot of the New Zealand actors move and react, as well as hear them (though i'm imagining that the antipodean tones will be re-tuned to be a bit more traditionally British of some variety or another).

Adam Brown intrigues me too, since he's one of the youngest cast members, and possibly the least known. What is cool about him is how he does look rather like a young Jed Brophy, so you can imagine how these different families and groupings are going to emerge. I'm becoming more comfortable with the younger cast members generally, but Armitage's age does still worry me, particularly if it means the character is going to be younger too (incidentally, where's the clip of him speaking in the press conference? I can't find it). I could have done with hearing a bit more from him, just to get a sense of what to expect and possibly even his response to the questions about his casting (it's alright PJ saying he's brilliant, but i want something solid to go on). Granted he's apparently a method actor so obviously he's trying to retain that distance, build up the persona, but still- it was a press conference so speak up Dickie! I would prefer a recasting but i am softening to Armitage, my mind is ajar for him to prove himself. He's got a striking resemblance to Gerard Butler in 300 there though with the full beard.

I'm still not keen on this idea of skimping on the prosthetics with the dwarves. They're welcome to try and introduce some of the actors' unique features into the sculpted appliances, but cutting back on the appliances will make for a stylistically unwelcome shift from the established dwarf look. Their heads still need to be larger in ratio to their bodies than humans in order to look dwarf-like.

But yes, i'm really excited by this clip- it's all kind of 'coming real' and that's really a rather amazing thing.

Having watched the full conference now...

...I humbly must take back some of my harsh words said last night. The conference may have not been at all what most of us hoped for but calling it an anticlimax wasn't fair either. Even though those big, burning questions concerning the production still remain unanswered, getting to witness the fantastic synergy of the 1+13 was indeed truly inspiring. It added much needed credence and tangibility to the project.

Hence I endorse your words Owain: we are in for the experience that we have all been waiting for!

It was hard for me to hear too.

So I normalized the audio to bring it out a bit more without getting blasted. It's uploading on youtube right now, so it might be worth another listen. I guess it depends on how acute your hearing is. Once done I'll post the link. -about 25 minutes to go

Thanks for the links...

It's all coming together, isn't it?

I really enjoyed watching and listening to all that - it's so good to see the actors together, and building up a kind of chemistry between them. Makes you realise what a big group of people 13 + 1 is - it was a smart move, I think, to make the thing exclusively Bilbo and dwarves and not introduce any other actors at this stage.

And singing too! It's all good! Cool

yes yes yes!

Love Dwalin's beard! (McTavish)

Gloín is a good match to be Gimli's dad. Armitage as Thorin is good too.

Not so sure about Ken Stott- I see him and think "REBUS" right away. He doesn't match my idea of Balin so well. Like to see a beard on him, his eyes are good though for a watch man/dwarf.

Also, I have been pronouncing it as "Bay-lin" and "Dway-lin" since the first time I read them, and was surprised to hear "Bah-lin" and "Dwah-lin" Anyone else? anyone got definitive pronunciation?

Actually, sod cynicism, this is THE HOBBIT!

So i've just seen the full press conference, and while my previous message was characteristically cynical and level-headed, i'd just like to take this moment to do a digital happy dance, because this thing is happening, it's happening and it's happening! These are great people, it's a great project and it'll hopefully produce a great result!

It’s quite definitely supposed to be [ˈbɑːlɨn] and [ˈdwɑːlɨn], not [ˈbeɪlən] and [ˈdweɪlən]!

It sounded like she got all the other dwarves’ names pretty close correct, too, including even using [ɾ] instead of [ɹ] for Ori, Dori, and Nori, and using a two‐syllable hiatus instead of a one‐syllable diphthong in Óin and Glóin. That was all nice to hear.

She did botch the final r in Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur, but that’s just her own non-rhotic accent punching through. It should be [ˈbɔːmbɚ] — which is sometimes written [ˈbɔmbəɹ] — but certainly not [ˈbɒmbə] the way she said it with no r whatsoever. So it’s not correct, but I imagine they’ll fix it up for the production in any Kiwis whose twang they decide needs taming. She’s also a victim of the cot–caught merger, as I’ve indicated above in the first syllable of Bombur.

Like Tolkien himself and also John Rhys‐Davies’ portrayal of Gimli, the two Scots should both be native rhotic speakers, which will work out well for them. I think James Nesbitt is too; not sure on Aidan Turner. The Englishmen and Kiwis are not native rhotic speakers, however, so they may have to fix that up during dialect coaching.

I figure that just as they did with Merry and Pippin versus Frodo and Sam, they might well try to zero in on a single shared dialect only between each set of Dwarves who are closely related and then let each group vary a bit from each other group. Balin and Dwalin should have no trouble being both Scots, but these are after all actors, so they should be able to handle any required dialect shifts without too terribly much work.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they left Martin Freeman pretty close to RP, which is non‐rhotic, since it will give him a more bourgeois or semi‐posh sound. I seem to recall that Ian McKellen put more r into his Gandalf, having studied and adopted Tolkien’s own (rhotic) accent for the rôle.

Here are the actors’ nationalities:
  • Bilbo:   Martin Freeman        – England
  • Thorin:  Richard Armitage      – England
  • Fíli:    Rob Kazinsky          – England
  • Kíli:    Aidan Turner          – Ireland
  • Balin:   Ken Stott             – Scotland
  • Dwalin:  Graham McTavish       – Scotland
  • Bifur:   William Kircher       – New Zealand
  • Bofur:   James Nesbitt         – Northern Ireland
  • Bombur:  Stephen Hunter        – New Zealand
  • Óin:     John Callen           – New Zealand
  • Glóin:   Peter Hambleton       – New Zealand
  • Ori:     Adam Brown            – England
  • Nori:    Jed Brophy            – New Zealand
  • Dori:    Mark Hadlow           – New Zealand
Interesting that there’s no one from the States, Canada, or Australia. Harder to work the accents, maybe? Or maybe it’s just because those countries don’t end in “‑land”? :)

Richard Armitage

After watching the video of the press conference yesterday I was trying to remember who Armitage reminded me of and it hit me this morning. He reminded me of Bernard Hill's Theoden. He has a kingly presence about him just like Theoden. It seemed to me that he knew he was important and he certainly sounded like it with his deep voice. Good job on casting im sure he is going to do great!

Speaking for myself

(which is the same as the general vibe I'm getting from other people who were complaining)
We were expecting PJ to be there (along with other production people possibly) and so the questions we were hoping for could not be answered (such as about GdT's designs, etc). Then the Dominion Post report was dry and made it sound like all of the questions were pointless (eg: are you prepared to be an instant heartthrob?). However, since Tehanu's report and the video postings, for the most part it seems everyone has realized the spirit of the conference: it wasn't dry and it was a wonderful way to meet the main cast.

Before I only had a knowledge of the names and a vague idea of what they looked like (not that I could ever remember all of the dwarves' actors). Now I'm getting a feel for the personalities behind the actors, which makes it so much more real.

It's great to finally see the cast together

The entire project has suddenly become more tangible. Now we're starting to get a real sense of how the actors and their characters will interact and behave around each other. The chemistry is reassuring indeed. It's a slightly eerie feeling – looking at a group of people, most of whom I've never seen before, and knowing that I will soon be just as familiar with them as I am with the nine actors who portrayed the Fellowship.

Dwarf age?

I hope this isn't too off topic but after reading about Durin's folk, I don't picture Thorin as being "old" - more late middle aged.

My reasoning is that in the Appendices of Return of the King, (Appendix A: III) it states that the average life expectancy of a dwarf is 250 years. Marriageable age is 100 years and they don't become "battle ready" until their early 30's. From this, I would place Thorin at 195, more in "late middle age"; still fit to fight. lead his people, work the hammer and anvil and travel under rough conditions on the quest for Erebor. An "old" dwarf wouldn't have it in him, imo.

Armitage needs to be aged a few years, greyed a bit. He certainly might be viewed as "old for his years" as he has seen tragedy from his years of exile and has had a tough life. Proud, aloof, even arrogant. ("Regal" to quote SiirDennisC above).

It all depends on what a person's perception of "old" is and what that means in dwarf years. I would think 250 is old (a bit like our 3 score years and 10) Smile

Interesting press conference - it was clear a lot of the actors were already starting to inhabit their characters including Armitage. I wonder if he has Orcrist yet? Smile

Yes!

I just finished reading "The Annals of the Kings and Rulers" from the Appendix, and that was exactly my thought.

Thorin was just a "kid" when Smaug attacked the Lonely Mountain, barely in his 20s, which is young even for races with lifespans of less than a century. He was 95 when became king at the time of Thrain's disappearance, and he was 195 when he died.

Dain Ironfoot lived to 252.

Thorin is the oldest dwarf in the company.

He was, by his own account, a "young dwarf" when Smaug descended on Erebor. Thirty-one years later he fought in the Battle of Azanulbizar, where he earned the name Oakenshield, alongside his cousin Dáin, who was thirty-two at the time. He then lived in exile for another 140 years until the quest for Erebor, making him at least 171 plus however old he was at the time of the dragon's attack.

That said, provided he has the capacity to ramble on in a self-important manner, Armitage has a perfect air for Thorin, and I don't care how young he looks. Bring on the make-up department; just leave alone those eyes and nose!

It might help to explain it...

Whether it justifies it is a subjective conclusion and the proof will be in the movie which we won't see for a couple of years yet. But it's an interesting possibility. It's certainly easier to age someone than to make them appear convincingly younger.

It may seem so

But then i only started posting on here in reaction to Richard Armitage being cast and so it may seem like i'm a bit of a 'one policy party', but yes, I am actually hugely hugely excited about this- i'm just trying to make sure the film is as good as it can be.

On matters of Thorin's age- late middle-age is a good analogy. The thing about Thorin, is that much like Bilbo, he's reached an age where he must either fulfill his 'pipe dreams' or live out the rest of his days without achieving them. While Bilbo is on the cusp of going to seed and spending the rest of his days as an eccentric but respectable bachelor and country squire, Thorin is on the cusp of becoming too old to mete out any kind of vengeance on Smaug and reclaim the Lonely Mountain. There's a tragic futility to the character of Thorin. While we see Aragorn say to the kid at Helm's Deep 'There is always hope', Thorin is specifically identified as an heir without hope and so i'm hoping to see a rather melancholic and sympathetic vision of Thorin, resigned to at best a heroic and honourable death, but fearful (and suspicious) that Gandalf has just set him up for a humiliating and ignominious one- there's a great deal of pathos to be drawn from the character, and just as much as his dourness can make him defensive and aggressive, it should also show him as capable of sincere displays of wonderment and happiness- the moment where he recovers the Arkenstone should almost have the same effect on him as when Bilbo sees the ship at the grey havens at the end of LotR- the same wide-eyed wonderment and blissful happiness. It's a kind of scope that i fear someone as young, fit and virile as Richard Armitage won't be able to capture, where someone a bit more world-weary and 'past it' would (my first choice for Thorin was actually Anthony Hopkins) but if he can then he really will have proven himself.

To be exact

Thorin is 195 during the events of The Hobbit. As you said, this makes him the oldest dwarf in the company (followed by Balin).

Having just skimmed the first chapter again, Balin was described as "an old-looking dwarf." So I would assume that Thorin too would look old.

The funny thing is that my comment actually wasn't meant that way as I am not generally prone to drooling (though I do not attempt to deny the appeal of Mr. Armitage and I will keep a bucket of ice water handy over the next few months just in case Wink). Rather, it was posted in a "Hmmm" sort of way. I can think of a number of reasons that they might have wanted to cast Thorin young, but that was one that had not previously occurred to me. It's a way in which the relatively youthful casting might be made to serve the story.

Until recently, I had never considered it possible that dwarves might be heartthrobs, much less be played by them. As much as the purist in me would deplore it, I have a sneaking admiration for PJ that he might actually pull it off and make a crowd of guys playing short, stocky, hairy men into the most eligible bachelors in Hollywood. We would have been half expecting certain types of characters to be cast/portrayed such that they could be heartthrobs. But yeah... never saw it coming with the Dwarves.

And what I like about Richard is really his depiction of characters. I don't know a thing about him other than what I can guess by looking at him (I might be able to come within ten years of his age, for example). But I like the characters he portrays which I have to give him some credit for.

So now, we're getting this real, tangible sense that these Hobbit characters could be portrayed in ways we'll really enjoy. (Or at least I am) And conjuring up past throbbing heart moments with John Thornton doesn't hurt one bit in that growing sense. :-)

I'm a silent member of the club.

So silent nobody knows it. I've never been a public drooler or squee-er.

The comment Dr. Death was referring to is here. I think he's just been so overwhelmed by the newly-formed A-brigade that it's coloring his interpretation of all Armitage-centered comments. He may only just have realized that this is a femine board. Laugh

Actually, though, I was thinking just the other day that it had been a long while since we had a full-blown Estrogen Island around here. My amazing prophetic foresight tells me that it will likely return to its status as a regular tradition sometime in the coming months....

"Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them.
Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you."

I have to say

I had never detected any sense of a squee from you since I've known you and I wouldn't have in that post, either. :-)

It's hard to joke about stuff when people aren't well acquainted and have a good sense of someone's sense of humor. But I am always delightfully amused at another young male poster who kind of keeps asking us 'older' aunties (can't testify to the age of all of us) "just what is so special about this guy". Sometimes, girls just got to giggle. I do believe it raises endorphin levels or something.

I suppose a full blown Estrogen Island might actually scare some of newer members.

Yes, but.......

When Smaug took posession of Erebor, Thorin was only "a youngster in the reckoning of the Dwarves". - 24 years, so if they are going to show the sacking of Erebor, they might choose a younger actor for that scene.

My thoughts are that they might recreate part of the Battle of Azanulbizar where Thorin gets his name of Oakenshield. The Thorin (RA) in the press conference would be just the right age without make up for that battle.

He will need to be aged a bit more for the Quest but that shouldn't be too hard to do, imo. Smile

That is the point...they all ready have chosen a younger actor.

Does anyone think

that rather than tell the coming of Smaug as a flashback, PJ might begin the film wih this, then carry on with the Battle of Azanulbizar, then have the meeting between Thorin and Gandalf all as a continuous process happening within a relatively short amount of time rather than over a period of years and that is why he's chosen an actor to play Thorin who is middle-aged rather than young, as at the beginning of his story, or oldish, towards the end? And can I ask what the purists would think of such a time compression? My thoughts are that, dramatically, it fits better into a film rather than having people imagine that years have gone by.

Great description of Thorin - thanks!

In Reply To

Dr Death

Apologies for interrupting the flow of this thread, but thanks DrDeath for this description of Thorin.

As I wrote somewhere in the threads above, I think Armitage is too old to play young Thorin in a scene about the sacking of Erebor. Battle of Azanulbizar, a definite possibility. They can age him quite easily for the Quest.

I've watched Armitage's work and he is good at playing characters who have deep rooted emotional conflicts as a consequence of events in their pasts. I sense he enjoys being cast in roles where the characters are complex, often stern, even haughty on the one hand, but have another underlying, more compassionate, benevolent side to them. (Multi dimensional characters). He is the sort of actor that does a lot of research into the backstory of his characters so I have high hopes that he is going to do justice to Thorin. He's also been raised on Tolkien's writing which is re-assuring.

I guess, how he portrays Thorin will also depend on the script writers and Peter Jackson's interpretation of the character. Peter Jackson stated at one time that he felt Thorin was in "good hands" with Armitage. I'm inclined to agree with him the more I read about Thorin's past in the ROTK appendices and the description of his meeting with Gandalf in Unfinished Tales Smile

I don't think so

The Hobbit is about Bilbo Baggins, so the movie should open with him.

Well

just as FotR opened with a spectacle, I wondered if PJ would start TH with something similar. He's got two films and can afford a leisurely pace to tell the whole story properly. Going from dragon attacks and epic battles to the sleepy Shire will just make you more aware of what it is that Bilbo is being asked to undertake.

FoTR opened in a spectacle

Because the Prologue (especially the Last Alliance) was absolutely necessary. Such is not the case with The Hobbit. Flashbacks and/or dialogue from Thorin will suffice, just as it is in the book.

If we see Thorin and Gandalf meet, and then see the two of them planning the expedition, it ruins the surprise of thirteen dwarves showing up on Bilbo's doorstep.

I suppose I find flashbacks

a bit corny and would rather have a chronological story. I always thought the flashback in TH spoiled the pace. But that's just me and I've got no strong feelings either way. The main thrust of my question was to ask if any purists would object to a time compression as regards the Thorin story.

I think...

...we may end up getting one or two flashbacks, especially in the opening scenes with Bilbo and the Dwarves when Gandalf talks of Thrain II giving him the key and map.

From what I've read and seen of Richard Armitage, I think you are right in your appreciation of the roles that he's played - or most of them. Playing Dawn French's boyfriend in The Vicar of Dibley was less multi-dimensional Wink.

As for his being raised on Tolkien, in a early interview given after the heady North and South days, he said that his favourite book was Lord of the Rings. Perhaps he will walk around the set with a battered copy of The Hobbit, making sure that all the right nuances will be there.

The Quest for Erebor, putting the tale of The Hobbit into the context of the wider politics of Middle-earth, shows quite clearly the arrogance and bombastic bluster of Thorin. It will be interesting to see if this side of him is played down in favour of more troubled, complex, brooding (which is easier to transform into 'heart throb' potentiality).

Vicar of Dibley

as much as I enjoy both VoD and RA... I don't think it's the best showcase of RA's work. :-)

However, my favorite parts of VoD were always the 'joke' after the credits. And I think that last 'joke' of the series with RA's character added to the mix of the Vicar and Verger is absolutely perfect. (I could say absolutely fabulous but I haven't actually seen that show with French and Saunders)
