Hollywood Reporter: Ian McKellen officially signed

Quote
Ian McKellen has signed on to return as wizard Gandalf in The Hobbit, the two-pic adaptation of the J.R.R. Tolkien novel being directed by Peter Jackson. The dealmaking on Hobbit for a slew of Jackson veterans from his Lord of the Rings trilogy has been coming fast and furious and comes on the heels of Andy Serkis finally inking his deal to reprise Gollum.

The Hobbit book introduced Gandalf and Gollum, with both characters going on to become part of literature’s most popular characters. Gandalf sets the adventure going in the story and appears throughout the novel. Gollum appears in a chapter that has gone on to be one of the most memorable in all of fantasy literature.

Elijah Wood signed his deal to return as Frodo last week, and Cate Blanchett will play Galadriel once again. Orlando Bloom has an offer to return as elf archer Legolas, though it’s too early to tell if a deal will be made. McKellen, who was nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of Gandalf, has spent recent years doing mostly voice work for film and TV, although he did star in the remake of AMC's The Prisoner. His last major film role was in 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand.

Hobbit starts shooting Feb. 14 in New Zealand.

It's a different article

http://www.deadline.com/2011/01/andy-serkis-signed-to-reprise-gollum-in-the-hobbit/

If you're redirected to another article, just go to "Film News". It goes something like:

"I'm told that Andy Serkis has closed his deal to bring back Gollum in The Hobbit, the two films that Peter Jackson will direct in New Zealand starting in February. Serkis will join returning cast members Cate Blanchett and Elijah Wood. Wood's participation was made official last week after Deadline first revealed his negotiations. According to sources, others who appeared in The Lord of the Rings poised to return at this point include Ian McKellen (who's still working out a deal to return as Gandalf in a major role), Christopher Lee is in talks to reprise the wizard Saruman, and Ian Holm to return as an older version of Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman is playing that title role in the two new movies). I've written in the past about a possible reprise of Orlando Bloom's Legolas, but it's unclear at this point if he'll be back."

That's....

some good news. McKellan had me worried a bit there, all the talk earlier of him being involved before the green light. And then the greenlight and no announcement....waiting, waiting, waiting.....and finally! Good times. Serkis too....I guess there is nothing to worry about now........and that would be a bit of sarcasm thrown in there for a Monday.....

What's the matter, James? No glib remark? No pithy comeback?"

It be so great if he'd do the narration of the opening and Wood would say the final words in Narration. Ian McKellan and the rest had to sign by now if starting next month.

As great as this is, I wish they would announce the cast in one shot. I really hope that by the end of the week we get an official announcement regarding Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving and Ian Holm! Hopefully tomorrow. I would also like to see Michael Fassbender and David Tennant announced for roles. With filming almost a month away, this should be the week we get the whole cast confirmed.

Gandalf the Grey

I know that he and PJ preferred Gandalf the Grey (in terms of character). I'd have to agree, but I also preferred Gandalf the Grey in terms of appearance (wasn't a big fan of the look of Gandalf the White).

Gandalf the Grey, I think, gives McKellen more to work with as an actor - which in turn yields more interest. Gandalf the Grey has more human qualities than his White counterpart - especially when it comes to basic human weaknesses like memory loss, fatigue, and a quick temper.

I can't wait to get a second go-around of this particular Gandalf.

I just hope that we get a better beard. The beard in FoTR looked thin, scraggly, and (in my opinion) fake. I'd like to see a thicker one in The Hobbit.

Here's the text of what he said.

All I had to decide was what to do with the time that is given me.

I’m 71 and fit: though at my age who knows what accident is 'round the next corner? For a year or more, I have been arranging my professional commitments around the possibility of The Hobbit films starting at almost anytime. We brought the Waiting for Godot tour of Australia to New Zealand early 2010, assuming I would stay on to start shooting soon after. Then there was yet another delay: but in Wellington I met with Guillermo del Toro and later read his script for Part One, written with the LOTR writing team. It was true to the style, the fun and the romance of the trilogy.

When Peter Jackson, already producing, resumed the director’s chair, he kept me in touch with developments. A second screenplay was sent over, on the understanding that I would not talk about what I read in it.

After the ruckus over trade union expectations and unlikely rumours of filming outside New Zealand, suddenly crucial casting was announced, plus a start date in February 2011. Martin Freeman as Bilbo sounds perfect. As my agent continued to negotiate with Warner Brothers, I kept wondering was Gandalf what I most wanted to do, more than a new play for instance or indeed a new part? Sequels aren’t necessarily as rewarding to act in as their originals.

Could I let Gandalf go? Would anyone else care if I did? Elsewhere, does anyone care that Michael Gambon was not the first to play Dumbledore?

The deciding negotiation was not about money but about dates. Gandalf is needed on set over the next 18 months but with sizeable breaks when I can work on other projects. My worry that I could not easily escape from Middle Earth was lifted.

I am happy to say I start filming in Wellington on February 21 2011.

I agree with you as well...

I must say I am excited about the White Council, but not as much about forcing other characters like Frodo in. We'll have to see how it all turns out... let's hope The Hobbit is treated at least as The Hobbit + additions, rather than an extension of Lord of the Rings with -fortunately for profit- a dragon!

Very interesting

The wording of the text. A lot can be read between the lines--it's a much different kind of announcement than the playful, delighed "I'm waiting for my call from Middle-earth" of some months ago.

1)His choice of opening statement. Can't help but think there's more to that than his most famous LOTR line. Thinking of Frod and Ring perhaps?

2)His mention of the script. Part One written by "Del Tor and the LOTR Team" and his reaction to it specifically, whereas he merely says "a second screenplay was sent to me." by Jackson. Second screenplay of what? The screenplay for Part 2? A Jackson re-write of Part 1, + A Jackson-written part 2? A total Jackson re-write of the whole thing? He doesn't give his reaction to the final draft/script. Recall that WB swiftly approved Part 1, while Part 2 took MUCH longer, during which G left.

3)He talks about "the pitfalls (or wehatever term he uses) of sequels." I can't believehe ever had a notion of this. How can he compare this to HP? Well...*I* certainly think Richard Harris will always BE Dumbledore! Did he ever think anyone else could be Gandalf!?!?

As for the rest--great news about Holm and OMG MY PRAYER--LEE!!!! Now I am biting my nails every DAY until I read, "Mr Lee has finished filming his scenes." At 90 anything can happen--a few weeks isn't that long a time, a few months. I HOPE TO GOD he has his stuff completed before April. PLease God...and let him live to see his completed work on the screen. You hear, Peter? No cutting this time around!Smile

This means the announcement of the Hobbit cast proper should be coming along VERY soon--please within the next 2 weeks! Most of the cast we still don't know! And if The Great Golblin or Necromancer in humanoid form is in there--well, is it still to ludicrous to hope a certain actor can play su`h a creature?:)

Agreed, Sir Ian IS Gandalf. The Hobbit wouldn't be the same without him.

Reading between the lines, it sounds like WB's "negotiators" made McKellen question if he wanted to come back at all.

I also wish he wouldn't compare his role to Dumbledore. Gandalf is THE wizard, Dumbledore is a cheap knock-off.

In Reply To
{Gandalf} is no more original then Dumbeldore.

Most Wizards are based on Merlin.

NB: Please don’t the start of your message in the Subject line, as it will be lost in replies.
Per his Letter #107, Tolkien himself thought of Gandalf as an Odinic wanderer, as in the Norse Eddas. There's also precedent to be found in the character Väinämöinen from the Finnish Kalevala. Look to those two sources, both very familiar to Tolkien, before haring off at low-flying merlins or bumbling dumbledores.

Back on topic, this article claims that Christopher Lee and Ian Holm have agreed to reprise their rôles in The Hobbit. There’s also mention of Liv Tyler and Hugo Weaving. And this article mentions not just a high salary for a brief cameo for Orlando Bloom, but also that Dominic Monaghan will appear.

I wouldn’t get too worked up over all this. Just wait and see.

…all eyes looked upon the ring; for he held it now aloft, and the green jewels gleamed there that the Noldor had devised in Valinor. For this ring was like to twin serpents, whose eyes were emeralds, and their heads met beneath a crown of golden flowers, that the one upheld and the other devoured; that was the badge of Finarfin and his house.

Never had any doubt whichsoever that Sir Ian would return. He, irrefutably, would be Gandalf. Much as Sir Christopher would be Saruman. In my humble opinion, of course. Hopefully, the reports of Christopher Lee and Ian Holm being in the midst of negotiating a return to their respective roles in TH prove to be more than mere hearsay, and actually come to fruition. Indeed, it shall be something to savour if they are both to return. Much to look forward to.

No mention of Hugo Weaving? Rather odd, considering Elrond's relative prominence in TH. Perhaps he would be in the midst of negotiations as well. Rather furtive negotiations. And what of the characters of Bard the Bowman and Thranduil? Two rather pivotal roles for which no announcements have, at this stage, been forthcoming. Oh well, all shall be revealed within the next few weeks, of that much I would be certain.

WRONG

Gandalf is a far more complex, original, and profound character than Dumbledore. Just because Merlin exists does not mean that all wizard characters developed after are based on him.
I find very few similarities.
Though I would be willing to bet that Dumbledore was at least heavily inspired by Gandalf.

I really do get annoyed

when I here people talking about Gandalf and Dumbledore. Over the years I've read many, many works of fantasy and none of them has ever touched the depth, complexity and beauty of Tolkien's work. I've nothing against Harry Potter, found the films quite entertaining, but they really are very, very shallow in comparison.

I really cannot ever see anyone ever managing to equal or surpass the work of Tolkien - it was his life,

Yes!

Ian Holm and Christopher Lee are in negotiations? Fantastic news! I was worried about both of them, and it's great to get semi-confirmation of the return of both actors. I especially can't wait to see what Lee has in store for us... in The Hobbit he will finally get a chance to portray Saruman during his decline; his downfall... I'm sure it will be a much more interesting role than the one in Lord of the Rings. There should be a lot more to the character this time round.

Ian McKellen and Andy Serkis are signed? Well, okay. Good. I was 99% sure that both actors would be returning, so I'm not feeling any relief or surprise at this news – I had a mild 'yes!' moment for a second or two when I saw McKellen's name, but that's pretty much it. Now I just feel deeply contented...

I enjoy the Harry Potter movies and all, but come on. Dumbledore is probably an homage to Gandalf (or Ian McKellen).

The Gandalf/Dumbledore parallel is exaggerated

They really aren't similar characters if you look beyond a superficial level (both are old men with beards and they can do magic). Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows goes to great lengths to flesh out Dumbledore's character via flashbacks and so on, and there really isn't much in common with Olórin there...

I especially can't wait to see what Lee has in store for us... in The Hobbit he will finally get a chance to portray Saruman during his decline; his downfall... I'm sure it will be a much more interesting role than the one in Lord of the Rings. There should be a lot more to the character this time round.

I agree very strongly. I know there are a lot of people around here who want to see The Hobbit, The Whole Hobbit and Nothing But The Hobbit, but I'm all for seeing more Saruman stuff, and the rest of the White council too. That whole part of the tale sets the scene for what happens in later films so well.

Battling with Dumbledores

In Reply To
I enjoy the Harry Potter movies and all, but come on. Dumbledore is probably an homage to Gandalf (or Ian McKellen).

There was a merry passenger,
a messenger, a mariner:
he built a gilded gondola
to wander in, and had in her
a load of yellow oranges
and porridge for his provender;
he perfumed her with marjoram
and cardamom and lavender.

...

He battled with the Dumbledores,
the Bumbles, and the Honeybees,
and won the Golden Honeycomb;
and running home on sunny seas
in ship of leaves and gossamer
with blossom for a canopy,
he polished up, and furbished up,
and burnished up his panoply.

...

“Errantry”, J.R.R. Tolkien 1933

The Silmarillion, pp 150-151

When I read that line

I panicked for just a fraction of a second. I hate it when great things – like Christopher Lee returning – turn out to be dreams. I usually wake up when I say to myself 'This is too good to be true, perhaps it's a dream'. So if this was indeed a dream, I probably would have awakened as soon as I read that sentence and contemplated it...

This better not be one of those dreams from Inception.

It's a real word........

... an English dialect word for a bee based on Old German. Used in some Victorian poems.

In Reply To

Although those are by no mean mutually exclusive categories, in this case we find citations of the word dating at least back into the 1700s.

Dumbledore derives from dumble-, which in insect names alternates as a prefix with things like bumble- and humble-, and from dor, meaning a buzzing bee or fly.

One can find a dumble bee citation from the 1500s, while dor (or dorr) dates back to the very start of the Anglo-Saxon period, appearing in the Épinard Glossary from about 700.

It’s like the old names for a spider, cob or lob, that Tolkien uses, or even orc for demon and ent for giant, among many others. Those all come out of Middle English or before.

Careful with your Wrong and Rights..

I don't consider Gandalf more complex or profound then Dumbeldore. I'm not in any way a potter fan - in fact i have many an issue with the series on whole but I think Dumbeldore deserves a little more respect than you seem to give him.

Thanks, but

I'm confident in my "wrong" statement. I'm a HUGE Harry Potter fan but Dumbledore is definitely less profound and complex. He's still a great character, just nothing compared to Gandalf. Sorry.

I wasn't going to respond because my orignal comment was a throw away thought but you've poked me...

Your entitled to your opinon but I don't believe one person opinons is right or wrong. It's a view on a matter after all.

My original comment was merely suggesting that I don't think Dumbeldore was a rip off ... that is all.

Dumbledore is Modern English, not Old

In Reply To
Improper text-as-subject not inserted or something like that. I read so on a Harry Potter site years ago.

No, that’s not correct. Dumbledor(e) was used in the 18th and 19th centuries, with just a bit in the 20th. It still may exist as a regionalism. That’s is not “Old English”!

Old English was from around 700–1150 AD, with Middle English running about 1150–1470. Even Early Modern English ran only from 1470–1650 or so.

Dumbledore has only been attested in Modern English. It was around plenty during the 19th century — which nobody but nobody would call Old English. It is Modern English, and not even Early.

The dor(r) component is indeed from Old English, but that’s all.

Is it just your opinion that there's no wrong or right, or is it your opinion that your right and we're wrong?

Either way, it's still just opinion. Yes, my opinion is still just an opinion, but it's equally valid as yours' - since all we both have is opinions.

Way to channel my thoughts, Duats

I love you for this. II am not alone and neither are you. I feel exactly the same. Add to this a proper display of his laming blue enchantments this time around, and you won't hear much in the way of complaints from me (well, maybe the occassional Glorfindel gripe, but nothing else! lol).
I too want the beard at maximum full. I never thought it looked fake, but there were points at which it seemed to straggely (and of course, in The White incarnation it was just way too damned unacceptably short!). I think when catches and embraces Frodo in FOTR, when he first comes through The Door and stoops to inspect the Ring where Bilbo has left it lying upon the floor of Bag End ( as well as during most of his conversation with Bilbo about The Ring), and when he is cautioning Saruman against using The Pallantir, in those instances his beard looks the best, and I would be comfortable with the appearance if it met that standard throught The Hobbit.

In Reply To
I know that he and PJ preferred Gandalf the Grey (in terms of character). I'd have to agree, but I also preferred Gandalf the Grey in terms of appearance (wasn't a big fan of the look of Gandalf the White).

I can't wait to get a second go-around of this particular Gandalf.

I just hope that we get a better beard. The beard in FoTR looked thin, scraggly, and (in my opinion) fake. I'd like to see a thicker one in The Hobbit.
