Happy Birthday Professor Tolkien!

In the past, at 9 pm in each of our time zones, there would be a toast given to celebrate our Professor's birthday. In that spirit, I raise my glass to that Good Man.

I bow to the gift he gave us
Of himself.
Wizard, Master, Ranger, Guide,
Elf-lord, King, Hobbit of the Shire.
A consummate Storyteller;
A conduit for the tale and world
Needed in our time;
For all time.
An escape to a place
Not of this earth,
But somewhere in the Middle,
Where we can rest
And be a part of his world
That feels like home.

Happy Birthday Professor Tolkien... and thanks!

I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.

*raises mug* The Professor!

In advance, I realize, as it's going to be quite a while before it's 9 p.m. here! Wink But words on his behalf are never early - or late - they are posted exactly when they are meant to be:

“He was the sort of painter who can paint leaves better than trees. He used to spend a long time on a single leaf, trying to catch its shape, and its sheen, and the glistening of dew-drops on its edges. Yet he wanted to paint a whole tree, with all of its leaves in the same style, and all of them different.

“There was one picture in particular which bothered him. It had begun with a leaf caught in the wind, and it became a tree; and the tree grew, sending out innumerable branches, and thrusting out the most fantastic roots. Strange birds came and settled on the twigs and had to be attended to. Then all round the Tree, and behind it, through the gaps in the leaves and boughs, a country began to open out; and there were glimpses of a forest marching over the land, and of mountains tipped with snow. Niggle lost interest in his other pictures; or else he took them and tacked them on to the edges of his great picture. Soon the canvas became so large that he had to get a ladder; and he ran up and down it, putting in a touch here, and rubbing out a patch there. "

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"For I will sing to you of Frodo of the nine Fingers and the Ring of Doom.
"And when Sam heard that he laughed aloud for sheer delight, and he stood up and cried: 'O great glory and splendour! And all my wishes have come true!' And then he wept.
"And all the host laughed and wept, and in the midst of their merriment and tears the clear voice of the minstrel rose like silver and gold, and all men were hushed. And he sang to them, now in the Elven-tongue, now in the speech of the West, until their hearts, wounded with sweet words, overflowed, and their joy was like swords, and they passed in thought out to regions where pain and delight flow together and tears are the very wine of blessedness."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Happy Birthday, dear sir! Heart

To the professor!

"There, peeping among the cloud-wrack above a dark tor high up in the mountains, Sam saw a white star twinkle for a while. The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a shaft, clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was a light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."

O Shore beyond the Shadowy Sea!
O Land where still the Edhil are!
O Haven where my heart would be!
The waves still beat upon thy bar,
The white birds wheel; there flowers the Tree!
Again I glimpse them long afar
When rising west of West I see
Beyond the world the wayward Star,
Than beacons bright in Gondobar
More fair and keen, more clear and high.
O Star that shadow may not mar,
Nor ever darkness doom to die.

Moonlight's, moon, has, the, mellow,
Secrecy, of, mellowing, water's, water-
Mellons, mellowly. Moonlight's, a, mellow,
Mellower, being, moon's, mellow, daughter.
Moonlight's, melody, alone, has, secrecy,
To, make, watermelons, sweet, and, juicy.

Happy Birthday Sir

To the most respected and revered man in my world, thank you for your undaunted persistence in following your OWN heart, and listening deeply to that which moved your soul. It was the most fantastic journey of a lifetime, creating a world rich, beautiful and utterly sublime. You are peerless sir. It is because of your humanity.

To a beautiful and humble spirit
Who had opened his heart to a fathomless Divine
And through his given visions brought us,
Through his music of words,
A vast world of riches that we explore
With abandon in wonder and awe to find
The transcendent beauty of a world and a humanity,
Enriching our own.

''The Nameless Land

There lingering lights do golden lie
On grass more green than in gardens here,
On trees more tall that touch the sky
With silver leaves a swinging clear:
By magic dewed they may not die
Where fades nor falls in the endless year,
Where ageless afternoon goes by
O'er mead and mound and silent mere.
There draws no dusk of evening near,
Where voices move in vailed choir,
Or shrill in sudden singing sheer.
And the woods are filled with wandering fire......''

''Day came pale from the East. As the light grew it filtered through the yellow leaves of the mallorn, and it seemed to the hobbits that the early sun of a cool summer's morning was shining. Pale-blue sky peeped among the moving branches. Looking through an opening on the south side of the flet Frodo saw all of the valley of the Silverlode lying like a sea of fallow gold tossing gently in the breeze.''

''Poor old Willow-man, you tuck your roots away!
Tom's in a hurry now. Evening we follow day.
Tom's going home again water -lillies bringing.
Hey! Come derry dol! Can you hear me singing?''

''When Sam awoke, he found that he was lying on some soft bed, but over him gently swayed wide beechen boughs, and through their young leaves sunlight glimmered green and gold. All the air was full of a sweet mingled scent.''

''They stepped out of the beech grove in which they had lain, and passed on to a long green lawn, glowing in sunshine, bordered by stately dark-leaved trees laden with scarlet blossoms. Behind them they could hear the sound of falling water, and a stream ran down before them between flowering banks and passed then on under an archway of trees, through which they saw the shimmer of water far away.''

''Wonder

A resacralization of living nature, and living in nature, is of course a matter of re-enchantment. Its hallmark is the kind of non-utilitarian, open-ended response that I have called, and after Tolkien, wonder: as in, 'the realization, independent of the conceiving mind, of imagined wonder.' C.N. Manlove is right that 'there is a very definite and constant character to fantasy, and in nothing is it perhaps so markedly constant as its devotion to wonder at created things, and its profound sense that that wonder is above almost everything else a spiritual good not to be lost.' A fantasy like the Lord of the Rings can help us not only to imagine wonder, but realize it by returning to our world and seeing it afresh. It offers renewal not through escapism, but reconnection.''

Defending Middle-earth- Tolkien: Myth and Modernity by Patrick Curry.

Ye! utuvienves!
Yes, dear professor Tolkien i have found it and it is you. And through you i have found myself. Thank you beyond words.

....O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

.......{({(SPLASH})})

(This are my tributes from the past two years. I am a bit ill and cannot at the moment contribute a new one. My apologies.)

''Sam put his ragged orc-cloak under his master's head, and covered them both with the grey robe of Lorien; and as he did so his thoughts went out to that fair land, and to the Elves, and he hoped that the cloth woven by their hands might have some virtue to keep them hidden beyond all hope in this wilderness of fear...But their luck held, and for the rest of that day they met no living or moving thing; and when night fell they vanished into the darkess of Mordor.'' - - -rotk, chapter III

May the grace of Manwë let us soar with eagle's wings!

In the air, among the clouds in the sky
Here is where the birds of Manwe fly
Looking at the land, and the water that flows
The true beauty of earth shows
With the stars of Varda lighting my way
In all the realms this is where I stay
In the realm of Manwë Súlimo

To the professor! Happy eleventy-ninth birthday! //

For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much -- the wheel, New York, wars, and so on -- while all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man, for precisely the same reasons. -- Douglas Adams

Do we walk in legends or on the green earth in the daylight?

Happy Birthday Sir!. My birthday is in June and I have a tradition of reading the Hobbit on that day. I live on a heavily forested island and if it's nice weather I usually walk to some favorite forest, sit under a tree and read it. Thanks for that gift that keeps on giving and my gift to you is to keep Middle Earth alive in my mind as long as I live. Cheers!

To the Bird and the Baby, to good friends and good stories, and to the Professor!

Since the climax of our celebration this day will be a toast to the Professor, it is important to me to have something special in my mug when I perform said toast. Since my parents won't let me have a Guiness yet, though, I'm limited to non-alcholic bevarages. Wink So, I would LOVE to hear y'all's suggestions for a delectable concoction which is worthy of such a toast as this. I'm thinking of starting with a base of Ginger Ale if that helps, I just don't know what to add... Smile

Let's see: how about mixing that ginger ale (the ginger could represent the medicinal qualities of miruvor) with some fruit juice for the fruits of the Shire, and a small bit of honey for the honey-cakes of the Beornings?

Brilliant!

I mixed Ginger Ale together with some grape juice and a tad bit of honey as per your suggestion and it was a huge success! It was fresh, fruity, clear, and had a golden aftertaste. Oh, and the meanings you gave behind the ingredients lent to the drink a fourth ingredient which I can't quite put my finger on.
