Mikael Persbrandt in The Hobbit?

Hey all!

On of the Sweden's biggest newspaper has an article today saying that they got a scoop that Swedish actor Mikael Persbrandt has got a role in The Hobbit.
It doesnt say which role but they are very sure about this fact.

Article is in Swedish.
http://www.aftonbladet.se/...lm/article8218240.ab

Mikael is very famous in Sweden but less known I guess in the rest of the world.
Although he is a very good actor. :-)

Cheers!

Mikael Persbrandt on IMDB

The article says that the character has a "Nordic connection". I don't think he'll play one of the dwarves, as he's quite tall (1.89 m) and slim. Maybe Beorn, Thranduil or Bard...

This is great news for us Swedes!

Oops, I made a new thread about this... didn't see this one...

From Aftonbladet:

"The Swedish actor has landed a role in the Hollywood production 'The Hobbit' based on the book 'Bilbo - en hobbits äventyr' by J R R Tolkien. Mikael Persbrandt's role in the movie is unclear, but reports indicates that his character will have a Nordic connection. Persbrandt is now going meet great Hollywood names as the actress Cate Blanchett and the director Peter Jackson, who also directed the LOTR-trilogy.
- He is really excited over this. He's looking forward to do a Hollywood movie, a source says.

According to sources, Mikael Persbrandt has already tried out clothes that may be used in the movie."

http://www.aftonbladet.se/...lm/article8218240.ab

He's almost completely unknown abroad, but he's one of Sweden's most well known, beloved and respected actors, although he's also somewhat of a bad boy.

Beorn?

In the article you can read this.

"Mikael Persbrandts role in the movie in unclear, but word is that the character will have a "nordic link". "

This makes me think he will play Beorn. Beorn is pronounced "Björn" in Swedish and that is "Bear" in English.
But I guess we have to wait and see if this is true at all. Smile

Yeah, going by his face alone

he's likely been cast as Thranduil. Although the "Nordic connection" hints at Beorn... "Beorn" is pronounced the same as "Björn" (which is more of a pun than a connection of course). I can't see this guy as Bard at all.

Mikael Persbrandt? Wow, will pull me out of the story right there. He'll probably play Bard.

Persbrandt usually plays "tough guys" like in the series of kommisarie Beck.

And he is "tough". He always seem to play a fellow with a big mouth and a pistol close in hand.

I only know him from the Beck series (which is one of the few crime thingies I not only endure, but quite like), and love both his character and his work.

I don't see him as Beorn, though, whom I always figured more, well, bear-like… My guess is Bard.

Maybe the Master of Lake-town?

"Nordic" could even refer to Lake-town. I guess it depends what the filmmakers are basing Lake-town on.

ETA: Watching the clip, it looks like he could make a good Dwarf too, maybe Balin or Dain? I don't think they'll cast an almost complete unknown as Bard seeing as he's one of the lead characters. Just my thoughts.

NÖJESBLADET REVEALS: Mikael Persbrandt is in the sequel to ”Lord of the Rings”: He is really excited
Nöjesbladet can reveal that the Swedish actor is confirmed for the Hollywood movie ”The Hobbit”.
”He’s really excited over this,” a source says.
A couple of weeks ago Nöjesbladet revealed that Mikael Persbrandt, 47, will play secret agent Carl Hamilton in a new movie based on Jan Guillou’s popular books.
Here’s the next big scoop: The Swedish actor has landed a role in the Hollywood production ”The Hobbit” based on the book ”Bilbo - en hobbits äventyr” by J R R Tolkien. Mikael Persbrandt's role in the movie is unclear, but reports indicates that his character will have a Nordic connection. Persbrandt is now going meet great Hollywood names as the actress Cate Blanchett and the director Peter Jackson, who also directed the LOTR-trilogy.
”He is really excited over this. He's looking forward to do a Hollywood movie,” a source says.
According to sources, Mikael Persbrandt has already tried out clothes that may be used in the movie. Persbrandt’s shootings will take place during a couple of weeks early next year. The movie’s premiere is in december 2012 in USA. Peter Jansson, Mikael Persbrandt’s agent, is very secretive when confronted by Nöjesbladet.
Do you deny this reports?
”I have no comments.”
Jens Peterson, film critic at Nöjesbladet, has visited the set of ”The Two Towers” and ”The Fellowship of the Ring” in New Zealand. He believes that Persbrandt is up for a tough test.
”I have seen the tough and demanding world Peter Jackson creates. There will be none of the typical Hollywood conveniences,” he says.
”I must be a very special feeling to land a role in ’The Hobbit’. This will be movies that will live on for very long, and have a very high artistic level. A memorable contribution in ’The Hobbit’ will likely land Persbrandt more roles in the future. This is a unique chance,” Peterson says.
Nöjesbladet hasn’t been able to reach Persbrandt for a comment.

Good translation, and

The essence of it all is that it's a done deal. According to Aftonbladet, that is. This report has sense in it and Jens Peterson is a huge LOTR fan and has met up with PJ plenty of times, he knows how to seperate a rumours from facts.

However since it's not officially confirmed yet, we'll just have to await the announcements. I could bet a few coins on that S. McCoy will be announced as Radagast and M.Persbrandt as Bard in a close future.

... someone along the lines of Aragorn, the "human hero" of the story, who has (or will have seeing as there's two films) a well-defined and developed character arc as opposed to other characters on the sidelines.

I'm still holding out for Michael Fassbender in the role of Bard Evil

According to the translation, the article says

"Persbrandt’s shootings will take place during a couple of weeks early next year.", so I don't think it will be Bard or Thranduil, since their roles seem to be bigger. I don't think all Thranduil or Bard scenes in the movie could be shot in a "couple of weeks", especially since the whole shoot is supposed to last almost a whole year.

My guess is Beorn, although he is closest to how I picture Thranduil.

This took me totally be surprise!

I have watched a good deal of Beck movies, and his performance in that series, always cracks me up. Not because that role is funny, but because Gunvald is so damn "straight forward, and uses some quite colourfull language. The fact that he uncovers sick people for who they really are, and that he says straight out what he thinks about them, is also something I love about that character

But Ive also seen other sides of his acting, both in beck and a Norwegian movie, called " (the) Kautokeino opprøret (rebellion)". In Beck, I remember him having some very emmotional scenes, where his performance, is quite breathtaking..

I might have suggested Bard, but seing the time constraint, I dont think so. It might be though that those two weeks, are just his first shooting though session though, and that he is just going to shoot some other work, before coming back to shoot in NZ. He will definatly Not! be cast as Thranduil, its just not in his nature, he probably could have pulled it off, but its so unlike him.

Beorn, or a Dwarf in the prologue/backstory is my best bet. But as others have said, Mikael Persbrandt, would make a good Beorn, and I must say I agree. Its probably the most likely.

However, whichever role he gets, this is good news Wink.

I'd guess at Beorn too...

... tho' Dain seems to me to be another possibility, made all the more likely if he's tall. Wasn't John Rhys Davies the tallest of the Fellowship actors? And as several people have said, it can't be a very big part if he's only filming for a couple of weeks.

Mikael Persbrandt

looks like a good potential Bard to me. I can't really picture him as Beorn as some people are suggesting – Beorn should be bigger and bulkier, like Ron Perlman or Brian Blessed. I suppose Persbrandt would make an acceptable Thranduil, but he really seems more like a Man to me. Laketown is located in the northern regions of Middle-earth, so I can sort of see why they would decribe the character as 'Nordic'.

As for Cate Blanchett, I don't think this newspaper would be given that kind of brand-new casting information and then casually toss it into the discussion like that. I think they only mentioned Blanchett because they thought she was more well-known by their Swedish readers... notice that they only mention her in the context of Persbrandt. It's 'Persbrandt is going to meet Cate Blanchett', not 'We are proud to exclusively announce that Cate Blanchett will be in The Hobbit'. It's almost as if they're taking her participation for granted, rather than stating it as a piece of news. I'd take it with a grain of salt.

Here is the image which convinced me that Persbrandt would be a good fit for Bard.

If this were just a baseless rumor, he would have discarded it as such. But this is the response from his agent:

Jansson: "No comment."
Nojesbladet: "Do you deny this information?"
Jansson: "I have no comment as regarding to it."

This simply reeks of truth.

Now, the two bits of information.

-"Nordic ties."
-Couple of weeks of shooting early next year.

Now, we know (via Ms. Boyens) that the Hobbiton shoot will only last a week or so. Add this to his large stature, and I think we can conclude that he won't be a hobbit. And if it's true that he's only shooting for a few weeks in early 2011, then we can safely rule out a dwarf role. Which leaves the likely suspects:

-Beorn
-Thranduil
-Bard
-Master of Lake-town

I've never kept my fears of Beorn being replaced with Radagast a secret, so a part of me hopes he is Beorn just so I can finally breath a sigh of relief knowing that the Bear Man is intact. Still, I could see him in any of the roles above (though I have my heart set on Michael Fassbender for Bard at the moment).

I've never heard of him, and I've never seen him in anything, so again I would be at Peter Jackson's mercy.

I'm stepping outside the box

Since we are getting two films, some roles that appear small in The Hobbit as a book may be extended more in the films. Until we see a script, we just can't assume what we know of the book will be the same in the film. That being said, while they aren't doing a full bridge film as orginally planned, they may well be doing some bridging of stories in these two films, which could also mean characters appearing in the film that don't appear in the books.

Where am I going with this? To Rohan, of course, the only culture in the original films that had a Nordic feel to them, including a language that is Nordic based. I don't believe the timeline is right for a young Theoden, but his father, yup, that fits. Then again, I can't really see why Rohan would play in the Hobbit at all.

From the images, I could see him playing Bard or Beorn, but I think both roles are going to be more than just a few weeks worth of work. Of course, the paper could be wrong about the timeline for work, but then, how much veracity does it have if not all the facts are correct.

I'm not so sure

that Perlman 'decided' not to be in The Hobbit. His comment was something along the lines of 'When Guillermo was doing it, I was in; now that he's not, I'm out'. This is essentially the same thing that Doug Jones said – and Jones still wants a part in Peter Jackson's version. It seems to me that Guillermo had characters in mind for both actors, but that he had not gotten round to serious discussions with them by the time he departed the project.

And I can think of plenty more actors in sweden that are way more overrated. He's one of those actors who handle both theatre and movie excellent (like Ian) and he has an impressive CV from both. 1984 he was on the Dramaten stage the first time, 1992 first time for movie/TV-series. Elrond Contemporary

If you went into casting Thranduil as an elf that needed the same intensity as Elrond (Hugo) you might come out with Mikael Persbrandt. He would bring some weight and authority to the elves in Mirkwood. Plus, he looks enough like Orlando to be his father.

Mikael Persbrandt has a bit more masculinity than say, Doug Jones.Sly

Still think it's a bad bad choice

A decent stage actor, sure, but I don't think he's a good movie/TV actor at all. I've seen him in various things since the soap "Rederiet" in the early 90s, and imo he has no real range. He's definitely no Ian. I also do think it matters what personality he is, this isn't just any movie project. Although unknown abroad, he's too arrogant and doesn't seem able to switch that off when needed.

As for other Swedish actors being more overrated than Persbrandt, that may be so, but there aren't many good ones to begin with, which is part of the problem. Just a few big fishies in a very small pond, hence the overrating.

If he's going to keep a Swedish inflection then either Beorn or they'll go with such accents for the men of Dale or the Iron Hills Dwarves, I'd think.

A Dwarf?

While Persbrandt could be playing either Beorn or Bard, I'm leaning towards him as one of the Dwarves, either Balin or Dain of the Iron Hills.

Dain seems possible to me...

I suggested him in an earlier post but no one picked up on it. I think perhaps not Balin if he's only filming a couple of weeks as Balin would be a much bigger part than that. But a dwarf seems quite possible to me. I can't imagine why anyone would describe an Elf as 'Nordic'.

Well, aren't the names of most of Tolkien's Dwarves derived from Nordic mythology and legend?

...And, Nordic Elves

Yes, I misread part of the previous post. Although, the Svartálfar, or dark elves of Norse mythology, resided in the underground world of Svartalfheim--much as Thranduil's Mirkwood kingdom is located underground.

lol

I kind of wondered if that was just a brain fart (as we call them around here).

Interesting about the Svartálfar. Tolkien must have known about them, right? The wikipedia entry was interesting to read.

Noted, but it doesn't matter

Getting all worked up over a rumor isn't really worth the time, and the only opinion that matters at the moment belongs to PJ and team. If this is true, then he was cast for a specific reason, be it a certain physical type, an appealing acting style or they made a personal connection.

Now a norwegian paper claims

that Persbrandt is going to voice a troll (rest of the article was just rehasments).

The story continues...

These reasons suggest

These reasons suggest a troll:
1. As http://en.m.wikipedia.org/...vian_folklore#Trolls shows, trolls are very Nordic.
2. Trolls are macho.
3. It does not matter so much if trolls have a non-English-speaking accent, as they are stupid and wild creatures. Indeed, it would be a natural decision for them to have a non-standard accent.

Interesting

If that is the role, I wonder if he will do motion-capture for it as well.

Tom, Bert or Bill?

So the Norwegians suggests that he would be voicing a troll. Where did you read about this?
Must be either Tom, Bert & Bill they have in mind then.

I thought they would go CGI all the way with the trolls but the fact that Aftonbladet mentions that he has been trying out costumes already makes me a bit confused.
Although Aftonbladet is a bit of a tabloid and they have been known to be wrong lots of times.

But this time I think they maybe are on to something. Jens Peterson is known to be a serious film critic and journalist and I don't think he would risk his reputation by speculating or just guessing.
Time will tell. I just wish PJ could make more casting official soon. Smile

Edit: Jens made a follow up article on the news about Mikael later the same day.
http://www.aftonbladet.se/...on/article8218782.ab

It contains comments about this will be a role Mikael will live with for the rest of his life. It also mentions other casting rumours about Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving and Ian Mckellen.

Beorn og Thranduil

A scandinavian actor playing a bjørn (bear), it could be great :) He's a fairly good actor, with a deep voice. On the other hand he would be good for the role of thrand. It could be a welcome kind of change in the storytelling, a sweed, presenting a new kind of actor to the films and a new race of elves. I like the idea and imagery. When it comes to bard, I would rather like to see what Fassbender is capable of. One of my favorite actors.

that he won't actually have a speaking role. He will be making the cracking sound when the thrush is breaking snail shells on Lonely Mountain. And as an extra treat for the kids, the bits of snail shell will fly at you in 3D. Weeeee

;), i hear he is going to record barfing sounds in a studio in sweeden and than send it via mail to NZ ;) Apparently some of the actors playing dwarf aren't that good at barfing.
