As may times as I've read LOTR, that never jumped out at me. But, by golly, you've found a contradiction by The Professor, haven't you? Maybe it can be rationalized by the possibility that Bilbo didn't feel comfortable calling Frodo his son (even though he raised him), but 'cousin' felt too distant, so he settled on nephew by default.
