Press Release from New Line/Warner Bros.: OSCAR WINNER PETER JACKSON TO DIRECT "THE HOBBIT" IN TWO INSTALLMENTS

OSCAR WINNER PETER JACKSON TO DIRECT "THE HOBBIT" IN TWO INSTALLMENTS
Peter Jackson Set to Direct J.R.R Tolkien's "The Hobbit" In a Two-Part 3D Production of Extraordinary Scope

(Los Angeles, October 15, 2010) The two films based on "The Hobbit" are now greenlit and will begin principal photography in February 2011, under the direction of Peter Jackson, it was jointly announced today by Toby Emmerich, President and Chief Operating Officer, New Line Cinema, Alan Horn, President and Chief Operating Officer, Warner Bros. and Steve Cooper, co-Chief Executive Officer of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc..

"Exploring Tolkien's Middle-earth goes way beyond a normal film-making experience" Jackson says, "It's an all-immersive journey into a very special place of imagination, beauty and drama. We're looking forward to re-entering this wondrous world with Gandalf and Bilbo - and our friends at New Line Cinema, Warner Brothers and MGM".

"Peter is a filmmaker of incomparable ability; having him return to Middle-earth to produce and direct is a dream come true. A true original, Peter is a gifted story-teller, visionary director and pioneer in film technology," said Emmerich. "Reuniting with Peter, Fran and Philippa truly makes it feel like we are going 'there and back again'."

"There is no human being on the planet as qualified as Peter Jackson to direct these films," said Horn. "Peter is incredibly talented and has the creative vision and experience to bring this beloved property to life in a way that no other filmmaker could. And the team of Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens has proven through their work on the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy that no one is more skilled at transforming Tolkien's written words into a vibrant, living language that makes the audience believe they are not merely visiting Middle-earth, but actually living in it. We couldn't be more thrilled and look forward to seeing "The Hobbit" take shape under Peter's stewardship and the team he is putting together."

"MGM is excited to move forward and add to the successful 'Lord of the Rings' franchise," said Cooper. "Under Peter's direction, the films will undoubtedly appeal to fans of the original 'LOTR' trilogy and also bring the stories to a new generation of fans."

Jackson, who directed all three "Lord of the Rings" films, will helm the two films back-to-back, telling the story of "The Hobbit" in two parts. Jackson will utilize groundbreaking visual effects and his incomparable story-telling to bring J.R.R. Tolkien's novel to the big screen. Both Hobbit movies will be filmed in Digital 3-D, using the latest camera and stereo technology to create a high quality, comfortable viewing experience. Jackson also co-wrote the screenplays with Fran Walsh, Phillipa Boyens and Guillermo del Toro.

"The Hobbit" is being co-produced by New Line Cinema and MGM, with New Line managing production, Warner Bros Pictures handling domestic distribution and MGM distributing internationally. Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Carolynne Cunningham are producing the films, with Phillipa Boyens as co-producer and Ken Kamins as executive producer.

The Oscar-winning, critically acclaimed LOTR trilogy grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide at the box office. In 2003, "Return of the King" swept the Academy Awards, winning all of the 11 categories in which it was nominated, including Best Picture - the first ever Best Picture win for a fantasy film. The trilogy's production was also unprecedented at the time.

WHERE...

IS IT GOING TO BE FILMED, DANGIT?!?! (and yes, I am "screaming" in caps)...

THIS ANNOUNCEMENT MEANS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO ME, UNTIL IT IS CONFIRMED THAT THE HOBBIT IS BEING FILMED 100% in NZ (WELL, ACTUALLY ALMOST 100%, WITH ANY OF CHRISTOPHER LEE"S WORK IN ENGLAND BEING THE EXCEPTION, IF HE IS ONBOARD IN AnY WAY.)

The absence of a location spot in this press release is conspicuous, given current events. COULDN'T YOU FOLKS AT THE STUDIOS WAIT JUST ANOTHER WEEK TO SORT THAT OUT BEFORE DUMPING THIS ON US? WHY DID YOU HAVE TO ANNOUNCE NOW? I could easily have waited another week... and what would it have cost you? Nothing.

ARE WE BEING PREPARED FOR A HEARTBREAKING DISAPPOINTMENT HERE?? A spoonful of sugar, to make the bitter go down sweet? Well, I'm not having it, and I hope you haven't used Peter in any way, to get YOUR way......I'm waiting for HIS word on this all-important subject.

After 6 yrs of heartbreak, excuse this fan if she is not exactly jumping up and down for joy... I'm not fooled so easily.

And I completely understand...

where you and everyone else is coming from, but I can't help but feel that we are being very cleverly manipulated like slavering Pavlov dogs here.

How quickly our dances of joy will turns to howls of shock and outrage (or many of us, anyway, if not everybody,..but certainly a LOT of folks would be less than happy) if WB followed this announcement with a change of location. (whether planned all along or not. They'd want to wait a discreet week untilall the globe had hads time to absorb this..then the clock will be ticking on Peter.

Someone mentioned that they picked up from the press release that WB never intended to have anyone else other than Peter direct. And the more I read the release, the more I am bothered by this. They could have tossed the man a feeble bleating bone, Alan Horn offering up something like this: "While we appreciate all the time and effort Guillermo piut into this project during his two years spent in NZ..." etc. But no, instead he is ceremoniously tossed into the dustbin of history, with only sa fleeting mention.

This is even more jarring in light of the fact that Del Toro's latest project, a film he was producing called "Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark," has been suddenly and very unceremoniouly dumped by Disney at the very literal; eve of when that studio was due to begin marketing it. G has been devestated by this, and has made no attempt to hide it. The film is now stuck in limbo pending the sale of Mirimax.

So between that and this lovely press release, it's a glorious two-fingered salute--one finger per hand, one hand for each studio---to Guillermo Del Toro.
.

They'd never do things like that to Peter Jackson--or maybe they are in the process of doing it.

I can only hope that the premature release of this official greenlight was done with Peter's willing, *uncoerced* permission, either as a sign that the union dispute is indeed on the verge of resolvement, or last-ditch as a way of pressuring the unions to get their act together NOW...and not asa sign of defeat from him that the production is indeed moving on to other places, and they're using our ecsastic response as a way of blackmailing him to "accept the inevitable."

"Everything is set to go, and the fans are eager. Come on, Peter, no use in not being a gentleman and a team player. You wouldn't want to let your fans down, now would you?"

There is a certain film I am thinking of now, reading this, a film I am going to watch...and it is not Lord of the Rings. Nor is it anyhting of Del Toro's. ..

I mentioned this in another thread. While I am happy about the greenlight, certain comments from the execs bothered me. Especially the one where they said Jackson was the only man for the job. Did they forget that they had an Academy-Award-nominated director working on this project for two years? It's like Del Toro was never even on board at all.

I was ecstatic when Del Toro was signed. When Jackson said he wouldn't be returning to the director's chair, Del Toro was who I wanted. The man is a master of his craft, and has a truly unique eye for fantasy. It was a marriage made in heaven, as far as I was concerned. So people will have to pardon me for being so troubled by this. I understand PJ delivered a financially and critically successful trilogy. But give GDT his due credit, please.

Thank you

And so you get the feeling now that maybe just as they wanted the "blockbuster franchise guy" for the job, (as opposed to the other Oscar-winner director) adn were willing to (perhaps) manipulate the chips--and oh so patiently, for years--tighening the thumbscrews on Del Toro, perhaps, to pressure him into quitting---even willing to go to the lengths of pulling him off a *Stepehn Spielberg collaberation*--they knew full well the possibilty of a schedule conflict?

Perhaps they foget the example of Irvin Kershner. But that's right, it took over a decade for TESB to be properly appreciated by fans and critics.

So who';s to say, then, that Kangi isn'r right and they've had a non-NZ scenario in the works all along, b/c if the production stays in NZ it will give Peter too much power and control over the production? We've seen he has already lost 2 key battles: the 3D battle, and let's not forget, he had no input whatsover on the LOTR theatrical Blu-Ray release.

What other compromises in quality and control is Peter going to be forced to make (and we fans accept)?

Think about it: they'd want to cut himn down to size. No lawsuits against *WB* for "studio accounting" for TH!

*Ph boy..I must leave before I jump the gun, reveal the film I am watching, and speak my true thoughts....but glad to see there is another healthy skeptic here. We can hang out here and wait for the other shoe to drop....while the (hopefully not misguided) party goes on.

I am hoping the news will be decent. I cannot say "good" b/c too much has been lost already, at the cost of so much heartbreak for so many talwnted people, Some of whiom would have joined us at the boards on TORN. One or two still might, if they are involved...

I had better turn back to what I am watching now, and continie to write the essay that is pending TORN in my head. It's been brewing for a week now...

Well...

I was not insinuating that I don't appreciate del toro. like you, I was ecstatic when he was the first choice when Jackson didn't want the job. Of course I always wanted Jackson the most, in the back of my mind.
When stating your concern about the studio execs comments about always wanting Jackson, You must remember that Del Toro was on board long before alot of those execs were around. Back before MGM went bankrupt. When WB took over, I am sure that they would have prefered a bigger name than Del Toro to lead this $500 million project. Of course his films are good, and popular, but they have nowhere near the draw that Jacksons films do. Studios like big names when dishing out big money.
If Del Toro was secretly booted, then I am sorry. That would be unfair. But I don't believe that. I think he needed to move on from a potentially stale project. And that tells me he wasn't the man for the job. PJ and team has Tolkiens work imbedded deep into their hearts, and they needed to see this through. They have invested so much into this world, and have diligently been there for the fans. This was always meant to be their project, and legacy.
If The Hobbit production moves away from NZ, I will cry for at least a week. But I will find comfort in knowing that whatever happens, Wingnut films is in control, and I know I can trust them. And boy have they earned that trust.

Another perspective - I don't see this as much Pavlovian conditioning but more Public Relations...

for a film mired in negativity. Perhaps the studio is getting behind it's writer/producer that is now the director. He is the only one that has been there and will now seemingly, go back again.

Don't misunderstand - I hope that Guillermo Del Toro will receive his due. He will be credited as a co-writer. It remains to be seen how much of his work will survive and make it's way into the final films.

Production on the first film starts in February in New Zealand (again, pending that labor issue). The second gets shot right after, or even overlaps a little with it, and the movies would hit theaters in December of 2012 and 2013.

Final thoughts on GDT

In Reply To

I don't mean to turn this into a GDT-PJ debate, so this will be my last post on the issue.

I remember back when Del Toro signed, he and PJ held an online chatroom where they answered questions concerning The Hobbit. I remember reading GDT's comments, and seeing how committed and focused he was on this project. Just hearing him discuss the thematic aspects of Bilbo's journey left no doubt in my mind that he "got" it. He was even going to include the talking animals, and show off more of Gandalf's magical nature. I'm sure TORN has a transcript of chat somewhere. If you haven't read it, I strongly encourage it.

At the end of the day, the man put his other projects on the back-burner, relocated across the world, and poured two years of his life into developing these movies. If that doesn't show committment and passion for Tolkien's work, I don't know what does.

Since when

has an official studio announcement of a film/director ever been less than glowing, even for films doomed from the beginning, that turned out to be bonafide turkeys? GDT has been out of the project for months now (an absolute eternity in studio-time), and it's not the Hollywood way to acknowledge anything other than the present moment, or that they ever meant to do anything other than they're doing now. Of course, we love GDT and we acknowledge him, but I'm not at all surprised the suits want to pretend than none of the near-disasters of the past few years ever happened. Put on the big happy face and smile for the camera everyone! Tongue

Honestly, they probably always did want PJ to direct. So did most fans, including a large number of regulars here at TORN, if you remember. If you don't remember, do a search here on the boards and see how many posts there were, ranting and wailing that if PJ wasn't directing the movies they wouldn't be worth watching. When he announced he wasn't going to, many people were very upset, even to the verge of panic. It took a while for a lot of people to get used to the idea of GDT. And once we got used to the idea and got to know him, most of us were very happy again. And then we lost him, and we were very sad. Again. And now we're readjusting to what we originally wanted. And most of us will be happy. Again.

As far as the 3D issue goes

I doubt they forced Jackson to do it. Remember, the suits wanted Jackson for the directing job. Jackson was content to give it to someone else. If he was 100% against filming in 3D, I'm sure he wouldn't have agreed to it. I doubt the studios would risk him walking away.

We've come a long way since 2008, when Jackson and Del Toro said "no" to 3d outright. Since then, Weta stunned the world with its 3D work on Avatar, and it is currently working away on a 3D Tintin film. I wouldn't be surprised if Jackson saw the work they've been doing on Tintin and started warming up to the idea.

It does show commitment...

but he walked away - reluctantly and with great personal pain - of his own volition. I am a huge fan of GDT and was very sad to see him go. But I am also a Peter Jackson fan and admire his tenacity and endurance to stick with the project no matter how tough it got. I understand why GDT moved on and it is probably for the better. Hopefully GDT will be able to have many prosperous projects in his future.

I think a lot of this is PR-talk

The studios are gushing about the current production team to make the announcement as positive as possible. It's not that they don't appreciate Guillermo, but they want to avoid any less-than-great news. If the press release mentions Guillermo, it also has to go in to the history of him leaving the film. Why taint the announcement?

Yeah... no. I don't buy that for a second.

Studios cutting Peter Jackson down to size? He is never walked away from a fight. Do you remember the history of the LOTR?

And why would they be trying to screw the one guy trying to keep it all together? Filming in other locations has nothing to do with Peter Jackson. It's always been about the almighty dollar. They were suits before the movie and they will be after. Peter Jackson, according to several news syndications if you believe them, announced that they would have to look offshore if NZ couldn't provide better incentive for the film to be made there. The labor union issue is only part of the problem. The New Zealand Film Commission is a major part. You should read his 2010 investigation/report on NZ film making. Pretty insightful.

I agree

that this discussion doesn't really need to go further, so I will conclude as well. I was there, in that chat room that day. I remember very well. Like I said. I was ecstatic that GDT was taking the job, if Jackson wouldnt. And I am not denying his incredible personal investment in the films. But the bottom line is, he did leave, however justified the reasons. And PJ has gone above and beyond to stick with this project. His sacrifice far outweighs GDT's, and he has proven that he will stop at nothing to see these through, for the fans, for the mythology. Even if he'd rather not direct. I love GDT, always been a big fan. But PJ is the man for the job. Always has been.

I don't think we need to turn this into a conspiracy theory,

dissin' GDT, or anything else.

It's simple. Things finally worked out. PJ decided to direct, GDT decided he couldn't wait around. No big deal. It's just life. If they end up filming in NZ great. If not it will still be a great movie. Everybody relax and try to look at some good news and just enjoy it.

all of the time. Guillermo Del Toro originally said he was not going to be apart of The Hobbit and then he was... and then he wasn't. Peter Jackson said that he didn't want to direct and he wasn't and now he is. They (PJ and GDT) had said that 3D wasn't a consideration and now it is. My heart is all a-patter...

... thanks to my friend and sibbie Compa, I saw this first this this morning, and I'm shaking with excitement and anticipation. I'm listening to Bilbo's Song (from the ROTK Fan Credits Suite) to calm me down... what a journey this has been, and is going to be, oh my!

I'm glad to have loads of sibs to share this all with, or I might've just burst myself to bits from keeping all the exuberance brimming within Heart

Oh yes...

I remember my own posts quite well on that occasion, Silverlode.I don't have to search.

I wasn'r going to comment further, but since a mod replied...well,. you deserve a reply, Silverlode, and I hope you'll forgive me.

Two, things.

1) My posts back then occurred before I discovered that this project did, in fact, IMO, have its Irvin Kershner. (Yes, Compa, if you're reading this, you can take your footer down now. He borrowed that phrase from me.) I sincerely hope that this project, down the road, does not turn out to be "TESB directed by George Lucas.

The 1983 Lucas......as opposed to Kershner. But still Lucas. It would have been great, but TESB< it would have been not. (Apply that concept in inverse, thematic-wise, and you'll get the situation here.)

and 2)That was then, this is now.. Peter (somehow, I can never again call him PJ; it seems too "familar") is a Mogul now, and I would not care aboiut that so much if it hadn't shown up in his work lately. The fears that Peter has of trying to top his own work are real, and I am not sanguine about the future. I welcomed the impossible dream come true of the acquistition of a director who both still had a somewhat "outside-the-box", somewhat "under-the-radar" mentality, someone who had not yet been scorched by years under the global spotlight, AND was artistically qualified for the job.

If the studios never wanted Del Toro, why couldn't they have just said no to Peter in the first place. If someone can tell me where the Divine justice is fior the past 2 yrs, then I'd love to know. (Sorry, but ATMOM Is not worth it for me, much as I look forward to it. )

I can only hope Fran and Philppa remain true equals when the script goes through its inevitable innumerable onset revisions...

And..well. there's a 3 I guess: you all speak of PR...well, PR and TORN....I can't helpbit relive your incident, Silverlode...when 3 or 4 yrs ago or whenever that was, NL were going to boot Peter off TH and Peter jumped the gun and went stright to us fans here on TORN with a press release saying he was walking away. Or whatever that was. You remember? He beat Shaye to it, and their plans were foiled by the fan outrage. IN a sense, our reaction pressured them to back off, and ultimaterly led to his staying on the project.

I don't think anyone in Hollywood forgot this. First, the gall of the lawsuit against NL, (people simply don't DO that) over "Hollywoodaccounting", and then the above incident,? What next?

I can't help but feel that just as Peter "jumped the gun" and went straight to us fans on TORN with an "offiicial release" (PR!, and boy did it work), WB and MGM--and maybe NL?--are turning the tables on him here, with his own methods--jumping the gun with an greenlight release before TH location is resolved, possibily shrewdly using our ecsastic reaction to put pressure on Peter to accept anyt demands they might make. Like as preordained location change.

Over the yrs I've coined a bit of a niche for myself as one of the resident skeptics here on TORN.Tongue But sometimes my theories do do come true, Neither Peter nor Guillermo wanted 3D, and now here we have #D. Don't say there was no tension there.

As for walking away...from directing...or what really goes on behind the scenes in NZ...everyone has to sign confidentuialty papers. So to suggest I am consoracy theoring is not not true--we'll never know.

I feel I am doing a public service breinging this up..preparing everyone for possible...next week.

I sincerely hope to God not.

And now, itr is 2 AM here....I really must leasve you all to the party and...good night.

I actually talked to Guillermo tonight

He was at the Chicago International Film Festival to receive an award. We saw The Devil's Backbone, did a Q&A with Guillermo and Ron Perlman, and attended a cocktail reception after the film. During the reception, we all got to speak briefly with Guillermo. We briefly mentioned The Hobbit, and he assured us he is in a better place about the decision he had to make about The Hobbit, and he is convinced that things happen for a reason. He's a geek just like us, and looks forward to the design and concepts from the "new" director.

I think we can let go of any concerns we had about Guillermo being torn up about what is happening with The Hobbit - he is fine. He knows the ins and outs of Hollywood better than we do, and he fully understands that a press release is not a reflection of his contributions to the films.

Guillermo is a lovely man, and I was so glad to be able to spend a few moments with him.

Exactly

In my now reasonably long career as a journalist I have found that press releases are never subtle. You can't do subtle in a press release. You do gushing, bigging up whatever announcement it is you've made. You don't mention any troubles you've had along the way and you can't give the whole history of the deal being announced. Journalists will always put the difficult details in their story anyway - that's their job. The studio's job is to give the good news in a positive way and it's done that well - with even a geeky in-joke, "there and back again" from an exec.

My guess is they'll announce location when the dispute is cleared up. At present, they can't, because it isn't.

One better ....

I went back and had a look at some of my posts in the 'What Say You' Thread discussions - this was prior to GdT taking on the role of Director, but it had just been reported and looked as if it was possible he might Direct - the post date: Jan 29 2008

Quote
Q: Do you think there is a chance or change - that Peter will direct the Hobbit or the other film?

Elven: Yes, I think there will be a change - and unexpected change at that - almost Peter taking the reins by default - though that wouldn't be a bad move closer to the movies becoming a reality, even if they have started filming ... I think it woulld even start with the script ... but Peter steps in to save the day ... we all love a hero who can do that, and he is capable and in the position presently to do that ... but not just yet. I dont think things will go as planned if Del Toro is confirmed as Director.

Q: If you believe it to be true - what do you feel Del Toro will bring to the Hobbit?

Elven: Hold-ups. I dont think this guy has the luck on his side down the line.
Some of this I think relates to timing ... it going to be long overdrawn and there will be difficulties around the making of this movie ... expect the unexpected and irreversable to happen - and I think its out of the hands of anyone to change it ...

Q: Are you happy with this choice?

Elven: as theres no choice yet made, its hard to say - but in essence - No. But thats not to say the right choices wont be made in the long run ...

Q: What are your other thoughts on this current report?

Elven: This seems to be swift decision making - a hopeful new prospect like Del Toro mixed with much antisipation and anxiety.

and I have to say I feel there is some reluctance by Del Toro around this step - (even though there are no reports) with the direction of who is to direct - even if it is confirmed - expectations and all that ... and Im not sure presently if what is being asked of Del Toro is as clear cut as its made out to be - Director ... (title yes, but as for whats expected - no) or exactly what he feels he can bring to the plate himself - . If I said there is a political element involved here, I not sure Id be speculating too far from the truth, but it has to do with skill and creativity, and im sure that these two elements are going to clash at some point ... or one will try to over-ride the other, but these seem only to be half the story - the whole deal would seem very tempting and I think there would be a definite attraction to having a name like his linked to these films ... but Im still feeling that Del Toro will not hold the reins for long ... if this comes through ..

I know there is also a post I wrote about the 'new technology' which would be available at the time the Hobbit comes out - Im still searching for the post - around 2007 - but Im just thrilled as punch that this is how it is evolving now. I wish I'd put a wager on this now ... LOL

Nice to have the green light - its been far to long coming..

Would like to see the next big announcements - like Martin Freeman as Bilbo and they will shoot some scenens in England to accommodate Christopher Lee...

Tow things are bitter sweet - One : We'll never get Del Toro's vision - I for one really wanted another director. I love Peter and I love the LOTR but I thought it would be great to see another vision on middle earth..

Two : I wish it didnt have to be in 3D - plain and simple !

Well you're putting it up there for discussion

so it's fair game.

I'm not sure why you're stressing. You're never, ever going to know if most of these things that you worry about are true or not. It almost begs the question if you find so much behind-the-scenes drama in everything that happens why do you even involve yourself? Why can't this just be a good thing? Does everything have to be so Machiavellian? I mean you go on and on about this and that being done to PJ or GDT - look both of these guys are both happy and rich. Neither one is really a victim worth getting worked up about. You seem like a really nice intelligent person but yes you DO stand out as the resident skeptic. This announcement comes out and everyone is hooray except you. So count me in as the resident stress therapy guy. I mean seriously no snark my suggestion is just enjoy the moment of something going right. I just don't like to see you stress out.

It's simple. Things finally worked out. PJ decided to direct, GDT decided he couldn't wait around. No big deal. It's just life. If they end up filming in NZ great. If not it will still be a great movie. Everybody relax and try to look at some good news and just enjoy it.

I doubt it.

In Reply To
And so you get the feeling now that maybe just as they wanted the "blockbuster franchise guy" for the job, (as opposed to the other Oscar-winner director) adn were willing to (perhaps) manipulate the chips--and oh so patiently, for years--tighening the thumbscrews on Del Toro, perhaps, to pressure him into quitting---even willing to go to the lengths of pulling him off a *Stepehn Spielberg collaberation*--they knew full well the possibilty of a schedule conflict?

I have to tell you, that sounds like one heck of a troll-sized gamble. Secondly, if they were so desperate to have PJ and only PJ direct, I'm sure that would have been part of the terms to begin with, rather than letting PJ and the rest of the studio come to an agreement with GDT. Ultimately the studio has say as to who the major players are in the film, and rather than try and sabotage the production, risking complete obliteration of the project, they could have just flat out said "this is how we want it done, and if it can't be done like that now, we'll just wait until it can."

I'm just not buying the big conspiracy theory that the financial troubles they were going through were the perfect "excuse" for them to pressure GDT out.

Am I sad for what GDT has gone through? You bet. I was excited for the guy, and excited to see his vision for the Hobbit. But I don't think there was any plotting against him in all this. He simply became frustrated with the wrangling that had to be done to get this thing to happen, and decided not to put up with the frustrations and scheduling problems.

The movie business is full of ups and downs. Let's not try and paint GDT as an "unlucky" guy in the movie business - at least not more so than anyone else. He's done very well for himself, and I see a very bright future yet to come for him. He may be suffering through a couple of unfortunate circumstances right now, but I doubt highly that it has anything to do with him personally or professionally. Sometimes it's just the way the ball bounces.

I think the location of The Hobbit production has been decided

I think the location of production has been decided upon already.

In order for The Hobbit to be greenlit, there first needs to be a budget that breaks down the cost of the production. That budget then has to be approved before the greenlight is given.

So now that we do have a greenlight, that means the budget has been signed off. The budget for making a film in NZ is going to be different from making a film in Scotland or Canada or Ireland etc. Different expenses, different tax incentives, etc. all mean different budgets.

I think that makes it pretty clear that the Hobbit budget has to be in line with a particular location(s). It has already been decided on IMHO.

The only question is...where?

Thanks for this entmaiden.

It's great to hear some comments from Guillermo himself. I have two strong impressions of him: He's a gleeful geek, and a thorough gentleman.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

The name "Elven" suits you :)

You have the gift of foresight. Well done, m'dear!

And I'm going to say that I foresee the films will be made in NZ. Between Peter's commitment to do these films now and the film companies counting on them being ultra successful... they'd be foolish NOT to film them in the lands where the first films were made. Everything's in place there. It's going to be fine.

*shakes head* You're awesome :D

you had such a great time! I know you were looking forward to it so much.

Re: 3D

Along with potentially directing the second 3D Tintin film, Peter Jackson also wanted to make King Kong in 3D. PJ is well known to be in the pro-3D camp, I doubt he had to be forced into anything. Not to mention that Weta Digital have proven themselves in regards to making a phenomenal looking 3D film.

GDT

GDT departed the directors chair, but isn't he still on as a co-screenwriter? I know that the scripts have already been finished but they'll certainly be some re-writes? Or does that power to change the script only lie with PJ, FW and PB now? I'm confused Cool

Not really in a position to know at this point

He stated when he left that he was still helping write the scripts but the scripts are done - I would say it's a reasonable guess that PJ, Fran, and PB will do the changes from now on though GDT may be willing to help out if they give him a ring. He's got got other fish to fry though.

I believe that

the producers and directors take control of the scripts though the studio(s own them. In this specific case the situation is complicated by the multiple roles people hold in the production. I think GdT would be consulted about major changes. It would only be polite and who knows when they may be working together again.

That thought doesn't comfort me

Even if they do consult Guillermo about any changes they might want to make to the script, I find it hard to imagine him objecting to anything. He's said that he wouldn't mind even if Peter decided to redesign Smaug...

I'm not sure that Guillermo cares about seeing his work in The Hobbit as much as his fans do.

And despite some (I think minor)complaints I once heard voiced about a few designs in LotR, he has pretty good taste over all.

Honestly

And I've said this before. If nothing else, I want GDT's Smaug to remain 100% intact. Hearing him gush about that particular design gave me chills.

I remember that, while GDT had final say, the design process for The Hobbit was collaborative between GDT and PJ. So I'm assuming/hoping that PJ is happy with the final designs, and that little changes will be made. I'd like to be able to see GDT's influence in the film. In terms of creature design, GDT is one of the best in the business (if not THE best).

GdT's Smaug

I certainly hope Jackson doesn't change it. And I don't think he will... he seemed to like GdT's style enough to select him as the director for The Hobbit, so the odds are if GdT really loves the design, Jackson should too (especially since he, John Howe and Alan Lee presumably had some input on it).

The most important aspect of Smaug's design is the 'thing' Guillermo did with it to make him different from every other dragon on film. That 'thing' absolutely must remain intact, whatever it might be. If it's as good as Guillermo thinks it is, there's no way Peter would mess with it... I hope.

I definitely consider GdT to be the foremost creature designer in the business.

GDT said he was 110% happy with Smaug, and I believe he also said it was the design that they (GDT, PJ, Alan Lee, John Howe, Mike Mignola) spent the most time on. I'm sure they were going for nothing less than perfection with the design. I just hope PJ is as happy with it as GDT was.

I assume...

... that GdT quit TH because of time restraints, so he won't be able to have much more of an input due to his new commitments? Like people have said, he'll probably be contacted re. any changes or major decisions but since he no longer holds the main post I don't think it's overly necessary....
In other news, I'm still jumping for joy, and having PJ confirmed as director is the greatest news I've heard (after the greenlight business) Laugh
