TORN Exclusive: Guillermo Del Toro departs “The Hobbit”

Guillermo Del Toro announced today that he is no longer directing the two movies based on J.R.R Tolkien's "The Hobbit", but will continue to co-write the screenplays. Out of respect to the legions of loyal Tolkien fans, both Guillermo and Peter Jackson wanted to break the news to The One Ring first. They are both committed to protecting The Hobbit and will do everything in their power to ensure the films are everything that the fans want them to be.

"In light of ongoing delays in the setting of a start date for filming "The Hobbit," I am faced with the hardest decision of my life", says Guillermo. "After nearly two years of living, breathing and designing a world as rich as Tolkien's Middle Earth, I must, with great regret, take leave from helming these wonderful pictures. I remain grateful to Peter, Fran and Philippa Boyens, New Line and Warner Brothers and to all my crew in New Zealand. I've been privileged to work in one of the greatest countries on earth with some of the best people ever in our craft and my life will be forever changed. The blessings have been plenty, but the mounting pressures of conflicting schedules have overwhelmed the time slot originally allocated for the project. Both as a co-writer and as a director, I wlsh the production nothing but the very best of luck and I will be first in line to see the finished product. I remain an ally to it and its makers, present and future, and fully support a smooth transition to a new director".

"We feel very sad to see Guillermo leave the Hobbit, but he has kept us fully in the loop and we understand how the protracted development time on these two films, due to reasons beyond anyone's control - has compromised his commitment to other long term projects", says Executive Producer Peter Jackson. "The bottom line is that Guillermo just didn't feel he could commit six years to living in New Zealand, exclusively making these films, when his original commitment was for three years. Guillermo is one of the most remarkable creative spirits I've ever encountered and it has been a complete joy working with him. Guillermo's strong vision is engrained into the scripts and designs of these two films, which are extremely fortunate to be blessed with his creative DNA".

"Guillermo is co-writing the Hobbit screenplays with Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh and myself, and happily our writing partnership will continue for several more months, until the scripts are fine tuned and polished" says Jackson. "New Line and Warner Bros will sit down with us this week, to ensure a smooth and uneventful transition, as we secure a new director for the Hobbit. We do not anticipate any delay or disruption to ongoing pre-production work".

The Hobbit is planned as two motion pictures, co-produced by New Line Cinema and MGM. They are scheduled for release in Dec 2012 and Dec 2013.

This is good news!!!!

Now, PJ can take the seat himself!
I never saw him as the right man to do the job.
OTOH, he's right to depart: years in NZ and not even a green light!

Guillermo's Departure... Edit | Delete | Quote | Reply To This Post
WOW - I don't really know what to say. My only hope now is that Mr Jackson himself decides to pick up the reigns. GDT is truly the only other person I could have imagined making this film happen.

I personally totally understand why he's choosing to leave since he has a massive slate of other films to make so all I will say is Good Luck and thanks for the work you've put in...

and on an entirely selfish note - It may also have bought my new super agent some more time to get me cast! so YAY for that...

Confident that the project will still happen and in the right way. In Peter we must trust...Don't despair people - I have faith.

This is making me incredibly sad :(

Not so much because I worry who they will ask next (I DO worry, but not too much) -- but because I cannot think of any one director I would be happier with than Guillermo whose films I have admired ever since I first saw Devil's Backbone all these years ago.

I was very much looking forward to seeing his vision come alive and I only hope they will come up with another director who has a strong vision and and is able to use Guillermo's work in a good way without trying to simply copy his or PJ's style. That is a very tricky thing and I very much believe it would take a very experienced director to handle it. The only one who comes to my mind right now would be Alfonso Cuaròn, friend and co-producer of Guillermo who has shown that he has a singular filmic handwriting in the past.

This is very sad news for me - still, I believe that sometimes something good can come out of a crisis such as this. I have my fingers crossed for Guillermo, for The Hobbit and its new director!

Wow! Sad, but I wish him luck

I think the thing that makes me the most sad about this is that this had nothing at all to do with the creative team, but is sheerly because of the greenlight delays. Argh. I hate the business end of showbiz. :(

Even the sad goodbye.....faith

Wow! I'm out in othe projects (and cannot finishing my experience here, in TOR) and...this.

Well, I don't want to sound cynical but.....it's the best decision and I'm very happy for Del Toro and even The Hobbit. Del Toro's Hobbit would be awesome. We all know that. But spendng six (or more) years in a project that depends on a studio that is going down...well, that requires a bit more than patient. And, as an artist, having my "next" project for 2013 or 2014....Well....Del Toro let the fans a screenplay in collaboration with Jackson and Walsh and something of a vision. But it's a very, very promising filmmaker who was top of his game back at 2008: too sad for us waiting THAT MUCH for another GDT because he can truly make a coherent and big body of work with Shelley and Simmons materials. Great news for Del Toro fans.

As for The Hobbit.....Peter Jackson is the man. Now is his turn. It's his LoTR. It's his Tolkien New Movie Canon. And we've see him jump beyond the drama (The Lovely Bones) and the comedy (his early years) so a Hobbit adventure based on a more Frighteners meets LoTR tone would be easy for him. It's the end of his incredible fan-hearted journey. The other name is Alfonso Cuarón: has helm the best HP movie to date and seems comfortable working with big projects and is friends with Del Toro. Has a great style and seems a man that slightly adapts to the project.

The financial troubles of MGM have caused all this: Del Toro wanted to be shooting a year ago and not leaving. But Del Toro's work has now options of continuing as a very exciting and personal journey through his artistic and literary influences and The Hobbit can be just reassigned or helmed by Jackson, the man who bring back Tolkien and who defined the definitive movie look of the Middle Earth.

So....

TRUST THE FILMMAKERS!!!!

Arrrrgh!!

I was worried this might happen! I had become so used - and intrigued by - the idea of Guillermo's version of The Hobbit that this development is a blow.

I'm very glad that GDT is staying on with the script, and good on him for taking charge of his destiny and going on with his other projects ... but part of me selfishly thinks this news is a bit stink. :(

I knew he couldn't be able to stick around. He's got way to much other stuff to do. I still don't think PJ will do it though. Say goodbye to the updates too. Unsure
I bet the whole project gets bumped at least another year...if not two.

Well, I'm back...

Had to comment on this sad news.

I completely understand Del Toro's reasons and support him, but I can't help but feel extremely sad that it had to come to this. I hope it is a warning sign to those who can get the wheels moving for these films to actually happen because any delays will screw up the entire project and lose them all of the money it was certain to make worldwide.

But I don't think Jackson will do it either, although anything can happen at this point...

So very sad

Unsure I cant quite believe it. I really feel for Guillermo above all our obvious disappointment as fans of these movies. Who will MGM find to replace him? Cant believe they'll find anyone who was as inclusive as Guillermo, who understood the fans and even posted here as a fan himself. Where do we go from here?

Really sad about this

FrownThis is a shame, and it is all MGM's fault. Guillermo gave us so much of himself. I am very glad his vision will live on in the scripts.
Though I'd love for Peter to direct, I somehow doubt it. Whoever they get better be the same caliber of person that Guillermo and PJ are.

It's a sad day for TORN, and a sadder day for Tolkien fans. Godspeed Guillermo! May all your new projects succeed beyond your dreams!

Terrible News! Fare well in your future endeavors, Guillermo!

Site is crazy, completely frozen. So much traffic. I finally managed to enter, so I wanted to write a smll message, knowing Guillermo will be able to read it.

I'm terribly sorry this dream job could not come to completion. It is very sad that in this world, lawsuits, debt and money can come between a creative man and his craft. This is coming from a person who is making and will make his living in finance. Finance and economics should work to promote human well-being, realization and manifestation of human qualities, such as creativity and art, not the other way around. That said, this is the way our world works, and it's no use in sulking and pointing fingers. Things like this happen. All that is left is being grateful to you, Guillermo, for all the hours spent in a passion that I can now safely say we share, for having the courage and determination to ostentate the banner of fans all over the world, and moving forward with such great project. Guillermo, thank you for sharing diretcly with us, for being so open, and truly making us part of the journey. Henceforward, don't look back, sleep and walk through life doing you did all you could for the project, and that when it finally comes to completion, we, the fans, will reconize, aknowledge and thank you for your print. I respect your decision because I know time is not unlimited, becauseI understand how we, Mexicans, live this kind of things as a family, and the scale of priorities we have. I am incredibly proud that a Mexican has made this kind of work, it gives hope to our fellow Mexicans who live another reality, and don't think we can make it in the highest spheres of international recognition. Thanks for your time, effort and sacrifice, cherish this time, as you have said you have, and move forward knowing you have earned the respect and admiration of legions of Tolkien fans. I assure you your future will continue to be bright. All the best!

For Peter, who I know will also get the message, hope you can take the reins. If you don't, mak sure we Tolkien fans trust you will make a great choic, the same as you made the right one with Guillermo.

Fellow TORnsibs, let's look forward, the road goes ever on and on, let's count on the fact that a great movie will happen, let's support whoever takes the helm, and let us make sure that Guillermo's print in Middle-earth is not forgotten or overseen!

Here's to Del Toro becoming the Irvin Kershner of Middle Earth!

Sad, and angry, and worried

Sad: I'd just begun to get used to and look forward to what GdT could add to The Hobbit, a story we all love, and the film franchise that has been so important over the last ten years. Losing that feels like something has died that hadn't quite had the chance to be born yet.

Angry: I'm mad that political grandstanding, money grubbing and infighting on the part of movie executives are responsible for this. Not creative differences, not a change in focus, but what looks like greed to me. I'm angry for Guillermo. He put a lot of himself into this project, in good faith, and he's gotten screwed over.

Worried: This is a big loss, and it's going to make it harder for the Hobbit movies to go forward. Even with all the trouble there was getting it greenlit, the project was still seen as valuable - one of the most valuable properties MGM still had. The value has definitely been lessened by losing Guillermo, and throwing it all up into the air with no confirmed director might make it easier for skittish suits to kill the whole thing, perhaps for a long time.

Aaarrrrrrrrrrggh!

"That is one thing that Men call 'hope.' Amdir we call it, 'looking up.' But there is another which is founded deeper. Estel we call it, that is 'trust.' It is not defeated by the ways of the world, for it does not come from experience, but from our nature and First Being. If we are indeed the Eruhin, the Children of the One, then He will not suffer Himself to be deprived of His own, not by any enemy, not even by ourselves. This is the last foundation of estel, which we keep even when we contemplate the End. Of all His designs the issue must be for His children's joy."

Over For Me

For me, the likelihood of this film being any good just died. Unlike many people, I don't like the Peter Jackson style. All that pointless excess, tasteless mugging & grimacing for the camera, one tear rolling down a cheek in close up - worse than anything in the most primitive silent film - I could go on and on.

This news ruins the whole project for me. I just can't bring myself to care.

Best of luck to GDT - I'm looking forward to Mountains of Madness & Frankenstein.

That this is just the tip of the iceberg. There are many people who have labored on this project with the hopes of one day getting a paycheck. How many of them will now bail and go to other projects leaving The Hobbit a skeleton with little hopes of recovering?

The Hobbit has a different "feel" from that of LotR, and I had been looking forward to seeing GdT's craftsmanship.

I'm glad he will be finishing the script, but to lose his translating that script to screen...Unsure

This is sad.

I was one who did not think PJ *had* to direct The Hobbit. I thought it would be nice but I was open to other directors and when Guillermo was chosen to work with PJ, I was not unhappy. As I grew to 'know' Guillermo more, as much as one can by hearing how he works and having him interact with fans and address their concerns on TORn's message boards, I came to be more and more happy with the choice. I liked this man and I didn't know what he would do with The Hobbit but I was ready for him to show me.

Having him leave like this is just sad. I felt a heaviness in my heart reading his and PJ's words. I don't know how he feels having to make this decision but I can imagine he feels a fair (if not more) amount of disappointment himself and I feel bad for that too.

I hope that things can get resolved in regards to The Hobbit. I understand that the people who can make things happen don't have any feelings for this movie more than what its earning potential is. And the people who care deeply can do no more than sit and wait with patience for other things to fall into place. If only we could find some way for one team to feel just a part of what the other feels so keenly. Could we gift them with some of the Tolkien magic that seems to leave changed lives in its wake?

Here's a shout out to Guillermo: I am sorry this had to be. I wish you well. I will miss your presence in whatever future this project has.

Ok, this sucks....but!

I think those calling death are jumping the gun a wee bit. Remember, there was a period where the Trilogy was going to get condensed into one film, by Disney. It was originally suppose to be two films. But deals were made, and we got the Trilogy as it is.

Kristin, perhaps you could share a bit of historical perspective. (Love the book, by the by.)

PJ has said a few times that once writing got going, he kinda wished he was directing. Seeing it only in print, it's kinda hard to judge how sincere he was in those remarks or if it just sounded good for the print story. I'm willing to bet the former. I think there is a high chance he ends up doing it. It would allow for the smoothest transition, as he's been just as involved as del Toro has.

If it is to be PJ, I bet we'll learn that sooner rather than later.

If not, I second the Cuaron nomination.

This is very sad news. Mr. del Toro, we understand and we wish you the very best.

This is a truly unfortunate casualty of the MGM story.

Added to this misery is the knowledge that PJ isn't going to pick up the directing reigns, unless he's changed his mind from his earlier comment that he didn't want, essentially, to compete against himself and LotR.

Good grief: if Shay hadn't blocked PJ's way right after LotR, these movies would be ON DVD by now.

I wish Guillermo much success with his other movie plans.

2008 + "six years" = ????

Did you notice what Peter said? "The bottom line is that Guillermo just didn't feel he could commit six years to living in New Zealand, exclusively making these films, when his original commitment was for three years."

Guillermo moved to NZ in 2008. 2008 + "six years" = 2014. So is he saying the likely dates for the movies are 2013 and 2014?

This does not bode well...

No matter what spin you care to place on Mr. del Toro's departure, it is certainly disheartening. The cynic in me (and the cynic that dwells within is quite large and trollish) tells me that GdT's departure was not strictly about 'time' and the expenditure thereof. But I will desist from any rumor-mongering at the moment.

I must say I will certainly miss Mr. del Toro's candor on these boards. And I will really missing seeing GDT's take on Tolkien. I was truly looking forward to seeing the difference between his and PJ's style.

Cast my vote for Alfonso Cuarón. He has my total confidence as a director who can do amazing things with fantasy. PRISONER OF AZKABAN is the finest Harry Potter movie by FAR...

I'm sad

As painful and totally unexpected news as it is, i completely understand Guillermo on this decision. I mean, gimme a break, a whole eternity and nothing going on. No green light and time won't wait and he's still there in NZ. 6 years is a lot to be in one place that's not even your own.

I do hope now that Peter takes over and get this done once and for all.

Really hope the rest of Weta Workshop dont jump ship too..

Living on Cuba Street in Wellington city centre I go to visit the Weta cave every other week.. When I was last there just over a week ago one of the production team mentioned to me that MGM really need to come to an agreement other wise a lot of the talent would have to leave the studio. I certainly didnt expect GDT to be included!! but I totally appreciate the situation. I met him in London last year and he expressed how much he F****** loves living in Wellington so Im sure this is a really low time for him seeing as hes devoted 2 years to the project already.. Ive heard conflicting reports on casting tho.. On one hand I heard back from 3foot7 that extras applications had been flooding in and wont even be looked at for quite some time.. And on the other I overheard someone on Courtney Place last w/e saying how they knew of someone that was going for an audition.. Who knows.. Either way the loss of GDT is terrible news.. Fingers crossed Mr Jackson steps back into the reigns sooner rather than later!!

Two suggestions: Cuaron or Scott

This is truly unfortunate news, to say the least.

However, in the spirit of thinking positively, I would like to submit two directors who I believe could do much justice to this story.

1. Alfonso Cuaron.

And if he is not around:

2. Ridley Scott.

Cuaron's work, from Children of Men, to his take on the Potter Universe, to Y Tu Mama Tambien is phenomenal, and he has an excellent understanding of the reality of the fantastic. Scott, a master of the epic, would likely give us, well, something quite epic!
I urge PJ, Fran, Philippa and GDT to not go the route of choosing a no-name director that will be puppeted by them. Go with someone brilliant and accomplished.

Very sad news

I was shocked when I first read the news, thinking it must be a joke, but no Unsure. Having seen and loved Pan's Labyrinth I was excited to hear Guillermo was to be The Hobbit's director. His enthusiasm and vision for the project, and his accessibility to and for fans through Torn was great to see and be part of. I wish him well in his other projects.

To me, this doesn't bode well for a 'green light' in the near future, which is hugely disappointing and I wonder now just what lies ahead for the whole project.

Dear All-

I intend to post a more lengthy post later in the week. Today is a day where I feel like collecting myself and meditating about all things past present and future. nevertheless I didn't want the day to be over without dropping you all a line. Compa- I did intended to be the Irving K of middle Earth and your "handle" in fact always inspired me to do good. Much of the visual design and previs and creatures etc is likely to survive into the final movie, so, I'll be delighted to see the final film and trust that the right director will step in into this massive endeavour.

I will drop by soon enough and I want to thank you all for the kindness, wrmth and wisdom you have shared with me.

No, lets not hope that

I do not want PJ to take the reins. We got 9 hours of PJ's Middle Earth and it is time for someone else to give it a shot. The dream choice would be Alfonso Cuaron, IMO. He would both present a strong (and brilliant) vision, while respecting GDT's and PJ's work thus far.

Best of luck, GDT

Apart from my frustration with the delays that seem to have brought about GDT's departure, as well as the disappointment that I will apparently never see his full vision for The Hobbit brought to the screen, I am awestruck by the class with which GDT has handled himself from moment one of his involvement. His humility, his respect for the source material, as well as his willingness to reach out to the fans, seemed to make him a perfect fit for the project. Alas, it is not to be, but there doesn't seem to be an ounce of resentment or finger pointing in his press release. He seems to feel truly honored to have made his imprint on the movie, and gives it his full blessing going forward. I tip my hat to him and wish him the best.

A loss

I will not say that nobody else can do the job or that two "Hobbit" films will not be of great interest to me when they play before my eyes (eventually) in the cinema.

It is comforting that scripts are finished and that GDT's stamp will be on the films.

However, I will always mourn not seeing Guillermo del Toro's "Hobbit". I am confident he had great things in store for us.

Another loss that I am feeling is that no director will ever be as generous to our community as GDT was with us here these past couple of years. His participation in dialog on these pages and his lack of pretense and his interest in speaking to and with fans in unfiltered conversation was meaningful to me on a personal level.

I don't mean that I have delusions that he was my friend but I claim with no hesitation that he was our friend and was one of us (although a remarkable one of us.)

He already directed one of my favorite films and I will continue to watch his career but now with affection for the creator.

As far as I am concerned he is part of the TORn family and will continue to report on his creative efforts. All is not lost on the Hobbit films but we have absolutely suffered a loss. I will always wonder about HIS unmade Hobbit movies.

And of course we wish him all success in all things.

I have no choice but to believe in free will.

Mr. Del Toro

I want to thank you for all of the work you've invested in this project over the last two years. I don't mean to sound like a brown-noser, but you really were THE guy I wanted for this project, and I continue to stand by that. However, I understand you have other commitments/projects that you'd like to get underway (Hellboy 3, Frankenstein, and At the Mountains of Madness to name a few). And while I would love nothing more than for you to direct these films, I very much look forward to your future work.

I'd also like to thank you for dropping by every now and then and talking to us fans. It really is a testament to your character.

I'm very sorry that it's come to this. Obviously it's out of everybody's hands, but it really is an absolute shame. I guess all I can do is hope and pray that most of your design work remains intact in the final version, since I am a huge fan of your aesthetic eye. This is especially true for Smaug. Your comments on his design especially had me grinning from ear to ear.

All I can say is thank you for the work you've done, good luck with your future endeavors, and all the best.

Oh, no!

I am so sorry for reading ths news! I thought the films would be great not only because they are "Tolkien", not only because the scripts are written by the same guys as LOTR, but also because Mr. del Toro was directing them. And he was so excited about this. But he is wright to leave the project, he has others to take care of.
All I hope, now, is that PJ will direct the films. Alfonso Cuaron could be a good choice too, "The Prisoner of Azkaban" is my second favourite HP movie (after "The Chamber of Secrets").

Thank you, Mr. del Toro for everything you have done for Middle Earth, for us, fans of Middle Earth and take good care in the future! Good luck! Smile

I couldn't bring myself to pen down any of the thoughts that have been running through my head...

... since I read the news this morning. I've been pondering about a lot of things, not all of which can be said in a public forum without me running the risk of exposing my most sentimental side.

Guillermo, or GDT, as I've learned to call you, I don't know you personally, but I do really feel like I "know" you. That probably makes no sense, but I suppose you do have an inkling of what I'm trying to convey.

To go back a few years, let me say that I hated the idea of someone other than PJ directing these films. After the months of uncertainty, you finally came on board, and I had no idea what to expect of you - you were the "wild card" on this project.

But over these couple of years you've shared with us not just your vision for The Hobbit but also your notion of fantasy and how fantastical creatures can come to embody human traits both at their best and worst. Before long, I was no longer afraid for The Hobbit. Yes, I was cautious about my expectations, but I also came to trust in you to make these the best films they could be. I became a believer.

This morning I feel a strange sense of loss - strange because I ask myself "How can you feel like you've lost something you never had?" And I'm telling myself "No. I did have GDT. We did "have" GDT. He was not only THE director, one whom I no longer felt was imposed on me but one whom I wanted to see make these films... no, he was OUR friend". We none of us have seen what you've done with these films thus far, and our only contact with you has been via these boards, and sheesh! I will miss that. You're a funny guy GDT, your posts could have lightened our hearts at the worst of times, and yet they had a certain gravity that gave us little glimpses into the brilliant person that you are.

I don't know where and how to end this post. Nothing I've said seems enough, nor will be. I'm not angry, not frustrated, not... nothing! Today I want to be silent, I want to be by myself. I don't feel anything. I feel... numb! I wonder if you know that feeling...

So, so sad

What a piece of news to wake up to...

I was another one who wanted Peter Jackson to direct 'The Hobbit' at first, but over the months I've come to share the excitement that many of us here felt about seeing Guillermo's vision of the story brought to life on film. To see it come to this is heart-wrenching for us, for you and the creative team in New Zealand it must be devastating.

You put it so well.

I hope now that Peter Jackson or one of the creative team in New Zealand will take over the directing, not least because anyone from outside would now have to take on so much of someone else's creative vision, with all the design work already done and Peter, Fran, Philippa and Guillermo on the script. We just have to keep hoping - but this is a sad morning.

Hear, hear MrC! I agree with every word.

It is a shock to read such news - a bolt from the blue - but I suppose when one thinks about it, it isn't entirely surprising that the extended time period should create problems. Actually just this past weekend I was pondering if, given how much the project has been delayed and how much the political landscape of the movie companies involved has changed over the past few years, PJ himself would have started wishing he was making the films after all... So much has changed since that first announcement that GDT would direct.

I don't despair for the movies at all - with PJ as producer, they are in safe hands. I do, like you MrC, wish we had got to see GDT's Middle Earth. That's a place I'd like to visit. Frown

Sir, you are a gentleman and we wish you much success in future endeavours...

Thanks for being such a friend to TORn throughout this process. I can only try to imagine what a difficult decision this must have been for you. Sad as we all are to miss YOUR Hobbit, that sadness must be a hundred times more for you, and for all the folks who have been working with you and have been, no doubt, inspired by your vision. You must be feeling torn in two, like Sam - wanting to follow your Hobbit vision but needing to stay with other projects you love too.

In traditional TORn style, may I offer you {{hugs}} at this time?! Wink Seriously, as we all react with surprise to this news, please know that much good energy and thanks are sent your way. You have been an amazing friend to us and we hope that you will continue to feel at home in this community. As MrCere wrote below, you're one of us now, and we will always follow your creativity with interest - and, it it's not too presumptuous, a little pride! Smile It's reassuring to know that your voice will still be heard, through the script and through design concepts, in the final films. And I am sure that the projects which need your attention, and which draw you away, will be wonderful and exciting too. I look forward to them.

Fuzzy Math????

The Grey Wanderer says, So that is still consistent with a 2012/2013 distribution...later than I would have liked, but beggars can't be choosers.
(2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 = six years).

That seems logical on the surface, but compare it to the original three year commitment.

(2008, 2009, 2010) would not be enough to cover the originally planned dates of 2010 and 2011 (which were quickly changed to 2011/12).

Guillermo moved to NZ in the second half of 2008, so his commitment in NZ must have originally been until the second film was ready late in 2011, which would be a little over three years. (2008-2009, 2009-2010, 2010-2011)

Since Guillermo did not move to NZ until the second half of 2008, you cannot count the whole year. Your method would be almost like saying that because a person began college in 2005 and graduated in 2009, he was in school five years.

Best wishes

Mr. Del Toro,

Since I may never have the chance to speak to you again (the world is big and my voice is small), I'd like to extend my best wishes for you as your career continues. I was introduced to you through an interview on NPR a few years ago, and I had to pull off to the side of the road to give it my full attention, since your discussion of lovely monsters, your childhood, and your father's abduction was so compelling. I rushed home to rent (and later purchase) Pan's Labyrinth, and I was enthralled. It was beautiful, beautiful work, and it sparked in me a renewed imagination. When I learned you would be directing the two Hobbit films, I was overjoyed. While it is disheartening to see you leave the project, I've already taken much from your involvement in "my world." So I'd like to say thank you, both for your inspiring personal narrative, your past work, and for future films that exist only as inklings in your mind. May you have all the grand nightmares you deserve!

Cheers,
CW

So ends the chance for something extraordinary ...

Look, I’m sure when and if these films get made they will be ‘good’. Good enough. They’ll segue into the original films competently enough, they’ll have the odd bravura scene of stunning sfx. But deep down, we all know The Hobbit lucked out when Guillermo took this on. I can’t think of a more perfect choice of director ticking all three boxes of: a) an innate understanding of horror & fantasy b) soulful reverence to the source material and c) artistic vision; and as much as I don’t want to put a dampener on where things go from here, I can’t help it either, because sadly you won’t get that combination again. Two out of the three, maybe. Two & a half, at a push.

As for the replacements being touted? Jackson, on present form I’m not convinced could match his trilogy, nor would he want to as he's said countless times he sees no satisfaction in competing with himself. Cuaron, a huge talent in his own right, should not become "second dibbs" and as a close friend of Del Toro would forever be a reminder of the man he had replaced; nor is he, first and foremost, a fantasy director. And Scott? He’s got the minor matter of an Alien prequel to attend to in case anyone’s forgotten, or hasn’t recently made a trip out to the multiplex to sit through Robin Hood …Unsure

My money goes on Raimi. His visual style of late, especially in the phenomenally rewatchable Drag Me To Hell reminds me more of earlier Peter Jackson than anything: the gross-out horror, askew camera angles, wondrously OTT theatrics. He’d nail the Mirkwood spiders and give the movies ample scares. He’s also a director who, for the most part (Spidey 3, excepted) balances character and big spectacle action well. So perhaps, (i.e: a BIG perhaps, and still one hoping that McGuire gets nowhere near the Bilbo gig) what with the unhappy severance from the Spiderman franchise, this could be his triumphant return to the big blockbuster arena? We shall see.

For all the inevitable conjecture about who’ll eventually take over, I’d also like to celebrate the simple fact of Guillermo’s artistic vistas widening overnight. That’s a massive plus for all of us. It means that he’ll be free to pursue the smaller scale projects AND the bigger ones, the intimate and the outrageous, the Lovecraft and the madness, and I’ll be cheering him on with the certainty I know him slightly better than before the Hobbit debacle, and I’ll tell you why: A couple of months (or few pages back) ago, I made a (slightly) narky post likening the interminable delays to Groundhog day. I wasn’t fully up to speed with the MGM situation either, so when Guillermo showed up in the thread, I could have reasonably expected a tongue-lashing for a bout of fanboy petulance, not least for the factual inaccuracies.

Instead, GDT expressed his empathy. His empathy with us, when the one who deserved it most was him. Might seem trivial, but I’ll always remember that as the mark of the man, and in many ways because of it, I’ll always wish him ten times more love, best wishes ( & empathy) in future personal projects we all know will be weird wonderful expressions of that unique creative mind. Here’s to hoping that creature notebook of his is soon bursting at the seams again. Heres’s to raising up the glass. And here’s to saying without a word of dewy eyed hyperbole The Hobbit just lost a towering talent - and soul.

Gods (and monsters) bless him in everything he does.

Damien, England.

so many thanks

Thank you so very much for all the effort you have expended on this project that you will not now be able to complete. I am saddened to read of your decision, but not at all surprised. You can't stand still - you have too many other wonderful movies to make. With all of the pre-pre-production work you have put in, here's hoping some of it will survive.

Most of all, I want to thank you for being "one of us". Every time I opened "Move Discussion - The Hobbit" I looked for your name to see if we had another juicy tidbit or update. I will certainly miss the connection you established with us, true fans of Tolkien's works.

I wish you all the best on your next projects.

My heart goes out to Guillermo and the entire Hobbit team

I have watched them put all their energy and passion into making wonderful films, and I'm sure all are feeling devastated by the decision. Guillermo, I can only imagine how difficult it was to leave, and I wish you all the best of luck. I'm so glad you were and are part of the writing team and look forward to your story.

As MrCere said, you are one of us now, and hope you can continue to be part of the TORN community. I have enjoyed your contributions very much.

So perhaps now he will have the time

to further contribute to TORn? (see question L)

Seriously speaking, I am no greta movie-goer, and I have absolutely no opinion on the artistic quality of either Guillermo or any of the names thrown about as possible replacments. But I did like very much the idea of GDT working together with Jackson on The Hobbit, as a good balance between the need for continuity and the need for a different flavour. I hope something similar might still work out.

But I feel acutely the blow to one of the most valued members of the TORn community, one who in his posts here has shown generosity, intelligence and creativity. And I appreciate very much his kindness in thinking of us on this day. Knowing next to nothing of him as a director, I have the greatest regard for him as a person. Sharing this community with him is not just a treat but a honour.

Keep well, Guillermo. Good luck in whatever you do next. And please consider TORn as your home.

A fair warning: I am a nitpicker by taste, talents and profession.

"When Tolkien took me off on the big adventure I was enthralled. By the time he brought me back. I had returned home from Viet Nam and things had changed... at last things looked like they were going to change for the better. But my little town was gone. It was part of the world now."

From the first moment

i heard Guillermo was to direct the hobbit , i believed he would deliver a masterpiece because middle earth really was a place where he could develop all his wondrous talent...
Today's news is a huge blow to a series of ill and unfortunate surprises that this project holdsFrown.
It's hell of a bad luck to have all these obstacles during the hobbit's creation! I wish Guillermo finished these movies but now with his departure hope for two special movies is diminished..

I don't know where and how to end this post. Nothing I've said seems enough, nor will be. I'm not angry, not frustrated, not... nothing! Today I want to be silent, I want to be by myself. I don't feel anything. I feel... numb! I wonder if you know that feeling...

Earl, reading your post felt like I was sitting through a eulogy and having been to a funeral recently, I again have that feeling of extreme sadness of loss, but fighting as hard as I can to not show any emotion as tears run down your face anyway. I feel sorry for whoever follows GDT. I think most fans will intrinsically dislike any replacement, (besides PJ) and we will always be left with wondering what could have been...because it would have been brilliant to be sure. I feel cheated.

Oh no... What a harsh twist

for a very committed and excited soul. Peter, Philippa, Fran and he had become a dynamo team to me. This is shockng! How he and they must have agonized; but how classy for them to think of us as this time. *bows deeply*

My second thought while trying to get my head around this, is that I hope Fran, Philippa and Peter will take on the directing. I KNOW I KNOW that Peter would prefer not to... but so many of the people in his filmic family who brought LotR to the screen are still there and know how to do Middle-earth so well. Peter wouldn't be starting from square one and overcoming so many hurdles every step of the way.

This is so sad. It's too bizarre and incredible not to have a reason for it. I've always found when doors slam shut like this, you have to keep your mind and heart open and just listen to that small voice inside so you can see other doors open and possibilities presenting themselves. This is too huge not to have a reason for it.

Take care, Mr. del Toro. I'm so sorry for this. I was excited to see what you had in store for us!

Peter... please consider directing. Please.

*tearing* You can't say fairer than that...

I'm so sorry for this heartbreak... not just for the films... but for your family and for you personally. I've moved several times in my lifetime, and it's so hard on the children. This isn't your fault. Life puts demands on us and we have to do what we know is right for the family. You're doing that, and I'm so impressed.

Thank you for your love and enthusiasm for this project. I'm so glad you're still going to be involved to whatever degree... and I'm delighted that we'll still see your dreams for the film will still be there for us to share with you. And thank you for your respect for us... for keeping us involved and feeling like we're a part of the project... which we are because of your generosity and for Peter's.

You did good. You're forever a member of this filmic Fellowship, imho... and of TORn. Don't be a stranger even though things have changed. It doesn't mean it's over :)

*warm hug* Peace, sir. It's okay.

What a gut-wrenching decision this must have been

Having had the privilege of having small glimpses into the depth of your intellect, character and emotion, I have no doubt that you looked at this long and hard, from every possible angle, and made the only decision you could have made. One of my favorite sayings is: "Life is what happens when you're making other plans" (which can be bad, but it can also be very, very good). It isn't surprising that life was moving on and that, resist as you might, you eventually had to move with it.

Your life will eventually move on from The Hobbit, and you will have many successes down the road. But know that you've made a very valuable and important imprint on the movie, on TORn and on our hearts. As others have said, you are, and will remain, a dear member of our community, and always welcome here.

Blessings to you and your family,

Altaira

I will always hope GdT ...

Dear Guillermo –
How can I ever express the immensity of what you have given to us all here on tORN – the enormity of your generous soul, your shining enthusiasm and passion, the glimpses of hope you shared, the grasps of your extraordinary visions that kept us talking for weeks & years, your vitality and excitement in looking forward to creating the Hobbit, your cheek and humour, your devotion and dedication... *sigh –This news... it feels like someone punched a hole in my heart, I feel sad, like losing a friend whose visit was too short, a silent mentor... life throws us all some amazing twists and turns - this is one of them.

Personally, I wanted to say thank-you for being such an inspiration, and a allowing us all to take the ride with you through this part of The Hobbits journey. Thank-you for the respect and affection you showed for Tolkien’s work and to all of us fans here. I know your stamp will be in the scripting so not all is lost. You’ll always be a Tornsib to me, to us, always part of the family. I hope you pop in every now and again to tORN after the dust settles –heck, otherwise we will miss your wit and charm.

I will though remain optimistic, I put a little pocket of hope aside – my hope is that there is the chance that you will consider some Directorship involvement in the Hobbit/s down the track, just one Hobbit film, and I will still be looking for your cameo appearance – I really did want to see you running around in the background with your shirt over your head... and I will be looking forward to seeing your larger than life creative signature throughout the films, especially Smaug. There lie my hopes.

I’m not going to say ‘good-bye’ – but I am going to wish you every future success, a field full of dreams realized, every opportunity to be laid at your feet, a wealth of happiness, and the luck of the Hobbits.
Bless you, you rascal! Wink

Links to pertinent entries on Doug Adams' blog

I thought some of you might want to read some of Doug's entries on this matter. First, he has some peripheral connection with the production of both LOTR and The Hobbit (through his association with Howard Shore). Second, he suffered his own setback last fall when legal issues that needed to be hashed about between various entities not only stalled his book project (discussing the music of the LOTR films) but almost killed it completely. I thought of how hard that was for him and extrapolated that immediately onto what Guillermo must be feeling.

I can't get the link feature nor Basic Editor to load and the links directly to the blog entries are too long to post as raw links (TORn tends to shorten them, making them non-functional).

So... visit the main page: http://themusicofthelordoftheringsfilms.blogspot.com/

and look for three blog entries (with comments from followers):
  • The Departure of Del Toro - in which Doug posted the press release for his followers to read when TORn went down
  • The Departure of Del Toro Pt. 2 - in which Doug links to the deadline.com article that maintains PJ will not direct The Hobbit
  • A Fool's Hope - in which Doug gets personal and shares some of his experience with the issues his book faced, how hard it is to feel one is disappointing fans, and how good things can come from the worst circumstances. - a definite read, IMO.

No more TORn insider for the Hobbit ???

While I don't really have any opinion about how GTD would have done making the film(s), I'm really more concerned that we've lost the "insider". Will whoever is selected as director be as forthcoming here on TORn about events/details/whatever as they happen? I think that is the greater loss here. :(

How did it come to this?

Lament For Eorl The Young
Where now is the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the hand on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow;
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow.
Who shall gather the smoke of the deadwood burning,
Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?

I just spit out my Honeycomb cereal!!!

I'm absolutely dumbfounded. I don't think there will be another director like Del Toro for us. I, like so many others, was amazed at how humble he was with us here at TheOneRing forums and I'm just crushed. I feel grateful, however to have had him with us for what short a time it was. You will be missed, mate. Good luck with ALL your future endeavors.

Below is a copy and paste of the email I sent to MGM upon reading this news this morning. Thanks to Shadow and Flame for the link! I encourage ALL here on the forums to flood this email account IMMEDIATELY! We need to be heard!

comments@mgm.com

Dear Sirs, The recent news of Mr. Del Toro leaving the Hobbit project has left me absolutely sick. He will be terribly missed and the world will have to miss out on what could've been a truly wonderful set of films. I'm absolutely disgusted with the apparent greed that has shown itself here. I speak for myself, but I know that there are literally LEGIONS of Tolkien fans out there that are of like mind and are equally upset about this unfortunate turn of events. How shameful! This represents a failure to acknowledge the value of the creative side of the business. I realize that MGM is in massive debt, but didn't WB offer a good enough deal for you people? The Hobbit films stand to make a killing at the box office (if they ever get made, that is), so why have the films not been given a greenlight already? Seriously, what is the hold-up? Websites like TheOneRing.net are literally locked up with internet traffic because of this news. There are millions of fans out there that have been waiting (very patiently, I might add) for SOMETHING to happen. Please, if you have ANY love for the art and the films that you make (and not just the money that you make), PLEASE consider ALL of the options you have on the table for these films. You are sitting on a gold mine here. We all know that the James Bond franchise has been put on hold indefinitely, so The Hobbit film project is all you have now. Please, don't screw up the one trump card you have left.

Or we could be more mature than that

and send a *polite* message hoping that MGM doesn't lose more of the talent - artists, technicians - through more delays. Let's show that Tolkien fans are of a higher calibre than a petulant mob.

I don't forget that it was MGM who kept Peter in the game when Shaye barred him from having anything to do with New Line or its products ever again. The company is trying to find a deal that will work, and I have everything crossed that a good solution will come quickly.

It's not about us

There are hundreds of people working on the films who are dealing with a significant loss, and Guillermo had to make a life-changing decision that he really, really did not want to make. Losing our occasional insider glimpses into the films is a minor issue compared to what these folks are dealing with.

MGM is in bankruptcy

which means that the Courts are approving all decisions. MGM is not necessarily the bad guy here - if anything, it's their creditors who refuse to accept the deals that have been offered.

In reality, there are no bad guys in this scenario. Everyone involved is trying to find the best solution that works for as many interested parties as possible.

I realize that we are all disappointed, but despite knowing a lot about what's been happening, we don't know everything. Pointing fingers might make us feel better for the moment, but the solution won't get here any faster.

Why should we harass MGM?

I can appreciate people being disappointed, but it's MGM's creditors who are determining things now, and sending angry e-mails isn't going to bring GDT back. It's only going to make Tolkien fans look ignorant and immature. If there's something substantive to be said we can do so politely.

Sad but not a total loss

I'm with you BlueMan, it's very disheartening to have GDT leave The Hobbit. I thought he was the perfect choice for this project, a visionary with talent, and I think he would have been more resistant to including typical Hollywood-style gimmicks (e.g. Legolas action sequences). Cuaròn is a very good guess imo and would certainly fill the shoes well. While I would love to see PJ reprise his Director role, more so I would like to see another passionate and creative Director take the helm and I think Jackson would rather find another Director as well. Replacing GDT won't be easy, I just hope the films survive the process.

Sad, Sad, Sad

I remember being so happy when I found out Guillermo had been chosen to direct the Hobbit, that I guess it's normal being so sad at his departure.

I mean, it's not the end of the world, but directors who truly immerse in the world they're creating (or re-creating for that matter) and that protect the source as much as Guillermo does with all his projects are hard to find. If you add that to the fact that he takes time to keep us posted about things, that he seems to be a wonderful human being and that he does the most incredible pictures I've seen in the last few years, then the chances to find someone similar are near impossible. I hate the fact that we're probably going to be ever wondering how the movie would have been if Guillermo had directed it.

The only thing positive about this is that maybe Guillermo will get to direct Hellboy 3, Saturn and the End of Days, Drood and maybe At the Mountain of Madness.

Regarding other directors, Peter is of course my first choice, and probably the only choice that would diminish the feeling of losing someone like Guillermo.
I don't like Sam Raimi, I don't think the Spider-Man movies are standing the pass of time that well, although it is true that his style seems to be close to Peter's. I would go with Alfonso Cuaron, or maybe JJ Abrams.

Guillermo, I wish you the best of luck for all your future endeavours, with the full knowledge that they're going to be great and that I will hopefully be there to watch them (or read them :)

And just one little thing, If a Silmarillion movie ever gets made, please remember to come back to Middle Earth.
Maybe it won't be Smaug but Glaurung the dragon you can put on our screens.

Many thanks, Guillermo

First of all, I have to say I'm totally understanding and respecting his decision, but at the same time I'm really sad, because in his posts you could feel his enthousiasm for this movie project when you're reading between the lines, so I'm certain he would have made TH an awesome and epic movie. I probably might have done the same thing if I were standing in his shoes, but when you're considering all the work, time and effort he has put into the preproduction of TH, wouldn't it be better if he might reconsider his decision? I know, it will be highly unlikely he would ever do that, and I understand his commitment to the other movies he also has to make, but I wonder, when he's looking back on his life in a few decades time, wouldn't he regret it big time he has made this decision to retreat as the director of The Hobbit? It's not too late to reconsider ( Wishful thinking...Blush) When TH will eventually be made, it almost for sure will be one of the most iconic movies in movie history, and if he would have been the director of it, he will always be remembered for that. Other movies he will make probably will also be something special, as he is a great director, but TH is a movie that's on beforehand "an epic and classic movie".

'This might be strange to say, but I'm really hoping the green light for TH will not come within the next few weeks, otherwise it would give me the feeling they have waited on purpose until GdT has retreated as director (I know, ofcourse, that's not the case).

Anyway, there are two things I'm afraid of:
- The first one is that the time they need for finding a new director who might also want to rewrite the script to match his personal style, will cost a lot of time, maybe even delaying the release of TH with one, two or even more years...Unsure

- The second one is that cast and crew involved in TH or have an agreement to sign a contract as soon as there's a green light, like Ian McKellen, will also decide to retreat , because of their age, their roles in other film projects, tired of waiting, etc

When TH eventually is made, we probably will always ask the questions: What if Guillermo would have made TH, and how would GdT's version have been compared with the version of the new director, but ofcourse those are questions that probably will never be answered...

I'm really hoping that in the "behind the scenes of TH" on the DVD that eventually will come out, we will see his work, his enthousiasm and how he was involved in the preproduction of TH, as some kind of tribute to Guillermo.

I'm wishing you all the best with your future projects, and want to thank you for all you have done. I hope you'll keep visiting the boards every now and then in the (near) future!

I agree

- that is, I agree that it's not the end of the world. And, as Eldorion says, no-one has died
(I'm glad to say). Though the way Quickbeam began his podcast, I was beginning to wonder. But anyway; that's show-business, and life goes on. But there is one thing I'd like to mention -

"And just one little thing, If a Silmarillion movie ever gets made, please remember to come back to Middle Earth. "

The film rights to The Silmarillion belong not to the film-makers (thank goodness) but to the Tolkien family; and, as I don't suppose they will be selling them off any time soon, Mr del Toro would have a very long wait.

totally bummed

heard this a couple hours ago and could not access TORn....am so bummed, because they were ready to roll and freakin' MGM's roadblock.....ahhhhh.....I can only imagine how frustrated GDT and PJ and company have been....my sister just visited Hobbiton and saw the work being done....I can totally understand GDT's schedule getting screwed by the MGM situation, and think he's great to stay involved with scripts and stuff....I hope if PJ directs eventually that we will see GDT's influences on screen.....and the good news is that PJ could direct...its one thing for GDT to pull up stakes and move to NZ, but PJ and company live there so no problem waiting it out, UNLESS that also conflicts with PJ's schedule.....ahhhhhhhh heck....crossing fingers.....swearing on the precious...

I raise a glass of ale to all, and thank everyone for their efforts on The Hobbit....thanks GDT

This is just a ..what's that "cat" word?A concatenation of bad events which culminates in The Hobbit being pushed back even further and the directorial loss of a talented person who was kind enough to come here and befriend us. I know this decision was difficult. I wish him much further success.

To Guillermo Del Toro

It was with much excitement that I received the news that The Hobbit would be made after the unfortunate events that occurred between New Line Cinema and Peter Jackson.

While not surprised (in light of the well documented MGM situation), I am greatly saddened to see that you will NOT be directing The Hobbit films. When I had heard that Peter Jackson was looking for a director, you were honestly the first name that came to mind. I was extremely happy to hear that he not only wanted you to direct, but also to write for the film. You are undoubtedly one of the most intelligent and visually stunning story tellers of our time.

I have enjoyed watching all of your films (and will continue to do so) as well as continue to read about your creative approach, enjoy your sketches, listen to your dvd commentaries; you are truly a creative force in the world.

I humbly admire you and have no doubt for your future success.

A sincere thanks for the time and effort you and your family have given.

And wish none of it happened, but as a wise wizard once said:

There are other forces at work in this world besides the will of mgm. Maybe GdT was meant to just write the hobbit and PJ was meant to direct it. And that is an encouraging thought.Wink

Message for Guillermo

Of course not.

When people are in shock, they often react to the more petty and personal details. But not having an insider on board is absolutely the least bothersome part of this mess.

I am absolutely gutted! For me Guillermo was the perfect director and i was REALLY looking forward to seeing his vision of Middle Earth!
I completely understand his reasons for leaving the project....my anger..rage...is directed at MGM!!! How do i contact them so's i can let them know what i think of them? Don't worry, i'll not mention TORN!
I wish Guillermo all the best for the future and will definitely be keeping at least one eye out for his films!
In the mean time, can anyone offer me some counselling or even just a few words of consolation to ensure me that all will be well with this film? Because right now i'd not be surprised if a lot of the people involved were about to move on to more immediate employment!

Didn't see that coming!!!

I can understand though, with all time it's taken up and nothing is yet set in stone. I was intrigued to see his vison of ME (but was slightly worried when I watched Hellboy - I'm not the biggest fan) but glad he's staying on to finish the script etc, and he's been so good to us all! Worried now about the choice of new director though, there are few out there who could carry off Tolkien's vision - although I'm liking the suggestion of Alfonso Cuaron! PJ obviously didn't want to direct before so not sure if he'd do it even now Crazy Although he's totally the perfect choice Wink
I regret to say that I think we must all remain confused/uncertain for a while....

Yes, it's not about us -- but that wasn't my entire point...

I see more recent news that PJ may in fact take over " if it becomes the only way to ensure the US$150 milliom ... film is made". I do hope he gets to direct, otherwise I fear that some other director will be found without the same passion for Tolkein, and likewise has no desire/concern for fans like us - but instead just wants to make a Hollywood-ized blockbuster. :(

I figure that by having someone that would communicate with us, it would also mean they would 'listen' to us (as far as they legally could) and we would get the best possible movie. My calling such a person 'an insider for TORn' is just a simple way to express that having such a connection can only mean goodness to the picture. The fact that we get little inside tidbits was just a fringe benefit.

Unless...

Unless PJ picks up the pieces, I don't see the point of it continuing. Both he and GDT loved the books and "got it" when it came to middle earth. What chance is there of another director having that same love and understanding of the material? I don't think some of the folks here realize what has been lost. I don't want these movies to happen just to have something hit the screen. If the right people are not involved there's just too big a chance of having something lame.

Probably for the best.

Wasn't a big fan of his Labyrinth movie - especially the decision to cast David Bowie as the Goblin King.

Given his track record of delivering projects on time and within budget, and with the minimum of fuss, I don't think there is any alternative to bringing in Terry Gilliam.

Six years, instead of three?

In Reply To
...says Executive Producer Peter Jackson. "The bottom line is that Guillermo just didn't feel he could commit six years to living in New Zealand, exclusively making these films, when his original commitment was for three years. ...

Could someone help me understand how this 6-year commitment maps out? I've probably missing something along the way... Is it because when he originally committed to the project, it was only going to be one film, and now having a second film added was part of that extension to 6-years? Or, was he seeing continued delays (that couldn't be commented on publicly?), on the order of 3+ years (!!)... :-(

Oh no!!!

Well if I were in his shoes I wouldn't leave the hobbit if you paid
me! But I do understand his reasons for going, my only worry is
that if the filmmakers (or who ever picks the director) pick someonewho's ideas or visions don't exactly collaborate well with the input that GDT has had, it will make for a somewhat muddled film. I'm very sure that my fears are unfounded though, because the mostlikely person (I think) to be put up for the job it peter Jackson, andi know That for me the way he made the lotr films was amazing and
I think that if he does them the same way again, they will be just as
good (or maybe even better) than the lotr films.
I don't think that noone else can do the job as well as pj or gdt, there
are plenty of brilliant directors out there, but I just think that if we
can't have peter jackson then we should have GDT and if we can't have
him we should have peter Jackson, if we can't have either of them then
they should all have a good look around and see who will do the job well, and put their own stuff into it, but still keeping sort of parallel to the ideas that all the writers had whilst developing the script.

I know we were all wanting some big news, but not this kind!

First time I've been able to get on the site since the news broke -- I guess that's good for TORn's traffic count...

I did manage to check some other sites, though, that follow GDT's works -- it made me feel better to read comments from many folks who are happy that this will now allow GDT to focus on some films they've been waiting for just as eagerly as we've been wanting to see the Hobbit. So, some other great films will be made by him instead, for people who are waiting for them, and that's not a bad thing..

I was not very familiar with GDT's works, but he did win me over with the way he responded to all of us here, and convinced me that he had an approach to the Hobbit that made sense and would be an intriguing take on the tale. I'd love to see him keep hanging around here, too, but that's probably unlikely of course. I liked his energy -- at times very clear, at times teasing, and serious and lighthearted at the same time. No wonder he seemed so right for the Hobbit!

When I think of all the setbacks LOTR had, and the way that all worked out, that gives me hope for the same in this case as well. And maybe we'll eventually see a GDT Hobbit remake -- after all, Jackson finally got to do his King Kong. So if this a story he's meant to tell, I'd like to think that might happen yet, somewhere down the road.

Release Dates

Well, I'm impressed with TheOneRing.net for breaking this! They've been mentioned by every major news organization this week and should be proud.

Anyway, I must admit I have not read all 150 posts here, but something in the news stories caught me eye: they said The Hobbit movies are going to be released in 2012 and 2013. The interesting thing is that I don't think there's ever been an official announcement regarding this. We were originally told that the films would be released 2011 and 2012, though we've sort of gotten hints since (and assumed) the films would be delayed. It's interesting that as this newer, bigger news (about del Toro) has hit, the release date situation has been forgotten or overlooked (by the mainstream media, not by you guys.) My guess is the 2012 and 2013 dates are just target dates and there won't be an official announcement until the film has a greenlight. Kind of weird the media would be reporting them like they are.

There is no director, the cast has not been announced and there is a big question mark regarding funding from the studio.

I am thinking 2013 and 2014, the same conclusion Mark Sommer came to earlier in this thread based on the insinuation in Peter Jackson's remark:

But 'lets get this thing slapped together and released pronto so we can get some cash as quick as we can', worries me. I'm hoping (even though we've all been waiting and waiting and waiting) that PJ has enough clout still with the new folks running things that he can put the brakes on a bit so that the movies are given enough time evolve properly. I don't know about anyone else, but I waited years for the LOTR movies be done well (imho of course), I have no problem waiting a little longer for the Hobbit movies to be done well. Waiting this long for a couple of horrible movies would definitely leave a sour taste in my mouth (as I'm sure it would countless others!).

I can only wish Guillermo well and express my fondest and most sincere regrets that he will no longer be a part of this adventure. I certainly understand the frustrations he's had and do not begrudge a great filmmaker from wanting to actually wanting to get back to his craft.

I know this project is dear to his soul, as it is (of course) to Peter, Fran and Philippa. As long as it remains within their very capable hands, I am sure (eventually) The Hobbit will be made in a manner we all hope to see with a director that has the characteristics required. Which Peter himself has in spades already.

The Hobbit is worth 6 years

Nothing Del Toro will do during the next six years will be remembered as significant compared to directing the Hobbit. Indeed, he will be remembered more for having co-written the Hobbit screenplay than for any of his movies, which most people cannot even name (ask the guy sitting next to you right now).

"Del Toro, yes, I remember him; he is the guy who did not direct the Hobbit. Can't name any of his movies off hand..."

In short, devoting six years to making the Hobbit is worth it. Surprised Del Toro did not see it that way.

Epic career misstep.

It is not the end of the world

Guillermo is a great director, he is to good to wait for stupid delays. I am a little disapointed that he is not directing, but I think that any work he put into the hobbit will live on because any director who takes the reins will be crazy or prideful to ignore Guillermo's work. I hope that Guillermo can start on something like Frankenstein or Hellboy III.

As for who should take over, I agree with many other people, Alfonso should take over, he did a great job revitalizing the Harry Potter franchize and his other films are all great.

What really happened

In Reply To:
"To pay his legal bills and the punitive judgements against him for breaches of contract with the other studios he has committed to make films for?"

If you are right, then what really happened was Del Toro told MGM (or whoever), "Look, if I direct the Hobbit, you will have to pay untold dollars to absolve my obligations to other studios" and they said "No way." And he said, "Well then I guess I'm out."

This puts it in a whole different light, makes a lot of sense, and fits with the press releases, where they mention his obligations to other projects.

Seems like PJ might find himself in the same boat, though, if he too has obligations to other studios' projects. Guess they really do need a new director, and one who is not booked. This could be interesting.

Mr Del Toro

I have only just been able to reply to your post to say how sad this turn of events makes me. I think most of us who post on TORN have come to believe that you are the best of all choices to bring the Hobbit to the screen as Director. Your insight, commitment and integrity have been proven to us and many will now fear what this forced change will bring as a degraded end product. I hope this fear will be proved wrong. It is, of course, equally sad that you have to leave this project after two years of full effort without achieving any final result.

Obviously the MGM situation and delays were not expected or welcome but I do hope that this situation does not signal increasingly fundamental problems with the project that will be seen to become even more damaging as time goes on. I wish you the very best for all future projects but still hold on to a slim hope that some agreement means you could return to Directing the Hobbit project.

I'll try to get your second and third novels, as I finish this first.
