Happy Memorial Day Fiesta!

Yes, it's a 3-day weekend for U.S. TORnadoes (we actually had a few tornadoes touch down here in Colorado on Thursday - so hopefully they'll stay away over the weekend Shocked). So, the barbeques, camping gear and picnic items will be dusted off (if they haven't been already) and put to good use again.

BG and I have a really nice picnic backpack we got as a wedding gift, so we're hoping to fill it full of sarnies, soda and maybe even a little bubbly and find a nice place to picnic on a trail somewhere. Other than that, my own weekend will be packed with work as a client deadline is looming. So, this will be a drive-by Fiesta for moi. Frown But, work now means days off later in June - so it's all good!

Tell us what your weekend plans are, no matter where you live or what you're doing. And, most of all, have a good one!!!

*kicks juke box* "Riders on the Storm" by The Doors starts to play.

Happy, fun weekend, all!

*pops in with to-go mug*

I'll just fill this with some coffee, Altaira, I've got to rush off also.

Memorial Day celebrations at the school here; we just finished herding groups of kids into the Library to Skype with servicemen in Iraq, now we're setting up for a luncheon for the town's senior citizens and servicepeople. Lots of different uniforms walking around here!

But the kids are asking great questions, and those abroad seem to be really enjoying this as well.

A picnic on a trail in the Rockies - now that is romantic! Heart Have a wonderful time, you two, and try to not work too hard, Altaira! Wink

Happy Memorial Day! :)

Yikes about the tornadoes and the work-weekend, Altaira Unimpressed -- glad you're safe, and hope the work goes well (and quickly, so you can enjoy the picnic! :) ).

As for me, if anyone's interested, the review I was speaking of last week did get posted, and it's of the excellent little video game Portal. :)

*gets Spring/Summer Usual* Hope everyone has a great weekend!! :)

It's a long weekend here too!

Spring Bank Holiday! Smile

So I'll just help myself to my special mug of beer before finishing off the last bit of work before going home.

Hopefully the nice weather will hold over the weekend.

Cheers all

perfect blue sky now

let's hope it stays that way for the weekend

I moved out of my dorm and into one of the campus theme houses for the summer

I've started my internship, though my adviser has been gone all week
so I'm learning fortran, actually I just finished reading the book on it that my prof lent me
It doesn't seem too hard, but we'll see what I think once I start working with actual programs for the research

My family is coming to visit me this weekend, which is exciting Smile

Happy Fiesta, all!

Don't work too hard, Altaira, and have a nice hike and picnic!

Just iced tea for OhioHobbit and me. He is working at spraying poison ivy and I am just laying around hoping the shingles leaves soonest.

I had hoped to start planting my garden this weekend, but . . .

We are supposed to get rain today, but they keep downgrading the chances, so maybe it will miss us.

Everyone have a nice weekend and U.S. sibs have a nice holiday weekend!

What's sarnies, precious?

Whatever it is, it sounds delicious. Between picnics, cookies and bacon I must be hungry.

Side note: at the wedding I was at last weekend, a guest there had the name "Hobbit." He was born in Minnesota, grew up in the jungles of Peru, and is attending seminary on some mountain top. Quite the character! He had a big bushy beard, though, which was a bit out of place for a hobbit Smile

Three Days Off! Woohoo!! :D

That sounds like a great way to spend a piece of it, Altaira :) I hope the weather stays amicable for you guys.

I'm bonding with my Mom and helping with LOTS of cleaning and repairs around the house... which is going to be a wonderful relief!

I hope everyone has a GREAT weekend (whether it's 3 or 2 days long) and remembers to stay safe!

Woo! It's a 3 day weekend here too!

Oooh Altaira, I've been eyeing up those picnic backpacks for quite some time, I think this may be the year I buy one!

Mostly house-job plans this weekend, though hopefully we will have time for a good hike or bike ride. Work has been busy, I could do with a break, but the kitchen isn't going to remodel itself!

We've had lots of fun with our chiminea/BBQ this week, and have some friends coming over for dinner tomorrow night. My Dad is home alone for a week or so, so I'm trying to get him to come here for dinner, but it's proving difficult! He thinks he's being a burden, which just isn't the case, I just like having him round for dinner!

Oh, and I got a cake order in this week! Which is very exciting, I love baking cakes, but it's even better when I get paid to do it!

Happy long weekend all!

News of the World...

Great album cover for Queen back in 1977. That over-played sports anthem combination of "We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions was on this album.
No sad news this week only because today is my birthday so I'm not gonna dwell on any of what's currently going on. Safe journey to hikers, safe eating to grillers, and STUPENDOUSLY HAPPY weekend to all! I'll be posting birthday mathoms as I come up with them throughout the day but to honour the holiday (which I know is a U.S. Holiday only, but most every country around the world has a version) a little history:

Originally thought to have been observed May 1, 1865 under the name of "Decoration Day" at what is now Hampton Park, South Carolina. The park had been used as a temporary POW camp for Union soldiers and also as a mass grave for those who died there. After the end of the Civil War, former slaves exhumed the bodies in the mass grave and gave them all a proper individual burial and built a fence around the graveyard with an arched entryway and called it a Union cemetary. The work was completed in only 10 days. On May 1, 1865, the Charleston newspaper reported that a crowd of up to ten thousand, mainly black residents, including 2800 children, proceeded to the location for included sermons, singing, and a picnic on the grounds, thereby creating the first Decoration Day. In 1866 the day was set as May 30th because that was NOT the anniversary of a particular battle. The name "Memorial Day" was first used in 1882, but that name did not become popular until after WWII and it did not become a Federal Holiday until 1967.

There is never a good war or a bad peace, but may all those who have served be remembered with kindness and honored for their service to others.

Hmmm. I'll have a double-tall mug of what Hengist is having, please-and-thank-you?

Happy Memorial Day to our American TORnsibs!

I missed the Fiesta last week, since it was my last day at work and school. I have officially finished University (only 3 pending exams next week are left) and I left work to have a couple months of rest before starting gradate school in September, so these are exciting times!

This weekend will be familiar, I guess. My two cousins will celebrate their Confirmation (a Catholic sacrament in which the person, now consciously, confirms the Christian vows and promises their parents and godparents made for them during their baptism) and we will go celebrate that a cousin of mine has just been informed he no longer has cancer, which he has been fighting for 6 or 7 months now (he didn't know about it before).

So I guess its a good week. Smile Hope you all have fun, and all the best wishes for yor weekend!

The secret to sane and relatively smooth moves...

Is once you get a box properly packed, when you move KEEP that box, preferably labelled and order your boxes in a logical fashion so you can find the right box to pack up again. Then, when you "acquire" new STUFF, buy some boxes and begin when you open your new mathom of finding a box for it for when it too will have to be packed and shipped. By doing a little work once to get organized, moving becomes a snap - except storage for all those boxes! <chuckle>

It's not a singular holiday...

A "bank holiday" can be any of several throughout the year with the only correlation between them is that the banks (and most other institutions) are closed that day and in many cases other businesses follow suit. If memory serves it came to be called bank holidays because if the banks closed to observe the holiday in question then it usually ended up being a national holiday. Did I get that right or close British TORnfolk?

Just had a three day five year audit at work. They found three deficiencies, two of which I think we'll be able to erase with some documentation. Life is good.

There's also some recommendations where they told us to do the exact oppostie of what previous inspectors said. Same old same old.

Happy Memorial Day and Spring Bank Day...

to all of you....hope you all have a great long weekend........us Canadians celebrated ours last weekend. Victoria is May 24th, celebrating the birthday of Queen Victoria. More commonly known up here as May Two-Four weekend. Usually means cottages and two-fours of beer. Its the first long weekend of the summer up here. Luckily enough, I had a five day weekend last weekend. Weather was fantastic. Best May Two-Four weather-wise we've had in a good five years. We were at our cottage on Buck Lake, which is about 20 minutes north of Kingston, Ontario and about an hour forty-five minutes south of Ottawa. My family is coming from just outside of Toronto, which means its about a 2 hour drive east for us along the Trans-Canada Highway......Just a gorgeous weekend on the water. We had 20 people up there at one point for a night or two. And yes, there were several two-fours consumed over the weekend! Eucre tournament also. A bit of texas hold-em, some trivia, some monopoly all outside. Fire pit was in use all weekend...tons of fishing and swimming. Company wasn't bad either.

Anyway, this weekend is a normal weekend for us. One of my gf's nephews has his fifth birthday party on Saturday, and then off to the big smoke of Toronto on Sunday for a Blue Jays - Baltimore Orioles baseball game in the afternoon. Hopefully the dome is open and we can bask in the sun, have a $12 beer or two and watch the young-gun Jays defeat a divisional rival.

Again, to all you having a long weekend this weekend, have a good one, have a safe one.

What's the matter, James? No glib remark? No pithy comeback?"

So hopefully your entertainment won't slip-the-script, as it were. Happy weekend and yikes! Your gf's NEPHEW turns five-oh tomorrow (or is celebrating it then)??!

Made it!

I think this is the first time I'm not late! Just a nice cold ice water for me today.

I wanted to quickly drop in and let everyone know I'm still here -- this has been one CRAZY week!

Happy Memorial Day to all of you US TORnadoes! Up here in the Great White North, we had our long weekend (Victoria Day) last weekend. I spent it sewing with my daughter (again!)

My daughter has her big Cosplay convention this weekend, so I'll have a bunch of her friends over all weekend - they should all be here in about 2 hours. My job is to feed them, help them with their costumes, drive them to the convention, pick them up from the convention, listen to all their great stories/adventures, feed them some more, provide them with a place to sleep, feed them more, help them with their costumes, drive them to the convention, pick them up from the convention, listen to all their great stories/adventures, feed them some more, provide them with a place to sleep, feed them some more, help them with their costumes, drive them to the convention, pick them up from the convention, listen to all their great stories/adventures, and then take them all to their respective homes. Phew! Cosplay Mom is a busy girl!

Somewhere in there, I plan to spend some quality time with my comical side kick and partner in crime - maybe we might even go on a date! How exciting! I might get some gardening done as well. One can only hope!

Have a great one!

Cheers!

An Orc-liquor 151 on the rocks, barkeep.

My 18-year-old daughter has raduated from high school (home schooled), prepped to go off to college in August, and goe to California to work at the inlaw family business to sock away some cash, and learn about working for a living.

Man (and Wo-man to those that are easily offended by meaningless verbalizations), do I feel old.

No...! lol

not five-oh...fifth...just 5....he's just a wee little guy and can't hold his booze....I'll probably buy him a beer, hand him a stogie and push him in the pool.
The O's aren't doing that well....last in the division, but that is a division with the Yankees and Red Sox. And the Tampa Bay Rays who are off to a huge start, and of course the Blue Jays. Who are having a really hot start as well. So the O's are probably not a bad team in the end, just having to compete with Evil Empire #1a (Yankees), Evil Empire #1b (Red Sox), and two teams that are smoking hot right now is tough to do.

I'm kidding by the way, about the five year old drinking and smoking....not so much about the pushing him in the pool thing though. He deserves it...never, ever shares his G.I. Joe toys with me. Yep, pool it is. He won't even see it coming.....bwahahahahahahahahahhahahaAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAAA....heh.

Time to decorate graves :-)

That's what Uncle Baggins' grandparents taught him to do as a boy on Memorial Day. We may not go on the actual day, but we generally take one day to drive all over northern Colorado and leave flowers on the graves of our ancestors. There are several of them in various towns around here. Then we take another day to go up to Rocky Mountain National Park and scatter flower petals in the Big Thompson River, from a place we call Grandfather Bridge, where we've scattered the ashes of my ancestors for generations. The ashes of my great-grandparents, grandparents, uncle and mother are there. It's a sweet family tradition.

Here's a photo of my mom and me scattering flower petals on Memorial Day a few years ago. Last year we scattered her ashes there.

Hope you and BG have a wonderful picnic!

Happy Happy Birthday GAndyalf!!!!

I'll have a soda - still supposed to be be *ahem!* working - it will end up a little more festive in about 2 1/2 hours for me! Three days off to visit the in-laws on the big lake for sun and fun and a lot of doing very little if I can get away with it! Sunday is the only day I have to do anything - Church - and then I may also find a little time to putter amongst my flowers!

Happy Memorial Day to everyone and don't forget to hug a service member to thank them for their sacrifice!

I'll have to make a pilgrimmage back to RMNP expressly to think of your ancestors, Auntie...

I used to go to my dad's grave every year. Sometimes on the 24th, the anniversary of his passing, sometimes on my b-day, the anniversary of his internment, sometimes on Memorial Day. I've missed that since moving here so far from any relatives. Gives one a nuance to the perspective of immigrants.

no snapdragons, but

I'd love to hear about the daisies! It's a very genteel man who likes daisies - I think they tend to be underappreciated!

My roses are trying to take over my tiny yard - they vy with the mints of all kind - cat mint, peppermint, kentucky mint, spearmint (I got into mint not realizing it was so vigorous!) and a single peony I doubt will actually ever bloom - carnations as they are my birtthday month flower (Jan) and lilies of the valley and geraniums. I have to plant east things because I have kind of a black thumb Frown but still love all things planty!

Hens and Chicks too, a succelent with a variety called legolas/legolis!

If you do, let me know.

Maybe we could have a mini-moot with some of the other Colorado sibs.

There was a letter to Dear Abby or some such several years ago from a woman who was offered a job in another state but didn't want to leave her daughter's grave. Abby suggested putting up a memorial in the new place.

Our next door neighbors planted a tree in their yard in memorial of the woman's mother. Maybe you could do something like that for your dad.

Sometimes it makes me a little sad that my ancestors don't have any gravestones. But I did buy bricks for them at the flood memorial in Big Thompson canyon, since I wanted to support the memorial and it was an opportunity to have some kind of marker. We often stop there on Memorial Day too, partly to honor the two policemen who gave their lives to save so many people the night of the flood (my parents were flood survivors.)

I will!

As soon as I have a safe vehicle again (clutch is gone on mine but I haven't the $1100 it will take to replace it) and a few spongelinks to rub together (my older sister didn't invent the term "spongelinks" for money, but she did use it a lot, her being fond of obscure things from sources she'd read as she was a voracious reader all her life).

I was always amused after I finally found out that Abigail Van Buren and Ann Landers weren't the same woman writing under different noms de plume as I'd thought but twins.

Thank you! I especially adore trees and planted them with Anne at the two places we owned when we were together! I'll even plant one for our marriage and my 1st marriage the next place I end up. What a GRAND idea!

I've seen the Memorial there and the one in Lyons, CO at the park there.

Off the top of my head I'd say Labour Day weekend? I lose my job Aug 31st and planned on taking a short 'vacation' to Vancouver, WA to see my mom at HER place for the 1st time in a dozen years now so on the trip back that would be a good thing.

Drive-by post for me!

We're off to South Texas to celebrate my mother's 85th birthday. It's officially today, but we're having a big semi-surprise party tomorrow. It's semi-surprise, because she kinows we're all coming for her birthday, but she doesn't know about the party. It will be an open house type of thing and I've invited about 75 people to drop by and eat some birthday cake with her. We did the same thing for her 75 th, and a smaller version for her 80th. We're very blessed that my mom is in great physical and mental health. On her 80th birthday, after not realizing all these people dropping by were for her *birthday party*, she joked that the first sign of old age is not knowing what's going on around you. Laugh So her sense of humor is fully functional as well.

Have a safe and happy Memorial Day, everyone!

Holy Oleo, Batman!

That was my favorite line from the old Batman TV show. Catwoman had tied up Batman and Robin under two big magnifying glasses and was going to cook them (they were saved by a handy eclipse.)

Catwoman's response was "I didn't know you could yodel.'" :-D

Yep, oleo was short for oleomargarine. We always called it "Oley" in my house growing up. Pass the Oley, please.

Portal.

GLaDOS (the computer) keeps promising cake if you finish the game, and scribbled on a wall somewhere in it is that phrase. Over and over and over again.

Trust me, you do not want to know about the cake...

Elfkind shortpants had better have baked

a whole tree full of cookies to be as in-demand as Figwit! Such a cutie patootie!

A kindly, avuncular elf with cookies vs a pretty pretty elf like Figwit. Sounds like one heck of a cagefight!

Well

It's sort of a potluck. I'm contributing Man With A Movie Camera, a 1929 silent Russian film, and the first disc of Sapphire and Steel, a late 1970/early 1980 British TV scifi/horror series. Wifey is contributing New Moon. But the feature will be Kamikaze Girls.

She's 18 already, and leaving the "nest"? Congratulations to her, and I wish her well in her future studies! Does she know what she wants to major in?

So how are sister and little brother doing these days? And did you ever get the interior of your house fully finished? Smile

His name is kingly...

Meet Brego! He is our new 88 lb. baby. He is a great big, beautiful greyhound that we have had for three weeks (as of tomorrow). He is playful and sweet and a total Mama's boy. He's about 4 1/2 yrs old and had only been off the track about a week when we got him. He is VERY relaxed and has settled into our home as if he's always been here. I wanted to share right away, but it has taken awhile to get pics ready, etc. We knew he was "Brego" as soon as we saw him. It fits him perfectly! Even people who don't know where the name comes from think it fits him.

Just one more...

Our early spring was just awful, so this has been really great for our family. We'll be seeing family and friends this weekend, which I'm looking forward to. I am hoping to make some serious headway on my report cards and finish planning for the rest of the year, too. My 4th graders have already pretty much checked out, but we aren't done until the 17th of June and I have to have something for them to do! Crazy

I hope this finds you all well! Enjoy the weekend and *cheers* to one and all!

I once had a move where

guys from our church were willing to do the whole kit and kaboodle (does anyone know what those are and where to get one? ; ]). Because of that, I did not want to complain. But I had labeled every box as a to what, and just as importantly WHERE: kitchen, baby's room, parents room, living room . . . figuring it would all go like clockwork. I didn't bank on what I guess was New York Guy Practicality. As they passed me in the hall with box after box, every single man asked rhetoriclally "Down cellar, right?"Wink

We have a ton of pictures of him sleeping because it's hilarious, but it's "puppy porn." He lets it all hang out, that's for sure. He is, shall we say, very comfortable with his body! It's the funniest thing ever to see such a great big dog sleeping that way.

Don't know when she'll always make costumes on her own...

...she doesn't really LIKE sewing. She'd much rather I make them and she wears them. However, when she enters a competition, she has to make them on her own. I just provide guidance and problem solving. But, if it's a general hall costume and a style I like, she knows she can talk me into sewing it for her. I started making her costumes when she was 3 years old.

I love sewing costumes, but I have never much cared for cutting - so now she does all my cutting for me which is a help.

The kids had a ball getting organized for the convention this afternoon - my living room was a hive of activity/costumes/wigs/shoes/props - you name it! And the costumes I saw at the convention when I dropped them off looked great! I'm sure they will have many stories to share with me tonight when I pick them up.

Cheers!

Any time, Dernwyn!

He thinks he's a lap dog. He is the snuggliest thing ever. I have fallen asleep with him on the floor twice! He definitely loves his "peeps."

When are you guys done for the summer? This is such a tough time of year with older kids. Last year in first grade was a breeze because they have no concept of time. The last day of school they were still expecting to see me again the next day. The older kids know that their end-of-year exams are done, etc. and are pretty much "done." I have the computer lab reserved a lot the next few weeks!

Oh my goodness, I had no idea!

That was one summer we didn't go out there--but we drove through the Big Thomson Canyon almost every single time we went. I couldn't help visualizing over and over how impossible escape would be in there, and trying to figure out in my head if there could have been any way, or anyone who could have managed to climb those impossible fractured cliffs in time. How did anybody survive--how did your parents??!!

Cool idea!

We have adopted some servicemen, but I think getting the kis on Skype is a terrific idea! Mind if I snatch it and bring it to the attention of someone up here? It may be something to look into for the fall.

We have an ongoing program at the school in order to promote good manners and have people come in every Thursday to eat lunch with the kids. They use place settings, etc. and really practice eating properly. Everybody loves it.

We'd set up a laptop with Skype

because one Board of Ed member got deployed to Iraq for a year! This is how he attends meetings. He's also the dad of two boys at the school, and all the kids and he had a wonderful time with the questions-and-answers.

We put the little "eyeball" computer camera up on a mic stand and elevated it, so he could see the whole group. And we projected him from the laptop onto a large screen.

Formal luncheons! Now that is classy! Smile

A young man on a motorcycle told them to get out of the car.

They climbed up the hillside in blinding rain, and a minute later their car went down the river. They were airlifted out the next day by helicopter. Twenty-five years later I got to meet that man and thank him. Here's a poem I wrote about him:

Butch

"Next time there's a flood,
I'm calling in sick."

Big strong hand shakes mine,
Eyes crinkle over a graying beard.

"It was no big deal.
Lucky I was there, that's all.
If I hadn't stopped for that beer in Estes
I'd a' been caught in the Narrows.
Funny how a little thing,
One tiny moment
Can change the next thirty years.

"The water roared up under the road behind me
Like a movie monster,
Buckling the blacktop as I ran down the canyon.
Rain so hard you could drown
Just breathing it.
Put my head down
And it made a tunnel of air to breathe.

"In the dark I passed a car.
Dang! There's people inside!
That can't be good.
I wasn't gentle—
Pushed 'em up the mountain.
Wouldn't let 'em get their coats.
Car washed away soon as they got out.

"Scene in the cabin was worse 'n any horror movie.
Little girl with big eyes
Shining in the dark.
Pink streaks on her face:
Tears through the blood.

"Her mama--I've seen better color on a corpse.
Arm was broke almost all the way off.
I put on a tourniquet,
Got her to the helicopter.
I was sure she was a goner.

"Didn't read the obituaries--
Didn't want to know.
That's why I didn't come to the ten-year.
Afraid I'd find out--
Afraid I could a' done more.

"But at the twenty-year reunion,
Something pulled me,
Made me decide to come.
Got out of the car, and there she was!
I couldn't believe it.

"There she is now.
Still got her arm, and it works too.
Miracles do happen.

"Still don't like the rain, much.
Don't even like my water glass too full.
When it sprinkled tonight,
I was ready to climb the mountain.
But I'm glad about your folks.
It was no big deal."

We shake his hand, my sister and I.
Mom sits smiling up at him, remembering.
It was a big deal, Butch.
One tiny moment thirty years ago,
A young man banging on a car window,
And grandchildren growing up
Loving grandparents they might never have known.

"Yep," he says, "Lucky.
You might a' been lighting candles tonight,
And instead, here we are.
But next time there's a flood,
I'm calling in sick.
Still don't like the rain."

Now off to dig up the last of the potatoes and first of the yams.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

On Monday we got word that my 89-year-old granny took a nasty fall and my sister and I drove the 8 hours to Evansville, Indiana today to visit her in the hospital. I had a few minutes with her just a short while ago, but she was pretty tired and kicked us out of the room.

So, it's been a long day for me. I'll just sneak behind the bar and mix myself something fruity and alcoholic.

I'm told that she looks better today, but she still looks like she lost a prize fight. I was shocked when they turned on the lights in her room and I was able to see the bruising on her face.

<shocked> You're NOT??!

When I was a kid my Mom was 23 (happens to be the year BEFORE she bore me!) until I was nine or ten when her brother said, "Oh no! If I have to be 42 then you have to be 33!" Not sure when mom forgave him for that one!

"She named the child Leonard James Akaar?"

The "she" being Julie Newmar as "Eleen" in "Friday's Child", aka Catwoman (the second incarnation of that character).

Not exactly a favorite episode of mine, but it did have some great Kirk-Spock-McCoy moments!

But I don't recall her being in any other episodes...

What a sweetie!

Good on you for adopting a greyhound. He looks calm and happy. Does he like to run when he gets a chance or is he perfectly happy being a couch potato? I think it's great that those dogs can make the switch with such apparent ease from being racers to being house dogs. Give him a pat for me!

Wow! There were TWO!

I was thinking of Yvonne Craig who was Batgirl (your answer wasn't one of the "good guys" even if Julie was the most amorous of the 3 Catwoman actresses towards Batman). Yvonne was also the Orion Marta in the ST TOS episode "Whom Gods Destroy"

Okay, I have to ask...

my American sensibilities have yet to discover the point of eating yams. NZS insists on boiling them, and I think they taste like pureed cardboard. Is there something better to do to them, or are they supposed to taste like pureed cardboard?

Lucky you to see blue sky. I saw the merest hint of it a couple days ago, then the skies closed over again and the deluge continued. Have you been having as much rain as we've had?

I hope your grandmother does as well as mine did a year ago...

In January of 2009 my then-97 year-old grandmother had a "mini-stroke" and fell and broke her hip. The docs said she might not live and would never walk again. Seven months later grandma was walking and BACK IN HER OWN HOUSE - the only difference being she lives with 24/7 nursing care. Next month she'll be 99 and from the reports I get she might well become the 1st family centenarian next year.
I hope your grandmother does as well and my thought and good wishes go with her, you, and your family. <busily lights all the candles he can find for AD and family>

Urgh!

I don't think you'd want to candy *these* yams! They're not the nice sweet, sweet-potato-like yams like in the U.S. They're more like...hmmm...swollen, orange, almost transparent, nubbly roots, shaped and sized a bit like a large ginger root. Okay, that's not a very helpful description, but they're an entirely different thing than the yams of the U.S., and I sure haven't yet discovered the point of eating them.

Cute horse, that White-socks! Is he yours?

*paddles up in a canoe, looking for a bit of sunshine*

Okay, really, whoever asked for an end to the drought, you got your wish, but this is enough already! We have had SIX straight days of RAIN, and I'm not talkin' your indecisive drizzly bits of rain followed by some dark clouds. The only variation has been whether it's raining hard, or outright downpouring, with a bit of hail mixed in a few times for good measure. And there's no end in sight yet. Everything is muddy, saturated, waterlogged, or just plain underwater. Enough already!

And to top off my week, two nights ago I came home from work feeling lousy and achey and discovered I had a high fever. I crawled in bed. My sick dog, who's been going downhill fast, for the first time refused his dinner. Later, I dragged myself out of bed to send an overdue work email. As I was working on that, NZ Toddler (age 2 1/2) was discovered completing an extensive art project -- involving himself, the carpet, his favorite snuggly (without which he can't sleep), a few toys, and the contents of his dirty diaper. After a major cleaning project, NZ Toddler was put in bed, where he howled for about 20 minutes because he didn't have his beloved Lambkins. What a night.

I'm feeling better today, but I sure could use some sunshine!

Enjoy your picnic, Altaira, and I do hope everyone else's weekends are off to better starts than mine!

Well.....

....when I used to chaperone all the kids at the cons, I noticed that many of the costumes show a lot of skin. But, still - the costumes are great! And - if you're comfortable in you skin, well I say - go for it!

My daughter and her friend won for their costumes at a convention last summer - for "cleanest craftmanship" for these anime characters they worked on for about 6 months. They were delighted! I remember the excited phone call that Sunday morning when they got their results. So the two of them started on another team project - a very difficult project I must say. They're not ready for this weekends convention, but they are hoping to have them ready for the one they go to in the summer.

They did get into a great photo shoot at another convention last March for a new cosplay magazine that was just released today at the convention they're at this weekend - and they are over the moon tonight because their pictures are in it. It's a great picture! Their excitement is delightful to watch. "I'm keeping this forever and I'm going to show it to my grandchildren!" Adorable.

Just about got everyone settled down for the night - best get some sleep so I can face the busy morning!

Cheers!

I roast them,

especially with a beef roast, because - as you say - boiling them removes any flavour whatsoever. Tip: The smaller ones are the sweetest.

And thanks for you note below about yams in the US - I had an inkling that US and NZ yams were different vegetables so it's good to get confirmation. :)

By the way how do you 'candy' a vegetable? And why would you want to?

US yams

are very like orange kumara, only perhaps even sweeter. US sweet potatoes are a bit like the lighter-colored kumara, whichever-color-you-call-them, the ones that come out more yellowy-golden when cooked. But some people call US yams sweet potatoes, just to make things more confusing. But as far as I've ever seen, there's nothing in the US like the NZ yam!

Candying US yams is a traditional Thanksgiving-style way to cook them. The way I know how to do it is to cook them first (boil or bake), then mash them up with a bunch of brown sugar, add pineapple (crushed or in chunks), spread in baking dish, and then top with a good pile of marshmallows (which I've found called Mallow Bakes here -- do you call them marshmallows too?). Decadently sweet -- at least it's low fat!

I'm done with winter already

and it hasn't even really started yet. Sigh. We're too close to the beach usually to get much in the way of snow, but that's not much comfort since if I have to put up with wet miserably cold weather, I'd rather have snow to play in than mudpuddles. The last week has reminded me of the worst of midwinters that we used to have back in Tacoma, Washington in the US (a region notorious for heavy, incessant winter rains). I sure was happy to leave those winters behind!

I'm better today, thanks. And NZ Toddler has promised not to investigate his nappy again that closely. But his memory for promises lasts about 30 seconds, so I'm not holding my breath. Meanwhile, I'm dressing him in overalls.

Sure, feel free to post some of those logic puzzles. I'd have too much trouble trying to dig them up on my nearly-defunct old computer, anyways. Feel free to give me whatever notoriety (or credit) seems appropriate. Oddly, just a couple of days ago while doing a sudoku puzzle, I contemplated the fact that sudoku puzzles are really just a simple exercise in logic, and that I really missed proper logic puzzles (which I don't think I'd thought about in several years). Anyways, I'd be pleased that those ones get some more use! :-)

The photo

Here it is.

I wouldn't have had a copy except for a small one in a book called "Reflection on the River", but last summer my sister scanned a bunch of photos for my mom's memorial service, and this was one of them. The black smudge on my mom's smile is actually a stain on the photo.

As you can see, they're in their square dance clothes, complete with name badges. They never made it to the square dance that night. But they went the next week, taking the long way up to Estes Park since the canyon was, of course, closed.

If trans fats really are a danger...

Then how is this over-regulation? <Tries hard NOT to go on a rant> Nope. Don't recall 'zactly where you grew up, (they tell me my memory should return when I'm not under the stress I am right now - I hope so 'cause this is scary having had a great mem'ry all my life and now seeming to be prepping for Alzheimer's!). I do remember it was a place with a backyard big enough for two enormous soup vats! Evil

We actually have several...

Memorial Day and Veteran's Day (anciently Armistice Day, in Europe often called Remembrance Day) which is the Monday in November closest to the 11th, and to a large extent Flag Day (June 14th) is celebrated as an honor to veterans. We here in the States are long on parade-style "honours" but short on healthcare for vets (along with everyone else). In some ways, I think your system (Sweden, right?) is better.

What?

You've never even tried this?!:

I thought every American (and seasonal visitor) was forced to try Bruce's canned yams at least once! Reheated as is or candied to make a dentist faint. =)

We grew our own white sweet potatoes last year. Maybe some yellow ones this year, too, but no orange yams.

Wow, is it ever nice to see you here, Ro!

What little characters your two boys are, lol. I wonder where they get *that* trait from? (she asks, knowing full well it's handed down from both mommy and daddy). Laugh

But, how horrible to have that happen when you're already sick. I guess you're probably used to it by now, but not while you're mommy's sick boys!

It worries me that you're not feeling well, of course, but it brought tears to my eyes to hear about Beren. I was hoping he was all better by now. Here's to making him feel as comfortable and loved as possible (which I know you're doing on both counts).

*hugs* and hang in there!

<laughs> I've learnt a LONG time ago...

That when a woman utters a challenge like that one of two things can happen: either she wants a strong brute that *can* "make her" (i.e. one that is worthy of her own inner strength by not being intimidated by a strong woman) or that there is no power on earth that can (one that if she is overpowered resents it and holds an emotional grudge). I lose either way on that one because I'm a gentle person. It was a funny image though. Apologies to you if it honestly offended (doubt it given your winking smile) and if not rest assured that I would never make you nor any other woman do anything against her will at least as long as she clearly communicates to me what her will actually is on a matter and doesn't resort to *femine-speak* Evil

We've got a white mountain this morning.

The snow is a month or two late, but I'm quite happy that we had a warmer than usual autumn! The southerly's coming off the mountain so I'll be bundling up today - BUT, no rain! :D

The candied yams sound ... interesting. It makes me wonder how each nationality comes up with these dishes that sound a little odd to other ears - or how anyone thought that Marmite, for instance, would be a seller. Uhh-mmm (and I quote):

"Oh yes, they are--

thank goodness. They over-regulate, but this is a good one."

I meant, regulating trans-fats is a good regulation, and thanks goodness they have done so; but that they tend to over-regulate in some other areas (but not being civic minded enough, exactly what I have objected to in the past escapes me right now. It tends to be a common complaint around here, so I guess I mostly have picked up on that . . .Blush).

It so happens that i have it.

I was digging holes for plantings on the ugly lot property line and i was moving dirt without gloves and apparently there was PI in root form i did not not realize and my right hand is swollen and have itchies here and there.

I forgot i had 'tecnu' poison oak-n-ivy cleaner for removal of those oils that cause havoc (here at the camp) but i put it on anyway. It helped. Yes some people are lucky not to get it, but not me (either).

Just wondering!

About the house, that is! Laugh But as long as the kitchen and bath are usable - those are the most important!

Film-making is a skill that will always be in demand, there are so many ways it's used! My youngest is currently studying for a degree in acoustic arts (sound engineering), and already she's done the sound editing for a Civil War documentary.

I can well imagine that little sis is feeling lonely for her big sis at times, this is such a big change in their lives! Fortunately with email and things like Facebook (my kids keep in touch with their cousins, aunts, and uncles that way), those two can still have a communication closeness which was lacking back in our day.

I think that regulation isn't the problem as much as enforcement is...

And enforcement doesn't happen because government can never pay a salary that hopes to compete with bribes, though here in capitalism-land they call it "gifts". <gets offa soapbox> Anyway, you need to read more Aunt Erma if your self-esteem keeps you from sharing about forgetting your name - "I wore my PJs inside out once and my mom, thinking it was a nametag, called me 'Dr Denton' for a week."

Yes, we were living at home.

Dad had said, earlier that evening, "We'll be home about midnight, Lord willing and the creek don't rise." :-D But they didn't get home until the following afternoon. I was 19, and my two siblings were younger. Uncle Baggins, who was my boyfriend at the time, was with us. Our aunt came over with her CB the next day to try to get information, but couldn't find out anything. These days we take communication for granted, but the phones were out for a week.

Lovely!

Snow on the mountains makes for such a picturesque view. I hope you stayed warm today! We have a nice view of the Southern Alps from...well, not quite from our house unless you were standing on the roof, but from points nearby, and I just love seeing them covered in snow.

We actually finally had some sun this morning -- such a welcome change! But then it was decided we needed a family outing, and the only place to head -- into town -- was straight back under the surly grey clouds. So much for the sun! We spent a cold afternoon watching the boys play in the sand on the beach, and now there's no clear sky to be seen.

Speaking of marmite, though, and variations in food preferences between countries, I have a question for you. I was reading a kids' book by a Kiwi author about a young girl and her Gran. They had picnics on a beach and ate marmite and potato crisp sandwichs. Marmite's bad enough, but adding potato chips in with it? Is this a closet Kiwi favorite that I hadn't yet run across, or something odd that the author made up?

What a nice welcome!

Wish I had more time to spend here. I really do miss my old friends!

Nice to see you too, Elizabeth. I like to think of what gorgeous weather you must be enjoying when this dismal dreary stuff starts getting old. I know you must get rain sometimes, but at least in the pictures Hawaii's always sunny. :-) I hope you're doing well.

NZ Toddler is MUCH less of a handful than his elder brother, and is generally cooperative and well-behaved. So whenever he does come up with some egregious misdeed, it always takes us by surprise! With Eldarion, we just expect it...

And my dear dog, unfortunately, won't be getting better. He was diagnosed with terminal cancer not quite 6 months ago, and there wasn't much we could do. He's close to refusing all food, so he doesn't have many days left. He's only 8 years old, so it's hard having him go so early. His sister is going to miss him tremendously.

Omigosh! He really said that?

That's a common phrase - "Lord willin' and the creek don't rise" - and I've use it myself, never expecting, of course, that it would come true in a literal sense! That adds another amazing element into their already hair-raising story.

Oh, gosh, that must have been one of the worst days of your life, not knowing where they were...Unsure

Thanks, Altaira. :-)

I'm recovered now, and NZ Toddler hasn't yet produced a repeat masterpiece -- though he was caught yesterday trying to get his pants down. Must put overalls on him tomorrow...

Beren's tumor, the vets finally decided, was inoperable after all. So he got to keep his leg, but the tumor as well. It's a pretty aggressive one, unfortunately. He's been in good spirits up until about a week ago, when he discovered himself unable to run with his sister because it made him violently cough too much. Now anything faster than a slow walk is too much for him. He's eating people-food with extreme encouragement (buttered bread, cheese, and roast chicken with gravy), but I don't think even that bit of appetite is going to last for more than a couple more days. So he doesn't have much longer to go. We're just giving him all the love and indulgences we can right now.

Did you know Beren (and the other two dogs) once spent the night on the bed with a certain person who stayed at my house who shares a first name with BG? I still laugh about that one. They always abandoned me at the first sign of company.

ohhhh...

I'm sorry about your pup. I was so happy to see you, I forgot to ask about him. He is so lucky to have you, but why did this have to happen? This is the worst part of having pets. I had to intervene for my friend last week to help her understand he dog had reached his time. I've lost many myself... and it's never... you know...

*warm hug* I'm so sorry, Ro. I know how much your furry kids mean to you.

Likewise!

It's so nice to be able to drop in and get a chance to reconnect a bit. :-)

My seasons are still cross-wired, so I get the usual dejected about the onset of winter (and it's like Narnia in "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe": it's always winter without Christmas!), then double-dejected about the onset of winter-like weather in May, just when the spring lambs and bunnies should be out frolicking and the earth should be smelling warm again. Then I can't figure out what to make of January, when I should be wearing wool sweaters and drinking hot chocolate but instead I've got the air conditioning on! Some people have said you get used to it after 5 years, but I haven't got there yet. I think the worst part is winter without Christmas.

Get your bags packed and come on down this way! Sure would love to see you. We've had a dearth of visitors lately, and you've been promising to come for too long now. Our sleepout (or "outhouse", as my mother calls it) is waiting!

Thanks, gramma. :-)

Fingers crossed that NZ Toddler doesn't go in for more passion and creativity any time soon. Oddly, Eldarion, who is by far the bigger troublemaker, never engaged in that particular misdeed. NZ Toddler is usually so mild-mannered and well-behaved (he even always says "thank-you" without any prompting, something Eldarion still won't do) that it sure catches us by surprise when he does something scoldable. I think Eldarion at this age was getting several time-outs a day; NZ Toddler probably gets less than one a week -- and not because we've just gotten more indulgent!

I hope your weekend with your mom is going well. I also hope she knows what a gem of a daughter she has. :-)

You know, gramma...

I remember way back in my TORn newbie days when your beloved dog Squid passed away. I remember doing my best to write a poem in Elvish for you about him. Not sure I could even translate it now if I happened to find it again!

Must have been hard to help your friend see what needed to be seen. You're such a dear. But I know this is the price we have to pay for all the love we share with them...doesn't really make it easier, though.

My deepest sympathies for the loss of your Beren...

I admit double-taking when I first read it in this thread because my son's name is Beren. Not long into my divorce proceedings (pending as I type) I lost my golden retriever. She had been steadily losing her appetite for about four weeks or so and when my wife snatched my son and filed charges against me (I filed for the divorce so what she did was solely out of spite) poor Lucky just stopped eating altogether. I finally got her to the vet two weeks later and all the tests came back normal. Faced with the cruel choice of spending another $400 on tests or using that money for a completely unnecessary legal battle or opting for palliative care that might extend her life another 2 weeks or so I opted for her to rest. I had her for 12 of her 13 years and she'd had a good life but losing your first-ever pet is always hard.
I hope your family takes it's ease in that Beren had a fine eight years with you as you're obviously a loving and caring family.

Heh, I had forgotten that particular delight.

Yes, marmite and pototo chip sandwiches do exist, as do just plain ol' chip sandwiches. I would put it down to the oddities of children's tastes but I clearly remember one of my brother scarfing chip sandwiches when he was in his mid-teens. You had to eat them immediately after making them though, or the butter on the bread would make the chips go soft, and that was just gross.

I remember that honey and hundreds-and-thousands sandwiches was a treat when I was in primary school. The idea of that mixture now is faintly nauseating.

I had never thought of it that way.

In Reply To
it's always winter without Christmas!

Maybe you could start a family tradition of having a special dinner at home in mid-winter, to give you a celebration to build up to? Think of the personalisation you could give it!

I never considered the oddity of Easter and new life (represented by eggs) occuring in autumn until I thought about its origins in the northern hemisphere, during spring.

Well, actually, he's not quite lost yet...

Though it's just a matter of days now. But thank you. My condolences on the loss of your Lucky. Losing pets is heart-wrenching, even when you know you've given them a good life. And neat that your son is named Beren!

I don't know where it comes from, either

but putting potato chips in sandwiches can't be just a Kiwi thing, because it's still done in my neck of the woods. Seltzer's Lebanon or Sweet Lebanon Bologna, with ketchup and Utz potato chips on buttered bread is a regional favorite. Mom thought it was hilarious when she found out Dad's family did the same thing. (My mother started adding mustard to hers in my teen years, but I know she didn't always behave so oddly.) It's still common in other families, too, so when you see somebody get a packed lunch out and can smell the Lebanon bologna...you discretely look for the little bag of chips and watch to see if the sandwich gets opened. Then you know you're among your own kind.

*** I have nothing but pity for the rare unfortunate local lacking the palate for any kind of Lebanon bologna. Visitors on business trips would have it shipped back home. College kids have it sent in care packages.

He's our second grey...

and they are just the sweetest breed. Mr. Losse and I always say we'll never have another breed of dog after having our first grey. We had a female before and wanted a great big male this time. Boy, did we ever get one! He is an absolute love. They generally are couch potatoes. He goes on two walks a day, but doesn't run at all. He usually doesn't even run at the dog park. He is very playful in the house, though, and loves to chase after his toys.

Aragorn threw back his cloak. The elven-sheath glittered as he grasped it, and the bright blade of Andúril shone like a sudden flame as he swept it out. “Elendil!” he cried. “I am Aragorn son of Arathorn, and am called Elessar, the Elfstone, Dúnadan, the heir of Isildur Elendil’s son of Gondor. Here is the Sword that was Broken and is forged again! Will you aid me or thwart me? Choose swiftly!” TTT, Book III, Chapter 2

To quote Faramir……

War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.

Oh, yes :-) By the way,

parts of chapters 10 and 11 of my novel are about the Big Thompson flood, and are based on stories I heard from my parents and Butch, and at the memorial reunions I've gone to. I also used one of the reunions as the basis for chapters 43 and 44. It just occurred to me, and given the topic of this subthread I thought I'd mention it. Thanks for your sweet thoughts, and thanks to dernwyn too :-)
