Updates on the updates and general annotations on TH.

So, now that PJ's Lovely Bones tour is almost over, I thought it wise- seeing how some can whip up into a frenzy- to drop by and chat a bit.

A) About ONLY 3 actors returning: I think the emphasis on "only" is what slant the news the wrong way. I cannot imagine Gollum being played by anyone but Andy and in the second script there is still much in discussion to lock everything for now. Both PJ and I chime in on things "as they are at the moment" and, of course, things change.

I, for one, understand where Peter's coming from since 30% of my STRAIN tour questions, HELLBOY II, ORPHANAGE promotion questions, etc, etc where about the Hobbit. At different time we have been closer in locking on a piece of casting or hoping to get a script delivered, etc and things simply changed as we went along. So, don't etch this in stone or anything we both have said in the past, in stone since we communicate what we can when the window of exposure to the press and fans happens.

I still prefer to keep the dialogue open- inexact as it may get- that to remain mum or one-sided with the community that can really understand this project.

B) The target for production. Its simple: we may say what we want but until there are two scripts delivered and budgets and schedules to support them we will be all under a yellow light of development. THAT we have not stopped. As I have reported in the past, we are scouting, designing (my last 3 hour meeting with Weta was this morning) and will not stop. BUT the greenlight and thus commencement can only be granted by the studio. Pete as producer and me as director will do everything we can in the meantime.

C) Is there any trouble brewing with WB? Not at all. All I can say is that they reacted to our delivered script with great delight and we have been receiving strong support in our development.

Smaug is being animation tested, we are editing the previs, doing final selections on Dwarven War Artifacts and Gear and starting many fabrication tests for armies, prosthetics and wardrobes, etc

However, I do plan to be less and less in the public spotlight for two simple reasons: One: I am damn busy prepping this two Behemoths. Two: quite likely, I'll have very limited, if any, promotional time for "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" or "The Fall" (Second Strain book) myself but fear not- I will drop in as much as possible, as always.

Love

GDT

All sounds very exciting, and it's a relief to hear Andy's definitely back and there may be room for a few more returnees as well.

Thank you, Mr. Del Toro

For taking time out of your schedule to talk to us. It's very telling of your character, and it's a truly appreciated quality to be found in a director.

Everything sounds good, and any updates regarding Smaug puts a smile on my face. He's my favorite creature in all of Tolkien's works, so I'll be expecting some great things out of old Smaug the Golden (no pressure lol).

I know you don't need me of all people to tell you this, but by all means you guys take your time. I'd rather wait a little longer for a better product. If anything, I'd just like to get my hands on some of that WETA concept art to tide me over. Just a peak Wink.

But I did have one question for you, Mr. Del Toro. As you are certainly aware, almost everyone in Hollywood is discussing how James Cameron has revolutionized special effects with his new film AVATAR. Considering Weta worked on the CGI for that film, are you guys planning on utilizing any new technology from Avatar in bringing THE HOBBIT creatures to life?

All in all, keep up the good work. Thanks again, and happy holidays.

So kind of you, dear Guillermo, these reassurances of yours

concerning your point A- Andy Serkis as Gollum, and the still possible other returnees from the LOTR cast (oh, to see Liv and Viggo again as Arwen & Aragorn, falling in love; Orlando as Legolas, becoming friends with Aragorn; and of course Christopher Lee as Saruman, turning evil...!) as well as your points B and C.

All my gratitude to you for this!

another THANKS !

Thanks Sr. Guillermo, thanks for your time, Its just lovely to see how you manage to give us updates from time to time with the amount of work you`ve been up to.
I saw El Laberinto del Fauno again the other day on bluray (checking my new giant lcd 1080dpi, If I may be a little fancy here heheBlush ) I was stunned about all the imagery, the beautiful yet dark world surrounding the story(being also dark times), sometimes very cold, some times so warm you can`t help wanting to be there. Then I wondered ...Would your "tocayo" Guillermo Navarro still on track with The Hobbit project ??? I think he does, I really hope so...and I`m sure it would be wonderful... I can`t imagine your images without his paintbrushes.

thanks again Sr.!

Guillermo, YOU ARE THE MAN!!

This is tremendously exciting news. I had heard that you posted to this site occassionally but this is the first I have actually read one of your posts myself (being a newish member). I am thrilled to hear how the Hobbit is TRULLY coming along. We can scour the internet all we want but the buck stops here when it comes to the real deal. I have to say, probably the most exciting little bit I pulled out of your post was the "doing final selections on Dwarven War Artifacts and Gear" nugget you dropped. The Dwarves are BY FAR my favorite race of Tolkien's Middle Earth and I cannot wait to see how you and your chosen actors, develop PJ's vision of Gimili into many Dwarves and how they look, sound and interact with one another.

Not to mention.....does anyone else just think it is totally sweet that we will finally get to see "A Legion of Dwarves, fully armed, and filthy!" summoned to Woop some serious Goblin Butt!

Whoo RA! for Dain and his Boyz!

Thank you so very much GDT!

Thank you for your candor

I especially like this: "So, don't etch this in stone or anything we both have said in the past, in stone since we communicate what we can when the window of exposure to the press and fans happens."

And, isn't it amazing how much a supplied word like "only" can make such a difference?

Thank you Santa, for our first Christmas present!

I feel as if I've just trekked through the Wild and arrived in Rivendell. There's a long road a many adventures ahead, but this is a wonderful place to rest for a while. I won't be too greedy and ask for more. Instead I wish you a very Merry and Restful Christmas and a Happy and Inspired New Year.

And the same to all of you TOR.niacs. Its been great reading and chatting with you this year.

*Phew*

Many, many thanks for taking the time out from your crazy schedule to stop in here and reassure us that all is well. Things were seriously starting to get squirrely around here, and yours was the voice I was waiting and hoping for.

With Peter seemingly as "semi-official spokesman" for TH in the past few days, I didn't think you would take the time to come on here and talk to us...I consider it "above and beyond the call of duty", SIrSmile

So glad to know that there is no studo strife (yes, I was one of those worrying about this), and learning that they reacted with "great delight" to the script for Film 1 has filled me with same, and left a HUGE smile on my face I'll carry around the rest of the weekend...

Smaug...ani tests....Dwarven gear...ah, YESSSSCool. Warms the cockles of my heart, it does!

And I just want to close with this: considering James Cameron's useage of Peter's "Render Farm" computer to create the apparent wonder that is Pandora (Almas, you lucky thing, getting to go to an early screening? I go next Saturday), ...you will have your work cut out for Smaug. But I have no doubt, that come 3 yrs from now, Mr. Cameron may have to look to his laurels...Smaug, I hope, will put the Nav'i in the dust. Cool
(I wish you could share your reaction to "Avatar" here with us, if you get around to seeing it, but you will probably be too busy to post...but that's OK...but seeing as a lot of us are huge Cameron fans to begin with, it would be great to know).

Take care and I echo everyone else: enjoy your Holidays, take some time out to relax if possible, and God bless.
You are a true gentleman, Sir!

What did I miss? Ah geez

Thank God the voice of reason found a spare moment! We were all getting a little testy, that's for sure.

Everything in its right place, again.

Thanks for the info!

I'd like to chime in with everyone else here, and say thank for taking the time out of your busy schedule to dispel some of the misinformation and rumours that have been bandying about the press of late! Wink So glad to hear that Andy will be coming back as Gollum and Hugo as Elrond, I just couldn't image anyone else playing thoughs roles!!

But I'm intrigued about how you intend to inject Galadriel in to the movie, there's been talk about including a 'white council' scene, I guess we'll have to wait and see!?

I hope you all realize ...

... how fortunate we are to get news straight from the man himself!

(Imagine if Peter Jackson had popped into TORN back in the day to dispel rumors, give us quick updates, and engage in a bit of discussion....)

What a beautiful thing to do!

There is not much to add to the praise that has already been posted here, but I think this post proves once again what a caring, dedicated and understanding artist you are, Mr. Del Toro. There are so few filmmakers who can truly relate to film fans, but you are surely one of them. How lucky we Tolkien afficionadoes are to have you as our director! Good luck with the project - may all turn out for the best! We are waiting, anxiously but not impatiently...

Love,

Dmitri

Thank you for stopping by

and giving us all these tasty little tidbits! It is even more appreciated as we all know how terribly busy you are.
Hopefully you will be able to have a few quiet days with your family over the holidays before your crazy schedule is taking over again! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

I do not suffer from LotR obsession - I enjoy every minute of it.

A Holiday Wish for the Year

It's been a whole year of Hobbit mystery. We've learned a great deal. Just not what we think we wanted to know. Confirmation and renewal is natural at this time of year. So, I remembered another NZ Hobbit Adventure that I had and will pass it on to you. I too traveled a long way to visit Middle Earth and wondered if I had done the right thing. So here I was, standing on the Old Forest Road on Mt. Victoria gazing at Frodo's hiding place and fearing I had made a mistake. As I looked about the woodland and recognized the place where the Hobbits tumbled down the hillside and escaped Farmer Maggott I realized with a laugh that I wanted a Sign. Something that would justify my travels. With a shake of my head I turned to go. And my little wry laugh turned into a joyous roar of laughter that started at my toes and bent me over.......MUSHROOMS...

The littlest thing can confirm and renew our determination. When mixed with joy and humor our lives are full indeed. Thanks for your efforts and Happy Holidays!
