Welcome to our Long-expected and Long-deserved Party! It’s TORn’s 10th Anniversary Special Edition of Fiesta Friday!!

Then Friday, April 24, actually dawned. The sun got up, the clouds vanished, flags were unfurled and the fun began!

-- The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien ( sort of)

_________Heart__________

Well, the day of the big party weekend has finally arrived - a weekend full of activities to celebrate TheOneRing.net and to honor and thank those who founded it: Xoanon, Calisuri, Tehanu and Corvar. Hip, hip, hooray!

*throws confetti, then madly tries to strain it out of everyone’s champagne*

What a fun weekend we have planned for everyone! From now until Sunday every board will have something going on; even the Welcome Board (where Silverlode just posted the TORn Dictionary) to the Arena, to both Movie Boards and even to Feedback! (well, kind of, sort of, especially to Feedback where you’ll be sure to want to check as the weekend progresses as some, *cough* “Various Interesting Professionals” *cough* may show up).

So, without further delay, let’s get this party started!!!

*kicks Juke box* “Celebrate Good Times” by Cool & the Gang filters into the room

Have fun, TORnsibs and TORNadoes!

Orange juice with lots of pulp, please

I am here early today because I actually remembered Fiesta and it is my one day off all week! Of course, I would have to be sick for it. Could you also send some female lesser prairie chickens along? We haven't collared enough of them yet, and nesting season is starting.

Woo hoo

...which I like much better than 'Yahoo' these days. ;^)

I'd prefer a good, spicy ginger beer over champagne every day.

Here's to TORn. I don't get to be called a second ager because I was only a obsessive home page reader in that time. But I finally found the forums.

Cheers to the founding four and cheers to us all!

*toasts* To TORn!

I cannot even begin to tell everyone how TORn, and the folk here, have helped shaped the last 5 years of my life. I am so honored to be a part of this website for the better part of my teenage years.

I have quite a bit of work to do this weekend, but I'll be popping in every now and then to enjoy the festivities!

Let's start the party, I can't wait.

Yahoo! Happy anniversary, everybody!

I was trying to work from home this morning, and it wasn't happening, so I'm giving up and going into the office anyway.

But I had to stop in to the party first!!!

I'll have a celebratory non-alcoholic, high-caffeinated...something. Whatever you've got! I've been staying up playing LOTRO again, and I'm so tie-tie! (honk shu!)

And I'll check back in when I get to work later.

"Rabbit's clever," said Pooh thoughtfully.
"Yes," said Piglet, "Rabbit's clever."
"And he has Brains."
"Yes," said Piglet, "Rabbit has Brains."
There was a long silence.
"I suppose," said Pooh, "that that's why he never understands anything."

Wheee!

All right -- I returned from the Brown Lands of the deadline just in time. Happy Anniversary, one and all!

I first found my way here in early 2002, after FotR came out, and lurked for an entire year. That's seven years, then, to go along with the seven stones and the seven stars and the one white tree I now wear as a tattoo, in honor of LotR and TORn.

What a treat it was to meet Tehanu herself last spring in Middle, er, New Zealand, and to thank her personally for TORn. And what a treat it was to meet you, Altaira, and several other highly esteemed TORnsibs last summer, and ditto.

I'll just sip the champagne right now, thank you -- I'm still putting the finishing touches on the manuscript. But I'll be in and out over the weekend, never fear!

Well, Altaira

Since i am at work in a side office huddled over my 'puter giggling to myself (1st time for that) thinking about what is going to unfold, i will ask you for a bit of the bubbly without the kick (for now).

This place rocks. I have no reservations expounding that. It will be hot here today and throughout the weekend anticipating the warmth bubbling from this house.
SHORTS! Time to air out the knees i say. I am also in charge of crewcuts. No charge. Cookie tips accepted. Ok, who wants one? *Turns on trimmer* BIZZZZZZZZZ.

''What connects Nature to the spiritual, or requires the presence of the latter? In positive terms, as Alkis Kontos points out, when nature was still largely experienced as integral, alive and active, 'It was the spiritual dimension of the world, its enchanted, magical quality that rendered it infinite, not amenable to complete calculability; spirit could not be quanified; it permitted and invited mythologization.' And I would add, it still is and does.''
Patrick Curry-Defending Middle-Earth-Tolkien: Myth and Modernity - chapter: 'The Sea: Spirituality and Ethics.'

May the grace of Manwë let us soar with eagle's wings!

In the air, among the clouds in the sky
Here is where the birds of Manwe fly
Looking at the land, and the water that flows
The true beauty of earth shows
With the stars of Varda lighting my way
In all the realms this is where I stay
In the realm of Manwë Súlimo

"Yahoo! Yahoo! Yahoo?!"

Am I sensing a little promotional placement? Aw heck, we all sell it sometimes! Cheers TORn! Thanks to you I'm at work pretending to be an IT specialist.

No seriously..... I got a promotion because of my superior electronic communication skills and I owe it all to the only board to bother raising me. Thanks sibs for your constant grammatical supervision, page layout creativity and NICE REMINDERS ABOUT FLAMMING AND NETIQUETTE!!!!!!

And thanks to the Artists here who have been such an inspiration! I'm still chasing the Lee dream of designing for the silver screen. Alas those fateful fries.....Check out some pics from my latest puppet short, tentatively titled "how I survived the terragalactic spacewar." Don't blame me, a man wrote it - I just birthed the puppets and sets for it Wink I hope to preimere it dragoncon - I'll see ya there TORn!! hmmm, maybe I should check on that deadline....

[continues tipsy ramble] I luv you guys! I wouldn't know it was possible to use *hic* both sides of my brain without you (and a little hint from Tolkien)...

Woohoo!!

I *knew* there was a reason I felt like getting here today!

No champagne for this body (sadly), but I'll toast with a double whiskey to the years I've found a home here, to the years of building and community that made it possible for me to be welcome here, to a sunny and summer-hot celebration weekend, and to all the years to come. Slainte!

YES, YES!

These fabulous four are going to get their due by the time this weekend is over.

Actually we have stuff for both days so please stop in and have a word with us all.

We all have much to be thankful for, and this is the time to celebrate the factSmileHeart.

May the grace of Manwë let us soar with eagle's wings!

In the air, among the clouds in the sky

Looking at the land, and the water that flows
The true beauty of earth shows

I will not say: do not weep, for not all tears are an evil.

Their hearts, wounded with sweet words, overflowed, and their joy was like swords, and they passed in thought out to regions where pain and delight flow together and tears are the very wine of blessedness.

"Rabbit's clever," said Pooh thoughtfully.
"Yes," said Piglet, "Rabbit's clever."
"And he has Brains."
"Yes," said Piglet, "Rabbit has Brains."

Open bar all day, I say!

I'm always working during Fiesta -- couldn't even get time off for today!

But I will sneak in and ask you to pour something "extra'" in my cup of coffee, just for the occasion.

There will be lots of games, reprisals of old favorites, and other opportunities to share your memories of TORn, all over the place this weekend, so dig up your creativity, old posts and threads you've saved, and anecdotes about your life on TORn, and find a thread to post them on! Whether you've been here 10 years or 10 days, please join in the fun!

For those who may not be able to join us this weekend, I think the "after party" will last at least a few days, so stop by on Monday to see what you missed and add a post or two of your own -- there will be a few hobbits and a Ranger still on duty in the corner, no doubt.

Thanks for kicking things off in style, Altaira -- Happy 10th Birthday TORn!

No one minds a little soggy confetti in their champagne

as long as the champagne keeps coming!

Still slogging away at the renos, right now there's plastic sheeting draping all the walls, it feels like living inside a giant spider web (I don't think Shelob is lurking there, thank goodness.) I tried my hand at scraping the ceiling, but I paid in spades for it with burning hands and aching wrists for a couple of days.

I'm meeting WrightWords for brunch, then I'll be back later to check in on all the goings-on.

Three Cheers for our Fearless Leaders - 10 years and going strong!

Words escape me! Can you believe it? 10 years later and we're still here!!! If it hadn't been for Xo, Calisuri, Tehanu and Corvar, we'd all still be bouncing off the walls in our own personal Tolkien exile or treading water at *kaff* some other site.

THANK YOU Fearless Leaders for following your noses and giving us a home and community worthy of Tolkien's belief in friendship, imagination, devotion, integrity, and silliness. I think he'd have had fun here :)

I feel so blessed to have found this place and to know all of you.

That's one of my favorite quotes, Rosie

Although the entire book is my favorite quote, I suppose. I always think "tears are the very wine of blessedness" when I fog up listening to the soundtracks.

Do we walk in legends or on the green earth in the daylight?

A man may do both. For not we but those who come after will make the legends of our time. The green earth, say you? That is a mighty matter of legend, though you tread it under the light of day!

May your story inspire more lurkers, Alcarcalime

Quote
Alcarcalime: OhioHobbit and I found TORn about a year before FOTR came out, but didn't start looking at the boards for quite a while. Then we lurked for years. I am glad we finally got up the courage to join in. The best people in the world hang around here.

You and OhioHobbit don't even have any scars from the experience (except maybe that little one right there ShockedWink).

I think your experience mirrors that of many here. *waves to lurkers* Come on in, we don't bite (at least most of us don't, and we carry big sticks for those who do Wink). If not, enjoy lurking and enjoy the party.

And, you and OH enjoy your weekend, dear!

Folks, take a good look at this person

Although she holds much respect in your eyes, but before the weekend is over you will gaze upon a spirit worthy of a bow, for she is our maestro that brought this wide expanse of a weekend into existence.

She handled a torrent of incidentals amidst a rush of RL.
*Bows* Grand lady:)

In all the realms this is where I stay
In the realm of Manwë Súlimo

Ah ha! A chance for more champagne!

Like I need an excuse... Laugh Here's to the four founders! Here's to 'sibs everywhere! Hurrah for this home from home, and the many dear friends we all find here. Now THAT is worth a celebration indeed.

Alas, I'm going to miss pretty much all the celebrations; I have to work 9am to 10.30pm every day this weekend. I can't complain - next week is the last week of the semester and then I will have HOURS of free time. But honestly TORn, you might have picked a better spot *ahem* DATE for your founding! So I wouldn't be working at the time of the 10th anniversary. You just never think, do you?? Tongue

Cheers to everyone! Life is good - the sun is shining, I went to see 'How to be' last night and schmoozed my way into the cinema without having to wait in the enormously long line (nice to know I can still manage these things...), I had a fabulous weekend with entmaiden last week, and L.Ron and I are lining things up nicely for our Alaska trip. And TORn is going strong!

How strange that a website should become such a big part of our lives, in RL as well as in cyberspace. Hurrah for that. Time for a top up with the champagne methinks... Wink

Hooray ! For the party has begun !

Who knew that 10 years ago, four extremely talented and dedicated people would create such a magnificent place that many many people would end up calling their virtual home ? It makes one humble just to think about it all !

I happily join in on the toasting to Corvar, Calisuri, Xoanon and Tehanu for their love of this timeless story and their dedication to keeping it running so smoothly. I also toast all the Admin's who have kept it a place one wants to return to again and again, and to all the wonderful fabulous people that make this a special place to be !

TORn, my old friend, this will be a party to remember !

Heck, I'm quite sure I discovered TORn way back in late 1999 or early 2000, so just wow, can't believe it's been that long.

so true Altaira - excuse me if I wax lyrical for a moment...

...YOUR life has certainly changed thanks to finding these boards... Smile But yeah, people don't get how 'real' this is; through TORn we've seen births, deaths, marriages, house moves, unemployment, promotion, immigration issues(!), adoption, floods, hurricanes, etc. etc. All these and more we have experienced together, holding each other's hands virtually AND in reality. We've made friends, we've travelled and visited, we've attended parties, cons, even weddings, and TORn is no longer 'just' virtual reality. It goes way beyond that. If I were to count up my nearest, dearest friends, and the people on whom I really feel I can rely in this life, many of them would be people I've met here. What greater tribute to these boards could there be than that fact?

Cheers again! Heart

10 YEARS!

I'd like to quote Jeremy Piven from Grosse Point Blank '10 YEARS!!!'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pupHeSHOEE

We should get the audio of that and post it on the front page :)

I plan on writing something a little more heartfelt and post it up everywhere later this weekend. I have many many fond memories. It's funny how 10 years can change you, I was a then 20 year old college 'almost' graduate living with my parents. I am now a 30 year old with a wonderful baby boy, wife, job, white picket fence and so on. I'm going to try and post my 10 ten best memories..right now work calls...work? wt..!!!!

The these and others

I don't know that my friend in Tolkien Cathy L was a member of TORn's boards but I know she read the home page avidly and she was known on other boards. She was one of my first online friends-in-Tolkien and I mourned her greatly.

Also, Karen Wynn Fonstad, whom I met in Marquette.

A toast in remembrance.

It will be so much fun!

I'm still grumpy that I have to leave for vacation just on Sunday very early morning! Though I look forward to Croatia, it is a pity that I will miss most of the fun. Reading it next weekend is so long away ... Crazy

Anyway, a Very Great Weekend to all! And here's a little contribution to the party:

The confetti is the best part!

Mmmm, paper. Laugh

It sure is festive around here! (Thanks for the great images, Magpie!) I'll be popping in as much as I can over the weekend.

Gah, I'm working on so many things, and want to post about them, but one is a family matter that should probably stay private (though maybe I'll PM some of you that I know personally) and the others are still works in progress . . . so I keep typing, erasing, typing, erasing . . . Not trying to be cryptic, just not sure what I should share, or whether anyone would care either way . . .

Anyway, I'm proud of myself for staying calm with a lot going on, and getting stuff done though it's not done yet . . . and finding time to pop in here because I wouldn't miss this celebration for anything. You guys all rock, and I Heart this place.

Have a nice weekend, everyone!

A party, eh?

Well, I'll have a mug of 1420, if you'd please.

Best regards to all of the fine folk who have made this message board such a wonderful and meaningful place over the past 10 years. I wish us all many more!

Out of the darkness of my life, so much frustrated, I put before you the one great thing to love on earth: the Blessed Sacrament... There you will find romance, glory, honour, fidelity, and the true way of all your loves on earth, and more than that: Death: by the divine paradox, that which ends life, and demands the surrender of all, and yet by the taste (or foretaste) of which alone can what you seek in your earthly relationships (love, faithfulness, joy) be maintained, or take on that complexion of reality, of eternal endurance, which every man's heart desires.

I think the pinnacle of (for my personally) the awesomeness of TORn was when I had my highschool graduation and there in the audience were two TORnsibs. So many memories, so many adventures, so many things that I will never forget.

Somehow I'm managing to botch the quote feature - but I wanted to say that this is a very cool story!

One other thing - VERY IMPORTANT!

So in addition to celebrating the last wonderful 10 years, I think we should not lose sight of how much effort Altaira and her husband and others put into getting these new boards up and running. The old boards were great in their time, but these are even more wonderful.

Anyone who had multi-paragraph posts brutally and heartlessly gobbled up by the mythical time-out monster can attest to this fact!!! Unsure

All hail to the founders, admins and all who keep TheOneRing rolling!

SmileW00T!Smile Ten years - wow! Seriously, massive respect - and hobbity hugs! - to all those who make this such a special place to be. It's withstood trolling, flaming (wings or no wings), hard times and all sorts of challenges, and the boards and the community are still going strong! Proper 1420 that is, and no mistake!

For me, this is a pre-wedding fiesta, too! No, not mine - hah, bin there, dun that - but my daughter is getting married on May Day, so next Friday I'll be kicking up my heels (or more likely falling off 'em) at the post-wedding party.

Have a wonderful weekend, all, however you're spending it!
Cheers!

I've been told I'm buying, since this is my first Fiesta Friday.

So, since I live in So Cal, I'll set out a round of Corona beer, Margaritas (with Sombreros) and some homemade Mead I can get my hands on from a new friend who makes it himself.

I'll take a Sparkling Apple Cider for myself, since I don't drink.

Don't fall over, we want this party to last all weekend.

A man may do both. For not we but those who come after will make the legends of our time. The green earth, say you? That is a mighty matter of legend, though you tread it under the light of day!

Happy Anniversary, TORN!

It is always a delight to spend time among the wonderful, amazing and delightful people who gather here, but never more than on this day! My thanks to each and every one of you, because you have all had a part in making this site what it is - unique and very, very special!

Cheers, TORNsibs!

My Personal Fav Top 10 TORN Moments

Hi all, this is a pretty personal list, so it should really be considered 'My Top 10 Best Experiences Because of TORN'...but that is too long winded. I may think of a few more as the weekend progresses, 10 years is a LONG time to be doing this! Cheers!

10. Seeing FOTR trailer first time, crying

Yes, this is a tad embarrassing, but I did cry when seeing the FOTR trailer for the first time on TV. It was the night it made its debut during a commercial break in 'Angel'. I remember feeling so immensely proud that the film the team had 'worked' on looked so amazing.

9. Seeing my name/torn in various newspapers, TV, magazines, websites

Being modest, I have no been accused of it. However like many people, I do like to see some recognition for the hard work we put in. I can recall the various times my name or TORN (or more importantly, TORN labeled CORRECTLY) were in magazines like Wired, Yahoo!, Hollywood Reporter and so on. Who wouldn't like to be asked to appear in a photo shoot about LOTR? TV crews are so much fun, the stress however of doing a live broadcast is incredible, and not a pleasant experience. However it is still a thrill to see yourself on TV, without having to have done anything illegal!

8. Visiting New Line Offices

New Line Cinema, yes, say what you will, but visiting those offices was a lot of fun for me. Ironically enough years before TORN I sent them my resume asking for work, and they mailed me back saying they would contact me if there were any open positions, I kept that letter all those years.

At the time I visited the offices LOTR was in full swing, with TTT about to be released and the FOTR DVD on the way, actually Guillermo Del Toro's Blade II was just released, so times were high at the offices.

7. Holding Oscars

The 3 Oscar parties we hosted were a BLAST, and what's more the actual Oscar winners came to see us. My wife and I were so excited to see everyone, and the golden man!

6. Various TORN Dinners

The Stinking rose, The Cat n Fiddle, and many other places hold very fond memories for me. Basically any place where all the TORN staff can come together in one place is special for me.

5. Meeting stars like Ian McKellen, Viggo, John Rhys-Davies, Dom Monaghan

I've had the honor of meeting most members of 'The Fellowship' from the films, and people like John Howe, Alan Lee, Richard Taylor, Daniel Falconer and others. My wife and I took a memorable trip to Canton, NY to meet Viggo Mortensen, that was such a blast. Good times.

4. Meeting Cliff, Chris, Erica, Bill, whole team the first time

The first time we all gathered together in one place was LA, and it was a blast, again..meeting TORN staff is ALWAYS golden for me. Lets do it again in NYC!

3. Oscar Night for Return of the King

What a night, we spent the weekend preparing for the party, from vacuuming to decorating and dressing up. The TORN staff all wrote special messages to PJ and the team, and we partied the night away.

2. Lunch with PJ

While in New Zealand (see memory #1) I was lucky enough to have lunch with Peter Jackson. We ate Indian food and chatted about all things Tolkien, Kong and the like. It was at his Part Road Post studio, a truly remarkable place. I have met Peter a few times previous, but this was my one and only one-on-one time with him, it was truly magical.

1. Trip to New Zealand

Ubisoft's King Kong contest was posted specifically on KongisKing.net, however the grand prize was any LOTR fan dream; a trip to New Zealand with a special tour of the WETA studios! This was an amazing experience to say the least, from Te Papa to the Wellington quays and driving up Mt. Victoria, what a blast!

Thanks for your (and all similar) sentiments toward me

But I feel a bit guilty about them. I was doing what I love and what is mostly pretty easy for me. Other people - most pointedly weaver and Altaira - have borne a much greater part of this load than I. And I know for a fact - and suspect beyond what I know - that many of the other people in this group have worked themselves beyond any comfortable level of stress or fatigue to prepare and execute their part in all this. (turns to stare pointedly at you, for example... moving and all!)

My part is just a little flashier and showier. Yours/their's was harder.

So... I'll turn towards the rest of you organizers/co-conspirators and clap my hands along with the rest of the party goers. (I might have said 'rest of these yahoos... but that word is forbidden right now)

Me too

There's some folklore-sharing and other good stuff going on in Old Pascua this weekend, so I won't be here as much as I want.

But don't be surprised, folks, if a lady with antlers pops up in your dreams and carries on the party in your sleep! Or I might take some other form. Or some of my dream-friends might pop in. If you happen to dream of Bilbo, Gandalf, Elrond (quite merrier, with Celebrian at his side) or Galadriel, or a trio of three hard-partying elves (a blonde male, a honey blonde female, and a brunette male) or a shy, brown-haired hunter-elf, or a merry blonde lady healer elf, they're all regulars in my dreams and might well visit yours--I'll send out the invitations.

you have to understand

He lives for the reaction. He will poke and prod and annoy until I get snappy and then he smiles. Ignoring him never works. He always last much longer than I can. And he is impervious to any attempt of mine to annoy him and show him what it's like.

I figured he had enough good qualities that I might as well find this one endearing.

My thanks to all the staffers!

I want to wish a very happy birthday to one of my top favourite web sites of all time, theOneRing.net. Heart What a decade this has been! I think the site has grown and expanded beyond anyone's wildest dreams. To me, TORn is the embodiment and role model for all modern fansites in all fandoms. Anyone can report news and collect information and set up a discussion board, but to do that passionately for a decade... that's quite a feat! And it doesn't stop there, with TORn we've seen so many true multimedia projects over the years: the books, the video reports, the Ringers film... and not to mention all the events: the line parties, the book parties, the Oscar parties... What sets TORn apart from all other fansites are the close relationships the staffers have forged with both PJ's team and the publishing houses that print Tolkien's works - both which have been unprecedented in the scale we've been able to enjoy.

Personally I'm most grateful for the community sites hosting service you guys offered back in the day - that's how our precious Kontu started out! :)

Here's to hoping for at least another 10 groundbreaking, wonderful years for TORn and us all!

Cheers Xo, Cali, Tehanu and Corvar!

And to you Altaira, and all the members current and past of the discussion boards! It's been a fantastic ride and it's wonderful beyond words to see this little fan project of a website mark its 10th anniversary.

On a side note, it's the 25th here and Anzac Day. I got up for the dawn service and drove home to a beautiful sunrise turning the cloud cover orange. And then slept for another couple of hours - 5am starts on Saturdays aren't my usual schedule.

Happy day, all!

Dream parties

The first time I ever hosted a dream-party was on a Tolkien site (the now-defunct official New Line Cinema site, which had no protection from spam or trolls and eventually died of neglect) I expected a night of fun dreams and came back with a life-changing experience (in a dream about Lorien.) In a good way.

So, anybody who's willing, watch your dreams tonight. Go to sleep with a special intention of dreaming your way into the TORn party/Middle Earth, leave this as the last thing on your mind as your head settles into your pillow, relax, and see what happens. Report here in the morning if anything Tolkienish or TORnish happens.

Life is beautiful and dangerous! Beware! Enjoy!

Well as long as he doesn't

pull his pants up real high (like to the armpits). My wife said she would leave if I ever did that again. So I have been on the high-pants wagon a good 20 years now. You know I wouldn't suggest this to everyone, but in my family growing up, the women, as needed, would hit the men (or boys) on the head with a wooden spoon. Just a quick sharp whack & it hurts like heck. Now my grandmother did bury a fork in my Dad's arm once. But he was really pushing her over the edge, supposedly and she was sorry afterwards. Laugh

I don't know that I've every gotten physical. Well, I kicked him once when he was tickling me on the couch but that was a reflex action. :D

But I can dish it out verbally in a variety of ways with the best of them. I'm quite formidable when pushed too far.

Living in a family of three men (two grown sons + husband), I try to allow for some testosterone to permeate the place. It helps that they're all geeks not jocks. So I'm actually kind of interested in a lot of the stuff they do (like build and pilot 385 lb combat robots). But pretty much... I gotta say, Mama rules. (Can you tell I'm a first child?)

It is true for me as well as far

as who really rules the castle. We have a saying that when Mom is unhappy, everyone is unhappy. I also found the saying 'sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me' to be totally wrong. And the 'First Born' thing as well... I heard a comedian say when he boarded a plane (in the old pre-911 days) he used to poke his head in the cockpit and say "So how are you First-Borns doing today ?". When I heard that I happened to be working entirely with aircrews (military) and the next morning polled the 6-7 there when I got to work. It was like all but one were First-Borns. I was a middle-kid. I don't know what that is supposed to mean. Laugh

You can find a lot about birth order. Here's a site: http://www.childdevelopmentinfo.com/...ment/birth_order.htm

I don't know how other people feel about the birth order theory but I definitely have the bossy tendencies of a first child. I'm pretty easy going and love collaborating but if someone tries to boss me around I react immediately. I finally realized it was a perfect first child trait.

A Bailey's Irish Cream with whipped cream, please.

I'll 'Indulge"--for this one night! TongueWinkCool

I will have more time to plow though 300+ posts later on this weekend :)Laugh--but just want to say:

HANNON LE, my friends. You FOUR have given me so much more than you will ever know. I first discovered this site after being hit with an irresistable desire to find Tolkien material on the Web, anticipating the upcoming filsm, after coming home from a series of U2 concerts in Boston in early June of 2001--on the train to and from Beantown, I swore every fifth persson was reading LOTR in my car. The books were everywhere--the paperbacks with the arresting movie stills on them. Seeing those gave me SHIVERS. I knew I just HAD to find people to share this amazing thing with.

When I found TORN,later that month, I took the name Fimbrethil, because my hackles were boiling due to a treasured grove of trees on the campus of my old alma mater being bulldozed to make a huge parking lot, This destoryed the street around the corner of my house, IMO. I became someone notorious on the old boards for my infrequent but VERY lengthy-essay-like postsSly. Many was the night I stayed up bleary-eyed, breathless and agog at what this wonderful site had to offer.

And more than ever I wished that I could get to meet some of you--a wish that is FINALLY going to be relaized in September.

This site and these wonderful people have given me more comfort, joy and enlightenment than you will ever know. At times it has been like a light in the darkness, After my mother's death, it was a great source of comfort to me and helped me navigate the roads and the days. I've laughed. I've cried, and it has been a wonderful and wonderous journey.

Long may it continue. The Fourth Age will be better than the first three.

I don't remember wither my initial posting date in June 2001, or in June of 2007--so I have never been able to do a mathom. But I am working on a poem....it will goup in a few days. (and yes, I promised someone my Easter poem, and you'll get it --don't worry.

I'll have more to say in coming days but THANK YOU MY DEAR FRIENDS.

Thank you so much--may the good Lord bless you and your comings and goings.

Be Careful What You Wish For

I fell asleep just awhile ago and so help me, this is what I dreamed: I saw a roly-poly fan boy, looking like a young Peter Jackson, snuggled contentedly in bed, his head on a big, overstuffed pillow, the sweetest smile on his sleeping face. Then he opened his eyes and saw that he shared his bed with a rather sensitive-looking sleeping version of the avatar for Smeagirl/Girllum! I woke up startled, to say the least.

I am not making this up!

It's been ten awesome, fantastic years already...amazing!

Lovely to see you all enjoying yourselves. We did a good thing when we started TORN....little did we know what it would develop into. The fact that it's gone so far is testament to the quality of the fans - we couldn't have done it without you.

Like many of you, TORn has changed my life in ways I could never have foreseen....like Xoanon, I'm now married (to somebody I met through TORn, in my case!) and I have a little baby, life is totally different, I've moved to Wellington, changed careers, met hundreds of wonderful people.....I'm raising a glass to that and to all of you!

It was a bet

Calisuri bet that the 1,000 pieces of Minas Tirith would not sell out (there might have been a time limit), and they sold out well ahead of the deadline. So he had to wear the dress. The make-up and wig was his own idea Wink

I have a special thanks for you.

My story is too long to go into here but the years of 2002-2004 changed my life. It's hard to tease out any one factor that was more influential than the others. The books... the movies... my experiences with online discussion groups... the friends I met in Tolkien... They all worked together to create this perfect storm for me. TORn was certainly part of that storm. (And at this point, I was just an avid reader of the home page.) It fed my need for more but mostly it helped me not feel so alone... so odd.

But storms don't endure. And I knew that this bliss I felt myself in would not last.

Your article, "Where to From Here", spoke what I was feeling exactly. I passed the link to that article out to every friend I could think of. I've kept it in my bookmarks all these years and have linked to it and quoted from it many times. To quote from it here today seems appropriate:
For many people, the books and the movies turned their lives around in ways they could never have forseen. They followed their strong attraction to The Lord of the Rings and what it represented for them, and their feelings pointed them towards new friends, new pastimes, new talents, new jobs, new countries, a new life entirely.

What (do we) look forward to now that the movies are as good as done? Well, what have you learned from them? Not the story of the Ring; you knew that already. What is the lesson in the story of the making of the movies? That's the story of you getting involved in the excitement, the guesswork, the speculation, the ideas, the process of seeing them come into the light. The story of you spending time thinking about Middle-earth, and your delight in discovering that other people cared about it as much as you do. This story is the point, and it is what the great mythographer Joseph Campbell called 'following your bliss.'

We've spent five years watching something that was fun. We enjoyed it whole-heartedly and without self-interest. We didn't question whether it had any point. It just was, and we were child-like in our acceptance of it. Because our guard was down, it enriched our lives before we knew it. Now the challenge is to ask ourselves what it is that we love to do the way the film-makers loved to do their work. It's time to notice the silly drawings we used to do, but put aside when we grew up. Time to remember the dreams we had of learning to weave a medieval tapestry, or the idea for that perfect adventure game -- and let those ideas come out and play. Play hard. We've watched PJ's people do it, working long hours into the night. We know Tolkien did it, with every spare moment and spare scrap of paper he had. And remember -- for many years his life appeared something completely boring and unproductive to the casual observer. He published little, and outside of his philological work he appeared absorbed in his family. The only hint of difference was the regularity with which he met his like-minded friends at the Eagle and Child pub. There they would drink and argue and read out their work to each other, sometimes with no real hope of a wider audience. But Tolkien in his own private mind remained committed to the elaboration of his fantasy world.

But this all sounds as if all it takes to create great art is to try hard. It sounds like all you need to do to become a writer or artist yourself is to work at it, and if you're not succeeding it's because you're not trying hard enough. I don't believe that myself however, and I'm not saying that Tolkien's example should drive you to transform yourself into a writer or something. It might, but on the other hand your talent might be something quite different, something you've used all along but not given due honour. You could have a talent for living a life of comfort and balance, like a hobbit. A talent for fellowship, for loyalty, for peacemaking among friends and family. There are lots of gifts that, practiced with skill, leave no lasting monument that one can show off, like a book or a film. They are worth no less for all that.

Meanwhile, every journey begins with the first step, as Frodo (and even more Sam) discovered when they set out from Bag End, hardly knowing anything of the road ahead. If your dream is to build a hobbit hole then you don't have to have a piece of land and a degree in engineering by tomorrow. You can at least talk to other people who are doing it for a few years first. To ride elf-fashion, without saddle or bridle -- well, you could start by getting lessons to ride normally. Practise the hospitality of a hobbit, throw memorable dinner-parties and nobody will care your house doesn't look like a palace. Follow your curiosity, find something that interests you and throw yourself into it wholeheartedly!
Your voice spoke to me along with some good friends in Tolkien and along with the examples set by the filmmakers and Tolkien himself. In October of 2004 I made a huge leap of faith and enrolled in a degree program that I thought I might love but which I'd had no background in. It was rough at times, but today I'm doing what I love. You can't ask more than that.

So thanks for adding your voice to that chorus... but mostly, thanks for 'getting it'. I found a new word, recently, for describing how certain things feel to me: sublime. I can use it here with ease. Your article was sublime.

Cheers, Tehanu.

Cheesy Bread

for all still hanging around the bar.

Thanks Aerin for the Black and Tan. I took up your offer.

This guilty pleasure isn't for anyone on a diet for sure, but it's so very tasty. Great for such an occasion. :)

Cheesy Garlic Bread: 1 1/2 C. Mayo, 1 C. (4 oz.) shredded sharp cheese, 1 C. thinly sliced green onions, 3 garlic cloves, minced, 1 loaf French bread (halved lengthwise), 1/3 C. parsley, Paprika (to taste), Sliced green olives (...this was my addition) Mix mayo, cheese, onions, olives, garlic, and seasonings in a bowl. Spread on bread halves. Wrap each half in foil. Refrigerate 1-2 hours. Unwrap and place on a baking sheet. Bake at 400 for 8-10 min. or until puffed, but not brown. Cut into slices. 12-15 servings.

"Too many times we've been postally pipped
We've loaded the saddles, the mickeys are slipped
We're swapping the turf for the sand and the surf and the sin
'Cause the fix, the fix is in..."

Late to the party, as usual. . .

Well, according to the dictionary I'm a First Ager.

I don't remember when I found TORN, or how, although I do know it was long before the first movie came out, but some time after Stuart Townsend had been canned. Ten years is longer than I've ever done anything, really.

I love seeing people come out of the woodwork for these celebrations. Hmmm, I guess I'm becoming one of them, since I rarely post now.

Dear Tehanu

Thank you for your part in this creation but also for what light you gave in your writings:) :

And i will place within them as a guide,
my Umpire, Conscience, whom if they will hear'
light after light well us'd they shall attain,
and to the end persisting, safe arrive. (Milton)

"That could so easlily be the hobbits story, and it's way of seeing how Tolkien was keeping his own beliefs at one remove, drawing from Milton rather than from the Bible: exercising both a reticence about his own beliefs and the delicacy of allowing each reader the freedom to belief as they choose.''

Also:

''I was reading something about the arts as they are practiced in the east; the book talked about the way the artist who wanted to make a statue of, say Vishnu, would meditate until they had removed their ego from the process of creation, and in that state they could expect the idol image of Vishnu to come into their hand and mind. The idea was not to invent a new and individual image of Vishnu, but to achieve the closest approximation of some ideal of Vishnu that already exists perfectly somewhere, perhaps within the foundations of the universe.
At the moment when one feels that mysterious knowledge start to guide one's working hand and mind all the things a person might normally desire--power, wealth, status-- seem irrelevant.''

Eek! Sorry to hear that.

That's not the sort of "dream party" I had in mind. I don't remember my dreams from the past couple of nights, but I don't think they were especially good . . . probably because I've got a lot going on IRL. I'll keep trying to get to the nicer place you mentioned though.

For now, as Alice Cooper said, welcome to my nightmare . . . Tongue Crazy

>Xoanon got to do a couple of things I didn't<

And you may get to do things that Xoanon didn't get to do. There's a lot more TORn fun yet to be had. Cool

It's been a bit overwhelming around here this weekend...

*grabs lemonade* and y'all know I don't do sentiment. I can raise a glass. That's as far as I go. Cheers! =)

*pours second glass of lemonade* Hey, I don't do 90+ degrees F. well either! And in April it's downright abominable!

Not what I had in mind, either

And later, that night, I had a lucid dream where I kept thinking, "Man, I have GOT to memorize all of this for TORn tomorrow!" Only to wake up and remember nothing whatsoever except for the imperative to memorize.

Oh well, better luck next time.

Happy birthday to all of us!

I'm a bit belated as I'm supposed to be sailing to Rarotonga and wasn't expecting to make the party at all, but the ship got turned around so I'm here. Huge thanks to the PTB for creating this place; huge thanks also to my fellow TORNadoes for making the boards such fun places to hang out. After almost ten years here myself I still check in daily - a sign, if any were needed, that what's been created at TORN is something very special. I don't think I'll ever find another site like it, or make such good online - and now "real life" - friends anywhere else. Cheers, and here's to the next ten years.

Four Ages of TORn I've read these boards....

and now I have no time....to read all the anniversary posts, that is! I was here for a good part of the festivities and it's still going to take me days to catch up. This truly has been a Party of Special Magnificence!

As we come to the end of this weekend of jubilation, I feel the need for a quiet drink in a cosy corner nook by the fire. If anyone else is feeling a bit exhausted and overwhelmed by all the partying, feel free to pull up a chair and join me here for a quiet pint and to savor the satisfaction of a worthy cause well celebrated.

Here's to our next decade! Cheers, TORn! Heart

one of mine is on your list...

I meant to post this the other day, but the party sort of got out of control and I could only come back now!

I was at the Canton NY Viggo-event you mention on your list...I had just discovered TORn at that time --I had no idea about its place in Tolkien fandom or the world of the Internet or who any of the people were behind it, of course..

I was there with two of my kids, one of their friends, two Viggo fans and their families, and my husband who got stuck watching our youngest while we all stood in line for autographs..

Somewhere along the line, this very nice guy from theonering.net came up to us and took a picture of my kids and it ended up on the site...it's still around in the scrapbook I think...so I met a founder of the site and had no clue! (Ah, newbie-ness...)

Anyway, I remember you being really nice to my kids and me, and I decided I'd give this onering.net thing more of my time after that..and it turned out to be one of the best choices I ever made...so thanks!

(oh, and meeting Viggo was pretty cool, too....)Smile

I'm not sure.

I suppose that their contract says they're supposed to start clean-up after the weekend, but how can they when not all the barrels have been emptied and some of the feast still lingers on the table? I just saw one come back with arms full of mugs to pass out to the others. Oh, and there's the head butler from Thranduil's house, on loan to help keep the tavern running after our lovely Altaira became too...er...horizontal to continue her duties. This might take awhile.

*mixes up a belated dirty Stoli martini from the never-ending vodka bottle*

Thank goodness for the eternal nature of the Fiesta bar!

I missed the party proper, but the bar never closes! I always seem to miss the cool stuff, though: TheOneRing Party, the major moots, Altaira’s Map….Had to go out of town to visit my elderly mom this time. We go twice a year to check on her, make repairs around her house, and try to cheer her up. Impossible, that last bit, but we try. I’m slowly catching up here, though. What a wonderful party! Especial appreciation to our barkeep! Hooray, Altaira!

UT and I want to do that. I suggested we do it ourselves (I saw a scraper for it at a store), but he thinks it’s beyond our powers. We’re definitely not handymen. What think you?

I helped turn a mattress and held up a window blind for UT. That's about all the help I could be. UT is an excellent son-in-law.

TORn's 10th Anniversary and Founders Day Collection

On April 26, 1999, TheOneRing.net (TORn) was born and quickly became the place to go to find news, pictures or discussion about J.R.R. Tolkien or all things film-related as Peter Jackson prepared for and filmed The Lord of the Rings. Created by Xoanon (Michael Regina-Canada); Calisuri (Chris Piortta-U.S.); Erica Challis (Tehanu-NZ); and William Thomas (Corvar-U.S.), TORn is still going strong and is enjoying the anticipation of Jackson's adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit.

TORn's actual 10th Anniversary is on April 26, 2009, but the party spanned from Fiesta Friday on the 24th thru Monday the 27th. On Sunday, April 26th, the festivities turned from an Anniversary Party into the first official Founders Day observance; which will be honoured annually until the last ship sails into the West.

Unbeknownst to our Fearless Leaders and most of the TORn community, the lead-up to the Party was hinted at and teased by some brilliant footer pics created by Magpie that randomly appeared without explanation in message-board posts by some conspirators. A new footer appeared each day starting 9 days out from the official start of the party on April 24th, followed by an announcement of the first official Founders Day on April 26th. The weekend was filled with games, memories, and salutations by notables and long-lost siblings of the TORn family.

The following are the majority of the links to our 10th Anniversary Party and our first Founders Day Celebration. Enjoy :)

I think I've been on most of this time, since before Movie #1

I can't remember exactly how long I've been using TORN, but I was here well before Fellowship of the Ring came out, when we were all hunting online for news reports

particularly since the new boards changed I don't know when I registered, but even then, I was reading the news feed on a daily basis for months before I joined the messageboard

at first I wasn't sure which LOTR fansite to go to (there were dozens in the initial explosion, well now too, but then none had the semi-legitimacy TORN has now that the production team gives news here) ......but I've been here since at least 2000, and I remember that happy excited feeling of looking through the spy set reports for how locations in FOTR would look, then debating (endlessly) how accurate it was to the books (in some cases, its like the images were taken out of my head when I was reading it)
