Welcome, double welcome and triple welcome to our third annual Homecoming Fiesta Friday!

SmileCool
Woot! It’s time again for that one special Fiesta each year where we welcome back TORn alumni, celebrate the folks who are regulars here (new and old) and possibly even lure out a lurker or two *looks through screen* You know who you are! LoL! Laugh

What a year it’s been, eh? (That ‘eh’ is for you Canadians Wink). We had the announcement that PJ and New Line were going to produce The Hobbit, we had the demise of New Line, we found out that Guillermo Del Toro will direct two Hobbit movies and he’s even joined in on the discussions on our Hobbit Movie board. Speaking of the Hobbit Movie board, it’s new too since we gathered here last. And last, but not least, we’re only five registrations away from having 3,000 users on the boards (give or take a few pirate names and registration boo boos, lol). Laugh

So, since we have so much to celebrate, I guess we’d better get started! No worries if you come in late: the party will last all weekend (until it falls off the baord, that is).

*kicks juke box* the Welcome Back Kotter theme starts to play

Enjoy Fiesta and don’t you alumni and lurkers be strangers. Stick around and join in the anticipation of The Hobbit, and all the exciting things we'll have to celebrate next year!! Smile

Welcome back,
Your dreams were your ticket out.

Welcome back,
To that same old place that you laughed about.

Well the names have all changed since you hung around,
But those dreams have remained and they're turned around.

Who'd have thought they'd lead ya, Back here where we need ya?

Yeah we tease you a lot cause we've got you on the spot. Welcome back!
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back!

Happy Friday, eh?

Just had time to dash in before running out the door -- I've had the week off and it's been great, got a lot done, even *whispers* some Christmas shopping! But it's back to the grind on Monday. I'll be lucky if I get another day off before the holidays. But the end is in sight! I'm retiring in January. Then I'll probably look for a part-time job.

Here's hoping lots of alumni (I almost said "old-timers" but thought better of it) come out of the woodwork to say hi!

Coffee to go, please Altaira!

If the names have all changed since I hung around --

-- how will I know who anyone is?!

Now and then NE lets me know what's happening in the Reading Room, and I look at my schedule and at my ability to get through any reading by the time work is done, and whimper. (On Fairy Stories!! You couldn't have done that while I was on holiday, in ... I forget? If I want to catch up on it in, maybe, December? will it all have fallen off the boards? But at least you've reminded me that I'm missing something right now, and I think I'd like it back ... )

*hugs to Altaira*

And make mine a pint of your best.

Great! A newbie. Drinks are on Hengist! ;-)

That's only if you spill you huge stein of 1420 in the gale force winds, lol. It's been windy here too and we finally got our first tiny dusting of snow. But, the weekend is supposed to be warm and glorious. Hope you have a good one there too, Hengist! Smile

Hello Altaira!

Hi sibs! I actually made it because my shoulder rehab is not 'til 2. SO, please if you will please dear barkeep a hot apple cider mug with cinnamon, nutmeg and a hint of whiskey.
I need something soothing because i will probably go to back to work on light duty to start by being a sexcretary and do filing so awhile.
Past that it is master sil's 12th birthday today and his voice is changing to boot. He got an ipod Shocked$$ for his gift + hellboy II -3 dvd. Anyone can wish him a 'happy' and i will relate it.

Fantastic Fiesta Friday

I even have to finish my first year here. So makes me that a newbie or a regular. Well, at least not an alumni.
But I have to say, I love it here. And with that certainly as a high-light Fiesta Friday. In my timezone really so well done. Here it is 6 PM, so I just have come home from work and the weekend has really started.

To everybody a grant Fiesta and a great weekend!
Let's have fun. And to many years more to come.

Working from home this morning.

And I'm getting a little cranky because I can't get my chair and cushion and blankie comfy. Crazy

We have snow! That is to say, there is a sprinkle of white on the grass and on my car. But for the first snowfall in Denver on November 14, it's not very impressive. If the sun comes out, it'll melt before I get out of the house for lunch.

Welcome back to all the oldbies and alums and other miscellaneous Fiesta-ers! Pull up a drink and have a chair! (Er...)

I'll have my usual iced tea, please, Altaira!

I'm still plugging away at my NaNoWriMo "novel" but it's not very interesting and even I'm starting to get bored. Tongue

Have a great weekend, all!

"Rabbit's clever," said Pooh thoughtfully.
"Yes," said Piglet, "Rabbit's clever."
"And he has Brains."
"Yes," said Piglet, "Rabbit has Brains."
There was a long silence.
"I suppose," said Pooh, "that that's why he never understands anything."

Woo hoo!

Happy homecoming to us!

I need a good strong coffee today; I went to a high school play last night in a town (Brush) that's two hours from home, and got back way after midnight. I didn't know anyone in the play, or the town, or anything. Here's how it happened; my daughter lives in a nearby town, and has been having a bit of a lonely time adjusting to her new home. We spoke on the phone, and she said she was thinking of going to the school play, which was "Little Women". I thought it was great that she was finding something to do out there in the boonies, and besides, I loooove Little Women, so I decided to go see it with her, and Uncle Baggins came too. It was pretty good for a play at a very small high school. The script was straight out the book, so I found myself anticipating the lines (better than the actors sometimes) since I know the book so well. What fun! The sets were great: they had asked the local farming folks to borrow antiques from their houses, and people came up with all kinds of cool furniture and stuff.

Tomorrow my daughter and I are planning to participate in the National Day of Protest over California's Proposition 8. These are happening all over the country, in every state, at the same time (11:30 Mountain time for us). If anyone else is interested in participating, here's a link:

Join the impact

This was a grass-roots effort by two bloggers, and hundreds of thousands of people are expected to participate. I debated whether to post here about it, and decided maybe I could get away with it on Fiesta Friday.

So I'll dig out my rainbow-colored stocking cap and join the parade. I just have to decide which town to go to, since there are more than one not too far from my home.

15,500 words and counting

Novel Writing Month is going well, I guess. I've finally hit a stride in my writing, but I need to write 10,000 words this weekend to get caught up, so I'll be looking for spare hours to write.

In the meantime, I'll have a beer, please. The weather is getting colder and my older sis is moving away to Chicago next weekend. She'll be the first member of my immediate family to live more than two hours away. It's going to be an adjustment.

Happy Friday, everyone! I've been waiting for this week to end. It sure took it's time. Cool

Hi auntie

I remember that hat:).
Give 'em 'ell, i'll tell ya.
Say hi to uncle baggins from us also please.
Gad, i cannot remember the last time i went to a play

"Tolkien, like Lewis, believed that, through story, the real world would become a more magical place, full of meaning. We see its patterns and colors in a fresh way. The recovery of a true view of the world applies both to individual things, like hills and stones, and to the cosmic - the depths of space and time itself. For in sub-creation, in Tolkien's view, there is a "survey" of space and time. Reality is captured on a miniature scale. Through stories like The Lord of the Rings, a renewed view of things is given, illuminating the homely, the spiritial, the physical, and the moral dimensions of the world."

Sounds like you and little Dora had a fun time at the play. I have to admit, I'd have to look Brush up on a map, but it was nice of you to go there to support your daughter.

*bounces in*

I knew I woke up early today for a reason! And I noticed the member count, too; think we can have some sort of celebration at 3000? Cool

Fandom wise this has been a very, very productive week for me. I finished my first LOTR music video which was an absolute blast to create (it's up on the Fan Art board if you are interested), and I definitely plan on making more. I've also been writing fan fiction like mad- it is a never ending flow of ideas nowadays! I love it.

As for RL, everyone in this household is sick. I might have something, but it's not fully developed... hopefully it will stay that way.

A fire broke out up north and has already burned 100 or so homes :/ It's not near enough to be a cause of worry for myself, but if the winds shift our way I should be able to see the smoke.

Cheers! Hope you all have a fantastic weekend!

Ooog.

I'm sorry to hear that. When I was in my twenties, Uncle Baggins and I had to do something like that; though he was able to come home on the weekends. He was working about two hours away from home, and almost killed himself falling asleep at the wheel, and decided he couldn't commute, so he stayed at a dive motel during the week with other construction workers. It was pretty lonely for both of us, and also stressful because when he came home on weekends we had to get used to each other again. As much as you love somebody, that can still be a problem.

Anyway, wishing the best for you and your family.

You're a joy... and we're so lucky to have you and all of our Admins/Founders here to keep this place lit up.

So may I have a cold Pink Lemonade so I can toast you and all of our sibs... old and new... and to celebrate TORn.

Praise you all! And have a GREAT WEEKEND!!

Ohhh... My daughter and son-in-law had to do that.

Kind of reversed, though. She started a new job in Baltimore (leaving Michigan) and took their 2 kids with her as they got established whilst hubby had to stay behind and get the house sold and look for work in Baltimore online. It was about 6 months before he left and went out there to join them. It seems like a short time given what people are going through now... but it was forever to them.

BUT... I will tell you that they are 5 years later and happier than they've ever been. Both in their location and (especially) with each other. It was worth it in the long run... but getting there was nasty business.

You hang in there. It'll be okay :) Things happen for a reason...

Happy Froday everyone!

I haven't really been away, but it's hard for me to get to Fiesta, as I'm usually buried in work on Friday. I'm making an effort today to wave at everyone old and new.
***waves!***

Chilly day here in Detroit, and kind of grey. Can you send a hobbit over here with some kind of flaming concoction?

"That is one thing that Men call 'hope.' Amdir we call it, 'looking up.' But there is another which is founded deeper. Estel we call it, that is 'trust.' It is not defeated by the ways of the world, for it does not come from experience, but from our nature and First Being. If we are indeed the Eruhin, the Children of the One, then He will not suffer Himself to be deprived of His own, not by any enemy, not even by ourselves. This is the last foundation of estel, which we keep even when we contemplate the End. Of all His designs the issue must be for His children's joy."

I can always

appreciate a nice scotch. Don't know many brands.....but my father-in-law gives me a bottle of glen fidditch every year for Xmas.
I've been attending the Ottawa Wine and Food for over a decade now. Started as attending as a student when in University in Ottawa, and have been going back every year since. Its just brilliant. The women get dressed up in gorgeous dresses, the men are in shirts and ties (mostly anyway, its become a little less 'formal' over the years) and its shoulder-to-shoulder booze from around the world and samples of food. This years theme was California wine. Past years have include Portugal, Italy, France......
We tend to go in a group and split up, men go one way and the women go another. The men tend to go off sampling beers, scotch and whiskey. The women tend to go off sampling wine, liquers, and food. Occassionally we meet up in the crowded place some where, share hints on the better exhibits, great a bit of fresh air (smoke breaks for some) and then go our separate ways until the hall closes and boots us all out onto the streets of downtown Ottawa. It's then off to a bar (the Wine and Food is done at 9:00 pm) down town to see if we can consume any more booze and food, then off to some ones home or hotel to end the evening. Normally we're at the convention early in the day (this year we were inside just after noon), so by the end of the evening none of us are feeling any pain. It is one of my favourite days of the year, and we all have a blast.

What's the matter, James? No glib remark? No pithy comeback?"

Greetings, all. I don't get over here very often any more, though I do look in on the RR now and then. My life is going on much the same as usual, managing my websites, hanging out in various online communities, and looking after my cats. Recently the latter task has been expanded to include the newest members of the family, a litter of eight born to a very pregnant stray I took in. Never a dull moment.

Lovely dream!

In Reply To
I had a dream with hundreds of large white eggs (almost more than a handful) in nests under trees and on the ground. Though most appeared to be fresh and edible, one hatched when I picked it up.

Thoughts?

How wonderful! How do you feel about eggs? I have a friend who gets violently ill from them, but for me they have positive connotations. If this were my dream, I'd see all of these eggs, laid out within easy reach, as emblems of future hope. When one hatches right in my hand, I could see that as a sight that the good times are already starting to roll! If I had waking-life worries about the future, this would greatly reassure me. If I desired children, such a dream might assure me of the fertile possibilities and that now would be the right time. If I did not desire children, this dream might caution me to take precautions. The fact that I interpret most of the eggs as fresh and edible might also mean nourishment, security, seeing everything taken care of.

A most auspicious dream, in my opinion! Unless, of course, eggs mean something different for you.

Life is beautiful and dangerous! Beware! Enjoy!

No really, I am watching you. All of you. Creepy, eh? A little like a certain little evil overlord, huh? I've written a little desktop widget that alerts me whenever a new thread is posted on Torn (or whenever Guillermo posts, or new posts occur in interesting threads, for that matter).

Happy Aloha Friday

I found out through the grape vine about this Shindig today. I have been out of the loop here since the Summer. First the Olympics got my attention, then the Democratic Convention.. After that, I have been volunteering for the Obama Campaign nearly 7 days a week.

It was Hawaii's job to call Nevada. After thousands of calls day after day by lots of volunteers — though in the early days I was often the only one there — the solidly red state of Nevada went blue on election night!

I was at the official DNC Party in Honolulu at the Pearl Ultra Lounge at Ala Moan Center. I was so stunned when I first heard the announcement... it was crowded and loud and I couldn't believe what I heard... I didn't trust it... it was too early in the night... the last two elections were too painfully lost... then it sunk in... I exploded with excitement, screaming, crying, hugging, crying, screaming. crying.

When Nevada went blue, there was almost as much excitement in the room, half of which was filled with those of us volunteers making those endless calls. I left exhausted around 8pm before they announced the Hawaii results.

I did manage to squeeze in time here and there with my Tolkien group. two birthday parties. Bilbo & Frodo's birthday... and of course Halloween. We dress up in costume and walk the length of Waikiki. This has become an annual city tradition. All the tourists take pictures. We did a Harry Potter theme this year. About a dozen or so of us… I was Luna Lovegood, lion hat and all. We're in photo albums around the world cuz we have been doing this a while. Sometimes we do Lord of the Rings theme... of mixed HP / LotR. We have a member who is really good with costumes. Our robes are all superbly done. We look good!

I have not spent time with my Grand daughter for weeks and I am over due.

Anyway… I am glad I heard about this party. I have never been to a Fiesta that didn't close.

I may come back with some picts!

HAPPY ALOHA FRIDAY TO EVERYONE!

Looks yummy! *grabs another bottle and a glass*

is the FM? This cold weather can't be helping much. I suppose you've tried homeopathy and Chinese Herbal Medicine?

How kind of you to ask! My pain-levels have actually come down close to baseline, so I'm feeling almost coltish! Here in the desert we're supposed to hit the low 80's today, temperature-wise (farenheit.) As for remedies, the best herbals I've found for me are ginger and chia seed.

Life is beautiful and dangerous! Beware! Enjoy!

One good thing

about my current locale is a Doctor schooled in China... he diagnoses you by feeling your pulse and then sells you the herbal preparations that will help with his diagnosis. He is the kind of doctor that believes as long as you are healthy, you pay. If you get sick the treatment is free (as long as you've been following his prescribed regimen). This way the incentive is on him to keep you healthy rather than profiting from your illness.

That's awesome that you live in the desert. Somewhere near Sedona I bet!

Well, since you're throwing such a fine gathering

in such a respectable establishment....
with such amiable company...
and refreshing potables...
and especially since I received such a nice invitation (thanks gramma)

I guess it would be rude if I didn't sidle up to the bar for a minute to say hello to friends old and new. Howdy Altaira--lovely to see you--I'll have a magratita please! (rats, in the time it took me to get this written, you've left. ;o) I'll just have to salt the rim myself then.

I've become a sporadic lurker, rarely if not never, poster --I wish I could be more involved but that's what new parenthood does to a person. In fact, little lumpkin (baby lumpkin no longer) is filling up the corners after second breakfast right now.

Now, if somebody would just start throwing pies, that would push the nostalgia to an extreme.

Cheers friends--and thanks for the excuse to drop by again!

Oh, and because gramma requested it....here's the wee lad...

Hmmm I may as well go all out and have whipped cream and marshmallows with that!

I'm home alone this Friday night and a little bored. Was going to do some drawing but I've injured my wrist and can't hold my pencil. Frown

Oh well, it's an excuse to be lazy I guess!

Am kitten-sitting Millie, my brother's kit tomorrow, which should be fun! Happy weekend all!

It's a long drive from your part of the world (I'm in the Dallas area), but I've still got two girls and a boy who need homes. (I'm keeping two, one was adopted today, and two others are being picked up tomorrow.)

I hate letting them go, but I've got such a large household already that I just couldn't take on another eight.

Was back to work hours ago, finished work, had a doctor's appointment, drove kids home from school, made and ate dinner, and ran a girl scout meeting today after Fiesta Friday. Now I'm about ready to collapse!

How 'ya been doing?

"That is one thing that Men call 'hope.' Amdir we call it, 'looking up.' But there is another which is founded deeper. Estel we call it, that is 'trust.' It is not defeated by the ways of the world, for it does not come from experience, but from our nature and First Being. If we are indeed the Eruhin, the Children of the One, then He will not suffer Himself to be deprived of His own, not by any enemy, not even by ourselves. Those are always fun - and you can see how much enjoyment it gives the students who are involved!

I miss doing things like that with my youngest, now that she's away at college...

Enjoy the rally! The nice gay couple who live in our downtown area and who have done so much for our community for many years were finally able to get married this week, and they've been showered with well-wishes.

Hope the birthday singing went well

Do you let the byrding pick the birthday dinner? That's how we always do it at our house. When I was a kid, I'd ask for chinese food, since none of my sibs liked it, and we didn't have it very often.

The footer speaks of hope, which to me is the most personally powerful theme Tolkien wrote. I am too often a pessimist by nature, and to hold on to hope is sometimes difficult. Tolkien's story of hope unquenchable, and endurance without hope, has been my personal touchstone many times in my life.

Your footer, on the other hand, is a glorious celebration.

I am honored to be here among such excellent and admirable folks.

This community has helped me through some hard and lonely times. I appreciate you all very much. I have been sipping drinks all the way down the board so will grab a cup of tea and see who else shows up.

Cheers all.

How many cats/kittens do you have at present? Last I knew, there were enough to completely cover a bed!

Happy birthday to the Mickster!

12 years old already? Wasn't he just 10? I can't keep up.

My niece's 25th birthday was Monday - we are celebrating big-time tomorrow, the more so since we won't get to be with her on her birthday until she turns 28 (chokes back a sob) - she's off to Morocco soon for her Peace Corps stint.

Welcome back, lumpkin!

And also: Awwwwww! Thanks for the picture of the little guy. He's so cute we'll have to forgive him for keeping you so busy you've no time for us. :-) Say hello to Mr. Lumpkin too, won't you?

"Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them.
Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you."

The joys of living 'up north'!

Maybe the cold rain will keep a few indoors, eh? Or, you could just use the opportunity to curl up with a really good book or a favorite movie. I think you have some of those!

Be safe!

Thanks gramma!

Anyway, since we're sharing... this is a long weekend for me! I don't return to school until Tuesday, as we November 20th is the anniversary of the 1910 Mexican Revolution. Because of some weird recent legislation, the free day is changed to Monday.

Anyway, chez moi, tradition says we put up Christmas decoration on November 20 (no Thanksgiving in Mexico) so I believe we are putting everything up tomorrow. That means Christmas Tree, a whole bunch of plush toys in the living room, Christmas carrols CD's, which include performers such as Mickey Mouse and Friends, The Looney Toons (Tunes?), The Muppets with John Denver, Air Supply, and Plácido Domingo. It's also the first day we drink hot fruit punch. Overall, a great day...

You know what they say... It's the most wonderful time of the year. Wink

I've not seen the inside

But I've seen the outside. It's about that decrepit.

I have been following the filming of the new Clint Eastwood movie Gran Torino, also done here in Detroit. The organist from my church plays for the funeral scene.

Sean Astin also was here filming a couple of weeks ago, in something about labor unrest among a secretarial pool. I've forgotten the name of that one.

Michigan has lots of tax incentives for film companies lately, and has attracted a lot of business.

Let me see...

Nice person, big heart, nice garden, nice pictures etc etc.
Yup i know ye [HUG].
There is a big blow here with a cold front moving in. It has been balmy for a couple of days, although cloudy.

I hope you are very well , with warm toes too my dear:)

Tolkien and C.S. Lewis- The Gift of Friendship -Duriez

When it comes right down to it. When one is confronted with the essence of what defines the finest of humanity, that separates it from all other life and used as a bulwark against evil, what else is there besides Love? How can true matters of the heart be annulled by regulation?

Love you auntie. You just keep on a comin'. Those who know they are right, do.

Thanks for the pictures. Fine hat you are sporting:).

May the grace of Manwë let us soar with eagle's wings!

In the air, among the clouds in the sky
Here is where the birds of Manwe fly
Looking at the land, and the water that flows
The true beauty of earth shows
With the stars of Varda lighting my way
In all the realms this is where I stay
In the realm of Manwë Súlimo

Better late than never!

Nice of you to pop in, GH -- I don't think I've seen you in a month of Sundays. Has it really been six years since we had our adventures in Edinburgh? Time sure flies. Hope all is well, and happy what's-left-of-the-weekend!

Foe-HOG!

Happiest of happy anniversaries to you and the Mrs.! Nice to see you drop in and know you're still out there somewhere. Somehow just seeing your nick makes me think of anagrams and bad puns. :-) Hope you're having a nice weekend!

I'll see both of your cute babies...

and raise you double! After I give them both a big "Awww, what a cutie", that is. :-) I also bet my two can raise more hell than both of yours added together. I do wish Eldarion would take a bit more after his dad.

Well howdy, stranger!

So nice to see you here, CC! I trust the little Cheshire Kittens (who aren't really so little anymore, are they?) are doing well? And you and the Mr. too? Happy what's-left-of-the-weekend!

If I had a pie

I have to admit I'd probably eat it, not throw it... I'm too hobbity at heart. Which makes me think: what would a hobbit do -- throw a pie, or eat it?

Great to see you delurk, lumpkin. Your little one is darling (he's grown so much!), and I think (in this picture at least) he looks like Mr. lumpkin. I trust Mr. lumpkin doesn't sing The Poopy Song (to the tune of "This Land is Your Land": "This poopy's your poopy, it's not my poopy, from California, to the poopy islands", etc.) when changing diapers? I would have to have a husband who enjoys parodies. I hope all's well with all three of you! When are you going to introduce that little one to the joys of visiting New Zealand? :-)

Six years - argh!

That was the first time I'd ever met any online contacts, and I was all nervous and squeeful - and it was the least sleep I'd had in any weekend since my daughter was born, I think! Seems a long time ago now.
Hope you're all doing okay!

Later than normal

Although it looks like there are one or two folks who haven't gone home yet. Wink This may be my last Fiesta for a while, as I will be leaving for the UK next week. Unless I can find a computer to use while i'm there, in which case i'll try to pop in and say hello.

I hope everyone had a good weekend!
