Frodo holds off Batman at NZ box office

Frodo holds off Batman at NZ box office
The Dominion Post | Tuesday, 29 July 2008

Despite a challenge from The Dark Knight, Peter Jackson's The Return of the King is still king at the New Zealand box office.
The latest Batman film, which broke box office records for an opening weekend in the United States, made $1.8 million in New Zealand, $800,000 short of the $2.6 million record accomplished by The Return of the King in 2003.
However, The Dark Knight had the biggest opening weekend for a film so far this year, beating Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull ($1.6 million), I Am Legend and Iron Man (both $1.3 million).

Nice to see that the little Hobbit still has staying power. :)

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauronís master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Go Frodo!

Where did Pirates 2 fall in this competition? It made the most of the 3 Pirates movies.

Hanging out with the Lonely Isle elves.

No idea.

I posted the entire story that appeared online - but if I see anything more, I'll add it.

It's interesting...

How the world box office behaves so differently from the American one.

Of course the grosses per country are very small compared to those in the states (anyone outside the US dreaming of a USD$300 million movie?)

But movies like each of the Rings and the Potter ones (and fantasy in general) have shown that the world and the US like different things. The other side of the story, where movies are more pupular in the US than in the world is shown with your average Star Wars or any super hero movie you can name.

In this article, Variety explores the possibility of the sequel to The Golden Compass being filmed justified just by international box office, and setting aside its American failure. That would be a first in the industry.

Here's to Del Toro becoming the Irvin Kershner of Middle Earth!

Well,

I'm guessing that would be true for most (if not all) countries, that their own box office doesn't neatly match the world figures. The world box office could be considered a smoothing-out of the total countries' results, which would take the edge off the peaks and troughs in each market.

Good to see RotK holding it's own...

But, i gotta say, The Dark knight is the best new release i've seen in a long while.

I didn't like the original Batman movies, so i didn't see batman returns on the big screen. But i'd heard good things about it from others, so when i saw it on offer (£3..) on dvd i gave it a go and was pleasantly surprised.
I was on the strength of this that i saw D.K.
I liked the fact that the ending was emotionally ambiguous. Neither a happy or sad ending.
I wasn't your typical, obvious, Hollywood style blockbuster....and i like that.
Plus Christian Bale is a fantastic actor (compare this role to The Machinist...)
Also, a special mention goes to Heath Ledger as the joker. Brilliantly done !
And just another half of a film to see him in...

That's unbelievable!

After nearly fours years it's still number one!! I guess there's nothing better than watching on the big screen! I was so overwhelmed the first time I saw it at the cinema.

Brian Blessed for Thorin!

Threads about box office are boring.

Really, who cares about all those numbers?
