Happy Friday!

Thank goodness we finally reached Friday! This week has draaagged on endlessly. And to top it off we had some pretty bad storms roll through last night. Fortunately we were spared the worst of it. And it looks like the weather will be clear for us to hit the lake this weekend!

I'll just have some coffee today, barkeep. Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Gramma! Feet off the bar!

At least until we've had enough 'refreshment' to join ya!

It's cold and rainy here today, maybe some hot chocolate would go down well and *whispers* spike it a little, will you, so I can get through this very busy morning?

Here's to the newbies, here's to the vets of D-Day, and here's to the weekend!

Well, I am in need of something bracing today!

Our world came to pieces on Monday. OhioHobbit was downsized. His company is closing one plant and laid off close to 20 from his plant. It is associated with the housing industry (enough said).

So, we sit here being LATE middle-aged and wondering what lies in store for us. Too old to be marketable and too young for Social Security!

He has to start looking for a job again after 20 years. June 18 would have been his 20th anniversary!

And then if someone could turn down the temprature? I'm waiting for the next cold-front while glaring angrily at everyone who says "But we can't really complain about it being too warm". Of course we can! I don't live here because I like it warm and sunny, then I would move further south. *grumble*

A glass of Bilbo's finest in honor of my Dad please...

As you and a select few are aware, my wonderful dear sweet Dad passed just a few short weeks ago. I was hesitant about ' putting it out there ' ; as Legolas said " For me, the grief is still too near. "

However, I missed last Friday's toast from Altaira and you are the warmest, kindest people I have ever had the pleasure to associate with, however virtually. I've been told here at work that I should be " getting over it " by now , so in complete and utter defiance to them, I raise my glass and say:

" I love you Dad, thank you for your gift of love and humor. You were and still are a treasure to me . The ships have come and carried you home, but where my heart lies, there my treasure lies also. "

* borrowed and mixed shamelessly from Into the West and Deathly Hallows*

There's something of everything here, The Shire and the Golden Wood and Gondor and kings' houses and inns and meadows and mountains all mixed.

....and there are Elves when you want them.

Hau‘oli la Hanau to me. . . (singing)

 Hau‘oli la Hanau to me . . . Hau‘oli la Hanau to me . . . Hau‘oli la Hanau to me . . .

Today is my birthday!

A beautiful sunrise this morning, Tropical birds are singing, Flower trees are starting to boom (late this year)... It is a glorious, beautiful Hawaiian Day! Bless the powers that be... Gratitude... a fine feeling to feel when mixed with joy!

I wanted to get the drawing I am working on in time to post today for my Birthday Mathom thing... not not quite there yet. I have about a third of it left to do. I may not get finished for a couple of days. So, my Birthday Mathom thing will be lat this year.

But, I still have Fiesta . . . Party . . . Party! Yeah for Fiesta.

I have a full day fun, fun fun planned. Breakfast, a little time at the beach, home to change... go out to a fancy lunch with a friend... the across teh street to the movies. What time we finish lunch will determine which movie we see. On the list: Prince Caspian (2nd time), Sex and the City, Kung fu Panda, and Iron Man.

Prince Caspian: I have seen it, I want to see it again, but I am leaning toward wanting to see something else. But it's a good "Birthday" film to see. But its at one screen today, so if we get out of lunch late, we will see something else.

Iron Man: The one I want to see most, but my frined has not interest in it... So, Double feature... I may stick around to see 5:30 showing. (if not too tired that is!)

Sex and the City: this would be just fine . . . it sounds light & a lot of fun

Kung fu Panda: not keen on animated films, usually skip them. But the Reviews on "At the Movies" were fantastic. . . like this is the animated movie of the year to see. Still, low on the Birthday movie list.

So, That's my plan, I like to fill my birthday up with all my favorite things to do.

Have a great fantastical wonderous day and weekend.

Aloha to you all...

A wee dram, please, gramma!

The Texas Scottish Festival starts tonight! Men in kilts! Music! Tartan! Flags! Friends!

And did I mention men in kilts?

This is the Gaffer's and my favorite weekend of the year. A shame it's so hot here, but it's Texas, and it's June -- what can you do? (Other than sweat, that is.)

Under the heading of "friends", I'm looking forward to visiting with Morrowdim. Last year she and I actually chatted for a moment, but without knowing each other's secret TORn identities. Small world, etc.

A wee dram of single malt, please, to evoke the peat smoke and sea spray of Scotland. And a bottle of ice-cold Gatorade to reflect the reality of a Texas summer.

Y'all have a great weekend!

WooHoo - It's Friday!

It's been a looonnnggg week here. We're not overly busy at work, so the days are going by very slowly. Not that I'm complaining, mind!

Love that Van Morrison song, gramma. I'm *so* in the mood for summer! I'm a member of the central park association in our little town, and we're gearing up for our annual bash two weeks away. It's a lot of fun - we have a roping competition Friday night, a parade Saturday followed by a ranch rodeo, barbeque and dance, then gymkhana on Sunday. Since it's completely volunteer-staffed we're all totally exhausted by the end of the weekend. But everyone has a great time, especially the kids, so it's worth the effort.

I'll take an ice-cold 1420 in the spirit of the season, gramma - Cheers!

Cool

Don't let anyone tell you

how much or how long you should grieve. It's a very personal thing. Yes, the time will come when you don't think about him every day, but every day you do think of him you will still miss him. My father's been gone 20 years now, and I still miss him.

To the newbies! *Raises glass of iced tea*

We're off to the mountains again in a few hours; I have Fridays off in the summer and we go hiking pretty much every weekend, but Uncle Baggins works nights so he's sleeping now. Fortunately we can get away with leaving town in the afternoon and still getting in a good hike, this close to summer solstice.

It's going to be a busy weekend because I'm manning two different booths at Pride in the Park on Saturday (PFLAG and the Unitarians) and there's an interfaith church service for Pride in the Park on Sunday. (They have the local festival a couple of weeks before the national ones because a lot of people like to go down to Denver for their PrideFest two weeks later; my daughter and I are planning to go for the first time this year.) One of my goals Saturday is to buy some more wool socks from two women who met and fell in love in my calculus class seventeen years ago. They have an alpaca farm and they always have a booth at Pride in the Park; selling wool goods in June is tough, but there was fresh snow in the mountains yesterday.

Anyway, then on Sunday afternoon our family is getting together for "June birthdays" of which we have four this week, two on Sunday. We'll probably do our usual and have a cake with the total number of years represented in binary with the candles; blue for "ones" and pink for "zeros".

My Grandma

The doctor has confirmed that my grandmother's tumor is indeed malignant and terminal. I will go to her when she has her ameliorative surgery, which is not yet scheduled.

She is 92 years old, has outlived her husband and her only son, is mostly blind, mostly deaf, lost most of her sense of taste and smell, and she finds her physical weakness supremely frustrating, when she had been abnormally strong for most of her life, up until her mid 80's (she used to be the go-to person for heavy lifting at her factory, because the men had all injured their backs.) I do not begrudge her the right to move on to something better; I believe that the discomforts of our final years are tantamount to a mother bird removing the down from a nest when it's time for the baby bird to fly. But I will miss our conversations, for she is intelligent, perceptive, lyrical, and appreciates the quirky side of life.

The plus side is that I can eulogize her while she yet lives. People often don't know what to say to the terminally ill. It seems to me that the best thing you can say is "Thank you for all that you have given me over the years!" Let the person know that her life meant something, she accomplished something, she can let her life close without regrets.

So here's a toast to a grand, brave lady, who gave me language! Really. I had stopped talking before she got custody of me, and she started me up again, introduced me to the whole amazing world of words! For my bedtime stories she read to me from books of classical poetry, Browning and Byron, Shelley and Keats, Tennyson and Frost, all of those marvelous storytellers in verse. She would come home exhausted from the factory night-shift, her fingers almost blue with cold, but we would wake up just to hear her story-tell us back to sleep again; she never said, "Oh, go back to bed, I want to get some sleep!" She taught me to read, and when the school system would have stifled my imagination, she fought them, and taught me to write. When she saw that I had a passion for it, she insisted that I write every day, and would not let anyone interfere with my writing time.

She had no idea what Tolkien's writings were about, but merely upon hearing about them, she followed her instinct and asked Grandpa to find his books for me anyway (Only "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" were available in those days.) Grandpa eventually had to special-order them through a liquor store that had a book rack, of all things! They were my first New books; before then everything I had came from a used bookstore near the beach, where she and Grandpa would take us frequently for the latest load, ten cents a copy, five if the book was badly damaged, one free for every two we traded in. Every weekend she and Grandpa would take us to either the library, the museums, or someplace in nature (the mountains, the beach, the desert, the chaparrel country.) We may have been poor, but she saw to our education as scrupulously as Bilbo educated Sam.

Some people here have said that they like the way that I write. You can blame Grandma for that.

no one has a right to say "get over it". Get over loving someone who is a huge part of your life? That love will last the rest of your life and beyond. Good on you for your defiance, and I'll raise a glass with you. To your wonderful Dad! *raises glass*

Blessing for you

If it is permitted to pray for you, then I offer my prayer. If it is not permitted, then I offer my best wishes. And the nature of this wish/prayer/blessing is this:

May the changes in your world take a wonderful turn that you could not have foreseen, a eucatastrophe. May the ending of this job free OhioHobbit for something better than he had ever imagined. May you look back, this time next year, at how far you had come, and bless the seeming misfortune that you now endure. And until this unseen opportunity reveals itself, may you both have everything you need.

wow- that's a hit!

You're probably still reeling from this, but I have no doubt there's an opportunity lurking in there somewhere -- my husband would never have seriously considered baking professionally had he not been forcibly bumped off the benefit-laden financial career path he had been on. It's been a roller coaster but much good has come of this, even if the dollars aren't "quite" there yet.

I've been self-employed for 20 years -- and middle-aged folks are very marketable in that category -- as you have experience, etc. For the past five years or so, I've done this kind of with my husband and it's been good for clients and us as a couple.

From what I can tell, you two work well together, and I think the technical discussions you led say to me that there's a thread there for you to follow, in terms of work, if you want to consider that - I'd be glad to be a sounding board if you want to talk about getting started in independent contracting work, so PM me if that would help you!

Addition (too late to edit post)

We got a call yesterday that the wife of one of my husband's railroad buddies has died at the age of about sixty. They were both incredible hikers and rock climbers and skiers and mountain bikers. She had MG, I think, or some such degenerative disease. I saw her two months ago and she looked pretty good, but was lamenting not being able to hike, so I suppose the quick progress of the disease was a blessing for her. I didn't know her very well, but it's still kind of a shock. And a reminder to live life as fully as possible while we can. So I'll dedicate this afternoon's hike to her memory.

And I'll include a photo from last week's hike.

Well-toasted!

Here's to a fine gentleman!

And don't let anyone pressure you--mourning can take anywhere from one to three years. To say you should be over it in a matter of weeks is ridiculous. You will have many happy moments intermixed with the grief, of course--by no means do I say that you'll be miserable the whole time! I'm just saying that you have every right to take your time in sorting it all out, adjusting to the fact that your father is not on the same plane of existence anymore.

Shuya and I will both be celebrating b-days this Sunday (20-something and 30-something, respectively), and what better way to kick things off than with a drink surrounded by TORn-sibs! I would love a nice cold Strongbow, gramma - the temps here are going to be in the mid-90's all weekend, with no relief in sight. I'm sure shuya would love something cold to drink as well, so i'll order for her, too. Wink

What a wonderful tribute!

It is wonderful to be able to eulogize someone while they still live. That happened, with one of my heroes, Jim Graham, who led folk dancing in our community for years. We had a 30th anniversary party for the folk dance group and people had many tributes for him. He was pretty feeble at that time with a brain tumor, and it was definitely a kind of memorial gathering, but we were glad he got to be there. And it also happened with the young woman Anne at our church when she announced that her illness was terminal. There was a reception for her that was like a memorial reception, but she got to be there.

I love your memories of your grandmother encouraging your writing. What a wonderful mentor. My sister and I think of our grandfather that way. He died before we were born, but his letters show a love of writing that we've always found inspirational.

*raises a glass* to your Grandma!

Summertime!

Got some hot cappucino there, gramma? It's a cold blustery rainy day here! But it's supposed to hit the 90's this weekend - gotta get the sunscreen ready.

Just popping by for a moment, it's a crazy day with end-of-year book returns going on at this library. Crazy There have been 8th-graders helping out, and at times it's been like Bilbo's kitchen with the Dwarves in charge, scooting with armloads all over the place - I love it, I keep thinking "carefully, carefully with the plates"! Laugh

And, yes - a toast to all our Newbies, may the hair on their toes never fall out! Smile

A tall, cold iced tea please!

No particular plans this weekend. I'm going to dinner with some ladies from the office tonight. Sort of a networking, get-to-know-you kind of thing. I'm looking forward to it.

Otherwise, I'm hoping to have a relaxing weekend And hoping the neighbor's *&^%$# carpool doesn't honk right under my window a 6:30 a.m. tomorrow, like they did today. Honestly...

Sad News. :(

With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world at the moment, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important person, which almost went unnoticed.

Larry LaPrise, the man who wrote "The Hokey Pokey" died peacefully at the age of 83. The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin. They put his left leg in. And then the trouble started.

What was your Dad's favorite drink? A tall glass of that to you, and to all, in memory of a fine man who earned his daughter's love and respect.

Your Dad sounds like he was quite a guy -- I'd love to hear a story about him if you'd like to tell one. Let us know more about him and about that sense of humor of his, and the ways he showed you he loved you. What was he like?

Today I celebrate a different geekiness

D&D 4th edition is released today! After work, I'll be going to our local gaming store, where they're holding a 24 hour gaming event. It statred at 10am today and will go all night untill 10am tomorrow. My fiancι is there already, and we will stay for the whole thing, then at 10 tomorrow the official D&D Game Day starts, with geeks everywhere playing the first 4e published adventure. We'll also be there for that... so on that note I'll have a virtual Mountain Dew or a Red Bull Gramma (I don't like either IRL, but I'll need the energy somehow Crazy)

Oh and on Sunday we'll still play our regular 3e game. Cool

"The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair."

Cheers to your 'wonderful dear sweet Dad'

Defy awya. They are totally inaropriate to suggest that whether overtly or covertly, suggestively, behaviourly or elswise.

Grief is grief. It takes as long as it takes, it goes though its own process and stages in its time.... that is in our time. People who try to stop other people from feeling their feelings, whether grief or anythign else, do so to stop the flood of their own repressed feelings... its about them and their history. Their are wonderful books and groups out there for grief support.

So, honor our self and you dad and your life together and the life he still has in you heart and will always have.

Fun, fun, fun...

I'm very sorry to hear that OhioHobbit's been laid off from his job. That just bites! Here's hoping that it will be a temporary state of affairs.

Freelancing and contracting can be viable options if you've got the skills. Let me know if you'd like me to take a look at resumes/cover letters/etc. (Been laid off a few times myself -- once with extreme prejudice, once with extreme indifference, and a couple of times with extreme reluctance.)

that puts me in mind of a festival we went to years ago. It was a French Voyager festival -- you know the French who went out into the wilderness in the 18th century. I'm graduating in a week!

Today is a bittersweet day; this day and Monday are my last days of classes in high school. I'll miss it... a little. Not really :P I'll miss some of my friends, though. Some I'll likely never see again after graduation, which is a bit scary, and relieving. Some I really do not want to see again.

A student is also dead... again. The second one in less than 2 months. Rumour is that it was an intentional death, though I don't know myself. All I know is is that I am really grieving for his family and friends. Life is simply not fair.

This weekend is a three-way 18th birthday party, and my last weekend as a high schooler. My goodness... I can't wait.

"Getting over"? Over what - over a lifetime of love, over a part of one's life and a piece of one's heart?

Those we love remain with us: we remember them whenever we do certain things, or say certain words, or see or hear or smell or taste or feel something that we know they were fond of.

There is no "getting over". So here's to your Dad, and to my Mom also, our treasures, may they always be with us!

Self-employment

One of the nice things about self-employment is that he might well stay home with you all or part of the time. I remember when my husband was a freelance journalist, he loved it! I remember laughing with him about what a cool job this was after he had just finished interviewing an astronaut over the phone, while sitting comfortably at home in his underwear.

My website http://www.dreamdeer.grailmedia.com offers fanfic, and message-boards regarding intentional community or faerie exploration.

Joys of Fall

In Reply To
Early June must be a popular time for birthdays. My son is June 4.

Which makes early October a popular time for something else altogether. Ah, they give Spring all the credit for romance, but there's something to be said for the smoky, fiery-hued delights of autumn! Not too hot, not too cold, not to pollin-y, and the bugs that woke up in spring all slip back into dormancy again.

My website http://www.dreamdeer.grailmedia.com offers fanfic, and message-boards regarding intentional community or faerie exploration.

What a lovely toast!

Hugs to you, and don't listen to your coworkers: everyone heals in their own way and in their own time. Your relationship with your dad took your lifetime to build; why should you have to "get over it" in a few weeks -- or, really, ever? Harumph on your coworkers. Treasure the memories and the love he gave you, and hang in there.

That's a wonderful tribute

to your grandmother -- she sounds like an amazing lady. I wish more children could grow up with that kind of mind-expanding love and attention. I'm so glad you have the chance to tell her how important she is to you and to say your goodbyes. I lost my own grandmother last year; she was sharp and lucid right to the end, but her body had just given up and she'd finally had enough. I was unable to visit her in the final months, nor was I able to attend her funeral, and this will be something I always regret. So give your grandmother some extra love now, and make some peaceful, comforting memories.

It must feel like

there's a door open in front of you, and you know you must go through and close the door behind you, while never knowing where this door is leading you to. What is "old" and familiar is being swept away in the currents of Time. Yes, it's a bit scary - that's quite normal, and yes, all us older TORnfolk have gone through that, many times! You'll do well. Smile

I'm sorry to hear about the second student...that's such a heavy and horrible grief for his/her family to have to deal with! You're right, life is not fair; but what is important in life, is how we deal with whatever is thrown at us; to borrow from Joni Mitchell, it can be stepping stones, or sinking sand. I know that you and your friends will do what you can to help that family cope with this.

On a brighter note: I hope all your APs went well!

Yum! :-)

Brings to mind the ballad of the drunken scotsman:

Well a scotsman clad in kilt left the bar one evening fair.
And could tell by how he walked that he'd drunk more than his share.
He fumbled 'round until he could no longer keep his feet
and he stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street

Chorus: Ring ding didde diddle i-de-oh, ring di diddley i-oh
He stumbled off into the grass to sleep beside the street.

About that time two young and lovely girls just happened by
And one says to the other with a twinkle in her eye
"See young sleeping Scotsman so strong and handsome built
I wonder if its true what they dont wear beneath the kilt!"

Chorus: Ring ding diddle diddle i-de-oh, ring di diddley i-oh
I wonder if its true what they dont wear beneath the kilt!

They crept up on that sleeping Scotsman quiet as could be
Lifted up his kilt about an inch so they could see
and there behold for them to view
beneath his Scottish skirt was nothing more then God had graced him with upon his birth!

Chorus: Ring ding diddle diddle i-de-oh, ring di diddley i-oh
Was nothing more than God had graced him with upon his birth

They marveled for a moment, then one said we must gone
Lets leave a present for our friend before we move along!
As a gift they left a blue silk ribbon tied into a bow
Around the bunny star, the Scots kilt did lift them show

Chorus: Ring ding diddle diddle i-de-oh, ring di diddley i-oh
Around the bunny star, the Scots kilt did lift them show

Now the Scotsman woke to nature's call and stumbled towards a tree
Behind the bush he lifts his kilt and gawks at what he sees!
And in a startled voice he says to whats before his eyes
"(grunt) Lad i donno where ya been but I see ya won first prize!"

Chorus: Ring ding diddle diddle i-de-oh, ring di diddlye i-oh
Ah lad i dunno where ya been but I see ya won first priz!

Exiting the last movie (Narnia) at 10pm with my 2 friends, I had a broad smile on my face and a delighted, satified feeling in my heart.

"WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN"

Did you ever wish certain moments from LOTR could've made it to the screen? Have you ever imagined what would have happened if all of the original writings from the script actually made it to the films? Well, "What Could Have Been" is the right discussion for you! Starting this summer will be a series of topics about what could have been in "The Lord of the Rings Trilogy". Be on the lookout, and be sure to join in on the fun!

Correction: I will probablybe here for another week, actually. Grandma wants me to come after she comes out of the hospital, when she will need me the most.

Hello!

Thought I'd stop by quickly, even though I'm late! It's been a hectic week, my uncle had a stroke and Neil's brother was rushed into hospital, so aside from being at work, this week has been spent in various hospital wards worrying and fretting! Am glad the week's over! They are both still in there, my uncle will probably be there for a long while, so it's nice to have some time to catch up on some rest before Monday comes and the whole work/hospital routine starts again! Hope you are all enjoying your weekends!

For the love of Eru, make it stop!

I've been trying very hard not to be really rude, so I saved 'em up for this thread.
Been a stressful week or so elsewhere, and clearly I haven't much patience left for here...
I'm not feelin' chatty, but I've been feelin' rather gluggish lately. ;)

*jumps into ice bucket*

Day late and a dollar short as always.
I work late Fridays and then... *sigh*
Something with ice. Any frozen lemonade stuff around?
hmmhmmhmm
I'll go rummaging.
Still packing. Getting out of the city for good next Saturday and couldn't be happier.
The heat wave has hit the Northeast of the US. It's soooo hot in here!!
Packed the stupid fans somewhere....
Back to it and hopefully i'll find the fans while adding to the pile!
Happy hugs and supportive smiles to all.
*dumps ice water over head, blends ice and lemonade in blender*
Here's some money for the jukebox.
I need music to pack by!!

Oh Jazmine, I'm sorry

How scary! I hope they both recover soon. You take care of yourself, though. The stress and worry will drain you, and you'll need all your strength.

Here... relax for a bit. Take care.

Christmas Carols

Just for you, I've opened up the jukebox and packed in all of those songs normally reserved for the Christmas season, so that you can picture Dashing Through the Snow while you swelter amid the boxes. They do say that people can actually lower their body temperature by visualizing cool things.
