I've taken this image from the wiki site on Sauron and it's a water colour by Tolkien, showing Sauron's last physical manifestation, moments after the destruction of the One Ring and moments before he's dispersed by the wind. I think at least for the cinematic side of things, Morgoth's crown is like his own version of Sauron's Ring. Not the same, but still something of great evil that belonged to the former Dark Lord.
