*gets keys, unlocks door* It's Friday! Time for Fiesta! Can't Post

Greetings, all and sundry! Our esteemed barmistress, Altaira, is off on an Adventure, so I shall be your hostess today.

I awoke to a frosty 25F/-4C outside today - so the buffet is laden with soups of all sorts, and breads and pickles and other condiment to accompany them. There's even a nice, cold gazpacho for those who are approaching the summer season - only three weeks 'til the solstice!

So come in, order your favorite drink, and tell us what you've been up to - or are planning for the weekend!

*puts quarters on juke box* Is anyone daring enough to play us some seasonal music?

Hello hello! [In reply to] Can't Post

Oof, getting chilly there! It's only 51 here currently, which for us is quite cold in daytime.

I may grab some soup to go and a baguette! With some hot chocolate to follow it. Angelic

Well, we're fully out of our old apartments - woo! Every last bit of stuff/junk is here, somewhere, and hopefully we can channel Marie Kondo and ditch some things that aren't actually worth anything to us and clear some space. Our new sofa arrived intact, looking good, so I'll be putting some mileage on it this weekend due to a chance of rain throughout the weekend.

Wishing everyone a happy weekend!

*warms pan of milk, gets out cocoa, sugar, and a dash of salt* One mug of hot cocoa coming up. Mini-marshmallows with that?

Congrats, it must feel great to be fully moved in and have that space that's all yours now! So the comfy movie room is all set up?

Definitely feeling more like winter now - [In reply to] Can't Post

and about time, too! There are still leaves on some of the trees. No frosts yet here, but he temperature clawed its way up to just about 5C today and the clammy mistiness in the air has done my hair no favours at all. Merry Frizzmas! Our local supermarket is not stocking veggie mini mallows at present; I hope they come back in soon. When I take the boys to spend their book vouchers in our lovely cosy independent book store (with cafe) hot choc and a cake is part of the deal, so we need to supply our own mini mallows. First World problems, eh?! Yesterday I had a festive double whammy; an early Christmas lunch with the knitting group followed by an evening meeting of the Quilting Group - just hot drinks and cakes for that one. I'm hoping to make a start on putting my outside lights up tomorrow, for as long as there's any feeling left in my fingers! Then the knitting group is running a charity stall at a local event; there are bags and boxes of knitted wares all over my place and I'll be glad to see the back of them, to be honest. Hmm, seasonal music? Tap your feet to Steeleye Span's 'Gaudete', folks! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDc2FD-vy8M Have a good weekend, whether it be summer or winter, warm or cold. Cheers!

Merry Frizzmas? [In reply to] Can't Post

You might have to wear a Santa cap over your hair, LOL!

I've not seen the vegetarian minis at our store, either, fortunately they are available online. But it sounds like you've made a great start to the season! May everything sell out at your stall!

Ah, Gaudete, that's a lovely classic. I hadn't known Steeleye Span had a rendition of it, thank you!

I don't wanna get out of bed. [In reply to] Can't Post

'Cause then I'll have to start working in the garden. (I'm hosting Christmas this year and if we get good-enough weather to eat outside, the patio area will need to be a lot clearer than it is now.) It doesn't help that we've had southerly winds over the country for the last few weeks and quite frankly, it's colder than it should be out there. Unsure

I took my bike to the store yesterday to get it serviced (first time on the bike since I caught that awful cold six weeks ago) and while I waited I wandered into a shop to look at small portable speakers. While looking up the reviews for one speaker, I saw that a store a few doors away had it for less than half the price! So that's my win from yesterday. Smile Also, it was nice to be back on the bike again

Tonight is the social club's Christmas party and I'll be wearing a mask for it. I have not gone through the last nearly three years Covid-free only to slip up before Christmas.

How about a breakfast margarita, madam barkeep? That'll get the day started right!

Happy weekend, everyone.

The sky is a strange blue colour. [In reply to] Can't Post

Today it's actually not raining! Goodness knows what the slug battalions will do with themselves. After getting a handful of slug when attempting to pick beans the other day, and their continued depredations, I have no sympathy for the blighters.

Highlights of a quiet week chez Kimi: we harvested our first lot of new potatoes, a load of Jersey Bennes that look luscious. One tub still to be harvested. And we emptied and organised our large upright freezer. For a while now, things have been added to it on the basis of keep opening drawers till a gap is found and shove whatever it is in there. We now have a system, and labels. Only one nameless thing found in the depths needed to be discarded, and as a bonus, we found some fruit harvested from last season's excess that we're now enjoying with breakfast.

Mr Kimi is making a sponge cake, so morning tea is sorted. Now it's time to hang out some washing - so good to know it's actually likely to dry!

We'll be putting up our Christmas tree this weekend, which is always fun, as we rediscover decorations we've acquired over the years and from different places we've visited.

Wishing everyone a pleasant weekend.

Hot chocolate please! [In reply to] Can't Post

with a chunk of home-made marshmallow if you've got it! It got down to 23F (-5C) here last night, and my friends and I were out walking when it was still below freezing. Fortunately not much wind. It's been snowing all around us but for some reason we've been in a little pocket where we've only gotten a few flakes. But more snow is in the forecast!

I finished my big editing job. Today I put up more lights outside and built a climbing pole for my cat - he was trying to get on it before I was even done, so he understood the mission. I think the rest of the day I'll kick back and work on my jigsaw puzzle while watching the first two episodes of "Willow."

I have nothing at all planned for the weekend. But next week I fly to California to attend the doctoral defense of a friend, who asked me to be on her committee (so I have to come up with some good questions!). She was in my cohort and is the last to earn the PhD - and complete the set, as everyone else in the cohort completed theirs, which is unusual. So about half the cohort is also flying in for a big reunion; our last class together was 2011. I've also booked myself up the day before and the day after with visits with friends. Sounds like the weather is cool for SoCal, but it will be nice to be 30 degrees warmer for a few days. . . .

Bed. Good topic! [In reply to] Can't Post

Mmmmmh. Cozy, warm, flu approaching, as does winter (around on 0Celsius). Nope, I choose bed and a book over bar tour. At my age that’s more than appropriate. And it doesn’t necessarily exclude a glass by the bedside

Ooh, a breakfast margarita has orange marmalade in it! Yummy!

That was a serendipitous bike servicing! And it must feel great to be back on it again.

Looks like you have a bit of cleaning-up work ahead of you - in addition to all the other things at this time of year. But enjoy the party tonight, and may you remain bug-free!

Who knows what lurks in the depths of the upright freezer! [In reply to] Can't Post

Amazing that only one nameless thing was creeping around the depths of your ice-cold Moria. That's a job well done, organizing and labeling everything! And the fruit was still good, that's a bonus!

A handful of slug...eeeuw...if only something could get rid of those buggers...

Sponge cake and tea, very nice, enjoy! Smile

I've seen the snow maps for your area, you're getting quite dumped on! But anything that adds to the mountain snowpack is good.

Congrats on getting the editing done, now to keep checking up on its publication!

Has Charlie had a climbing pole before? How tall is it?

What a grand reunion you'll all have next week, time to celebrate this amazing achievement!

~No milk today...~ No, cocoa won't do at the moment (it's Friday night, after all). But with a looming flu I chose a Swedish bitter (don't know if that's known outside northern Europe), that'll put hairs on my feet -- to misquote Highlander. Which will lead to an early night.

After all these decades(!) of absence, I started reading my old posts -- and I should very much like to reply to them (what rubbish I wrote, what thoughts I didn't reply to, and things I'd like to add).

But -- ach! (yes, I'm, German ;-), those days have passed. Ah, those good days (with Balrog-wings and a nice ale on the side...)

Hope the snow lets up soon. I'm sure it's great longer-term for the mountains and drought resistance, but is quite messy nonetheless.

And enjoy your time down here! Not sure which exact pocket of the region you'll be in, but the low's are dropping into the low 40s soon. I suppose that's balmy compared to what you've got at home. Shocked

The temps are playing with us! [In reply to] Can't Post

Brrrrrr, that's cold, dernwyn! We're supposed to have that temp here in Michigan in the morning (Saturday); but the high today was 48 degree F! NOSE DIVE! So I'll grab a hot chocolate and put a bunch of hot water in my thermoses. We've got gale-force winds tonight and into tomorrow (50mph+ gusts)... so I'm prepping for an outage.

I'm pretty stoked since I went to my local Computer Service Store yesterday and ordered a refurbished laptop and a desktop. He's a wizard at anything to do with computers, so... like my mechanic... he's someone I trust completely. I've worked with for the last few years. He save my current desktop when I was told it was about to blank out. I bought it new in 2009!!! He's kept it running for 3 years, and it's still doing great; but it's just a matter of time. I'm getting both HP computers for $880. He'll find what I'm looking for, overhaul them, and get me up and running. So if I disappear for a bit, I'm making the switch.

Thanks for the goodies and taking such great care of us, dernwyn! *waves fondly* Have a great weekend everyone!!

Whups, I almost forgot [In reply to] Can't Post

an ingredient!
Measure out a cup of milk.Whisk together in a small pan about 2 TBL of it with 2 TBL unsweetened cocoa powder (I use dark), 1 to 2 TBL sugar (depending on your taste), dash of salt, over medium-low heat; when dissolved, whisk in the rest of the milk and heat over medium heat until however hot you like it. Remove from heat, stir in 1/4 tsp vanilla, and pour into mug.

And put as many mini mallows on top as you'd like! Laugh

This weekend: Digital Divas at 6:30 tomorrow morning (choir director plus 8 of us crazy enough to play multi-instrument keyboard pieces together, and a couple times a year perform them at church or at parties in her home for her voice/instrument students; she's kind to me, I usually end up with (fairly) easy cello or bass or timpani). Later wrapping the gifts for my girls out in Chicago and my brother & wife in Austin, I want to get those in the mail early this week. And on Sunday, doing bell-ringing and choir-singing at church in the morning, and attending the Cappella Cantorum concert in the afternoon.

Yep, a bit busy!

What, you'll get everything all set, then have to leave? Will you be visiting the family for long?
