*Passes out sparklers* It's time for another Fiesta Friday celebration! Can't Post

Greetings, one and all!

This is a long weekend for us U.S. TORnfolk, as Monday is our Independence Day/4th of July holiday (thus the sparklers). B.G. and I used to watch the local fireworks display from our loft windows, but they've moved it to another side of town. So, we can't see them up close any longer but can still see quite a few displays between here and the mountains from a distance.

My back has slowly been coming right (emphasis on s-l-o-w-l-y). I still can't sit in a regular chair for any amount of time, so my laptop is now set up on the high counter between our kitchen and dining room and I'm using it standing up, which is probably better all around fitness-wise. I also found some great back exercises online that I've been doing religiously several times a day to hopefully prevent another 'incident.' We'll be having my brother and his family over this weekend to celebrate the holiday and get their help doing some things that require more than one-person, that I'm not up to helping with yet.

So, what are your plans for the weekend? If you're in the U.S., are you going to celebrate the holiday? The buffet is full of hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, trifles, and chocolate brownies, and in addition to the usual vast selection of drinks at the bar, ice cream floats are available upon request!

*puts quarters on juke box* Play us something celebratory!

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!! CoolHeartSmile

*waves sparkler* Happy Fourth, Altaira! [In reply to] Can't Post

Glad to know that your back is getting better, but still, what a pain to go through until it gets back to normal!

I'll grab a hot dog, and might I have an ice-cream float of chocolate-chip ice cream in root beer, please? It's been getting into the 80's here - summer weather, but that's still too hot for my liking.

We have our annual town craft show on the town green this weekend. Saturday is supposed to have thunderstorms popping up, but Sunday should be a perfect day to go browse the stalls and pick up some unique Christmas gifts.

And the town will be shooting off its fireworks out over L.I.Sound in a couple weeks after another fair that takes over the town's main street. But on Monday we'll be hearing plenty from surrounding towns! Laugh Have a fantastic time with your family, what perfect timing for getting together with them! Smile

Vague plans [In reply to] Can't Post

My current rural town has a "Loggerodeo" festival, featuring chainsaw carving, a parade, rodeo, and fireworks over the river on the Fourth. I'm a big fan of barrel racing so will make sure to attend that too.

Probably make a slow start on my upcoming trip, by doing laundry & generally cleaning up - I like to leave a clean house to come home to every time I go away. I'm making a bit of a loop trip around north-eastern Washington; my cousins live way up in the NE corner, and I have several other good friends near them; then I will drive back along my favorite road in the state and make a stopover in the Methow Valley where I used to live before driving over the North Cascades and home. Hoping the road to this overlook will be snow-free, although we had a lot more than our usual snowpack this year:

We continue to have a cool summer (no one is complaining!) so I'll have a London Fog please!

Christmas (shopping) in July! [In reply to] Can't Post

I bet you find some wonderful and unique gifts at the crafts show, plus get some of your Christmas shopping done *way* early. A win-win I'd say.

Yes, one of the projects we need help with is untangling our deck furniture from its usual winter pile-up, washing it off and getting the cushions on the chairs. Afterwards we can all sit outside, relax, and enjoy whatever munchies we feel like having.

Speaking of enjoying, have a fabulous long weekend! Smile

Barrel racing! [In reply to] Can't Post

Is that where you balance atop the barrel and roll it through the water with your feet? That takes skill!

I hope the weather stays nice for your trip. Washington is a beautiful state! How long does the drive to the "other corner" usually take?

Road trip! [In reply to] Can't Post

That sounds like a fun one for sure, and wow, that pass/overlook looks amazing! It's great that you have friends and family to see and stay with along the way. Is this an annual trek, or an occasional one?

Enjoy your London Fog, and have a fun time at the festival activities!

Hanging in for the last week of term [In reply to] Can't Post

We have a lovely Twindemic of Covid and Influenza A, along with RSV and a tummy bug for good measure, all circulating around in a delicious bug soup.

It took me four hours last Sunday to figure out staffing for our unit, and then I had to redo it every day during the week. Between Covid and flu, we are being hit hard and I needed to close our unit for two days and then stagger attendance on the other three days. It's the same in most schools. This wave of illness seems to be hitting adults particularly.

Bring on the holidays!

We are having mostly fine and very frosty weather here, which suits me. Midgey finds it a bit tough though.

Half our team [In reply to] Can't Post

has been home sick this week with Covid, flu or colds. I've also been WFH just so that I'm away from any greeblies that are floating around. (Also, one of the Covid-catchers sits right behind me so I thought it prudent to stay away from others.)

You'll have well-earned the holiday break! Let's hope it's a circuit-breaker and the number of infections has dropped when the next term starts.

As for me, I'm a bit achey after a good bike-ride yesterday. I'll go for a walk this morning to work out the kinks. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Lots of fun to watch the really good riders.

You were thinking of log rolling. They're not doing that here.

Happy long weekend! [In reply to] Can't Post

It's much needed. Thankfully LA is cooling off slightly, so no dreaded 4th of July heatwave. There's something about oppressive heat and firework smoke that don't blend well for me. At least I'll only have to suffer the latter. Angelic

We'll be with my girlfriend's family for the holiday/fireworks, though a roommate's girlfriend is visiting so we'll have some hosting to do too.

Sorry to all the 'sibs being surrounded by Covid at the moment! My mom just got over her first case (it was very mild so all good), and a friend who was visiting town recently ended up getting fairly sick after our hangout was canceled at the last moment. So somehow I've managed to dodge it still. *knocks on wood*

I think I missed what happened to your back, Altaira, but I'm sorry to hear it! Have you been to the doctor or are you just trying to figure it out yourself for now? I've been doing the latter still for my own back problems (girlfriend's cousin is a PT and thinks it's a disc problem), though I should get it checked out soon. Wishing you a painless weekend!

Wishing everyone a happy weekend, and cross your fingers that we don't lose more than one or two palm trees in LA due to them being set on fire by fireworks (yes, this happens every year dozens of times citywide and it's ridiculous/sad). CrazyPirate

The 4th must be every town's fire department's nightmare. Tongue

I'm glad your mom had only a mild case of Covid - and that you keep managing to dodge it!

That's an interesting term to use to describe those germs, it sounds a bit like "grubbies". Any nasty-sounding moniker fits them well.

How long and where did you go on your bike ride?

Barrel racing is quite popular at the enormous San Antonio, Texas, rodeo, which attracts competitors from all over the US and Canada.

school schedule terminology [In reply to] Can't Post

In most of the US, K-12 schools and universities have autumn semesters beginning late August/early September and ending late December/early January. Winter semester starts in January and runs through late May/early June. Semesters last 16 to 18 weeks. Short optional summer school occurs in June and July. A few schools run year-round, usually to alleviate crowding problems: students are divided into four groups, but only three attend at the same time.

Please enlighten me as to scheduling patterns in Oz/NZ and Europe. My online courses from Cambria in Wales never seem to align with my RL.

In any case, enjoy your holidays.

When I lived near the US/Canadian border [In reply to] Can't Post

(Port Huron/Sarnia), we'd celebrate a four-day weekend beginning with Canada Day July 1 and ending July 4. DH's family lived in the US side on the edge of Lake St. Clair, and we'd have wonderful views of the fireworks both days reflected in the water.

San Antonio is nicknamed Military City, so we have major fireworks in several places. Because of the climate, I stay home to watch the Boston, DC, and San Antonio performances on TV.

Yum, a float is tempting ... have you ever tried making one with cherry vanilla or cherry chocolate ice cream?

Happy and healthy holidays to all!

But of course all workplaces are having to manage.

I did manage to catch Influenza A, which knocked me out for about 5 days. Hooray for the vaccine though - I know how much worse it could have been had I not had that protection.

I don't know about other places [In reply to] Can't Post

Here in NZ, primary schools (Age 5 - 12ish) and secondary schools (Age 13 - 18ish) are roughly the same in their schedules, but it is actually up to each school. As long as we have the correct number of half days per term, we decide our own start and finish dates.
There are four terms of roughly 10 weeks. The first three terms are separated by two weeks of holidays each (or, what us teachers call non-contact time!) We usually start for the year at the beginning of February.
So roughly, Term 1 is from early Feb to mid-April. Term 2 is early May to early July. Term 3 is late July to late September. And Term 4 is mid October to around the 18th December.

Term 4 is the scariest Term of all. It's a hot mess of end of year parties, trips, and events, end of year assessments and reports, transitioning students who are finishing to their new schools for the following year, trying to prepare for your own Christmas and holiday plans, in a delicious soup of absolutely exhausted students and teachers.
I don't recommend it. Laugh

Happy 4th of July Everyone!

I'm so sorry your back is taking so long to behave, but it sounds like you're on the right track :) Having family there will definitely help... and kudos to B.G. for being such a MAHVELLOUS HERO!

I'm in the middle (day 2 of 3) of moving my daughter/g'son into their townhouse rental and doing old apt cleaning (BIG job), so I'm dashing out the door. It figured that my first 1/2 hour there yesterday (Friday) I kicked the front apt bldg metal door to snug in a doorstopper that gave way and I slammed my big toe into the door... sheering the toenail from the bed... so I did some hobbling up and down stairs carrying boxes and furniture for about 10 hrs. It's better today, but it took 2 bandaids to stop the bleeding. AWWWW.... POOR GRAMMA ;) But did get to drive the BIG moving truck! :D All's better today, so off we go!

Have a great holiday weekend everyone!!!!
