Frodo in the BBC Lord of the Rings; then Bilbo, and a fine actor..... "I sit beside the fire and think of how the world will beWhen winter comes without a spring that I shall ever see...." Farewell, Sir Ian, go safely
For still there are so many things that I have never seen: in every wood and every spring there is a different green. . .

A life well lived. Ian Holm will be missed. Condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and many, many fans. I haven't looked at the Guardian coverage, but I will note that Mr. Holm also voiced Frodo Baggins in the BBC radio adaptation of The Lord of the Rings.

I've wondered how it's been for him. This is so sad. He's been such an anchor for sharing Tolkien's stories on radio and film. Bless him, his family, friends and fans. He's a treasure...

His Bllbo will always be my favorite, as much as I appreciate what Martin Freeman did with the character, Ian Holm's take on Bilbo will always be the definitive version of that character for me. Alongside his phenomenal work on LOTR, his cameos in "The Hobbit" brief as they were, are highlights of the trilogy for me. like Bilbo, Mr. Holm has now sailed to the Undying lands, he is now in the cherished company of Sir Christopher Lee, Andrew Lesnie and the Professor himself. This truly is a sad day for all Tolkien fans around the world, may he rest in peace.

It's astonishing that the only Academy Award nomination he ever got was for Chariots of Fire. Among his many other fine performances, which includes excellent work in only somewhat interesting films like Joe Gould's Secret and The Sweet Hereafter, one of my all around favorites is Big Night. R.I.P.

His role in From Hell stays with me today, and he was brilliant in The Madness of King George. He's given audiences so much joy over the years. It's sad to hear of his passing, but what a life he's lived.

I first remember becoming aware of Sir Ian when listening to the BBC radio adaptation back in the 1980s. I was delighted when he was cast as Bilbo, as he matched my own vision of the character so strongly. I've enjoyed reading the tributes, here and elsewhere. Rest in peace, Sir Ian, after a life fully lived.

hello n.e.- loved Ian Holm in Chariots of Fire--hence my headline--holm drunk and celebrating with ben cross/abrahams at the end, the race won: "we've got today and we've got it for keeps..." very inspiring words and moment in film. his place in hobbit/LOTR universe is assured, also did bbc radio voiceover for frodo in broadcast mini series. always thought he was believable, versatile, wide range of roles--bad replicant in alien, a russian communist commander in nicholas and alexandra, and one of my total faves-Napoleon in time bandits. best wishes and RIP Mr. Holm/Baggins. The 13th Warrior, Left Field Caliphate From the scroll rooms of Gondor, "Where does the power come from to see the race through to its end; from within" - great sentiment for LOTR or Chariots.

I think its noteworthy and admirable that Jackson kept Holm's condition a secret. The most we got out of him is "Ian Holm is a little bit too old to travel."

A sad day for his family, friends, and fans. Holm was fantastic in anything he was in, and his Bilbo was grand. I can’t help but think of his final scenes in ROTK and think of our dear Bilbo setting sail. Namárië

I have never really thought of it before; but even though Bilbo is basically a cameo in the LOTR trilogy --- appearing in the beginning of FOTR, reappearing in the middle of FOTR, and then once again at the very end of ROTK --- Holm's performance is really essential to the whole enterprise. In the Extended Edition of FOTR, Bilbo is the first character to speak after Galadriel. Holm's Bilbo introduces us to the Shire and the Hobbit way of life, provides the first hint that the One Ring can corrupt event decent people, while also illustrating the resilience and essential goodness of Hobbits. For such a short amount of screen time, that is quite a bit of ground to cover, which speaks to Holm's talents. Holm's voiceover narrations at the beginning of FOTR and AUJ are excellent and engrossing, perfectly luring the viewer into the magic of Middle Earth. Although in terms of sheer screen time Holm's role is small, it is hard to imagine anyone else bringing the elderly Bilbo to life as well as Holm did. It is very difficult for me to separate Holm and Bilbo after all these years. Part of me thinks that if I trekked down to New Zealand and visited the Hobbiton set, I would find old Bilbo in Bag End at his desk writing even now. I found Peter Jackson's tribute to Holm that he posted on Facebook earlier today quite moving (https://www.facebook.com/notes/peter-jackson/the-wonderful-sir-ian-holm/10158439252151558/). Jackson mentions that even 10 or so years ago as the Hobbit trilogy was ramping up, that Holm was already suffering from Parkinson's disease and in semi-retirement. Delivering the performance he did under those circumstances is nothing less than phenomenal. Those who cherish the PJ films, warts and all, should all feel blessed that the Hobbit films included the final performances of two massively talented actors: Christopher Lee and Ian Holm. I am looking forward to listening to Holm play Frodo in the old BBC radio adaptation of LOTR.

Although in terms of sheer screen time Holm's role is small, it is hard to imagine anyone else bringing the elderly Bilbo to life as well as Holm did. It is very difficult for me to separate Holm and Bilbo after all these years. Its true Holm's part in the production wasn't a big one. I believe his work was done within no more than six weeks, all of it entirely on sound-stages: I don't know that he ever set foot in Hobbiton. As for separating him from the character, it bears repeating that Holm was Jackson's absolute, number-one choice for Bilbo. Great actors were up for that part - Sir Anthony Hopkins was considered, and Sylvester McCoy even served as a backup choice - but Jackson had his sights set on Holm from very early on.
as the Hobbit trilogy was ramping up, that Holm was already suffering from Parkinson's disease and in semi-retirement. Complete retirement, according to his portfolio: he hadn't worked in films since 2005, and had only recorded a vocal performances for Ratatouille and a couple of TV programs soon thereafter. This makes his return to the role of Bilbo his final film role, and his return from retirement should be seen as akin to Pesci's return for The Irishman.
