*Puts out Welcome sign* It's time for Fiesta! Can't Post

Okay, now I know I'm, losing it. I did a Fiesta Post and now it's nowhere to be found. Must have hit the wrong button. Anyway, here it is again (or something close)!

Welcome to Fiesta!

Last week we had a ginormous snowstorm here and the street in front of our house (a side-street not plowed by the city). We got 13 inches (33 cm), but the lucky folks in Boulder got 23 inches (58 cm)! Luckily, it's warming up and the sidewalks and driveway have been clear for days (no more shoveling).

Unfortunately, my sister had to go back to the ICU yesterday and we're thinking it's just a matter of time now. Frown Positive thoughts and prayers are welcome. At this point I just want her to be comfortable which it seems like she is (she's unconscious/asleep all of the time).

On a lighter note, have you started decorating for the holidays? Shopping? My early decorating hit a bunch of snags but I'm hoping to get back to it this weekend and tackle the tree! I also found a classic Christmas tunes channel on XM (satellite) radio, so I've been singing along loudly to the surrounding traffic on my commutes and errands)

*kicks juke box* Along those lines, here's one of my all-time holiday favorite classics: Nat King Cole singing "The Christmas Song" from 1961. What a voice! What are some of your favs? Let us know.

Our weather has been tolerable. [In reply to] Can't Post

The worst of the cold front missed the Buffalo area, though it has strongly impacted New England. We're expecting some freezing temperatures for the next day or so, followed by some milder weather.

I'm really sorry to hear about your sister, Altaira. She's blessed to have a loving family with her. Be sure to look after yourself, too, at this time.

It's a muggy, cloudy morning here. We're due for some needed rain this weekend; we're quite dry for the start of summer, although my vegetable plants are going gangbusters so my prep work seems to have set them up well. And, I have a new computer, so being forced to stay inside won't be all bad. Smile

I had my team's Christmas party yesterday at a local bowling club, and today is the staff Social Club Christmas party ... at the same bowling club. Crazy What are the chances?

I still have one sibling to buy for, for Christmas, and I'm still coming up with zilch ideas. I'll have to put my pondering cap on.

Have a great weekend, everyone. Smile

If you live in the Buffalo area [In reply to] Can't Post

You're used to cold weather! My brother and sister-in-law lived in Buffalo for a couple of years. She's from the south and it was her first experience with snow. Talk about inundation, lol!

It reminds me of B.G.s first year living here in Colorado. He had seen snow, but had never seen it snowing. He was fascinated and delighted with the first few light snow falls, then we had two record-setting blizzards over two weekends, and it snowed every weekend afterwards for about 6 weeks. Needless to say, his attitude towards snow was never the same. Laugh

Have an enjoyable and warm weekend!

It sounds like it was holiday party-central for you this week. Any other parties coming up?

How fun that you have a new computer, and how great that your veggies are doing well. Remind me what all you planted.

Enjoy your weekend.

Prayers for your sister and your family [In reply to] Can't Post

I must have missed what is going on, but my prayers are with you and yours. It sounds terminal? I'm so sorry to hear that Unsure

This is officially the first year I've ever not decorated for Christmas, and its bittersweet. We don't really have the ability to decorate our travel trailer, so are having to rely on the surrounding farms for our Christmas lights this year. The girls drew a Christmas tree on paper and tried to tape it to a cabinet, but it wouldn't stick. It's all right though-we usually spend the entire Christmas day at my inlaws anyway.

I have debated on asking hubby to hang lights on the edge of the roof once the rest of the shingles are on, but it seems a little odd to put them on new construction when it isn't anywhere near being finished...but sheathing is done now (YES!!!) so as soon as we get our hurricane ties on we can schedule shear inspection. Hoping and praying that goes well so we can housewrap it, install windows and doors, and put a layer of black plastic over the housewrap to make it watertight. Unfortunately, it's WAY too cold to stain our siding now, so it may have to wait until spring unless I can figure out a venue where I can do it that's warm enough for the stain to dry.

So right now, just waiting on shear inspection (we're doing ties tomorrow. It's already nailed into blocking so it's not going anywhere but code requires ties as well), the second half of the roof (currently protected by tar paper and said plastic and a tarp on top of it-need a good weather weekend day to finish up), housewrap and plastic, and doors and windows. Once that's all done, then we can breathe a little more easily knowing that our interior and exterior is protected from the winter weather (and we can finish interior framing and get started on electrical and plumbing!).

And once we have the house watertight, I can start my farmhouse dining sets business to bring in more funds for construction Smile We had enough to get it weather-tight and get things started, but the business will pay for all finish work as was the plan. I will probably get a set a week done after we do school with the girls in the morning (they're not hard to put together per se, and sell for a good price) and am looking forward to it Smile

So today will be spent relaxing, possibly watching a condensed version of LOTR (I usually pick which group to follow- the Three Hunters, or Frodo/Sam, since it makes it easier to get through in one day that way), and working on my fan fiction while I try to feel better. We had a horrid bout with the flu last week, and now for some reason I have a lingering cough, my stomach and throat feels like it's made of lava, I'm burping sulfur and having constant severe acid reflux, stomach itself really hurts and am very nauseated and exhausted due to not sleeping well from all of the above. Has anyone else dealt with that set of symptoms immediately post-influenza? It's really bizarre and I'm really not feeling well thanks to it Unsure

So as odd as it sounds, I guess I'll ask for some strong antacid (mine at home currently is not working), and some warm apple cider and whatever else my good barkeep thinks will settle my incredibly unsettled stomach Unsure

(Fun factoid too- you mentioned Nat King Cole. My aunt works for TSA at Spokane International Airport in Spokane, WA and she once confiscated Natalie Cole's toothpaste because it was regular size and thus too big for TSA regulations. Ms. Cole threw a fit and said, "Do you know who I am?" and she said, "Yeah, and I don't care. Your toothpaste is too big. Sorry for the inconvenience." She's also met Viggo Mortensen (since he used to live in Clark Fork, ID and still has a residence there) and apparently he isn't overfond of TSA either-though to be fair who is? Anyway, thought you'd appreciate it Smile).

Haha! Great story [In reply to] Can't Post

I can't imagine the odd things (and people) the TSA encounters.
A good antacid sounds like it will do the trick, and maybe try sipping some Sprite, 7-up, or something like Gator-aid for your tummy, not diet so you get some sugar to get some electrolytes. Let the soda go flat if it bothers your throat.

Get better and have a great weekend!

I don't drink soda [In reply to] Can't Post

Haven't had a soda since 2012, since when I was sick it tried to kill me (no joke the pain was worse than labor!). Since it's terrible for you, I didn't go back after my surgery even though I probably could.

I might try Gatorade though. I tried Mylanta (as I currently have it) with no success, so I may have to run to the store and get something else to do the trick.

Thanks!

Oh.... I'm so sorry... [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm sorry about your Sister. That she's comfortable is welcome; but this is just so sad. You both have been in my prayers and will continue to be. *warm hug*

A hard storm apparently hit as I was driving south on my journey south (one of them). Coming home I've found loads of snow that wasn't around about 20 miles south of me and there's evidence of 2 (of many) huge trees that fell across my road. Branches and trees down everywhere! Luckily, all is well in my yard and home.

I haven't started with decorating yet; but I have been listening to my all-time favourite Christmas album: Cantate Domino (Christmas Album). Most of it gives me goosebumps, but one is especially beautiful: Maria's Lullaby [Schlichte Weisen, Op. 76, Vol. 6: No. 52, Mariš Wiegenled.

Thank you for taking such great care of us, Altaira :) Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Good to hear you arrived home safely! [In reply to] Can't Post

Actually, we heard from the doctors today and while she's still very weak and will be in the hospital for a while, she's expected to eventually be discharged at some point. I'm worried about what this latest bout has done to her (i.e., how *much* she'll recover), and I know she probably doesn't have a long life ahead of her, but it's something for now!
That song is absolutely lovey! So soothing. Thanks for the link, and you have a wonderful weekend too! Heart

Yeah [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks. I paid a crew that was awesome to come and wrap up the sheeting since we were so sick and the weather is so icky. I couldn't care much that it's cold- it's the precipitation getting inside I was worried about. So they finished what we were too sick to do last week thank goodness. They only charged $800 for it too and do excellent work Smile

It is, but it's life. It's more waiting for inspection outcomes that drives me crazy, because (though they've been very nice so far) a failed inspection causes delays to continue as one rectifies whatever they missed the first go-around. I always get super anxious right before inspections, especially since this is a very large part of the house. If inspection fails, rectification may be very difficult to do (depending on what it was) because disassembling anything at this stage is extremely time-consuming and difficult.

Thank you Gramma!

What surprised me was that Microsoft Office is discontinuing support for Word 2007. Instead, for the new programme you have to pay an annual subscription. Mad Cheeky beggars.

I went with a free programme that is Word in all but name.

I'm sitting here listening to a live-stream recital [In reply to] Can't Post

Good friends of ours who have kids around the same age as ours have a son graduating this year with a degree in vocal performance and music education. I used to babysit him and here his is doing a 45 minute concert ! So far we've heard 4 different genres. Pretty impressive!

Holidays are more complicated now that the kids are scattered over 3 states and 5 different zip codes. But I just heard that I'll have 1 whole day with all of them at home!

I'm thinking of you and your family, Altaira. It sounds like the care she is receiving is keeping her comfortable and that in itself is a blessing.

You and your family and her medical team are taking as best care of your sister as you all possibly can! This is tough to go through at any time of year, but now especially. Sending lots of thoughts and prayers for comfort for all of you, and for you to be able to get done what needs to be done. Heart

You did get a good-sized dump of snow! The storm that came through here last week left us with 3 inches/8 cm of snow, which is not enough to bother with shoveling and most had melted by the next day; there's only little piles left, the snow-plow debris! We have the table-top tree up and decorated, and some decorations around the house, and need to pick out a wreath today to replace the autumn leaves one that's still on our front door Blush.

And time to break out the Christmas CDs and records (yes, vinyl)! I've got everything from Boston Pops to jazz to Mannheim Steamroller, but the family favorite is the soundtrack from a John Denver & Muppets show from decades ago. John and Rowlf: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZSVfxk8ouM

Enjoy the it's-nearly-holiday-time weekend, everyone! Cool
