Anthology, gardening with the Gaffer (gotta have some comedy relief in there somewhere), and "Other"- a better story arc/closure for Tauriel if they go with PJ's canon. Wouldn't mind seeing something about Elladan and Elrohir, either.

It seems to me that the story of the sons of Elrond is very much intertwined with many of the events of the Third Age of Middle-earth. They doubtless had parts to play in the defense of Arthedain and the fall of Angmar; they helped to train the sons of Dúnedain chieftains right up to the fostering of Aragorn as Estel; they rescued their mother from Orcs only to see her grow weary of Middle-earth and take ship into the West; and, the pair accompanied the Grey Company, following Aragorn through the Paths of the Dead, to the defense of Minas Tirith and to the Black Gate itself.

Having never watched "Game of Thrones," I'm hoping that it won't be a M-e meets GoT thing, as so many here worry about. I suppose something in the 3rd Age would be good, since that's the only one I'm familiar with. A young Aragorn series would be fine, but I could care less about Arwen so probably not that first one.
Having said that, if they want to make a "Game of Thorin" series starring Richard Armitage, well I'd be okay with that!

Truthfully, according to the legendarium, after Aragorn first meets Arwen just after he turns twenty years old, he doesn't see her again for twenty-nine years when they are reunited in Lothlórien. This takes place in T.A. 2980, some months after Aragorn, as Thorongil, leaves the service of Ecthelion of Gondor.
I'm not hopeful about the chances of a full series that has the Longbeards as its focus; however, we might see such a thing as a part of a Middle-earth anthology series.

...he said in an interview last week, that he's interested in this new series, is not sure what part he'd have in it, but it would definitely not be as a Dwarf.
I would like to see other LotR/Hobbit actors appearing here and there in it, too, as completely different characters. That would be fun.

I could see a number of potential roles for Richard Armitage (most of them rather kingly):
- Arathorn, father of Aragorn
- Beren
- King Bard
- King Arvedui
- Eärnur, the last King of Gondor
- Ar-Pharazôn of Númenor
- King Bain, son of Bard
I also see that the idea of an anthology series is gaining support.

That all the scripts for the entire first season aren't being pounded out by a couple of guys locked in a hotel room over a long weekend.
That a gig as a supporting character in the series isn't the grand prize on America's Next Top Model.
That the producers don't think the breakup of One Direction is a great opportunity to cast a demographically perfect Aragorn.
That they don't hire a supermodel with no acting experience to play Arwen.
That they don't hire the same cgi company that did Justice League.
That the Weinsteins don't get a production credit.
That "Canon? LOL!" isn't a constant on-set catchphrase.
That there isn't an episode where Aragorn and Sauron mind-swap.
That there isn't an episode where Aragorn has an evil twin.
I better stop now. I'm starting to not feel so good...

Both because I think it's the overwhelmingly likely option and I don't want to set myself up for disappointment, and because I think that most other possibilities would be either (a) impossible to do justice to since Amazon only purchased the rights to LOTR or (b) have even less written about them in any of Tolkien's works than Young Aragorn (not that there's a ton on that topic either).

As far as I can tell, we are not certain yet just how much material is covered by the rights now held by Amazon. They might cover nothing more than LotR and its appendices or they might be far more extensive than we could have imagined. The involvement of the Tolkien Estate opens up the potential for the series and what it could encompass.

Amazon's press release announcing the project made reference only to LOTR and Variety specifically stated that the rights to The Silmarillion are not included in the deal. I haven't seen anything to suggest otherwise except for one anonymous person on Reddit who claims to be a screenwriter but disappeared when asked to back up his claims regarding the rights situation (disclosure: I am "nolondil" in the linked thread). It's certainly possible that the Estate will offer the rights to additional works for sale in the future but as far as Amazon's first series is concerned I think the preponderance of evidence suggests it will be pretty much LOTR-centered.
(I also think it's unlikely that Amazon is spending the better part of half a billion dollars--after factoring in production and marketing costs--to produce a series that does not make heavy use of specific elements of Middle-earth and characters who are already well-known to a general viewing audience, but that's more of a suspicion than anything I can attempt to demonstrate.)

Thanks for reminding me about The Silmarillion reportedly being excluded from the deal. That still leaves the Second Age as a potential focus, though I agree that the travels of young Aragorn might be most likely. However, an anthology series could explore a number of different periods, places and characters including some familiar to viewers of the films.
We have been specifically told, though, that the series will be set before the War of the Ring.

It has been confusing (for me, anyway) trying to keep track of what's happening. Variety's statement about the Silm rights wasn't even part of the original article; they slipped it in a day later without making note of the change occurring so I only happened to see it because I re-read the piece looking for something else.
Anyway, I don't personally think that the series is likely to be about the Second Age. There is very little source material that Amazon has to work with and while they could try to flesh out a full series from the scant mentions of the S.A. in the Appendices, that would be treading a very fine legal line (though again, the legal situation could change in the future). I also don't think it would be satisfying to anyone to try to make, say, a Fall of Númenor miniseries where you have to exclude most of the interesting details because they're in off-limits books. Hypothetically, I could see a War of the Elves and Sauron adaptation being interesting, but Celebrimbor isn't even mentioned in Appendix A so the source material just isn't really there until and unless the Silm and UT become available.

A series centered on the Fall of Númenor just wouldn't be the same without access to the "Akallabêth" as published in The Silmarillion. In my own opinion it would not even be worth attempting. Right now, I just want to know who is the showrunner for this series and what is their vision for it.

I don't watch enough TV dramas to have a sense of who might be in the running as potential showrunners, but once one is announced I'll probably at least read up on their previous work.
