The Back Porch [In reply to] Can't Post

In Reply To
I have them at the pass where the goblins captured them on the 28th.

The goblins' Back Porch must have been close to the eastern end of the High Pass given that the company had been captured either late on July 16 or early on July 17 (on the 18th or 19th day after leaving Rivendell); Gandalf and Bilbo had probably passed the site at least a couple of weeks ago.

Figure an estimated 15 days to travel through the pass and another three days to reach Rivendell on the evening of May 1. April 28 doesn't work at all. April 15 or 16 would be closer to the mark.

hmmmmmm..... [In reply to] Can't Post

I shall investigate it! I'm afraid it will have to wait until next April for any adjustments. Firstly since we've already passed GO and because my brain is totally fried from FD and RL with more yet to come ;)

This is great, though! I really appreciate it! *bows deeply* :D

TIME - April 27 [In reply to] Can't Post

Today in Middle-earth

April 27, 2941 (S.R. 1341)
1. Thorin and Company ride out of Hobbiton at 11:00 a.m.
(from Karen Wynn Fonstad, The Atlas of Middle-earth)
..."...Bilbo began to whistle loudly and to forget about the night before. In fact he was just sitting down to a nice little second breakfast in the dining-room by the open window, when in walked Gandalf.
..."My dear fellow... ...whenever are you going to come? What about an early start?---and here you are having breakfast, or whatever you call it, at half past ten. They left you the message...."
..."...What message?" said poor Mr. Baggins all in a fluster.
..."Great Elephants!" said Gandalf, "you are not at all yourself this morning---you have never dusted the mantelpiece!"
..."What's that got to do with it? I have had enough to do with washing up for fourteen!"
..."If you had dusted the mantelpiece, you would have found this just under the clock," said Gandalf, handing Bilbo a note...."

..."...That leaves you just ten minutes. You will have to run," said Gandalf.
..."But---" said Bilbo.
..."No time for it," said the wizard.
..."But---" said Bilbo again.
..."No time for that either! Off you go!"
...To the end of his days Bilbo could never remember how he found himself outside, without a hat, walking-stick or any money, or anything that he usually took when he went out; leaving his second breakfast half-finished..."
..."...That's how they all came to start, jogging off from the inn one fine morning just before May, on laden ponies and Bilbo was wearing a dark-green hood (a little weather-stained) and a dark-green cloak borrowed from Dwalin....

......They had not been riding very long when up came Gandalf very splendid on a white horse. He had brought a lot of pocket-handkerchiefs, and Bilbo's pipe and tobacco."

No, you can't retroactively go back to mid-April to insert such an entry. However, you can refrain from posting it knowing that the date of April 28 must be false. Gandalf and Bilbo most likely reached the western end of the pass on the 28th, though it might have been early on April 29.

I live to serve. And how great is it that this April 27 actually falls on a Thursday? This month in this year is fully in sync with the Shire Calendar.

TIME - April 17 [In reply to] Can't Post

Today in Middle-earth

April 17, 2942 (S.R. 1342)
1. Bilbo and Gandalf reach the old goblin stronghold that led Bilbo to the Ring.
(determined from text-TH: Return Journey)
..."At last they came up the long road, and reached the very pass where the goblins had captured them before… …and looking backward they saw a white sun shining over the outstretched lands. There behind lay Mirkwood, blue in the distance, and darkly green at the nearer edge even in the spring. There… …was the Lonely Mountain on the edge of eyesight. On its highest peak snow yet unmelted was gleaming pale.
..."So comes snow after fire, and even dragons have their ending!" said Bilbo, and he turned his back on his adventure. The Tookish part was getting very tired, and the Baggins was daily getting stronger. "I wish now only to be in my own arm-chair!"”

I stand corrected. [In reply to] Can't Post

You might not be able to insert an entry for an older date (at least withough mod assistance). But posting an addendum is the next best thing. Tongue

And I was mistaken in my last post, wasn't I? Gandalf introduced himself to Bilbo on Wednesday, April 25 and the Unexpected Party was on Thursday April 26. The company set out on Friday. Our April doesn't align again with the Shire Reckoning until next year. My bad.
