Baggins... Shire... Can't Post

When the Black Riders are looking for Frodo in FOTR, we see a Rider approach a man outside chopping wood. Do you think it was Farmer Maggot? Or perhaps the Old Gaffer? I'm not sure he was actually credited in the film cast.

Thanks for the page, M. It probably doesn't matter but I know you like to tie up loose ends. There's an "unidentified Hobbit child" at the bottom of the page. I'm inclined to trust intuitive jumps and the first thing I thought of when I saw the photo was the scene where the children chase Gandalf's wagon as he enters Hobbiton and sets off some fireworks.

Thank you Ithilisa - but [In reply to] Can't Post

On second look Bywater Road runs through Bywater and through (or very close to Hobbiton). I don't take this map as absolutely accurate but I can find no textual reference as to exactly where the Ivy Bush is located except that it's on the Bywater Road. According to this map it could be in either Bywater or Hobbiton or somewhere in between?

We already have The Green Dragon located there. Though this doesn't mean there couldn't have been more than one inn in Bywater, of course; it's just that I feel it's more likely The Ivy Bush is located either in Hobbiton or somewhere in between the two villages.

Also called the Bridge of Mithithel (sp?). No it doesn’t go over the Loudwater, it crosses the Hoarwell.

The distance – pure guess. I think the High Hay was about 20-25 miles, so I guess half- about 10 miles, Ferry to Bridge.

Yes, it's Redhorn Gate OR Redhorn Pass [In reply to] Can't Post

I was never quite sure why Tolkien called a pass over a mountain “a gate”….

Yes there was an “inn” in Minas Tirith – The Old Guesthouse. I don’t know if it served mead, and could then be considered another “tavern” or if it was just a rooming house.

The town would be Tharbad. In the mid to late Third Age there was also a ford across the Greyflood although I don’t think it was ever called the Ford of Tharbad. This is where Boromir lost his horse in his quest for Imladris.

Give two names for the stone monoliths that lie on either side of the Anduin just north of Nen Hithoel…..

Which often happens when Darkstone’s rind arrives. (Is that rind or mind? – nope rind will do.) But welcome anyhoo! Smile

Faramir, yes Grond is correct. But there was also an original Grond which was the mace of Morgoth. It was known as the “Hammer of the Underworld”. I don’t think Grond the battering ram was called such.
Grond the ram was 100’ long with an iron head shaped like a wolf.

BF, I don’t know of any other name for Radagast than Radagast the Brown (unless you’re delving movie-wise which I would have blocked?). But I believe he has a Quenya name somewhere which translates to lover of birds? Maybe some of the woodland creatures like foxes and such called him “Rad”? Cool

How many names for THE Ring can you think of? I can come up w/ 7 but I know there are more…..

The way I worded the question the answer is 105.
Legolas sees 105 plus 2 empty saddles. And 15 men were killed battling the orcs.
So Eomer’s original eored had 120.

But I believe an eored can be most any size as the Rohirrim split into 3 or 4 on the Pelennor of a couple thousand each.

In case I forget here's HeartHeartHeart for Valentine's Day.

Lots of folks forget about the Master Stone kept at Avallone.

I take it that father-name is the same as father's name.... Finwe

Ok, you can say 'Gottcha' [In reply to] Can't Post

So he was named (sort of) after his father Finwe as Curufinwe, and Feanor was his epesse. I knew of the word 'epesse' but thought maybe father-name was an Estonian thingy. Unsure

Name the thirteen Dwarves at the Unexpected Party.

Extra credit - Day of the week and which Dwarf was first to arrive?

Correct BlackFox [In reply to] Can't Post

I always remember Wednesday because Bilbo complains that he should have written in his diary something like "Gandalf, tea, Wednesday".

We don't know who was the last to arrive because four of them tumble in all at once. But I always think of it as Thorin.
