     Thranduil Appreciation Thread Part XVII

Lurker and Blackfox did their best in tipping TA XVI a couple of hours ago. Finally, I have the honor to open HeartHeart Thranduil Appreciation Thread Part XVII HeartHeart

Any and all appreciation of Thranduil and everything related to him happens here.
All Thranduil Thralls, and appreciating non-Thralls are welcome Smile
So feel free to jump in at any time!

The Thranduil Appreciation thread count:

I | II (Originating threads by Rowan Greene) | III | IV | V | VI (Threads by Lurker in the Mirk)
VII (Thread by Eruvandi) | VIII | IX | X | XI | XII |
XIII | XIV (Threads by Lurker in the Mirk)
XV (Thread by Eruvandi) | XVI (Thread by Lurker in the Mirk)

Thranduil Appreciation Lexicon aka the little TAspeak garden Tongue
  • BTS Easter Egg Find (aka BEEF): Those moments in the BTS when Thranduil/LP flashes by (see Unexpected Flash of Elf) on screen or some information is found. See also "Ninja-Hugger"
  • Bubba: Nickname of Thranduil's beloved War-Elk. See also "Maximum Fabulosity Exposure"
  • Equal Opportunistic Thrall: One who thralls whom her/his infidelity fancies. Shamelessly multi-allegiance by nature. See also "Thranduil Thralls"
  • Elvenking, The: That's right, that's how it's supposed to be written
  • Facemelt: That thing Thranduil does in T&T
  • Fanart: Popular post subject/title. Beacon for Thralls, as sure as moths dive into flames. See also "Pretty!"
(Helpful reference for the threadlard inspired: See the "IMAGES" section of "The TA (very) Quickie Help/TIPS for adding IMAGES and POSTING" sections in
this README FOR ALL TA Posters)
  • FEAST: Shorthand for Flustered Elrond AND Sassy Thranduil. In honour of Thranduil sass/badassery resulting in Elrond raising his eyebrows disapprovingly. May involve dramatic Elrond temple-rubbing. Elrond's fluster can be induced remotely or by proxy and does not require Elrond to be present when Thranduil does his thang. See also "FLAST", "FEASTING"
  • FEASTING: Shorthand for Flustered Elrond AND Sassy Thranduil Including Not-impressed Galadriel. Extension of FEAST, which includes Galadriel, also in disapproval mode, i.e. Elrond's fluster conditions in FEAST apply here for both Elrond and Galadriel
  • FLAST: Shorthand for Flustered Leggy AND Sassy Thranduil. In honour of the worship for badass (maybe a smidgeon of oblivious in there somewhere) Thranduil and his actions/non-actions resulting in Legolas getting into a flap. Requires Legolas to be present when Thranduil does his thang. See also "FEAST"
  • GotG: Guardians of the Galaxy. That movie in August 2014 with LP in it
  • HCF: Halt and Catch Fire. LP's 2014 TV series.
  • High Thud Risk (aka HTR): Alert for Pretty! hoarding thralls, invoked when 'EI' ain't cutting it. See also "Pretty!"
  • LA/LAEM: The Last Alliance of Elves and Men, not the city in the States
  • Lee Pace: Thranduil
  • Leggy: affectionate diminutive of Legolas
  • Legolas: Son of Thranduil, aka surfer Elf of LotR
  • LP: Lee Pace
  • Maximum Fabulosity Exposure (aka MFE): Thranduil's complete magnificence when riding Bubba the War-Elk. See also "Bubba"
  • Ninja-Hugger: Specifically LP dispensing hugs. Not that he hugs ninjas, but because he's sneaky like a ninja when he hugs people in the TH Vlogs and appendices and it takes everyone forever to realize it was even him, usually because he's back to camera when he bounces into frame. Will the sneaky hugging never end? We hope not! See also "BTS Easter Egg Find", "Unexpected Flash of Elf"
  • Oropher: Father of Thranduil
  • Orry/Oro: affectionate diminutive of Oropher
  • PD: Pushing Daisies. LP's 2007/2008 TV series
  • Pretty!: Surely self-explanatory? See also "Woodland Weekend", "High Thud Risk"
  • Silent Thread Visitor (aka STV): Self-explanatory, also known as Silent Thread Reader. STVs, Thranduil has a question for you. What say you? Smile
  • T&T: The Thranduil and Thorin confrontation scene in DOS. Generally ranked top favourite of Thranduil Thralls
  • TA: Thranduil Appreciation. All-round Heart for the Elvenking and his onscreen avatar (and by extension teh actor. See also LP). Shockingly, there are TA posts with that literary bent associated with thinking individuals frequenting such an exemplary forum as TORn. Some even hint at functional brain-matter in the poster.
  • That disagreeable (among other things) Dwarf: See "T&T"
  • Theory of Bling: Overarching term for theories and speculation on the backstories of Thranduil's rings. Popular discussion circa TAIII/TAIV, but still pops up occasionally.
  • Thranddy: affectionateHeart diminutive of the Elvenking's name (if you don't know who is the Elvenking, google is your mellon)
  • Thrandfully: The right manner on how to express your thankfulness to all Thranduil-related and non-related subjects.
  • Thranduil Thralls: The afflicted. Fangirls, and boys, whose allegiance are pledged to the Elvenking. Also known as the hopelessly enthralled to his ELVEN MAGNIFICENCE. Perturbing to some, Thralldom may not be exclusive. Credit goes to Eowyn of Penns Woods for the "official" Thranduil Thrall moniker. See also "Equal Opportunistic Thrall"
  • Threadlock: The inevitable fate of all TA threads exceeding 200 replies, aka mundane Chore of Mod. See also "Thread tipping"
  • Thread tipping: Post(s) that sends the current TA thread over the 200 replies threshold See also "Threadlock".
(See the "AVOIDING GENERIC POST-DEATH" and "AVOIDING POST- DEATH FROM THREADLOCK" sections in
this README FOR ALL TA Posters).
  • TW: Thrall Wars. An ongoing(?) bit of silliness in the Fan Art board ribbing everything in and about the Thralldoms of Thranduil and that disagreeable (among other things) Dwarf (see "T&T"). Here be the headtrickle of this bright little snarklestream to nowhere
  • Unexpected Flash of Elf (aka UFE): Those moments in the TH BTS, Vlogs when Thranduil/LP flashes by. See also "BTS Easter Egg Find", "Ninja-Hugger"
  • Woodland Weekend (aka WW): Occasional mega URL laden post for Pretty! of Thranduil, and LP. May also include goodness for Legolas, *cough*That disagreeable (among other things) Dwarf*cough* and some others. Selective indiscrimination is key. See also "Pretty!", "High Thud Risk"

NOTE: Please read the "IMPORTANT README for TA posters: Information on posting, and adding images"

    Keeping track of the appreciation
Caught off-guard at how much you've missed? 1 simple click will ensure you won't miss another update again. Put this thread on watch! Locate the "Watch thread" button to the top and right of this post (button 3 of the 5 threads buttons you see) and click it.

Also, if you click on the "creation" bit in the "Age" column (last one) when you view a forum, it changes to "activity", and you get a list of threads which has been recently posted to, instead of when they were started. It's a much easier way to find the current TA thread since someone will probably post in it, and it usually appears on page 1 of the activity view. Certainly beats going back through the board to look for it.

Re Legolas in Ithilien [In reply to]

    In Reply To
Gotta wonder how it all works. And there's the Dwarven connection too right? Would Gimli be a regular visitor in the settlement or do they keep up their friendship via letters like pen pals?

Well I guess writing would be a lot faster since they both have their realms to run. I guess they wouldn't have much time for any surprise visits. Still think the Aragorn/Legolas connection would be more frequent in actual contact due to close proximity of Ithilien - Gondor. What do you think?

Hmmm... seems like Gimli also settled nearby [In reply to]

Found this bit in the LotR Appendices:

    Quote
After the fall of Sauron, Gimli brought south a part of the Dwarf-folk of Erebor, and he became Lord of the Glittering Caves. He and his people did great works in Gondor and Rohan. For Minas Tirith they forged gates of mithril and steel to replace those broken by the Witch-king. Legolas his friend also brought south Elves out of Greenwood, and they dwelt in Ithilien, and it became once again the fairest country in all the westlands.

Well, as near as the Aglarond can be called near to Ithilien Tongue

I wouldn't mind visiting either actually.

Seen this in the library before. But here's a clear scan of the page on Thranduil.

Hmm I could've sworn I read this passage before, only it concerned Thingol instead of Thranduil (did they mix that up somehow?? or did I?)

The Elves claim that the Dwarves were so overcome by avarice at the sight of such treasure that they stole it. But the Dwarves tell another story: that Thrr took only what was due to him because Thranduil refused to pay them the agreed price, and so they kept the jewels as recompense.

But I haven't read the Silm yet (but I did recieve my new EN copy yesterday!) so the Silm readers would know if this is true or not.

FEAST... of a different sort [In reply to]

    Flustered ELVES and Sassy Thrandy

    Quote

To his men, Thranduil appeared calm and collected. Even with the enemy barreling down on them, the legions of the Elven King took solace in the borderline bored expression on their leaders face. If Thranduil did not see these screaming savages as a threat, why should they? Little did they realize, their King was so calm because of the cocktail of party drugs coursing through his body. His generals had told him there was a kegger on the other side of the enemy line, and nothing stood in the way of Thranduil in search of the ultimate soire.
PARTY HARD!" he roared, kicking his tricked out stag into the fray.

I think he looks amazing in DOS (just like FabDadHeart) and I'm sure he will kill it in BOFA as well.

Clicky at own risk (HTR alert!) He looks so good when not overly photoshopped. Hope they won't have too much work done to Thranduil for I too like him best 'au naturel' (as far as that goes with all the hair and makeup Smile)

(I for one love his eyes in DOS. I know there's been a lot of discussion about it but to me they stand out in such a good way. That dangerous intensity make him seem all the more the 'dangerous Wood Elf' he must be in TH).

Slightly different from the one we already know:

Nothing ground-breaking I know. Could even be considered slighly obsessive to find such minimal changes in a year-old pic. But hey what can I say, need to do something with my time. Would like that promotional material though Heart (and it's still way better than current bofa poster)

Here and there, the digital facelift is over the top - it makes him look a bit plastic. A few touches is all OB would need in even the worst of action poses.

It took me some time to get used to the eyes (they were often so dark in LotR), but now I think they fit better with TH. The 'dangerous' feel of this Elven environment does make the Tiffany Blue eyes feel right. Tongue

I didn't look up the distances (even with the Maps of Middle-earth close at hand Evil) But yes, it is nearer, to quote Gandalf, "As the Nazgul flies." But Aglarond is under those three peaks, and with the whole Ered Nimrais between them, I wonder if it's all that convenient for Legolas and Gimli to have dinner with each other. I would hope the Eagles started some sort of Fedex service or Gandalf lose/give up his exclusive rights to mothmail for the greater good (maybe he franchises it?) Tongue so that it's not difficult for them to "Heyo" each other at least.

Here and there, the digital facelift is over the top - it makes him look a bit plastic. A few touches is all OB would need in even the worst of action poses.

Agreed. I still don't entirely understand why they had to do the massive photoshop-thingy throughout TH series. Though I do think some might not consider the natural ageing to be a reason for Legolas' slightly different appearance from LotR to TH. Fact is OB has aged throughout the years (very well I might add) and he looks imo more mature than in the LotR series. So it's not all photoshop's fault and I'm guessing they made heaps of improvement with the makeup as well. They can work magic with it. I'm sure they already could 10 years ago but surely it has been improved through the course of time. Don't you think this also could be a reason for some of the 'plastic' looking skin? But yeah still think they also did way too much photoshop to the guy -I mean Elf-.

No matter, he still looks hot Heart (I'm liking his not-so-photoshopped-look in this pic)

With all the gathering of Elven eyes Pretty!

I thought Legolas' eyes were pretty bright in the LotR at times as well

    Clicky

But in DOS they seem to have lighten them a few shades more

HTR-alert clicky's due to massive size

And I agree with you that Thranduil's (light) shade suits him so well, does not look unnatural at all.
Light eyed Leggy looks far more dangerous and scary to me. I mean, wouldn't you be scared if you saw him looking at you like this:

So in that regard I think TH team did a good job portraying more of his 'unstable Laugh' Woodelf-side.

I think it depends on the light.. [In reply to]

And I can't believe I've found the link, but here are the closeups that make me think so: Lee Pace Daily.

They're actually a tiny bit blue, a tiny bit green, a tiny bit brown, a tiny bit grey, and the amount would change with how the light hits them and how much the light (or some other substance Tongue ) is dilating them. Sometimes that is called "green," but I see it called "hazel" more often. (Or maybe I'm biased, Mr Vanima has hazel eyes. Smile) And my guess is, it's much easier to disguise them "blue" with contacts than it is with Orlando's "brown" ones. (But I really have no idea.)

Thranduil's poster tomorrow!! [In reply to]

It looks like we're getting Thranduil's character poster tomorrow. Excited? ShockedShockedShocked I know I am!

What do you think? Will they manage to make it as awesome as this pic, capture the full maximum fab exposure of Thranduil? Or are you dreading it will be a let-down, like Leggy's?

Probably more dark and gritty, if the previous posters are an indicator.

Either way, only 19 more hours until we find out Angelic

         I'm torn... [In reply to]

Because my first reaction to your example is No! That one's plastic! In part because of a comparison set posted by Rowan Greene back in TA thread II:

This popped up for Shortcut, (because I'm not sure the image will show up, even though I can see it in the preview - it's the 2000/2013 pic towards the bottom of the page) but this is Rowan Greene's quote (and pics?):

    Quote
Because when you see him in the vlogs or random behind the scenes pictures, he looks more like the LoTR Legolas/Orlando--he looks normal. So what was with all the eyeliner and CGI distortions?

    I miss the LoTR Legolas.

But that 2013 image above (and the image in the post I'm responding to) looks very similar to the one in your very next post, and that one doesn't look uncanny valley to me. So I guess it's kinda like that definition of Science Fiction: Science Fiction is what I'm pointing at when I say "science fiction." My Plastic/UncannyValley must be a few clicks out of synch with yours - but we both know it's a problem that could easily be fixed with just a little less CGI-ing of the facial features. Crazy

(Looking at that "image in the very next post" again, I'm thinking the difference in coloring and lighting might have pulled it out of Uncanny Valley for me. And that's still probably down to CGI...)

Oh, well spotted! Or should I say heard?

Thnx! I also like this trailer music we get to hear in the official DOS UK trailer.
Everytime I hear this music, it reminds me of Thranduil's grand intro in the trailer "I offer you my help" "How do we know he won't betray us?" *close up of Thranduil's beautiful, ageless and mysterious eyes* "We don't."
I just forget the fact these last two remarks are about Bard and not Thranduil. The trailer makes it seem they are about him though so I just go with that.

Thanks. I can get that they want to make Leggy more dangerous [In reply to]

to suit the narrative they seem to want to put him through re bridging with LotR. But very often they seem to overdo it and actually succeed in making him look like a CGI character... really uncanny valley vibe. (Don't get me started on those really CGI streetfighter Leggy frames in that brawl with BolgMad )

In stills he doesn't look so bad, but in the movie, there were moments that I was taken out of. I found myself getting into a mental game looking for the Leggy CGI momentsCrazy

In LotR, his eyes may look a bit strange due to the disagreement between light-coloured contacts and bright lighting, but still, to me, they looked better than the CGI moments in DOSEvil

So in that regard I think TH team did a good job portraying more of his 'unstable Laugh' Woodelf-side.

Well, they're succeeding resoundingly if that's what they were trying for. Though I can't imagine the Elvenking being happy with what has been wrought in the petty name of moving a movie's narrativeCrazy

And my guess is, it's much easier to disguise them "blue" with contacts than it is with Orlando's "brown" ones.

It's true! My eyes are dark *duh* and I have tried light contacts on, once. The effect was totally *BLEH* so I can imagine the work to get OB's eyes blue enough during the LotR eyes just with contacts. Curse of the dark-eyed really. Around these parts, there's any number of ladies, and some men, who love wearing coloured-contacts (easily available over-the-counter for non-prescription ones): grey, blue, purple, green and some funky in-betweens. Chinese, Indian, Thai, whatever Asian race you care to name. But honestly, outside of cosplays and costumey events, it's quite the creepy because dark eyes get that glassy-eyed zombie feel and you can tell it's totally fake. And that's most of us really, as if that's not obviousTongue But, having said that, there are some lovely exceptions, chiefly in some of the North Indian folks (light brown, grey, or green being more likely than blue), tribal minorities here and there, and some the far west Asian nations.

Thanks for that link! I was trying to find it but no luckEvil Yay, vanima!

Hazel sounds lovely. Our late great Teddy the great white cat had the same thing going for him. I wished I had known he was hazel-eyed.

I think so! Not that there's a meme that I can see. But well, there's a few hilarious Thranduil meets Loki stuff I've come across. Memory isn't great now, but I think a bit of it may have been in earlier WWs, but let's just say for the most part, it ain't to our taste Evil

In stills he doesn't look so bad, but in the movie, there were moments that I was taken out of. I found myself getting into a mental game looking for the Leggy CGI momentsCrazy

But not only with Leggy. Though the very worst part of the CGI madness came right at the end, where they had Legolas riding off on a CGI horse (for God's sake!!! Arrrrghhhh!!! Why? WHY?????) to follow Bolg out of Laketown.

Not liking the Bolg/Azog CGI characters either. I'm not saying I hate them but IMO they could've been better had they been RL actors. And did anyone notice when we see Azog in DG walking up to have his conversation with Sauron, his footsteps don't match with the sound they make, as if there's a little delay in between the time they actually hit the floor and the moment where you hear the sound. Might be just a couple of miliseconds off, but I'm a bit sensitive when it comes to minor details like that. Plus in the Leggy-Bolg fight I got the same feeling as you, a bit annoyed whenever CGI Leggy took over RL Legolas. I can't help myself but notice these sort of things Crazy

Yes Thranduil does come off as somewhat of a badass/vilian. I can see why ppl with little knowledge of the Tolkien universe would think Thranduil not being the 'good guy'. And let's face it, he isn't entirely the good guy either. At least certainly not when we meet him in DOS. Like LP said himself (I don't know his exact words) Thranduil is a very dangerous Elf. You step into Mirkwood and good chance you'll die.

It's like Brian Singer's Superman Returns... the poster-child of abject results from overly CGI'd scenes *bleh* But I rank the CGI streetfighter Leggy right up there with it.

I hadn't paid attention to be honest, because the pair's so CGI'd I get taken out of the scene. Their motion, everything. Why bother getting actors if they're going to CGI their characters so much they look like they're in some incidental animation short? Much preferred what we got to see of the concept art and also the shots of the prosthetics Bolg before they ditched him.

.... *deep breath* for balance and thread relevanceAngelicLaugh

That's why he's so alluring!Heart He's really not like other Elves the audience has come to expect, like what LotR has impressed on them, chiefly Elrond and Galadriel. He is like no other Elf. Darkly fey and dangerously beautifulHeartAngelic

Really big HTR Alert [In reply to]

Just to emphasize the gorgeousness of LP's eyes, here's a really big, zoomable pic of him on a red carpet somewhere. Cool

He eyes are definitely hazel, not too much unlike mine actually!Angelic I don't think my eyes have any green, but I've got grey-ish blue with brown at the center and like LP's they look a little different depending on the lighting and what I'm wearing.

Anyways, I agree that it's probably easier to make hazel eyes blue with contacts than it is to try to change brown eyes. I really have no idea either though. I've never worn contacts.

Anyway, that closeup got me thinking about that stone inside his circlet again. Don't you think that stone/gem looks quite a lot like one of them white gems in the prologue of AUJ?

Of course I can't be too sure, but it does appear to have the same colour/texture as the white gems 'of pure starlight'. I'm very curious to see if we ever get an explanation about his circlet gem as in what kind of stone it is and where it stands for.

         worst CGI [In reply to]

    Quote

But not only with Leggy. Though the very worst part of the CGI madness came right at the end, where they had Legolas riding off on a CGI horse (for God's sake!!! Arrrrghhhh!!! Why? WHY?????) to follow Bolg out of Laketown.

Agreed. Most of the time, CGI anything doesn't bother me much, but that horse was some of the worst CGI I've seen in awhile. I think Leggy himself may have been CGI in that shot too. IMO, the only Leggy scene that looked almost as bad, if not worse is the scene where the elf guard at the gate tells him that Tauriel left and didn't come back. I can't figure out what they did exactly, but his face looks really weird in that whole segment. Like, they had an bad camera angle or something and it always throws me off.

If you ever feel the need to watch that scene, please notice if you see/hear the same. Maybe it's just me?

Gotta love that Celeborn/Sindar/Thranduil blog still [In reply to]

Where the author explains the Sindar behaviour so well, how Elves like Thranduil and Celeborn are so different from the friendly, helpful Elves we got to know so well. Ah I'm preaching to the choir here, you know what I'm talking about Smile

     Edit:

I think this is a slightly photoshopped piccie of Leggy (check out the eyes).
I know I shouldn't be liking it, but I do Blush What can I say? I just so love this picture and basically the entire scene in Mirkwood when he's first introduced. No matter what they'll do, I will forever love this picture of Leggy Heart Plus looks like he's got the exact same eye color as his fab Dad in this piccie *squee*

I was looking at that blue guy on the bottom bunk wondering who it was supposed to be. For some reason I don't automatically put GotG in the "Marvel Comics" category. (Maybe because I was completely unaware of the existence of the comic until I saw advertising for the movie version. Everything that came before it I had at least a basic familiarity with.)

Now that I know who it is,.. I don't think he'd bother with the shorts. Wink (But Loki probably is that fussy.)

And that gif set is hilarious, but it so weird trying to imagine that other guy as Thorin. Tongue

Me too! It's not like we suffer in the midst of plenty like the Thorin fans, so yes, appreciating the treat but disappointed at the execution CrazyUnimpressed

And I'm not a fan of the zombie-pallor either, though I think Thorin actually suffers more in this shade than Thranddy doesSmile
