Fanart: Dark-haired Elvenking... or maybe Oropher? [In reply to]

The artist, evankart who did this beautiful Thranduil fanart, named this "An elf lord of Noldor." But I can see traces of Thranduil, if he bothered with braids, or maybe his daddy when young in the FA?

I can help [In reply to]

30 cm per foot and 2.5 cm/inch Smile

So if Lee Pace is 6 foot 5 inches (12 inches per foot), that means he's 192.5 cm tall, or 1.925 m Cool

I, on the other hand, am only 5 cm shorter than Thorin (listed as 5 foot 2 inches) and I am 1.5 m (so Thorin would be 1.55 m, I think).

Lee Pace would absolutely tower over me! If I gave him a hug, I bet my ear would be right next to his belly button! Tongue

But that should hopefully give you an indication of how tall Thorin and Thranduil are at least Smile

VValar has probably found her answer by now, but to clarify [In reply to]

1 inch is actually 2.54cm. Google confirms, and has helpfully provided a converter. So a foot is 30.48cm, not 30cm.

192.5cm is only 6' 3.5". At 6' 5", LP should be 195.6cm, and probably would have his height rounded up to 196cm or 1.96m since he's said to be over 6' 5". Here we use both systems, depending on what's the object of measurement, so a bit of precision need to be applied and I'm a stickler for it.

Anyway. here's a fun interactive graphic height comparison tool based on the old info of LP being 6' 3".

My $0.02: I think he was just on his way to do a state visit, though the huge number of armoured Elves with him might mean he intended to persuade the Dwarves to hand over the White Gems by show of might. I don't think he intended any aggression. Definitely he didn't plan to be there when Smaug arrived, and therefore was not prepared for battle anyway. Even if he had intended on some military action (really not likely, given his propensity to not get involved anyway, and frankly, any Elven military action under Thranduil's command would prolly be a cakewalk victory, it's the aftermath that's the messy bit) he would have withdrawn his troops
anyway upon knowing Smaug's already there, because he would not risk his people's lives unnecessarily for the forgone conclusion of Smaug's desolation. Especially not after the Dwarves' treachery of not handing over the White Gems. In a nutshell, no he didn't plan anything. Just a matter of coincidence, really just movie-maker (lazy?) shorthand for setting up the T&T scene.

     Welcome! [In reply to]

A convenient quick rule of thumb: 6' is about 1.83m, 5' 10" is about 1.78m, 5' even is a little less than 1.53m. For quick rough conversions, the rest is just adding, subtracting from these ballparks though the headache when you get further away is that 0.04cm on top of the 2.5cm for every inch, because it looks small but as you probably know, it's the cummulative effect.

Argh, december seems to be the answer to a lot of questions these days Mad
I told a friend of mine the other day that I just could not die before december, for I just HAVE to see BofFA first. She just looked at me strangely, but I know you Hobbit/ HeartThranduil fans know what I'm talking about. It would be an absolute tragedy if I didn't get some answers to my questions and watch a whole lot of Pretty! first.

That is an interesting theory, although Thranduil doesn't come over as a grabby, greedy, wanting the white gems back asap- kind of Elf to me. Do you think he would rally up his army just to put terror and fright into the hearts of the Stubborn Little Folk? That would be silly, everyone knows when Thranduil gets angry, he doesn't need an army to do the fighting for him Heart. Just one look upon the fair but upset and ridiculously gorgeous being would be enough cause for even the bravest of warrior to drop down their sword and run away as fast as their (short) legs can carry them. Thranduil is just fearsome like that Heart But lol re you stating the aftermath would be messy. Indeed it would, terrible cleanup. I don't think he really intended on being at Erebor at the moment of attack either. That would mean he had some sort of precognition that Smaug would attack Erebor, otherwise it would be quite a coincidence for him arriving at the exact moment Smaug does. I think the film makes messed up the timeline a bit. But still, wouldn't he wear SOME form of armour when travelling behind the safe borders of his Kingdom?

That's way too much calculation for me, I found Cirachala's explanation a lot simpeler lol. Even though I might skip a few inches here and there when measuring 30 cm per foot and 2.5 cm/inch, I'm sure I can live with that Angelic But I know you're right, it really should be done properly. So yeey for the weird, and somewhat creepy (when you think about it) website where you can compare your own height to that of LP. Just add two more inches, or 5,08 cm (see what I did there, I do listen to other ppls wisdome at times Cool) and you know just how big the box must be that I'm sure everyone is getting right now.
