is that it's Thorin's proximity to the One via Bilbo that exacerbated/caused the dragon sickness 
The 7 dwarf rings failed in that the bearers weren't able to be taken under dominion with Sauron, but they increased the natural gold lust that dwarves were already inclined to.
So if the 7 lesser dwarf rings could increase gold lust, and the One corrupts even those who are near the bearer, then why would Thorin be an exception to it? He was near the One from the Misty Mountains all the way to Erebor, then was surrounded by gold. Seems to me that the One is as good of an explanation as any (also keeps to the idea of Thror possessing the last of the 7, then Thrain going mad after HE had the last of the 7, which was finally taken from him in Dol Guldur).
In fact, the proximity to the One seems to me to be the best explanation for Thorin's gold sickness we have yet (well, that and the traditional idea of a dragon hoard having an inherent addictive quality to it present in many fantasy works). It could also explain his redemption too- when he exiled Bilbo, he was no longer in the presence of the ring, and thus its effects wore off him just in time for the battle
I feel that the reason the Arkenstone specifically set him off is because his personal value of it was beyond even that of gold- and the One knows hearts' desires and promises the bearers that (this is in line with the books, where the One tempts Samwise in the way of a garden that could rival none other). So if Thorin's heart's desire was the Arkenstone, and that was what he valued above all else deep down, the One would likely bring that particular desire to the forefront.
Add dwarf legacy and natural affinity toward shiny things, as well as hatred of elves, and you've got a serious case of dragon sickness/gold lust stemming from that ring

My wife asked me about Thranduil's offset fighting style, based partially upon this thread. In part, due to her encouragement, and my love of studying sword fighting, I will share a little of what I know. Please, don't take this as expert opinion, but rather some things that I have learned.
First of all, the off hand reverse grip is becoming such a cliche in fiction that only the fact that it is an Elf doing it am I willing to give it a pass. Being a Star Wars fan as well, the reverse grip was used in Clone Wars by Anakin, Ahsoka, and in various video games and the like.
However, there are some practical reasons for using the reverse grip, though more so with a single bladed sword than a lightsaber ;)
First of all, the sword will serve in place of the shield, as the off hand (non-dominant) would normally hold a shield. Instead, having the blade reversed prevents cutting oneself if using the blade to parry an attack. The unsharpended side would rest against the forearm, and provide some protection in blocking blows.
Second of all, the fight stance is suited towards quick combat, which seems to be both Thranduil's and Legolas' style. In essence, every move is a strike, and reminds me of Eastern martial arts, which often moves from block-attack, block-attack, in one motion. For instance, a quick martial arts move, for me, is to have my left arm extended and right drawn back. I would block with my left and immediately attack with my right. There is no hesitation and the move must be quick to effective.
In a similar vein, Thranduil could block, parry the blow and immediately attack, block and attack again. It would be a very cyclic style of fighting, involving quick, one-two moves.
It also has the benefit of being very active, and a style that requires a lot of movement, but can deal with attacks from multiple sides.
I am looking forward to seeing it fully in action!

Thranduil of course has BEST HAIR OF MIDDLE-EARTH, even though misguided others with poor eyesight and high night-vision impairment can't SEE  But that's all right. We KNOW the truth 
  
Why do Thranduil and Legolas seem to differ (moviewise) in hair colour? LP and Peter Swords King have said Thranduil's hair is ash-blond, platinum blond etc. Particularly Peter King who have said the idea is to distinguish Thranduil, even from Legolas. I can't find the quotes though, sorry.
But book-wise...
In general, the Vanyar were golden-haired, and other Elves (including the Noldor, Sindar, and Avari) had dark (brown) or even black hair, although some of the Teleri, including Celeborn, had silver hair (.....) Additionally, a silver hair colour existed in the royal houses of the Sindar, with Thingol, Círdan and Celeborn all described as having silver hair.
Seeing Thranduil is Teleri, and there is no record of Teleri Elves having golden hair, it would seem that he is related to the royal house of the Sindar for he indeed does share the same trait of having silver hair. Yup. Good point too!. Though "although some of the Teleri, including Celeborn, had silver hair" + "Additionally, a silver hair colour existed in the royal houses of the Sindar, with Thingol, Círdan and Celeborn all described as having silver hair" are good enough explanation for me to accept Thranduil's silvery crowning glory We're on the same page And thanks so much for the reading rec. re Legolas. Well, imo I would guess he would inherit from daddy, but there are some who think the idea of Legolas having golden hair is just misinterpretation.

Happy you liked these - I loved the other longer art I tripped over as well, but I really want to get my hands on a larger version. Those originals tho seem to lead to a website in an Eastern European language and not sure yet how to go farther .
But at least the "autumn" image and others are all accessible on Deviant Art (not that artists don't deserve to be paid for their work - and I will if I like the piece enough and *cough* can afford it )

Thanks for your reply on the question of the haircolour.
Interesting theory about Thranduil being a chameleon in his surroundings. It's true that his haircolour seems to change from scene to scene. I hadn't linked it to the clothes he wears at the moment, great movie find!
And here in the snow, white and silver – both the silver of snow glimmer and of armour, with the blueness of cold climate carried through in his garment. Oh yes, and he looks sooooooo cute in them What gem do you mean?
But I like this. I do note they didn’t think along those lines for Celeborn’s look though. I believe his hair IIRC was light brown or honey blonde.

That is one seriously interesting blog post you linked to! I’ve had to speed-read a little while at work, but am bookmarking it for more intense study later. I particularly like the brief analysis of Thranduil’s name, and the meaning of “kindred” in the text.

I feel like a kid in the candystore today, with several people all sharing their wonderful theory's about our Elf king
I'm not a Star Wars fan, so this type of fighting seemed new and pretty bad-ass to me. I had fun reading your informative analysis. The part of the reverse grip makes much sense, as well as the fight stance. So basically you're saying dude's a total killing machine?

He has such amazing hair. And of course much more silkier, smooth and ever-glowing than the curly, scruffy hair of his Dwarven companion.
Even the hair department at TH can't stop touching it.
And you're welcome for the article I found your link very interesting as well. I still root for the 'blond team' of Legolas. I think it gives him just that little bit extra. Plus I like the fact that he resembles much of his father this way.

But sure the 'shrooms and the starvation diet help with delusional thinking. Thankfully, tho, my beloved dwarves were able to beat a hasty retreat out of the back door before they starved to death on rabbit food, with the added bonus of seeing a wet Thorin thrown in gratis.
Note the lush, sumptuous twilight mane, not to mention all the other ASSETS *THUD*. So I suppose, after all, there IS a reason to be thankful to Thranduil.
