Not my fault tho, 'coz I have acute/chronic virulent THORINITISHeart. Most of the time it's only a real problem if someone talks while Thorin is speaking or gets between me and a monitor or screen during a Thorin (and now Thranduil) scene, because I've been told my eyes glow red and my head spins around 180 degrees.

I had doctors and medication and stuff, but after sending me to the National Institute of Health for study, it was determined that I was a hopeless case and it was better to send me home and not further waste taxpayer dollars. Particularly with the arrival on scene of the Elven King, which unfortunately produced a SYNERGIC EFFECT.WinkAngelicCrazy

     I'll admit [In reply to]

I've occasionally strayed over to the dwarf side, and I do appreciate Thorin's #majestic-ness. I especially like that part in DOS when the dwarves are rowing the boat across the lake to get to Erebor and they get that lovely close-up shot of Thorin with his hair blowing in the wind. Very nice!Cool

Quote
RA has been described as easy-going, and PJ had commented on RA being this "unassuming guy" but that he would completely change as Thorin. That he even walked differently. And RA said during the filming that "Thorin was never far away" and he even would have dreams AS Thorin.

Now THAT is what I call commitment to your role! IIRC, in that blog post done by the extremely excited Make-A-Wish girl, she said that even she got a Thorin glare just before someone told RA who she was. Then she said something like, his expression turned from "Orcs must die!" to "Puppies, rainbows, and tea parties, yay!" Lol! He's such a sweet guy!Angelic

Quote
Which is actually why I have my fingers crossed for more Thranduil. Re the now-famous Misty Mountains, RA has said they didn't know how good it would be, in the end. And I think there's no way to know how compelling Thranduil would be, how charismatic, or how compelling Thorin/Thranduil are, until you film it. But PJ knows NOW, so I am hoping he tweaks things so there is LOTS of Thranduil time.Unsure

I agree, there is no longer any excuse for PJ not to know how much people love Thrandy, but I'm not too worried. The fact that we got those great Thranduil shots in the BotFA teaser is promising, IMO and I think the DOS EE is sounding hopeful too. We also can't forget that there will be a BotFA EE as well.

Quote
LOL RA has a legion of expanding fans - the "Armitage Army" and one of the reasons he is so well thought of is everything you have described. Another thing that impresses me is that evidently he has been supporting a few favorite charities from quite early on in his acting career. I'm even impressed he has lately opted to move to the U.S. for a while, and of course RA is a WELCOME addition to our melting pot.CoolTongue

Yep, if RA wants to move here to the U.S. he's more than welcome to do so.Angelic I only have one requirement: He must come visit Virginia and take a nice long drive around the mountains and the horse country and the historical areas in Richmond, and then he has to tell the other Hobbit actors how pretty it is so they'll come here too.Cool I promise I won't drool on them.Wink

OK tho - I know that's not a joking situation, and I am glad that RA was able to bring this girl some happiness! That's one thing musicians and actors can do at times like no one else, and it means the world to the families too I am sure. Thank you for posting that, I had not read that before.

I think it's great (on the TA threads anyway) that all seem to appreciate the beauty of each other's favorites, and what all these actors bring to the table. And work to be fair about their opinions too. One of the things I like about that scene is Bilbo right at Thorin's back - at this stage to me with those two, it just feels right, and I often think how far those two have come with their relationship *sob*. I've always found it very touching that this little hobbit managed to reach through the bitterness and anger of Thorin with such a selfless, but "hobbity" act of courage.HeartHeartHeart

I'm feeling cautiously hopeful about Thranduil-time as if PJ sticks to the book a fair amount, there are key scenes that Thranduil HAS to be part of. You make a good point about Thranduil being highlighted in the teaser, and I am sure that got a rousing response. SOMEONE is tracking the online chatter I am sure - if I made movies I would be!

Oh, definitely. I'm familiar with the region and I already picture RA at the Kennedy Center or in Baltimore - maybe Boston? doing "The Crucible"!!!! And RA doesn't sound like a foodie, but he needs to enjoy U.S. regional cuisine from the lobsters of Maine to the Maryland blue crabs to southern soul food and barbecue to the salmon from the West and so on...
Can you imagine? I think Orlando Bloom lives in NY at least part of the time, and RA lives there and they are friends - running into them at a restaurant? Guess in New York it is uncoolCool to notice celebrities but how could you NOT.HeartHeartHeartTongue

Hi Willow! some image posting info! [In reply to]

Don't worry about being new to posting, I wrote some stuff about posting images in this earlier "Favorite costume" thread on the Hobbit board because someone else had exactly the same interest:

http://newboards.theonering.net/..._latest_reply;so=ASC

But all the info is in the TORn image guide at:
http://www.amagpiesnest.com/a/torn/PostingImages/

And if TORn member Kim is around, she can point you to her excellent instructions as well.

It took me months and months before I tried posting an image, so my tips:
1) Watch the size guidelines from the guide, and there's lots of online image resizers that can bring an image down to TORn requirements - Photoshop and Gimp can scale down images too during a save or export - Photoshop has the great "save for web" feature; with Gimp just click advanced options during the export to tweak the size.

2) Posting to TORn to me is kind of a 2-step process once the image is small enough. You need to UPLOAD the image first. And then INSERT into your post.

Let us know if these links don't work for you or for more info!Evil

Hey VValar can I ask you a question? [In reply to]

Re:

and truthfully can't wait for Thorin to completely lose it in the BotFA. That will be an interesting sight, I'm looking forward of RA's portrayal of 'mad' Thorin. We already got a sneak peek of that in the teaser.

I was wondering if you would mind saying why just because I'm curious - a lot of people seem to be looking forward to that, but I am not sure why tho I am as human as anyone and there is some terrible fascination with the great becoming a train wreak (which we see all too often). Or maybe you already didUnsure - it's interesting. Terrible to see, but interesting. But plz just say "because" if you like *grins*.Cool

Tho for me I'm less with the madness - (tho it will be completely heartbreaking) - RA mentioned in an early interview - or alluded to - Thorin becoming "physically violent" with Bilbo which as far as I know happens in the book. So for me there's kind of an awful fascination thinking of that, especially with the quality of these two actors. And while of course I know why Bilbo does what he does (in the films) I can see what a horrific betrayal that would be from Thorin's perspective.

ON THE OTHER HAND I'm already wondering if it will be all that dark, really. E.g. considerably watered down from what we might imagine. For one thing, Thror was still functioning and even leading a charge in battle, so maybe dragon sickness doesn't make you that far gone. And also PJ *sigh* may either dilute things on purpose or *sigh* PJ from time to time seems to go through SOME scenes in DOS at full speed, so there's barely time to feel the importance or it feels jarring.Mad

Not ALL the time, but re a few scenes in DOS think PJ needed to take his foot off the gas a bit.Unsure

LOL I am terrible, because in the teaser - it happens so fast you can barely tell - but the "I will have war" when Thorin's teeth are bared and his eyes are blazing with contempt and to me a kind of mania - it's terrible. But IMO beautiful, too. That looked incredible on a big screen.HeartHeartHeartHeartHeart

Poor Kili! And Fili as well, not just the end, but watching their innocence and fun die. The WETA C & D book has a passage where Aidan Turner talks about Kili not being the same after Tauriel heals him.
He get healed, but something is gone from Kili after that. I suppose the same kind of thing happened to Thorin.Frown

Hello, VValar
Nice to meet you! Smile
I'm not sure my sister will read through all the posts, however, I'm hoping she'll warm up to him once she's seen BOTFA.

Er, unfortunately, I don't know what you use re- posting pictures because it seems to have given me the broken link symbol? :/

Any interaction between Thranduil and Legolas is fine by me! Legolas reporting to Thranduil or Thranduil seeking his son, either one. :)
Though, Mirkwood is fairly close to Lake-Town, isn't it? Would they be able to hear Smaug's attack from there? They would be able to see it, surely? I mean, in DOS Tauriel and Legolas were looking at Lake-Town after the Barrel Escape...does this mean other Elves could witness the attack from the borders of Mirkwood and report to Thranduil (including that Legolas and Tauriel are missing)? Or does Legolas report after the attack? He and Tauriel were standing with the refugees in the Teaser...Either way, I wonder how angry Thranduil will be as he ordered the borders closed and the watch doubled "No one enters this kingdom...and no one leaves it". Can you imagine the tension? Especially once he hears that his son and Captain of the Guard have both defied his order? Then again, them defying his order may be exactly what it takes to help him realize that the events unfolding cannot be ignored...? Oh, the possibilities!

I mean, in DOS Legolas and Tauriel were looking out at Lake-Town after the Barrel escape...is it possible the Elves see the attack from the borders of Mirkwood and report to Thranduil (including that Legolas and Tauriel are missing)? Ooooh, thank you Avandel and Kim for the info!

I found a pic of Thranduil online and tried following the instructions. I had to resize it. I'll try adding it to this post. I apologize if this pic has been posted before- I found it on DeviantArt (and saved it on my computer so I could resize it). Is it ok to post pics from there, or do we copy and paste the link of the page we found the picture on? Sorry, I have read the rules but I'm still a bit confused...

Ok, I tried several times to attach the pic, but I'm having trouble when it comes to inserting the pic (most of the time the box that lets me insert it into the post doesn't appear). I guess it could be my computer playing up. I might try again later...

P.S. I realized I somehow accidentally double-posted my last post (I thought it didn't work because the page wasn't loading properly). I tried deleting it but can't because it's been over ten minutes- is there a way to delete the second post?

I'm soooo sorry about all the questions!

     Hi Willow353 [In reply to]

Here are some simplified steps for posting once you've got the image re-sized. If you're posting someone else's fanart, I usually post the photo and the link to page they have it posted on. Lurker knows how to make the actual photo clickable, so maybe she'll chime in here. It sounds like you may need to check your pop up blocker if you're not getting the insert window. As for deleting the accidental second post, you can just post a new thread on the Feedback forum and ask the forum admins to delete it. Hope this helps, always happy to answer questions. Smile

Once you have the photo re-sized:

  1. Open your post and click on the Browse button next to Attachment on the bottom of the page
  2. Select your photo saved on your computer
  3. Check the box next to Inline
  4. Click Upload attachment
  5. This will refresh your screen
  6. You'll see the photo attached at the bottom of the page
  7. Within the body of the post, hit the space bar a few times and highlight the blank spaces **this is the trick I missed the first couple of attempts**
  8. Click on the photo image icon in the editing bar
  9. In the pop up window, click Inline image
  10. Click the radio button next to the name of your image, then click Submit
  11. This will insert the photo

Note: these steps are in Magpie's instructions, and I think you need to be in Advanced Editor to see all the buttons - I think Basic Editor requires you to enter code.

New Zealand would be the best bet if I were to head anywhere - it's only three hours away and my entire family live there. Nope, I'll just have to throw myself into work. I suspect work will rise up to meet me anyway.Crazy

The TA (very) Quickie Help/TIPS for adding IMAGES and POSTING [In reply to]

So I'm looking in and saw Willow's SOS on images and double-post, and Avandel and Kim's helpful tips for her. I'm collating all their helpful tips here for anyone needing a quick(?) start.

  • The TORn FAQ on the "Welcome To TORn" forum is a great start for all questions actually, from making a post, adding Pretty! to asking for post edit and MUCH MUCH more.
    • First, check the editor mode you're on when posting, Basic or Advanced. Ref 2.8 Replying to posts seems slower than on the old boards. Can I speed it up?
    • Specifically for image posting, ref 2.20 How do I add a picture to a post? and 2.21 How do I upload an attachment? Also, read 2.22 How do I add a link to a post? (NOTE: It's a lot easier to use Advanced Editor unless you're familiar with HTML and webpage coding. Then Markup Help is your friend. See also 2.9 How can I get markup help?)
    • For help with post edit/deletion, ref 2.24 Oops! I made a mistake in my post … can I fix it? and 2.25 Why can’t I edit and/or delete my post?

That's the longcut. If you want a shortcut on how to post images, do as Kim sez in her post. If you want to get fancy on the Pretty! check out Avandel's post with information on software and options for image manipulation. Avandel's post also has information on TORn's guidelines about image size and so on. Still, it's recommended that you're on Advanced Editor mode to help doing any of these things less painful.

As for what Kim mentioned about making an image
clickable, it's easy - basically it's the same process as making text a clickable link. As you would with making clickable text in your post, you need to have an image you can select in your post. So:
  1. Get your image onto your post
  2. Select/highlight the image. Make sure you're selecting the right thing.
  3. Click on the "Link" icon on the edit bar, and paste the url of the image in the pop up window, then click Submit
  4. Viola!Smile

One last thing: The void is your friend. Kim mentioned in her post one important trick is to hit the space bar a few times before adding an image. I find this helps when using the other tools on the edit bar too. Specifically the "Quote" icon. Always be sure you have an <Enter> before AND after your quote. So basically you will hit <ENTER> 3 times, place your cursor on the middle <ENTER> line before you do a quotey. That way, you can add more stuff before and after your quote instead of having everything in a quote mosh.
Hope this helps for Willow and anyone else who wants to threadlard Sly

PS: Posting and adding images/links
can be daunting at first, (and I considers meself good with getting tech stuff). But isn't everything? So hang in there and just try again if the first try didn't work.

A few thots... before I get back to you-know-what [In reply to]

I think the actors and crews have been great! It seems like they're not just you know, humouring the visitors on the set. That particular account was so enjoyable to read. And much respect to LP for really taking the time to spend with her though she didn't expect to see him and was really there for RA and OB as they're her fav char and first celeb crush respectively (IIRC). Of course RA and OB were also great, but reading her account, I just thought LP was really the classy standout. Also, in one of the SDCC vids of LP and CB back in TAVIII, he also mentioned the visitors.

Yup! And it's been fun (for me) the gentle ribbing of the characters we do and the laughs we get out of it Tongue

That image is nice. Am reminded of the one with Thorin, Bilbo and Thranduil all sitting together thought-bubbling about their respective OCDs.

*fingers crossed* Well, we can hope until Dec either smacks us in the face or make us deliriously happyEvil

Virginia sounds lovely. At least the National Parks phots I saw. *drool* I think the best thing about living in a place like that is to just roadtrip! the heck out of the car. I would so do parkcrawls Evil

Isn't LP also living in NY/NYC? And now RA and OB too? Wow, wonder how many ME actors are residents or visit regularly. *wonders what it takes to uproot*

I'm a lurker. Fan of both books and movies; it seems I have severely misnamed myself... for the moment.

Thanks for the linkie, VValar [In reply to]

I'm going to save it for reading later. Though, OTOMH, I think Celeborn and Thranduil are at least acquaintances, both being Sindar and having lived in Doriath before it all went sideways. Dang, I need to get back on track with my Silm-read Evil

“We figured “The way the character is designed—he’s beautiful, he’s exquisite,” Pace says. ”He’s ethereal, but also unforgiving and cold, which we figured out before I even shot a scene. We would do the costume fittings and I would be like, ‘Yeah, he takes up a lot of space this guy. He belongs on a throne.’”

Not the exact quote, but close enough:

Quote
QUESTION: One last question: What was your reaction to when you first put on the ears, and the clothes, and the hairstyling? What did it feel like to look at yourself and see Thranduil?

LEE PACE: It was a little chilling, to be honest. I looked so different from myself. Obviously, I’m not going to play this Elvenking like me. No one wants to see that. But, yeah, it was very interesting. The way the character is designed—he’s beautiful, he’s exquisite. There’s something very ethereal about him. But also unforgiving and cold. We figured that out with the way he looks before I even shot a scene. We would do the costume fittings and I would be like, ‘Yeah, he takes up a lot of space this guy. He belongs on a throne.’
