Answer to your question, Avandel *Spoilers* [In reply to]

Hello Avandel,
Just flicking through the book, it seems Thranduil does warn Bilbo and tries to pursuade him to stay in the camp with the Elves. Here's part of the quote:

"...But I wonder if Thorin Oakenshield will see it so. I have more knowledge of dwarves in general than you have perhaps. I advise you to remain with us, and here you shall be honoured and thrice welcome." pg 315, chapter XVI 'A thief in the Night'
I hope that answers your question :)

I think I'm going to be in tears during the confronation between Thorin and Bilbo. I'll be taking boxes of tissues too!

Great question~ And putting on the nerding cap again =P [In reply to]

To me, this (thanks to Willow353 for putting the relevant bit up but here's the full paragraph) shows Thranduil isn't just the cold-hearted snooty, megalomaniac jerk with chronic treasure-envy of popular opinion.

The Elvenking looked at Bilbo with a new wonder. “Bilbo Baggins!” he said. “You are more worthy to wear the armour of elf-princes than many that have looked more comely in it. But I wonder if Thorin Oakenshield will see it so. I have more knowledge of dwarves in general than you have perhaps. I advise you to remain with us, and here you shall be honoured and thrice welcome.”

And following that:
Nothing they could say would stop him; so an escort was provided for him, and as he went both the king and Bard saluted him with honour.

Here is a powerful being showing concern to a "mere" hobbit, albeit one who delivered the game-changing advantage, giving honour where honour's due, and clearly being both empathetic and kind. HeartHeartHeart

I hope they don't take any of it away or botch this scene MadFrown

Of course if it's anything like last year when some of the press could not shut up - no REAL spoilers but that's partly because I isolated myself from the net. I want to be at the first sane-time showing here. Though I think they have a marathon for the trilogy. Maybe even the hexalogy... a cineplex did a trilogy run when RotK premiered. I didn't go because I prefer the EE Frown

thank the Valar for Martin Freeman [In reply to]

Thank you!Smile As Ms. Boyens points out in the Appendices, their vision of Bilbo is a difficult role to play, requiring both comedic and dramatic skills.

Quote

Nothing they could say would stop him; so an escort was provided for him, and as he went both the king and Bard saluted him with honour.

I am pleased that the original material paints a picture of Thranduil and Bard making a real effort to stop Bilbo (as I have mentioned before, Tolkien would have booted me from his classes from my 'tude and questions). As opposed to just waving goodby to Bilbo *cough* in that one of my Hobbit book complaints are not fleshing some things out more (tho I KNOW this was a book for children etc.)Unsure

This will be heartbreaking if the movie shows it the way I envision, e.g. the long lonely walk to Bard and Thranduil, and the even longer and lonely walk back, to *possible* death at the hands of a friend and king you just betrayed. FrownFrownFrown

Then again, my heart breaks for Thorin, who has a kind of loneliness and is maddened by then, and yet this is his Hobbit, who saved his life, plus dwarves put so much stock into loyalty. For Thorin to hear what Bilbo has done, I am not surprised if Thorin tries to kill Bilbo - tho it's unclear to me even after Bilbo has spent so much time with the dwarves if he understands the degree of what he does.Frown Thranduil certainly does, I think.Unsure

*Grins* probably best not to think about all the time I was supposed to be doing some boring chore, but got sidetracked by telling myself "oh, just a quick look at Thorin FB or Deviant Art."

Not my fault tho, 'coz I have acute/chronic virulent THORINITISHeart. Most of the time it's only a real problem if someone talks while Thorin is speaking or gets between me and a monitor or screen during a Thorin (and now Thranduil) scene, because I've been told my eyes glow red and my head spins around 180 degrees.

I had doctors and medication and stuff, but after sending me to the National Institute of Health for study, it was determined that I was a hopeless case and it was better to send me home and not further waste taxpayer dollars. Particularly with the arrival on scene of the Elven King, which unfortunately produced a SYNERGIC EFFECT.WinkAngelicCrazy

But Lurker and others have been quite kind about my illness, empathetic even. TongueWinkCool

Tho that is just another bummer that crossed my mind recently - not hearing Thorin & co. sing againFrown. *Gloomily* and as time goes on, frankly I'm realizing I'm not wild about either of the end songs so much - ESPECIALLY "I See Fire" - it's too modern, and blows the end tone of the movie completely for me. It's like I WAS in Middle Earth, all of a sudden I am at a coffee house.Mad

Don't know about the stand-alone quality of the song or not, but I always cut the BR off before that one starts. It's just not ME for me.Frown
