     Thranduil Appreciation Thread Part IX

Well! For a while there it seemed like Thranduil Appreciation Thread VIII would be the foreverthread and suddenly, threadlock! And now there are NINE.

Any and all appreciation of Thranduil and everything related to him happens here.
All Thranduil Thralls, and appreciating non-Thralls are welcome.Smile So feel free to jump in at any time!

(Gigantic, and clean, source file in this post in TAVIII.
Incidentally, that post is also the start of a discussion on Thranduil being in Dale.)

The Thranduil Appreciation thread count:

I (Originating thread and II by Rowan Greene)
II
III
IV
V
VI
VII
(Thread by Eruvandi)
VIII

Credit goes to Eowyn of Penns Woods for the "official" Thranduil Thrall moniker.

Thranduil Appreciation Lexicon
Tongue

  • Bubba: Nickname of Thranduil's beloved War-Elk
  • Equal Opportunistic Thrall: One who thralls whom her/his infidelity fancies. Shamelessly multi-allegiance by nature. See also "Thranduil Thralls"
  • Elvenking, The: That's right, that's how it's supposed to be written
  • Facemelt: That thing Thranduil does in T&T
  • Fanart: Popular post subject/title. Beacon for Thralls, as sure as moths dive into flames. See also "Pretty!"
  • GotG: Guardians of the Galaxy. That movie in August 2014 with LP in it
  • HCF: Halt and Catch Fire. LP's 2014 TV series.
  • LA: The Last Alliance of Elves and Men, not the city in the States
  • Lee Pace: Thranduil
  • Leggy: affectionate diminutive of Legolas
  • Legolas: Son of Thranduil, aka surfer Elf of LotR
  • LP: Lee Pace
  • Oropher: Father of Thranduil
  • Orry/Oro: affectionate diminutive of Oropher
  • PD: Pushing Daisies: LP's 2008/2009 TV series.
  • Peckish Thrall: Avandel's TA humour panels ala Peckish Owl (So this is new, sue me. I'm just pre-emptively perpetuating something that's an eventuality Angelic)
  • Pretty!: Surely self-explanatory? See also "Woodland Weekend"
  • T&T: The Thranduil and Thorin confrontation scene in DOS. Generally ranked top favourite of Thranduil Thralls
  • TA: Thranduil Appreciation. All-round Heart for the Elvenking and his onscreen avatar (and by extension teh actor. See also LP). Shockingly, there are TA posts with that literary bent associated with thinking individuals frequenting such an exemplary forum as TORn. Some even hint at functional brain-matter in the poster.
  • That disagreeable Dwarf: See "T&T"
  • Theory of Bling: Overarching term for theories and speculation on the backstories of Thranduil's rings. Popular discussion circa TAIII/TAIV, but still pops up occassionally.
  • Thranddy: affectionateHeart diminutive of the Elvenking's name (if you don't know his name, google is your mellon)
  • Thranduil Thralls: The afflicted. Fangirls, and boys, whose allegiance are pledged to the Elvenking. Also known as the hopelessly enthralled to his ELVEN MAGNIFICENCE. Perturbing to some, Thralldom may not be exclusive. See also "Equal Opportunistic Thrall"
  • Threadlock: The inevitable fate of all TA threads exceeding 200 posts, aka mundane Chore of Mod. See also "Thread tipping"
  • Thread tipping: Post(s) that sends the current TA thread over 200 postcount. See also "Threadlock"
  • TW: Thrall Wars. An ongoing bit of silliness in the Fan Art board ribbing everything in and about the Thralldoms of Thranduil and that disagreeable dwarf (see "T&T"). Only one thing is sure: nothing and no one is safe Evil Think of it as vicarious authorly pretensions in miniature ping-pong mode, usually between Avandel and yours truly... Morphing into a 3-player mahjong game with Kerewyn dipping her toes inHeart
  • Woodland Weekend: Occasional mega URL laden post for Pretty! of Thranduil, and LP. May also include goodness for Legolas and *cough*some others. Selective indiscrimination is key. See also "Pretty!"

Keeping track of the appreciation
Caught off-guard at how much you've missed? 1 simple click will ensure you won't miss another update again. Put this thread on watch! Locate the "Watch thread" button to the top and right of this post (button 3 of the 5 threads buttons you see) and click it.

Also, if you click on the "creation" bit in the "Age" column (last one) when you view a forum, it changes to "activity", and you get a list of threads which has been recently posted to, instead of when they were started. It's a much easier way to find the current TA thread since someone will probably post in it, and it usually appears on page 1 of the activity view. Certainly beats going back through the board to look for it.

Continuing on Bard's trailer scene.. [In reply to]

Thanks again Lurker! You should hence-forth also be known as Thread-Starter. Cool

I’m bringing forward Eruvandi’s post in the previous thread, about the trailer teaser scene with Bard and the Elven army.

http://newboards.theonering.net/...i?post=766384#766384

Quote
To me, all of this raises the question of why did the elves turn so that their army is parted down the middle like that? Well, that's where the theory that my aunt and I came up with comes in: I think the army is either making a path for Bard to walk down to meet Thranduil, or they are making a path for Thranduil to walk up to meet Bard. Since Thranduil is the Elvenking and Bard doesn't seem to know what's going on, I would say the later is more likely. After all, it fits Thranduil's style that his arrival in Dale with his army would have an element of pomp and circumstance.

and

In that, Thranduil wouldn't walk TO anyone . You walk TO him, and while I guess it might be polite to make a path for Bard, I also took it as an unspoken threat - the flawless synchronous turn, the thud of the bows. E.g., for any visitor, to try to attack or threaten Thranduil is a very bad mistake. Somehow this sounds like Thranduil.

I am kind of agreeing with both these thoughts, although they are conflicting. And have to admit my very first impression was that of an army paying tribute / saluting / making way for its leader (been watching too much Daenerys and her Unsullied) but that wouldn’t be the case here. (It’s possible I’m also recalling Haldir’s army matching on Helm’s Deep) Then, I did consider the idea, as we look over Bard’s head and along that path, that Thranduil would appear, maybe his first appearance. As said above though, it's not kingly that he walk through to meet Bard. Or will he? Perhaps he will ride through? That would be intimidating.

Could this scene be setting up 'spectacularly' for Thranduil’s first appearance in BotFA? I don’t want that, because I want to see him in Mirkwood first, making the decision to leave. It’s possible an early scene, if cut, could be reserved for the EE.

I hope to see him in Mirkwood making the big decision too, before we see the Elven army moving out in style. It would be too much of discontinuity to just have HIS MAGNIFICENCE pop up in Dale. And definitely, Thranduil walks to no one. Bard has to pay homage to him!HeartEvilTongue

LoL Card Carrying Thralls [In reply to]

So this came about because of Avandel OT'ing her own thread about the magnificence of Thranduil in BotFA and the imagery he evoked for her.

I made a quick card for her affliction earlier. Here's the improved one Tongue

(GIMP is still getting the better of me. I had cut the shape out and pasted it on a transparent background and it looked great in GIMP. But well, you can see it's still showing once exported as a JPG Crazy)

Bard and the elven army [In reply to]

Well, It's always hard to know what's going through those deliciously devious elvish minds, Smile but when I saw that trailer with the elves turning and making a path for Bard, I just assumed they were recognizing him as Girion's heir. A sort of elvish way of saying, "This is your hour, step up and take your rightful place". He does look confused and surprised, as though he never expected anyone to show him any particular respect in spite of his lineage.

Also, I hadn't thought about it before, but now I'm wondering if Thranduil is going to stick one of his perfectly manicured fingers into the Laketown - Dale politics, and see to it that Bard is restored to the Lordship of Dale, perhaps simply by recognizing Bard and ignoring the Master of Laketown? I wouldn't mind seeing Thranduil coolly pulling some political strings and carelessly swatting the Master down like an annoying mosquito. And he would do it very stylishly. Wink

And once again the world has not arranged itself just for me.

Eh, actually with his isolationism, I rather think recognition would not be something he's into anyway re Bard's lineage. Plus these are Elves, don't think it matters much to them.

IMO, there would be no point in them waiting that long to show Thranduil for the first time in BotFA. We need to see him make the decision to leave Mirkwood because going from "Other lands are not my concern" to stepping out the door and leaving his realm to get involved in the affairs of other people is a major turning point for him. This scene may be the first time we see him in armor though, which could explain why it's set up so dramatically.

Now that everyone's saying it, I agree that Bard will most likely have to walk down the path to Thranduil instead of the other way around. A king shouldn't have to walk up all those steps after all! Bard needs to come to him!Smile

Unlikely; this scene seems to take place at Erebor or the ruins of Dale. We should have a shot where the Elvenking first learns of Smaug's demise and decides to march for Erebor. Also, before Thranduil and his army reach the Lonely Mountain, he should hear about the plight of the survivors of Lake-town and divert to the Long Lake, which is where he and Bard should meet for the first time.

The Master is indeed an annoying mosquito compared to Thranduil's fabulousness! I look forward to the groveling that will no doubt ensue should the Master and Thranduil meet face to face.Evil I half wonder if Thranduil would even address the Master by this point in the story since Bard is clearly the more competent one here.

I can see it now: Thranduil arrives in all his magnificence and we see the Master almost tripping over himself to do the obligatory brown-nosing. Meanwhile, Thranduil just gives him a condescending look, says something along the lines of, "Ok, who's REALLY in charge around here?" and then only acknowledges Bard's opinions from that moment on.      With pleasure, and some trepidation... [In reply to]

I have finally joined the sillyness and posted my own Thrall Wars response, as promised many weeks ago to Avandel and Lurker. It is here, "hidden" below Thrall Wars pt 3, but also relevant to it, as an off-shoot story:

Thrall Wars III: An Unexpected Flashback

Enjoy. Smile

Meanwhile, I am very much enjoying that image of Thranduil in petals. Some people are SO talented! They've got his face just perfect. If this is 'spring Thranduil' though, I would like to see a spring crown.

     Yes! [In reply to]

Also the snobbery, hauteur, elaborate wardrobe, and his staff/walking stick thingy (instead of Lucius's trademark cane/wand).

A lot of superficial similarities there. Though the not being a servant of a DarK Lord is an important difference. Wink

Since we mentioned the written frame-by-frame trailer analysis in the last thread [In reply to]

I thought I'd linky link to the live, 1hour and 36minute long frame-by-frame that they did on TORn Tuesday this week. The actual analysis starts at about 16:00 and of course, there's commentary on Thranduil. Justin even seems to have a bit of a guy-crush on Thrandy, LOL, and I just about died laughing when he said that Leggy's horrified expression in the clip just after the part where we see Thrandy fighting is because he's thinking, "I'll never be as fabulous as my dad!" Thranduil fan or not, I really don't. It never even crossed my mind.

For a host of reasons, an actor w. height, elegant profile, youth, different voice, and frankly charisma.

Lucius - *shrug*. Whereas Thranduil immediately brought to mind stories of the Tuatha de Danaan, the wild hunt, nature gods and the like, Lucius just reminds me of a crow, really, black robe, kind of snotty - but it could be anybody w. longer pale blonde hair.

To me, re the HP villains it's Helena BC that knocked it out of the park. And Alan Rickman was awesome as usual.

Thanks for this, Eruvandi! It's a very nice frame-by-frame, and the two guys are hilarious. Though I'm just slightly disappointed there's not more talk about weapons (you know what I mean... Thanks for weighing in, Avandel! So well-said. Frankly, people really just need to get out of the rut. I am rather tired of the Lucius Malfoy angle just cos of the long blond hair.

Fair disclosure: I am no Harry Potter fan, neither book nor movie. but I have seen the movies just cos they're so omnipresent and always rerunning on the channels here. At no point in time did I ever get any sense of similarity nor resemblance, plus I have seen quite enough trawling in the Wilds.

Oh Eruvandi, Terrible Thranduilitis Twinses mine [In reply to]

... remember that conversation about warped sense of aesthetic appreciation (or lack thereof) in our respective familial units re Thranduil?

Well, now, riddle me this... are these not images, and thematically similar ones at that, of the same MAGNIFICENT being?

Huh? Huh?

Huh?

Cos... like I changed my wallpaper to the BotFA still last week, and since my mum expressed her *ahem*misguided opinion when I had put up the vlog one initially, I didn't bother asking her what she thought of it. So just now, my sister told me, our mum had GUSHED, G.U.S.H.E.D. when she first saw my wallpaper. And so my sis reminded her of her *ahem*former protest at the vlog image.

Guess her reaction? She laughed it off as a different pic and insisted this is a hottie CrazyCrazyCrazyCrazyCrazyCrazyCrazyCrazy

I did wonder at the sense of quietly lighting up I've been getting from her when my wallpaper's in view. Tongue

I just LOVE my mum

She is not a fantasy fan per se since language is quite the barrier for her but she is quite the splatter-gore and physical comedy fan Smile We like to project movies on the TV for her rather than bring her to the cineplex since she'd have questions and we'd have to explain stuff.      Not fan art - was from the DOS Annual! [In reply to]

There was a whole thread on these possibly spoilery kid products from last year - I remember that, the "activity book" actually said Thorin threw the the key away!Mad

And you can still buy at Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/...tion+of+Smaug+annual

That is a FABULOUS image of Thorin, TOO BAD Bard's ARM dominates the whole thing - I forgot how much I like this artwork of Thorin. Then there was this image:

Which is in the Annual book - I bought the Annual and the activity book as they had way cool art for kid books, that also got used on games and calenders and the like. That's why I am wondering if we will start seeing stuff like this for BOFA - kiddie stuff but the art rocks.
Except for the SPOILERS. Tho maybe re the leaks last year, PJ and WB clamped down on the book and calender companies? "Here kids, guess what, you are gonna feel real lousy!FrownFrownFrownFrownFrown"

ANYWAY forgot how much I liked that image. Gotta 'shop or Gimp Bard's ARM out of there tho.FrownFrownFrown

UT - Just a few more little tidbits I would like to post. [In reply to]

All were taken from somewhere in UT:

After the end of the War of the Ring, Thranduil and Celeborn renamed Mirkwood once more, calling it Eryn Lasgallen, the Wood of the Greenleaves.

... her hair (Galadriel's) was held a marvel unmatched. ... Feanor beheld her hair with wonder and delight. He begged three times for a tress, but Galadriel would not give him even one hair ... they were unfriends for ever.

... and he told us the whole strange story; how he came to arrange the journey to Erebor, why he thought of Bilbo, and how he persuaded the proud Thorin Oakenshield to take him into his company.

"Listen to me, Durin's Folk" I cried. "If you persuade this Hobbit to join you, you will succeed. If you do not, you will fail. If you refuse even to try, then I have finished with you. You will get no more advice or help from me until the Shadow falls on you!" Thorin turned and looked at me in astonishment. ...

"What a name," said Fili, and laughed. "He thinks it very respectable," I said "and it fits well enough; for he is a middle-aged bachelor, and getting a bit flabby and fat. Food is perhaps at present his main interest." ... at least you will be well entertained!"

Treebeard translated the word Lorien as Dreamflower.

Please, call me Ve.

Of course I can't speak for LurkerAngelic but I suspect of course that's it case of "protesting too much" Wink while Thorin's dark bittersweet cocoa symphonic voice and searing azure eyes wind themselves into her soul. Yet there is SO MUCH competition for Thorin's attention and so many have staked claims already, including the worldwide growing-alarmingly-fast Armitage Army.Shocked

So she seeketh comfort with the silver ice Elven King, and she was doin' OK for a bit, after that Thrandy Image came out and the teaser, and there were some SDCC interviews - but well, yah know, it's never enoughFrown. So you gotta let her have some slack, because no-one was expecting our incomparable and wholly gawdlike Mountain King to show up on a book cover in completely EPIC GOLD ARMOUR lookin' so fine - it's almost, but not quite, as scorching as the famous chocolate leather stamp image. And then the sumptuousness of the EE clip. HeartHeartHeartHeartHeart

*Cough* not to mention the Thorin Thralls that inevitably, (and on the thinnest pretexts, and frequently w. no pretext at all), who manage to elegantly enrich her threads with dwarf culture. Personally while I admire her determination, it would be easier on her to just embrace the dark side. Plus the food is way better than the rabbit greens and stuff the elves eat.Wink

That's correct. But remember, Mirkwood Elves are Silvan Elves. They're part of the Elf-clan who rejected the call to go to Valinor, so they are doomed to fade in ME. Thranduil, however, is a Sindarin prince, and Sindars missed that cruise-trip only because of Thingol's misguided priorities. Tongue Can't remember the right of it, but Sindars should be able to choose to go on that trip rather than fade in ME. Legolas took the trip with Gimli in FA so I don't see why Thranduil can't.

However, book-verse doesn't say Thranduil actually does or not. I do think he does, ultimately, after all his Woodland Realm subjects have faded or to a point where there's no need for an Elvenking in the Wood. And I think so because (apologies: this following bit is just based on memory since I can't afford too big a distraction away from *cough*writing now) after Sauron's attacks on Mirkwood and Lothlorien during the War of the Ring were successfully repealed, Thranduil met with Celeborn in Mirkwood, carved up the forest as it was, with the south and middle ceded to become South Lothlorien and a realm for Men respectively. Only the northern part he retained was what he renamed Eryn Lasgalen. I can't see Thranduil being willing to cede anything if he intended to stay on in ME until the very end. Obviously the attacks decimated the Elves' numbers as well, and so he prudently retained only what he could comfortably rule and control. Plus, with all his known family members either dead or sailed West, I believe he would want to reunite with them ultimately. So, however long is needed to keep the realm of Eryn Lasgalen going for his Silvan subjects, Thranduil is there, and then he also bid his final goodbye to ME.UnsureEvil

     Interesting point [In reply to]

I hadn't thought about it before, but you're right. Thranduil is the only LOTR or TH elf that I can think of who does absolutely nothing to his hair. No braids, no tie-backs, nothing. I am going through every elf I can think of and even the background elves do something.

Quote
ThranduilHeart has no braids, ThranduilHeart needs no braids.EvilHeartAngelicTongue

Indeed.Smile

Speaking of hair, I was just thinking how, of all the characters who appear in both LOTR and TH, IMO, Elrond is the only one who got a hair makeover, isn't he? Gandalf, Galadriel, Saruman, Legolas, and even Bilbo all have basically the same hair styles as they did in LOTR, but Elrond's hair actually got toned down a bit.

In LOTR, his hair changed just about every time we saw him, and it was usually done in a fairly complex style. In fact, in the appendices of ROTK, they said at one point that his hair almost got too complex at one point. They actually had this ridiculous looking hairstyle for him for the Aragorn/Arwen reuniting scene where his hair was in these rings all over his head. And I don't mean rings like a girl might have ringlets or curls in her hair. Oh no, I mean his hair was shaped into large, circular, sticking out from the sides and top of his head, reminds you of onion rings, RINGS. I don't remember if they said why in Middle-earth they had even considered that style, but thankfully they changed it to what ended up in the movie.

Pardon my rambling. My point is, in TH, Elrond's hair is much simpler. It's still pulled back and the side thingies are braided but there aren't all the loops and curls and *shudder* rings, like in LOTR. IMO, simpler is better because it compliments Hugo Weaving's face better.

Honestly, I've wondered what was up with all of Elrond's hair changes in LOTR, anyway. Was it the equivalent of an elven mid-life crisis?Tongue Maybe Thranduil could have given him a lesson or two in aging and styling one's hair gracefully.Angelic

That reminds me...

Bonus question: Who is older, Thranduil or Elrond? They were both in TA, but that's about all I know.

Yes, they actually made the wig, put it on Hugo Weaving's head and FILMED IT. Seriously, they show the footage of him wearing it in the appendices. Oh...my...goodness. I truly can't believe they let it get that far. If I was the costume designer, I would have laughed that thing off the sound stage! Crazy

I've tried desperately to find a pic or find the video on Youtube, but alas, my search has been in vain as I don't remember what the title of that section of the appendices was.Unimpressed

Finally back to Thranduil in Dale [In reply to]

It's just stuck in my head, after thinking about it, and the fact that those gems have obviously been on Thranduil's mind for a while, that however Thranduil gets involved in the fray, and why he ISN'T with Legolas w. the Laketown refugees, that the bold and fearless Thranduil would be among the first to be thinking to get to Erebor, believing the dwarves are dead, and wanting to be the first one there BECAUSE HE WANTS HIS GEMS BACK. Plus, he's familiar with Erebor, w. a long relationship with these dwarves I am gonna guess Thranduil knows the layout, pretty much, from state dinners and whatnot.

So Thranduil is going to Erebor by the main road, the way he always has through Dale - or maybe, perhaps, there is a hint that a few dwarves survived, possibly, from Bard or Legolas - so Thranduil KNOWS his former captives were there. Maybe it's even Tauriel who warns Fili & co. they need to get out of Laketown, because she knows one way or the other Thranduil will be roused after Smaug's attack.

This is assuming Thranduil knows Legolas is alive, and they have had contact with each other - possibly even Legolas is the one who brings the news, tho since Legolas is heading to Dol Guldur at the moment - but I gotta assume he turns back for Tauriel when he either sees or hears Smaug. I know it's dark but it's hard to miss a flaming creature that's as big as two airplanes, and I can't think Legolas wouldn't turn back for Tauriel.

Only thing I can see wrong with my theory is who are these dead people? Perhaps after Laketown burnt they headed for Dale for shelter, as those buildings were stone, even if ruined. Or maybe they were going to try for some gold. And possibly Thranduil is actually tracking Fili and the surviving dwarves. And would he even know who Fili is? - but since he was willing to imprison Thorin, maybe that doesn't matter, or thinks he can just dominate some friendless heir.

Sigh - all so tantalizing, but LOL love the fact (of course) that these orcs easily slaughtered some helpless villagers, but bet trying to attack Thranduil was a surprise. As is watching your head roll across the cobbles.

*shudder* think of dignity!!! [In reply to]

Re the WETA books I noticed re costumes (and of course I love this) that they were always careful of Thorin's dignity, even in the Laketown rags. He's not a "comedy" character like Ori is to some extent. So one would think with ELROND it would all be about good taste.

But don't kill yourself trying to find the image - I gotta get the LOTR on Blu-Ray still, and now I am going to wait until the "super collection" comes out - because I am sure there will be one. It will be fascinating to go through the LOTR Appendices which I haven't seen - not sure why - wasn't until a few years ago I started getting an interest in the behind the scenes stuff, really. But appreciate the mention - and it IS often dull going through videos looking for one specific shot you know is there!Unsure

LOL if I were an actor, I would not want to be a pain to work with, but I might say something if my costume made me want to laugh or made me think of the Olympics or something.Cool

This one - just NICE!

Lots of color.....

Nice I think:

Just thought this one was interesting. What was the artist thinking? Does Thranduil just hate his wine, or is something more ominous going on? *Ponders*

Here's where I get in trouble, and anyway I don't usually like overly-sentimental stuff - but yah know, Thranduil had to be married or involved at SOME point, so I thought this was kind of nice tho evidently it's connected w. someone's fan fiction:

And there's this one - yeah, I know, there's an arrow. But I thought it was nice if grim, and anyway the arrow can be Gimped or 'shopped out. I am just posting this because it reminded me of our fellow TORn poster talking about Oropher, so maybe this is Thranduil comforting someone after a battle. Tho the more I think of it, why would he run around with an arrow - kind of awkward. So why would this assumed she-elf be in a gown on a battlefield? Er....I mean if I followed someone to battle I'd be like Eowyn or Tauriel, weapons-readyUnsure

Hello VValer, nice to hear from you, and that you are enjoying the Thralling madness. Wink

Re the fan art with the arrow. I have seen this before, and the scene that sprang to mind for me is a surprise attack, and that Thranduil has swiftly made a human Elven shield of himself to protect his unarmed Elf lady. It’s not a mortal wound, but he is casting his eyes backward to see where his attacker is at. Any moment now, that sword may swing round…

Re the onion rings hair pic. Yes. Yes I see what you mean. It looks very… ceremonial.

actually the Silvan elves are Teleri as well, according to the Silmarillion [In reply to]

because the Avari, or Unwilling, refused to leave Cuvienen, which is VERY, VERY far to the east- so far, that it's not even on the ME map.

The first part of the journey lost some Teleri to the vales of the Anduin, because they were too afraid to cross the Misty Mountains. The Silvan elves of Lothlorien and Mirkwood are descended from this group. The rest crossed the mountains and then Ered Luin and came into Beleriand, where they became Sindarin elves (and the Noldor and Vanyar continued on to Valinor, with some of the Noldor returning in the Feanorian Rebelliion to ME later).

So Thranduil's people actually CAN leave Middle-earth for Valinor, should they choose to do so. Whether they did or not remains a mystery, but they do have that choice Smile

Agreed. Thranduil definitely would want those gems back anyway he could without undue risk. I'll say again, even though ad nausem, that even without the gems in play, Thranduil would go treasure-hauling as soon as the news got out anyway. Even if he had absolutely no treasure-envy. It just makes sense given the geopolitical situation. Leave all that valuables which is essentially money and therefore power for someone else to cart home? Na-ah, no thinking leader would risk that. Better the hoard be at his disposal than another's.

You know, I posited on a thread I started a while back about how the Elves start the journey, and I was thinking they'd be a bit stealthy to avoid drawing attention. But now, especially with your projected route, i think there's no need for that much caution. Everyone would know and be heading there anyway. So Thranduil would go by the most direct route as you said.

Those dead bodies are interesting. And since Thranduil was never described as being in Dale itself, it's an open field for PJ and crew.

Thank you dear Heart
As well as Lurker in the MirkHeart, EruvandiHeart for the kind welcome. And all the others who already roam in this thread, for not kicking me out just yet.
Oeee happy picture of Thranduil, always a pleasure - or should I shout Squee!!!
Maybe we'll see some other silent lurkers introduce themselves in the future?

And o my, Elrond's hairdo looks horrendous, what exactly were they thinking?
Thanks for the photo nonetheless, now I will forever remember the famous onionrings that graced our lord Elronds head (luckily only briefly).

LOVE the fanart with the arrow by the way. It's inspired by a fanfic, but I haven't read it (the link is on the deviantpage of the artist: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9964619/1/Skin-Deep) so I don't know the background story here. But don't you think he looks so *handsome* and *mighty* while protecting this Elf lady? *sigh*

Oh and since our beloved King seemingly knows how to throw a party, I saw this fanart and pictured Thorin walking through the Halls of Mirkwood (let's leave out the fact that he probably wouldn't be walking there on his own, something to do with dungeons and all, oh well), and come across this sign. A rather passive aggressive stance against the Dwarves Wink

And MORE 'coz I am PROCRASTINATING - elves, dwarves and ME stuff [In reply to]

So I could use some help re my fuzzy hobbit memories - so this artist made this cool illustration for the "Dwarven Song of Winter" but is this Tolkien work?

This set of illustrations is for a song from The Hobbit:

The wind was on the withered heath,
but in the forest stirred no leaf:
there shadows lay by night and day,
and dark things silent crept beneath.
The wind came down from mountains cold,
and like a tide it roared and rolled;
the branches groaned, the forest moaned,
and leaves were laid upon the mould.
The wind went on from West to East;
all movement in the forest ceased,
but shrill and harsh across the marsh
its whistling voices were released.
The grasses hissed, their tassles bent,
the reeds were rattling -- on it went
o'er shaken pool under the heavens cool
where racing clouds were torn and rent.
It passed the lonely Mountain bare
and swept above the dragon's lair:
there black and dark lay boulders stark
and flying smoke was in the air.
It left the world and took its flight
over the wide seas of the night,
The moon set sail upon the gale,
and stars were fanned to leaping light.

This one is so large and detailed here is the original link: http://vigshane.deviantart.com/...-of-Winter-450063849

So - unfortunately - maybe humanity in general has some sort of fascination with the dark side. And certainly *cough* there seems to be some *unholy* interest in Thorin's madness and I've seen some images I won't post, but makes me wonder is that the kind of thing you put on your wall, or what (and so far it seems that Peter Jackson is wisely using some TASTEFUL restraint).

But as far as depictions of Thorin's tortured soul go, I thought this was well done and an interesting treatment:

And I just liked this:

But wolfanita has done this lovely but sad image of Thor telling Dis and Frerin tales after the fall of Erebor ("I dreamt of Erebor"):

LOL this a Thranduil appreciation thread, so haven't forgotten about him!

Makes a lot more sense than being on the BATTLEFIELD in a long dress, and makes even more sense thinking of the wilds where Thranduil lives. An animal or orc attack could come at any time.Shocked And I can completely see the swift Thranduil stepping in to shield his lady, who was probably simply gathering herbs or out for an evening walk.

I think you are right - normally these "shadow hunters" probably wouldn't just blow down the main road. And perhaps they don't in the movie, either, as Beorn did say these lands are crawling with orcs, and orcs had followed the dwarves right up to Thranduil's palace - and by now, even tho the WETA books describe these orcs as more of a "hunter orc" - they seem to be thinner than the LOTR orcs, more like wolves or hyenas - can't think that the elves wouldn't spot signs and tracks of their passing in the forest.

Of course if it's anything like last year when some of the press could not shut up - no REAL spoilers but that's partly because I isolated myself from the net.      I have a question re the Hobbit book re Thranduil *spoiler* [In reply to]

Which I don't WANT to read right now, because as I have posted before I know LOTR so well it kind of messed up my enjoyment of the film.

But every now and then things come up I am curious - about, e.g. I am pretty sure re my fuzzy memories of the Hobbit Thorin is about to throw Bilbo off a wall.

Anyway, in the book does Thranduil warn Bilbo not to return to the dwarves e.b. thinking if that is true I am going to need a whole box of tissues just for Bilbo going back, knowing Thorin and probably more will turn on him at best *sob* Bilbo still seemed to trust Thorin at the end of DOS, and now he really will be risking his life as Thorin will be losing it + utter betrayal from Thorin's perspective.

Thanx for any answers!

Answer to your question, Avandel *Spoilers* [In reply to]

Hello Avandel,
Just flicking through the book, it seems Thranduil does warn Bilbo and tries to pursuade him to stay in the camp with the Elves. Here's part of the quote:

"...But I wonder if Thorin Oakenshield will see it so. I have more knowledge of dwarves in general than you have perhaps. I advise you to remain with us, and here you shall be honoured and thrice welcome." pg 315, chapter XVI 'A thief in the Night'
I hope that answers your question :)

I think I'm going to be in tears during the confronation between Thorin and Bilbo. I'll be taking boxes of tissues too!

Great question~ And putting on the nerding cap again =P [In reply to]

To me, this (thanks to Willow353 for putting the relevant bit up but here's the full paragraph) shows Thranduil isn't just the cold-hearted snooty, megalomaniac jerk with chronic treasure-envy of popular opinion.

The Elvenking looked at Bilbo with a new wonder. “Bilbo Baggins!” he said. “You are more worthy to wear the armour of elf-princes than many that have looked more comely in it. But I wonder if Thorin Oakenshield will see it so. I have more knowledge of dwarves in general than you have perhaps. I advise you to remain with us, and here you shall be honoured and thrice welcome.”

And following that:
Nothing they could say would stop him; so an escort was provided for him, and as he went both the king and Bard saluted him with honour.

Here is a powerful being showing concern to a "mere" hobbit, albeit one who delivered the game-changing advantage, giving honour where honour's due, and clearly being both empathetic and kind. HeartHeartHeart

I hope they don't take any of it away or botch this scene MadFrown

Of course if it's anything like last year when some of the press could not shut up - no REAL spoilers but that's partly because I isolated myself from the net. The Fandango guy went on and on about the barrel scene until I just cut the sound - terrible narrator, doesn't know when to dial it down.Mad

I want to be at the first sane-time showing here. Though I think they have a marathon for the trilogy. Maybe even the hexalogy... a cineplex did a trilogy run when RotK premiered. I didn't go because I prefer the EE Frown

*sigh* I think I will be in hiding in the lead-up to the premiere also. I do hate to spoil myself for any movie, but I don't know if I can stay away this time Crazy

thank the Valar for Martin Freeman [In reply to]

Thank you!Smile As Ms. Boyens points out in the Appendices, their vision of Bilbo is a difficult role to play, requiring both comedic and dramatic skills.

Quote

Nothing they could say would stop him; so an escort was provided for him, and as he went both the king and Bard saluted him with honour.

I am pleased that the original material paints a picture of Thranduil and Bard making a real effort to stop Bilbo (as I have mentioned before, Tolkien would have booted me from his classes from my 'tude and questions). As opposed to just waving goodby to Bilbo *cough* in that one of my Hobbit book complaints are not fleshing some things out more (tho I KNOW this was a book for children etc.)Unsure

This will be heartbreaking if the movie shows it the way I envision, e.g. the long lonely walk to Bard and Thranduil, and the even longer and lonely walk back, to *possible* death at the hands of a friend and king you just betrayed. FrownFrownFrown

Then again, my heart breaks for Thorin, who has a kind of loneliness and is maddened by then, and yet this is his Hobbit, who saved his life, plus dwarves put so much stock into loyalty. For Thorin to hear what Bilbo has done, I am not surprised if Thorin tries to kill Bilbo - tho it's unclear to me even after Bilbo has spent so much time with the dwarves if he understands the degree of what he does.Frown Thranduil certainly does, I think.Unsure

*Grins* probably best not to think about all the time I was supposed to be doing some boring chore, but got sidetracked by telling myself "oh, just a quick look at Thorin FB or Deviant Art."

Not my fault tho, 'coz I have acute/chronic virulent THORINITISHeart. Most of the time it's only a real problem if someone talks while Thorin is speaking or gets between me and a monitor or screen during a Thorin (and now Thranduil) scene, because I've been told my eyes glow red and my head spins around 180 degrees.

I had doctors and medication and stuff, but after sending me to the National Institute of Health for study, it was determined that I was a hopeless case and it was better to send me home and not further waste taxpayer dollars. Particularly with the arrival on scene of the Elven King, which unfortunately produced a SYNERGIC EFFECT.WinkAngelicCrazy

Don't know about the stand-alone quality of the song or not, but I always cut the BR off before that one starts. It's just not ME for me.Frown

Hadn't seen them just yet. Too bad discussion seems already over in the 2nd thread. Love to read more background stories about Thranduil/Oropher or Elves in general.
Speaking of which, I found an amazing blog discussing the possibilty whether Tranduil and Celeborn are related. The author really digs deep into Tolkien literature and comes with plausible explanations and/or assumptions why they would be considered relatives.      Thanks VValar! NEED the UNDERSTANDING *grins* [In reply to]

Because LOL medical science is baffled Wink. But considering even poor Richard Armitage can't even go to promote his current film without the audience calling out "Thorin" and the press sneaks in BOFA/Thorin questions when they are supposed to be asking about other projects, I feel completely comfortable in my besottedness. Coz evidently a lot of other folks feel exactly the same way.Cool

Just like a lot of other folks are fascinated as I am with these TWO kings, and are constantly throwing them together (I mean in a psychological sense, not the icky stuff!!!Shocked). And it IS fascinating - both GORGEOUS (I'm running out of superlatives) and both with not dissimilar experiences, but so far apart.

Thorin, to me anyway, is just, just, - well, the first time I ever saw PJ's vision, it was jaw-dropping. As someone else posted once, "absurdly masculine." And someone else (wish I had said this) at his best, "Thorin is a complex, wildly charismatic figure..." That was before DOS, because I'd also describe Thranduil that way as well. Tho annoyingly so far as we all know on this thread, there has NOT been enough Thranduil and the EE and BOFA need to make up for that, big time.Mad

I do think Kili and Fili are stunning in their own right - but, well, Thorin ripped my heart out and then Thranduil came along. These two are MEN *cough* so to speak.Wink And it's lovely that the Thranduil Thralls are empathetic, because I'm going to be a sobbing, hysterical wreck clinging pathetically to Thranduil's robes, and Thranduil will have to change me into a bird or something - a thrush? - so I can stay with my king forever *sob*WinkWinkCool Maybe a statue like that Greek myth that cries forever *grins*.Wink Or maybe Thranduil could just hook me up with some of those Mirkwood sporesCool and some elvish wine.

PS. I actually haven't seen every picture of Thorin because these artists and Photoshoppers churn stuff out - never know what you will find like this one! Tho for a second *cough* I thought Gandalf looked like POTC's Captain BarbossaUnsure probably should have left more of the hat or not used so much black LOL.

PS2. Love that Thranduil pic - downloaded!!!!Heart And yes, please post interesting ME history links, because a lot of us are readers and curious about the back stories!

But considering even poor Richard Armitage can't even go to promote his current film without the audience calling out "Thorin" and the press sneaks in BOFA/Thorin questions when they are supposed to be asking about other projects, I feel completely comfortable in my besottedness. Coz evidently a lot of other folks feel exactly the same way

I experienced a little Thorin-thralldom recently when I learnt that RA stayed in character while onset, never relaxing the Thorin-persona, and never sitting down, so that he could maintain the intensity.Shocked

Also, that RA had sacrificed a sure-thing acting job – that is, returning to ‘Strike Back’ – in order to commit to The Hobbit when it hadn’t been 100% green lit. And in doing so, he inspired other actors to commit to the journey, paralleling the commitment of the dwarves to follow him.Smile

All very Heart inspiring.

RA has been described as easy-going, and PJ had commented on RA being this "unassuming guy" but that he would completely change as Thorin. That he even walked differently. And RA said during the filming that "Thorin was never far away" and he even would have dreams AS Thorin.

From what I can understand from articles RA is a very committed actor anyway, but personally believe that PJ got more than he ever dreamed when he hired RA - someone who would utilize a "voice that could command an army", the musical theater and classical training, and the complete and utter commitment. There's no way to know but I wouldn't be surprised to find out that even tho Thorin was a lead character, that the part was expanded when they understood what was coming through the camera lens. I know they actually began writing FOR RA's Thorin, as opposed to just writing a script.

Which is actually why I have my fingers crossed for more Thranduil. Re the now-famous Misty Mountains, RA has said they didn't know how good it would be, in the end. And I think there's no way to know how compelling Thranduil would be, how charismatic, or how compelling Thorin/Thranduil are, until you film it. But PJ knows NOW, so I am hoping he tweaks things so there is LOTS of Thranduil time.Unsure

I don't worry about Thorin-time because he's a pivotal lead and RA has made his mark. But I'll be pretty upset if there isn't LOTS of Thranduil time - and elven king that has stepped from my books and is more than I ever imaginedHeart, like Thorin.

LOL RA has a legion of expanding fans - the "Armitage Army" and one of the reasons he is so well thought of is everything you have described. Another thing that impresses me is that evidently he has been supporting a few favorite charities from quite early on in his acting career. I'm even impressed he has lately opted to move to the U.S. for a while, and of course RA is a WELCOME addition to our melting pot.CoolTongue

You're welcome :) [In reply to]

I'm happy to help :)

I do hope they show his kinder side. So far, to those who haven't read the book, I suppose Thranduil does seem rather- would aloof be the right word? My sister doesn't like him much (she loves Legolas though). I tried explaining why Thranduil is isolating himself but I'm not very good at explaining things...

I'm hoping they show Thranduil and Bilbo's interactions too.
*Possible Spoilers*
Bilbo needs to give the Arkenstone to Bard and Thranduil, after all. And I don't see why Thranduil wouldn't try to keep Bilbo safe, as he knows Thorin is likely to get very, very angry once he finds out what Bilbo has done. Thranduil already knows what the Arkenstone means to Thorin "It is precious to you beyond measure."

I'm just curious how they're going to show Thranduil's change from "Other lands are not my concern", to coming to help and fight.

Sorry if all of the above has been said already Evil

There are so many excellent pictures online, and so many talented artists on deviantArt! I'm afraid I'm still confused as to how to add a picture onto a post, or how to resize so I can attach it? Sorry, I'm still rather new to posting...

Ha yes Gandalf indeed looks a bit like Barbossa [In reply to]

I think PJ and his team did an amazing job with the casting. Though I didn't know these two actors before TH came out, I believe both LP and RA are born for these roles. I believe every single word they say, and truthfully can't wait for Thorin to completely lose it in the BotFA. That will be an interesting sight, I'm looking forward of RA's portrayal of 'mad' Thorin. We already got a sneak peek of that in the teaser.

Yes I do think 'complex, wildly charismatic figure..' is a good description of both Thorin and ThranduilHeart Though I find Thranduil more enigmatic and cunning, that probably comes from the fact that he's an (reasonably old) Elf, whereas Thorin can be quite blunt at times and would be wise to reconsider some of his words or actions before he acts out on them. But then again, maybe that is the general character of Dwarves? Blunt, earthy and quick to act out their beliefs?

I hope there will be some interaction between Thranduil en Legolas that opens his eyes to ride out for war. Or maybe he'll try to find his son (since at the end of DOS, he has no idea where Legolas is hanging out)?

Now THAT is what I call commitment to your role! IIRC, in that blog post done by the extremely excited Make-A-Wish girl, she said that even she got a Thorin glare just before someone told RA who she was. Then she said something like, his expression turned from "Orcs must die!" to "Puppies, rainbows, and tea parties, yay!" Lol! He's such a sweet guy!Angelic

I agree, there is no longer any excuse for PJ not to know how much people love Thrandy, but I'm not too worried. The fact that we got those great Thranduil shots in the BotFA teaser is promising, IMO and I think the DOS EE is sounding hopeful too. We also can't forget that there will be a BotFA EE as well.

I think it's great (on the TA threads anyway) that all seem to appreciate the beauty of each other's favorites, and what all these actors bring to the table. And work to be fair about their opinions too. One of the things I like about that scene is Bilbo right at Thorin's back - at this stage to me with those two, it just feels right, and I often think how far those two have come with their relationship *sob*. I've always found it very touching that this little hobbit managed to reach through the bitterness and anger of Thorin with such a selfless, but "hobbity" act of courage.HeartHeartHeart

I'm feeling cautiously hopeful about Thranduil-time as if PJ sticks to the book a fair amount, there are key scenes that Thranduil HAS to be part of. You make a good point about Thranduil being highlighted in the teaser, and I am sure that got a rousing response. SOMEONE is tracking the online chatter I am sure - if I made movies I would be!

Oh, definitely. I'm familiar with the region and I already picture RA at the Kennedy Center or in Baltimore - maybe Boston? doing "The Crucible"!!!! And RA doesn't sound like a foodie, but he needs to enjoy U.S. regional cuisine from the lobsters of Maine to the Maryland blue crabs to southern soul food and barbecue to the salmon from the West and so on...
Can you imagine? I think Orlando Bloom lives in NY at least part of the time, and RA lives there and they are friends - running into them at a restaurant? Guess in New York it is uncoolCool to notice celebrities but how could you NOT.HeartHeartHeartTongue

Hi Willow! some image posting info! [In reply to]

Don't worry about being new to posting, I wrote some stuff about posting images in this earlier "Favorite costume" thread on the Hobbit board because someone else had exactly the same interest:

http://newboards.theonering.net/..._latest_reply;so=ASC

But all the info is in the TORn image guide at:
http://www.amagpiesnest.com/a/torn/PostingImages/

And if TORn member Kim is around, she can point you to her excellent instructions as well.

It took me months and months before I tried posting an image, so my tips:
1) Watch the size guidelines from the guide, and there's lots of online image resizers that can bring an image down to TORn requirements - Photoshop and Gimp can scale down images too during a save or export - Photoshop has the great "save for web" feature; with Gimp just click advanced options during the export to tweak the size.

2) Posting to TORn to me is kind of a 2-step process once the image is small enough. You need to UPLOAD the image first. And then INSERT into your post.

Let us know if these links don't work for you or for more info!Evil

Hey VValar can I ask you a question? [In reply to]

Re:

and truthfully can't wait for Thorin to completely lose it in the BotFA. That will be an interesting sight, I'm looking forward of RA's portrayal of 'mad' Thorin. We already got a sneak peek of that in the teaser.

I was wondering if you would mind saying why just because I'm curious - a lot of people seem to be looking forward to that, but I am not sure why tho I am as human as anyone and there is some terrible fascination with the great becoming a train wreak (which we see all too often). Or maybe you already didUnsure - it's interesting. Terrible to see, but interesting. But plz just say "because" if you like *grins*.Cool

Tho for me I'm less with the madness - (tho it will be completely heartbreaking) - RA mentioned in an early interview - or alluded to - Thorin becoming "physically violent" with Bilbo which as far as I know happens in the book. So for me there's kind of an awful fascination thinking of that, especially with the quality of these two actors. And while of course I know why Bilbo does what he does (in the films) I can see what a horrific betrayal that would be from Thorin's perspective.

ON THE OTHER HAND I'm already wondering if it will be all that dark, really. E.g. considerably watered down from what we might imagine. For one thing, Thror was still functioning and even leading a charge in battle, so maybe dragon sickness doesn't make you that far gone. And also PJ *sigh* may either dilute things on purpose or *sigh* PJ from time to time seems to go through SOME scenes in DOS at full speed, so there's barely time to feel the importance or it feels jarring.Mad

Not ALL the time, but re a few scenes in DOS think PJ needed to take his foot off the gas a bit.Unsure

LOL I am terrible, because in the teaser - it happens so fast you can barely tell - but the "I will have war" when Thorin's teeth are bared and his eyes are blazing with contempt and to me a kind of mania - it's terrible. But IMO beautiful, too. That looked incredible on a big screen.HeartHeartHeartHeartHeart

Poor Kili! And Fili as well, not just the end, but watching their innocence and fun die. The WETA C & D book has a passage where Aidan Turner talks about Kili not being the same after Tauriel heals him.
He get healed, but something is gone from Kili after that. I suppose the same kind of thing happened to Thorin.Frown

Any interaction between Thranduil and Legolas is fine by me! Legolas reporting to Thranduil or Thranduil seeking his son, either one. :)
Though, Mirkwood is fairly close to Lake-Town, isn't it? Would they be able to hear Smaug's attack from there? They would be able to see it, surely? I mean, in DOS Tauriel and Legolas were looking at Lake-Town after the Barrel Escape...does this mean other Elves could witness the attack from the borders of Mirkwood and report to Thranduil (including that Legolas and Tauriel are missing)? Or does Legolas report after the attack? He and Tauriel were standing with the refugees in the Teaser...Either way, I wonder how angry Thranduil will be as he ordered the borders closed and the watch doubled "No one enters this kingdom...and no one leaves it". Can you imagine the tension? Especially once he hears that his son and Captain of the Guard have both defied his order? Then again, them defying his order may be exactly what it takes to help him realize that the events unfolding cannot be ignored...? Oh, the possibilities!

     Hello! [In reply to]

Hello, VValar!
Nice to meet you :)

Er, unfortunately, I don't know what you use re-posting pictures because it seems to be giving me the broken link symbol? :/

Argh! I tried posting but it didn't work (I think I may've briefly lost internet connection), and now I have to try to remember it all and re-write it! :(

Though, Mirkwood is fairly close to Lake-Town, isn't it? Would they be able to hear Smaug's attack from there? They would be able to see it, surely? I mean, in DOS Legolas and Tauriel were looking out at Lake-Town after the Barrel escape...is it possible the Elves see the attack from the borders of Mirkwood and report to Thranduil (including that Legolas and Tauriel are missing)? Or does Legolas report after the attack? *Teaser Trailer Spoiler!* He and Tauriel were standing with refugees in the Teaser... *End Trailer Spoiler* (sorry, not sure if you've seen it or are avoiding spoilers). Either way, I wonder how angry Thranduil will be. He ordered the borders closed and the watch doubled "No one enters this kingdom...and no one leaves it." Can you imagine the tension? Especially once he realizes that his son and Captain of the Guard have both defied his order?      Posting images [In reply to]

Ooooh, thank you Avandel and Kim for the info!

I found a pic of Thranduil online and tried following the instructions. I had to resize it. I'll try adding it to this post. I apologize if this pic has been posted before- I found it on DeviantArt (and saved it on my computer so I could resize it). Is it ok to post pics from there, or do we copy and paste the link of the page we found the picture on? Sorry, I have read the rules but I'm still a bit confused...

Ok, I tried several times to attach the pic, but I'm having trouble when it comes to inserting the pic (most of the time the box that lets me insert it into the post doesn't appear). I guess it could be my computer playing up. I might try again later...

P.S. I realized I somehow accidentally double-posted my last post (I thought it didn't work because the page wasn't loading properly). I tried deleting it but can't because it's been over ten minutes- is there a way to delete the second post?

I'm soooo sorry about all the questions!

     Hi Willow353 [In reply to]

Here are some simplified steps for posting once you've got the image re-sized. If you're posting someone else's fanart, I usually post the photo and the link to page they have it posted on. Lurker knows how to make the actual photo clickable, so maybe she'll chime in here. It sounds like you may need to check your pop up blocker if you're not getting the insert window. As for deleting the accidental second post, you can just post a new thread on the Feedback forum and ask the forum admins to delete it. Hope this helps, always happy to answer questions. Smile

Once you have the photo re-sized:

  1. Open your post and click on the Browse button next to Attachment on the bottom of the page
  2. Select your photo saved on your computer
  3. Check the box next to Inline
  4. Click Upload attachment
  5. This will refresh your screen
  6. You'll see the photo attached at the bottom of the page
  7. Within the body of the post, hit the space bar a few times and highlight the blank spaces **this is the trick I missed the first couple of attempts**
  8. Click on the photo image icon in the editing bar
  9. In the pop up window, click Inline image
  10. Click the radio button next to the name of your image, then click Submit
  11. This will insert the photo

Note: these steps are in Magpie's instructions, and I think you need to be in Advanced Editor to see all the buttons - I think Basic Editor requires you to enter code.

“Will you follow me, one last time?”

What to do with your time until then?
You could always consider planning a trip to the US or any of the European countries around the time of the premiere. Would you happen to have any friends/relatives living there?

LOL - how I'd love to indulge - what a fantastic trip that could be! Laugh Most annoyingly, since I work in advertising, asking for time off before Christmas = forget about it!Unimpressed

New Zealand would be the best bet if I were to head anywhere - it's only three hours away and my entire family live there. I did think about concocting a sneaky 'family emergency' but I am way too conscientious a worker and hopeless at faking that kind of thing. If I were more financially fluid, I could nip over for the weekend..... but since am spending October in Sth Africa, money will be in short supply, as will my boss's patience. Pirate
Nope, I'll just have to throw myself into work. I suspect work will rise up to meet me anyway.Crazy

Photo-posting - thanks for those tips Kim. And to think all this time I've been hosting pics off Photobucket, (and grumbling about the time that extra step takes) when all this time, there was a shortcut! Smile

Eurvandi thanks for the interactive map of Beleriand. I can see its going to be a useful reading too! *saved to my special Sil folder* Heart

The TA (very) Quickie Help/TIPS for adding IMAGES and POSTING [In reply to]

So I'm looking in and saw Willow's SOS on images and double-post, and Avandel and Kim's helpful tips for her. I'm collating all their helpful tips here for anyone needing a quick(?) start.

  • The TORn FAQ on the "Welcome To TORn" forum is a great start for all questions actually, from making a post, adding Pretty! to asking for post edit and MUCH MUCH more.
    • First, check the editor mode you're on when posting, Basic or Advanced. Ref 2.8 Replying to posts seems slower than on the old boards. Can I speed it up?
    • Specifically for image posting, ref 2.20 How do I add a picture to a post? and 2.21 How do I upload an attachment? Also, read 2.22 How do I add a link to a post? (NOTE: It's a lot easier to use Advanced Editor unless you're familiar with HTML and webpage coding. Then Markup Help is your friend. See also 2.9 How can I get markup help?)
    • For help with post edit/deletion, ref 2.24 Oops! I made a mistake in my post … can I fix it? and 2.25 Why can’t I edit and/or delete my post?

That's the longcut. If you want a shortcut on how to post images, do as Kim sez in her post. If you want to get fancy on the Pretty! check out Avandel's post with information on software and options for image manipulation. Avandel's post also has information on TORn's guidelines about image size and so on. Still, it's recommended that you're on Advanced Editor mode to help doing any of these things less painful.

As for what Kim mentioned about making an image
clickable, it's easy - basically it's the same process as making text a clickable link. As you would with making clickable text in your post, you need to have an image you can select in your post. So:
  1. Get your image onto your post
  2. Select/highlight the image. Make sure you're selecting the right thing.
  3. Click on the "Link" icon on the edit bar, and paste the url of the image in the pop up window, then click Submit
  4. Viola!Smile

One last thing: The void is your friend. Kim mentioned in her post one important trick is to hit the space bar a few times before adding an image. I find this helps when using the other tools on the edit bar too. Specifically the "Quote" icon. Always be sure you have an <Enter> before AND after your quote. So basically you will hit <ENTER> 3 times, place your cursor on the middle <ENTER> line before you do a quotey. That way, you can add more stuff before and after your quote instead of having everything in a quote mosh.
Hope this helps for Willow and anyone else who wants to threadlard Sly

PS: Posting and adding images/links
can be daunting at first, (and I considers meself good with getting tech stuff). But isn't everything? So hang in there and just try again if the first try didn't work.

A few thots... before I get back to you-know-what [In reply to]

I think the actors and crews have been great! It seems like they're not just you know, humouring the visitors on the set. That particular account was so enjoyable to read. And much respect to LP for really taking the time to spend with her though she didn't expect to see him and was really there for RA and OB as they're her fav char and first celeb crush respectively (IIRC). Of course RA and OB were also great, but reading her account, I just thought LP was really the classy standout. Also, in one of the SDCC vids of LP and CB back in TAVIII, he also mentioned the visitors.

Quote
I think it's great (on the TA threads anyway) that all seem to appreciate the beauty of each other's favorites, and what all these actors bring to the table. And work to be fair about their opinions too. One of the things I like about that scene is Bilbo right at Thorin's back - at this stage to me with those two, it just feels right, and I often think how far those two have come with their relationship *sob*. I've always found it very touching that this little hobbit managed to reach through the bitterness and anger of Thorin with such a selfless, but "hobbity" act of courage.HeartHeartHeart

Yup! And it's been fun (for me) the gentle ribbing of the characters we do and the laughs we get out of it Tongue

That image is nice. Am reminded of the one with Thorin, Bilbo and Thranduil all sitting together thought-bubbling about their respective OCDs.

Quote
I'm feeling cautiously hopeful about Thranduil-time as if PJ sticks to the book a fair amount, there are key scenes that Thranduil HAS to be part of. You make a good point about Thranduil being highlighted in the teaser, and I am sure that got a rousing response. SOMEONE is tracking the online chatter I am sure - if I made movies I would be!

*fingers crossed* Well, we can hope until Dec either smacks us in the face or make us deliriously happyEvil

Quote

Virginia sounds lovely. At least the National Parks phots I saw. *drool* I think the best thing about living in a place like that is to just roadtrip! the heck out of the car. I would so do parkcrawls Evil

Isn't LP also living in NY/NYC? And now RA and OB too? Wow, wonder how many ME actors are residents or visit regularly. *wonders what it takes to uproot*

“We figured “The way the character is designed—he’s beautiful, he’s exquisite,” Pace says. ”He’s ethereal, but also unforgiving and cold, which we figured out before I even shot a scene. We would do the costume fittings and I would be like, ‘Yeah, he takes up a lot of space this guy. He belongs on a throne.’”

Not the exact quote, but close enough:

Quote
QUESTION: One last question: What was your reaction to when you first put on the ears, and the clothes, and the hairstyling? What did it feel like to look at yourself and see Thranduil?

LEE PACE: It was a little chilling, to be honest. I looked so different from myself. Obviously, I’m not going to play this Elvenking like me. No one wants to see that. But, yeah, it was very interesting. The way the character is designed—he’s beautiful, he’s exquisite. There’s something very ethereal about him. But also unforgiving and cold. We figured that out with the way he looks before I even shot a scene. We would do the costume fittings and I would be like, ‘Yeah, he takes up a lot of space this guy. He belongs on a throne.’

Thranduil, Bilbo and Thorin [In reply to]

Quote

*Sob* FrownFrownFrown

Well said! You know how I feel about the TH triumvirate. They are very interesting characters to me, Thorin more so due to the movies, are all wonderfully portrayed to me, and I am hoping BotFA will not sell anyone of them short.

I just keep thinking about that image of them three in a pile pining after their respective precious EvilTongue

Whoever starts threads in that two-week window need to put a reminder to posters to plaster their post titles with [SPOILER] so those of us who want to avoid spoilage but still want our TA fix can still come straight to the thread and hang out.

PS a word to the wise about the threadlock threat =P [In reply to]

If you read the lexicon in the opening post, threadlock is real. When we get past the 200post count, posting can be quite the walk on the ledge, because anything a mod may swoop in and close it forevah. We can still post until then, but if you don't want to lose your post before it's seen light of day, copy it to a word processor first, then hit the Submit button. So if we get threadlocked, you can still post, but in the new thread. Hope this helps.

Thank you Derwyn! [In reply to]

That was moving to read - an impressive young lady - and impressive re PJ & co.

I had read one article? where RA has sent some of Thorin's chain maille and a letter to a cancer victim a while ago - as far as I remember she had to miss meeting RA re his filming which would totally be awful - but in any case I am glad PJ & co. know the reach of what they do is far beyond "mere films."

     Same person! [In reply to]

Elvenbutterflies did write at one point about receiving a letter from Richard, with a signed photo - where he's in prison in the Elvenking's lockups and is saying, "Not our only hope" (probably because of her battle with cancer) - and some pieces of Thorin's chain mail.

The letter was on the 'Net for a while, and I've read it, but she took it down and requested that anyone who had copied it do so also. But it did contain major spoilers - including Thorin's last words to Bilbo.

Of course you can ask me! [In reply to]

I think it's because Thorin is the one character who is supposedly undergo the greatest transformation of all characters in TH.
I was intrigued to see it happen with Frodo/Sam, Gandalf and -to some extend- Aragorn in the LotR, who in my opinion changed most during the story as a character. In comparison to, for example Legolas or Gimli, who stay IMO most true to the characters they already are at the beginning of the Fellowship. Does that make sense? I hope it does, sometimes I'm hopeless at explaining.

Either for better or worse, I'm looking forward to seeing some character development. In Thorin, as well as Thranduil, who I think will also have a change of heart somewhere in the BoFA.
Of course everyone who is involved in the journey of TH will somehow be affected or changed by their experiences (Bilbo of course, not for a small part thanks to finding the ring - we already see it affecting him in DOS, Bard, Legolas, etc.) But mostly these characters will develop themselves in a good way, with Thorin this will not be the case. And I'm very curious to see it play out on the big screen.

I'm going to save it for reading later. Though, OTOMH, I think Celeborn and Thranduil are at least acquaintances, both being Sindar and having lived in Doriath before it all went sideways. Dang, I need to get back on track with my Silm-read Evil

Yes it would seem that way to me as well. But reading this article/blog made me truely consider the possibility of them actually being related as well. Very interesting reading and lots of fun to read others opinions and research. Makes you rethink certain (plot/character)holes Smile

Question about Thranduil's sword [In reply to]

I have a question regarding Thranduil's sword. I know there was a thread started about his fighting style not too long ago, featuring the sword(s) as well. But I can't seem to find it and I figured that kindof the same people who responded in said thread are in this one as well, so here it is:

First off his sword, I absolutely love all of the details Heart, it looks beautiful and lethal at the same time.

Obviously the design differs quite a bit from most of the swords we have already seen in LotR or the Hobbit thus far.
What I'm kind of missing here is the crossguard, that piece of metal placed between the blade and the hilt. I believe it is placed there to protect the hand of the wielder. And I guess it would come in handy to prevent your hand from slipping downward onto your own blade during battle. But I don't see anything of a considerable sized crossguard on Thranduil's sword that could protect his hand if he were to deflect a high blow. If you look at Orcrist, Sting or any of the swords of Aragron, Gandalf etc., they all have one.

Soooo this leaves me question: why hasn't he got one? Does this mean he is so super awesome in his fighting Heart that he hardly needs one?
