Leggy was sent to Rivendell to report Gollum's escape so Thranduil would prolly only hear about Frodo when he receives Leggy's note he won't be home for dinner.Smile

That's what happens when one has watched FOTR multiple times (Leggy's nicely timed arrival) but only read the book twice

Just thinking back to my first post and the crickets- cricking only situation back then, I sure am glad for everybody's indulgence to get the TA thread going again Blush Just love the fact that TA is now a part of Thrall lexicon too *snigger*

Thranduil and Bilbo, and negotiations at Erebor (some nerdy thoughts) [In reply to]

ETA: oops, book spoilers!

Quote
I often wonder what LP's Thranduil will make of this Hobbit.

Bilbo in the book I believe formed his very positive opinion of Thranduil while gallivanting through the Halls (of course he was already naturally biased, since he thought well of Elves ever since the wafting chiffon parade of Rivendell Tongue ). And he liked what he saw, because why else would he think to request an audience with both Bard, who he apparently interacted with in Lake-town, and Thranduil (whom he would have had opportunity to observe only while sneaking around) when he sneaked into the camp of the combined host? So i am peeved they did not show Bilbo in the Halls to set that up. Hopefully they are still going with that sentiment of Bilbo's - time for them to redeem Thranduil's noble cred for the general audience's benefit Frown

But interesting question there - what would Thranduil make of Bilbo? I do believe he does have some idea of hobbits, since there was a mixed commune (of hobbits, elves and men... can't remember if there were dwarves) in the Vale of Anduin, near the fateful Gladden Fields in the past, and he might even have stopped there en-route home from the War. I think Thranduil will take to this hobbit. And as Eruvandi said, with his superb deductive intellect he probably would put things together faster than a dwarf can put away supper. Certainly they parted on cordial terms after travelling together as far as Mirkwood's borders on the way home. I so wanna see Thranduil saying those book lines re Bilbo in and post Battle! *pout* Hopefully we get more development for this relationship in the movie.

Quote
Because maddened or not, I often think Bard might have stood some sort of chance, maybe even on the side w. Balin or the Heirs, if only, if only, he had used a soft approach. I can't think of anything worse he could have done than show up side by side with Thranduil, tho maybe he didn't know the back history.Frown And *sigh* I can't think of anything worse Bilbo could have done, than put the stone in the hands of Thranduil - in the book for be there was a lot more distance, but even then I was uncomfortable. But maybe in the film Bilbo tries to deal with Bard, but yah know Thranduil is a king and has the well-equipped army and just ends up dominating. Because he is a king.Heart

And now I wonder will Bilbo mention that, and just be ignored?Unsure

Re Bilbo dealing with Bard - see above. Smile

I was quite surprised at the Empire bit about Thranduil being with Bard at the negotiating wall (though of course any bit more of Thranduil we get I can cetainly live with Angelic). In the book, Thranduil kept away for the most part, which I thought was prudent, aside from being THIS KING who would naturally dominateHeart, since Thorin had expressed his outrage and demanded Bard dissociate himself with the Elves and get them packing before he would consider talking to him. Bard, who true to his honourable word stayed allies with Thranduil, spoke with Thorin by himself at least once or twice. Thranduil only appeared at Erebor's gates with Bard and the rest, when the deadline for Thorin's answer and payment was due, aka the start of Battle.

Thanks Avandel for your as usual gracious and positive response (this is how everyone responds in here though!) [In reply to]

I feel exactly the same way, because of you and Lurker and everyone else, this whole new world has opened up for me. I am reading again and learning all sorts of cool things about Elvish history (of which I knew absolutely nothing), and ancient Dwarvish history (of which I knew little). And it is fun coming in here, there is so much going on and different ideas being bounced around and funny things to read. I am loving it!

I think I am equally enthralled with both Thorin and Thranduil at this point, neck and neck. I am reading more Elvish history tho cuz I am pretty good with the Dwarvish histories but very week in my Elvish histories.

can slap together posters like this one - just in case you can't choose, now you don't have to, LOL. Tho this was just a quicky Gimp - OK not THAT quick
but fun - and if I were going to stick on my wall or in a scrap book I would work a lot harder.

But it's to encourage Lurker, 'coz Gimp while super-powerful isn't the most INTUITIVE SW, and I had it easier 'coz I knew some PS. But once you learn one of
these, you can power your way through other photo SW. Lurker, I think what you did was terrific and was what I would have suggested re first project, hang in there

Not like I am some expert or anything anyway - not like the WETA guysUnsure. Usually it's having some idea pop into my head and THEN I go
get the manual to figure out how to do it.

Since the Thranduil part of the Hobbit is pretty much a blank. So perhaps PJ will ratchet things up from the original, e.g. tho am not sure WHY. Of course it's more interesting and to put it bluntly makes Thorin look less of a jerk (not that I EVER think that way re my beloved badass) but for those thick types in the audience who can't appreciate a nuance:

"See! there's Thranduil making the madder Thorin even more insane, but of course Thranduil drives Thorin crazy and the appearance of Thranduil sends Thorin over the edge!!! And there's good-guy saintly Bard channeling Aragorn's perpetually sad and far-away look, because he's a good and noble guy, and we need the audience to switch their affections to Bard 'coz we're gonna kill off some popular characters and we don't want people walking out with all the snack money!! And we need to emphasize Thranduil's HAUTEUR, because his subsequent change of attitude will be all the more DRAMATIC!! *Sob* Does everyone GET IT???"

And a PS re Gimp tips [In reply to]

I've gotta another answer under a dual post to Ve, but re the text showing up problem....

1) Gimp probably has a drop-shadow thing - probably under effects, but a cheat way is to duplicate the text layer, color it black, and
in the layer box drag it under the text layer in the layer palette - instant shadow....

2) Make a new layer - grab the square selection tool - is nice if you click on feather edges and you can adjust the feathering amount - draw a
box and fill w. black or whatever. Then change the opacity of the layer to 20-30% and put this box layer under your text - you can see this kind
of thing in the "rabble" image I did - some references will call this is screen layer.

Keep on Gimping, when you can *grins* we have months to find something to do before EEFrownFrownFrown

PS - And you did a background knock-out w. the Thranduil pic! That's awesome! Pain isn't knocking out all that background clutter *grins* Cool

get sick all over the floor, and then dig all of the dirt out of the flower pots and do his business in it. I had throw away some of my favorite plants and give away the survivors. He's an ornery one!

ROFLOL!!!!! - yep, how often, since I have a Maine Coone, have I stepped in cat sick green fur hairballs. And she refuses to use a scratching post, so I am actually HAPPY when she uses the heating
grate and not the "designer" baskets. Funny how I wouldn't have her any other way, even when she smacks me on occasion. But she comes and sits between the shower curtain and liner,
and is near my shoulder when I am flipping through the WETA booksHeartHeartHeart.

Get thee some Gimp! [In reply to]

Which is as or more powerful than PS, is stable, been around a long time, and is free! This is good stuff - lots of
junk in the open source arena, but the UNIX/Linux folks developed this.

Paint and other sw can do a LOT, but the time comes when you just wanna do some "floating" heads LOL
or montages and clean up so bad images - IMO can't beat photo editing software for getting rid of annoying
PR text and stuff like that, or for making your own posters.

But I know you are BUSY. Something to tinker with on a rainy day, maybe?
