The mountain [In reply to] Can't Post

goats or war goats/rams of Dain look spectacular in the shot of the massive charging. It is one of my favourite shots along with Thranduil walking on Dale and the Laketown refugees walking towards outside Dale(?)

You knew I'd be here *grins* [In reply to] Can't Post

You mean, wherever you are, you can't hear the high-pitched squeals of the hair freaks/Heirs of Durin contingent/Thorin Thralls round the world? SSSSSSQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!Wink

Ahem.Blush

Overall thoughts? I'm blown away, thank you for asking! I had been getting a little uneasy as what if this turned somehow corny, or PJ decided to make Thorin so insane e.g. underpants on his head kind of thing, or it just turned into an LOTR reboot. Which essentially would have meant the movies were already over for me (not that I don't love LOTR like all).Unsure Also the Galadriel/Gandalf think was much better than I was imagining.

I have the impression (so far) that this film has been approached with the care and respect of a jeweler (whew!!!), that scene by scene all will be done with respect, taste. It's gonna hurt - Bilbo already is breaking my heart - I don't know, but it looks like the dwarves HAVE abandoned him tho that may just be them going to fight and ignoring Bilbo, as Thorin won't let Bilbo fight, or maybe Bilbo just won't but he won't leave his friends - but no way to know. Thorin may be maddened but looks every inch a mountain king in his prime - just epic. Yes, the crown image is my favorite so far - the mountain king has come into his own, but what heartbreak. It's Thorin. But it's a dark Thorin *many tears* there is such a hardness in his eyes (RA incredible actor !!!!)

And it's almost like Bard is begging Thorin to make another choice - that hurts. And the scenes of the Laketowners are every bit as poignant and bleak as anything LOTR ever did IMO.

And finally Thranduil, this beautiful, fey Elven King - I can see why you like that - I do too, very muchHeartHeartHeart. It's not the same but there was this children's book I read, where this goddess would walk the bloody battlefields and as her cloak dragged the blood changed to fields of poppies. Somehow Thranduil walking through Dale reminds me of a being like that, and maybe remembering the fall of his own father? Beautiful, haunting, imagery. The silvery elven king, his own hair almost white, against the darkness of the fallen.

Hope you are happy with the trailer too! The only thing I can think that is missing are the ravens...they don't need to talk tho so may show up later in some from. Thanks again for asking - so far, you may be so RIGHT. Dark, heartbreaking - but glorious. I just gotta remember - among other things - that scene (of all movies) from Conan the Barbarian "do you want to live forever?"

They have graded the shots [In reply to] Can't Post

In Reply To
....they don't color correct it at least to the point where it's pretty close to the final result. It's not like PJ doesn't have any idea what he wants the film to look like and it's not like color correcting is that time consuming.

Since the film isn't finished, it's not the final grading. They grade all of the shots when the films nearly finished so the colouring is consistent between shots.

Nahh... I agree with Estel. [In reply to] Can't Post

They tried hard for the emotion but it did not work for me 100%... also, they tried to avoid unfinished CGI shots and yet put in that chariot.

However, most of the scenes we get to see indicate a very good movie that could reach the epic heights of LotR.

"I am afraid it is only too likely to be true what you say about the critics and the public. I am dreading the publication for it will be impossible not to mind what is said. I have exposed my heart to be shot at." J.R.R. Tolkien

We all have our hearts and minds one way or another invested in these books and movies. So we all mind and should show the necessary respect.

Speaking of color grading [In reply to] Can't Post

I think color grading is a very important aspect of the movie, especially CG-heavy movies like TH - I think the reason to why IMO the CG was better in DOS than AUJ is because DOS had better color grading, AUJ's color grading was way too sharp and bright. DOS found the right notes (with the pitch black Smaug's chamber being my favourite).

The greatest adventure is what lies ahead.

Not to say there won't BE war boars. But in the mountains goats make sense - especially THESE goats. If ordinary white-tail deer are dangerous, think of a what a bighorn sheep and the like could do to you!

That doesn't answer my question [In reply to] Can't Post

They could have color graded the shots to make them consistent within the trailer.

But what even color grading can't get fully rid off is the tendency of these movies (and LOTR too) to overdo it with bright studio lighting. I guess i was never a big fan of Andrew Lesnie...

Bomby's right [In reply to] Can't Post

I used to live in Colorado as well, and bighorn sheep can do some serious damage if provoked.

A boar can also kill a person easily, so I'm still hoping Dain is on one (it would also be quite helpful to differentiate him from the others).

As for the other posters regarding ice and snow- bighorn sheep/rams live high in the mountains, and encounter snow and ice quite frequently. I have no doubt that they would be far more suited to battle (same with boars) than ponies would, and would be a lot more sure footed on ice than ponies as well.

Besides, you never hear anyone singing praises about their "valiant pony leading the charge into glorious battle" lol Tongue

Gonna disagree [In reply to] Can't Post

OT - just sayin' I like color. Most of AUJ's coloring for me was great, had that whimsical fresh quality I'd expected in the Shire - tho Erebor was a bit bright. But the relentless desaturation of DOS began to wear on me after a while - I don't know if that is just showing the darkness coming, or what. But I was happy when the forges lit up - some color, finally.

I don't care, I have unofficially appointed you as chieftain.Sly

It's very time consuming [In reply to] Can't Post

To stop working on the film to concentrate on marketing, trailers, etc. They (not PJ or even Jabez Olssen) probably starting cutting this trailer a couple months ago at least, nowhere near the time when they would start the actual final color grading. At best PJ gives a few notes, but he's got an actual movie to finish (vfx, sound, edit, adr, score, last minute mo-cap performances)!

What a mix of emotions for me! [In reply to] Can't Post

On one hand I've been dying for this trailer, but on the other, I just don't want it to ever end. LOTR/Tolkien has been a huge part of the majority of my life, and the possiblity of no more Middle Earth movies to look forward to (at least in the near future) just kills me. At least we will all have the memories. :)

Anyway, the trailer is the most perfect teaser. It was a great length, enough to satisfy our appetites until October when the main trailer is released, yet leaving us wanting so much more. Such a wonderful setup to know what we have to look forward to.

I have a feeling I will be bawling the entire movie even during the cheery scenes. Unsure
