Great use of Pippin's song from RotK, super atmospheric. Bilbo's solem voice over was great. First the similar profiles, now the crown, Thorin is the double of his grandfather. The elves parting for Bard and his surprised expression were great. Dwarven Armour.

Re [In reply to] Can't Post

So there we have it. And quite a lovely trailer, too.

The winter feeling is great. I'm most impressed by the landscape they've created between Dale and Erebor, and up on the craggy slopes, and how the battle will play out because of that. The frozen river is a nice touch, as is Thranduil walking in the snow. It feels well-constructed, much like the region between Minas Morgul and Minas Tirith, Osgiliath, and Pelennor felt very well-constructed and "complete" and believable.

But the thing that teased me the most is seeing that shot of Kili at Ravenhill ... then that later shot of Bolg marching defiantly out of ... you guessed it ... Ravenhill. BAD NEWS.

At first... [In reply to] Can't Post

I thought of it as Pippin's song (which I love and has always been one of the top goosebump moments in LOTR for me) and then I realized. It's not Pippin's song - it's Bilbo's song, which Pippin remembered and sang in a dark hour. I don't know if that will become apparent in the movies themselves, but it's an entirely appropriate crossover use of the song here. This is the part of the story which creates the Bilbo the younger hobbits know.

Can anyone make out what that first shot is? Is it Thorin's tomb, or something else? I'm having connection problems and I can't get good resolution yet.

Since the dwarves are a mountain people and since the goats are probably both a work animal, mohair and food source it does not seem farfetched though they would have to be large rams...a bigger breed than those of today.

Where was that scene with Galadriel and Gandalf lying on the ground and holdings hands? It wasn´t in the trailer, was it? I find it strange with Galadriel, one could think she is not really there, like in the last hobbit movie, where she talked to Gandalf or the entire council scene from the first movie or in one LOTR movie (don´t know he part) where she helped Frodo getting up. And barefoot, she really must have good elven callusLaugh

Yes, that was my immediate thought [In reply to] Can't Post

The shot is eerily similar to the shot of Dumbledore's corpse in HBP.
I seriously doubt they would see much benefit in playing the "dead-but-not-dead" card, since even casual fans are most likely aware of Gandalf's general attitude to death, lol. I think it's merely a way of making the battle seem that bit more dangerous-when such a powerful character is on the brink like that it can certainly help to heighten the tension (something which I welcome after some of the ridiculous falls that the Dwarves have survived). I have to admit that though I was (and am) a little worried about how that moment is going to be handled, the trailer has reassured me somewhat-it comes across as both dramatic and incredibly touching.
Frankly, a fantastic trailer, albeit short-but to some degree less is more, since what is on display is 100% superb!

Ravenhill is a watchtower on the southernmost (?) point of the south arm of the Lonely Mountain. It overlooks Dale, probably a bit of the surrounding area, and is where the Dwarves go when the left the mountain to find out any news they could (because they don't know what happens after Smaug leaves).

Also, Ravenhill is where friendly ravens, who can speak with dwarves and travel with news, roost.

I first thought that after seeing the banner from comic con and now, after seeing the trailer, the feeling is growing.
To me, in the trailer it looks like the Assault is almost done and quiet. Galadriels walks so slowly and calmed, not like there is a battle going on... so Galadriel finds him right after it maybe ?

Same impression anyone ?

Interesting point [In reply to] Can't Post

In Reply To
I first thought that after seeing the banner from comic con and now, after seeing the trailer, the feeling is growing.
To me, in the trailer it looks like the Assault is almost done and quiet. Galadriels walks so slowly and calmed, not like there is a battle going on... so Galadriel finds him right after it maybe ?

Same impression anyone ?

P.S: Sorry for making a new thread of that ;)

I definitely looked like that, but it could be more like a freezing moment in time?

"Will you follow me... one last time".... YES! Oh yes [In reply to] Can't Post

Haven't yet fathomed all the details, but this really looks stunning. Worth every second of the wait - and I'm jumping for joy that my connection speed came back up!

First impressions - Smaug overflying burning Laketown - Legolas and Tauriel on the Lake shore looking at the ruins. Thranduil in Dale - his expression of horror - Gandalf and Galadriel - shot of the dwarves in armour - Bard and Thorin - every scene composed like an illustration.

Bilbo's voice-over at the beginning... and using Pippin's song is an inspiration.

Colour me happy - and in awe of the achievement of this film already.

Cool

Dol Guldur from that scene alone. It could be before or after any contest of wills. If before, I would guess that Gandalf awakens and they ...Saruman, Galadriel and Gandalf join forces to contest with Sauron. If after, it could show Gandalf utterly spent in the effort. My guess, is that the scene comes before with Galadriel finding Gandalf.

Goat Chariot [In reply to] Can't Post

It's got a balista at the front! It looks like Balin (or Dori?), Dwalin, Fili and Kili are on the chariot. Looks like Balin/Dori is driving, Dwalin on balista, ad Fili and Kili (plus bow) as passengers. I'm guessing the chariot was somewhere in Erebor but where did the goats come from? Wouldn't think they'd be about with Smaug around.

Wish we got a bit more Smaug in the trailer. But I shouldn't complain, it's great.

Oh, good point.... [In reply to] Can't Post

It is Bilbo's song, isn't it.

I've tried freezing frame on the first shot. It could be - as someone else pointed out, it has the same arrangement with a shaft of light that we see in Balin's tomb. There's a white figure - statue, I think? or person caught in the light, standing behind the whatever it is.

I'd be surprised if they were to trail Thorin's tomb quite so early though. I wondered if this might be something like a bed or couch he is carried back to after the battle - where Bilbo sees him - and there will be a later funeral scene. Maybe I'm just being influenced by the Alan Lee illustration of Thorin's funeral, but given the vast spaces they've created in Erebor, that looks a bit too small and enclosed for an impressive funeral; it looks a more intimate space, like a bedroom.

Just a thought.

It is known as Pippin's song [In reply to] Can't Post

which he sings for Denethor, when Faramir rides to Osgiliath (and certain death).
But as Silverlode says. Pippin probably heard this song, and learned it, from Bilbo. A song Bilbo came up with to put this terrible tragedy into words and onto song.
So it actually isn't Pippin's song, but Bilbo's song, sung by Pippin.

In the book of Fellowship of the Ring... [In reply to] Can't Post

... it's Bilbo's walking song, that Frodo, Sam and Pippin sing when they're walking to the new house in Crickhollow. 'Bilbo had made the words, to a tune that was as old as the hills, and taught it to Frodo as they walked in the lanes of the Water-valley and talked about Adventure.'

But the way it was used in the film of Return of the King, to accompany Faramir's desperate attack on Osgiliath, gave it a whole extra level of emotion.

Richer - and gotta admit - far better than I imagined. And the very quiet way Thorin asks if they will follow him, one last time, struck me as much as his power voice ever has. And I was thinking that maybe I'd have an issue with the re-use of LOT music, but if FIT, here. Bilbo's narration breaks my heart.

And I was thinking last night, Thorin's always charged in by himself re the pine tree scene - just seems to me like he's never really asked anyone to follow him, not like that. And I would.

Racing to the Iron Hills? [In reply to] Can't Post

I thought about that too Bomby. That would explain why there are only two Gundabad Wargs instead of a whole army. Also I noticed that the Wargs do have some kind of winter coat don't they? The hair looks longer and more... fluffy ;-)

The question is: Why do those Dwarves ride somewhere in a chariot? They're obviously leaving Erebor torwards Dale. It can't be during the battle. That would be stupid also it doesn't look like there's already an army of enemys except the two Wargs. So where are they going?

- To negotiate with their besiegers? No.

- To leave the more safe Erebor and fight in a open and unprotected chariot against the giant orc army? No.

- To test their own arsenal of weapons? Perhaps.

- To bring the remaining Dwarves from Laketown to Erebor? Perhaps.

- To race torwards (and back again) Dain and the Iron Hills and inform them about the... well bad situation? Why not?

Somehow Dain must be informed about the situation at Erebor since we haven't seen any Ravens yet. Also Ravens are more linked to "Game of Thrones" in modern days although their history as messengers goes back to the old Northern Europe/Viking Mythology and their god Odin. So I think there won't be any talking ravens. But this race which would give Peter a couple of more opportunities:
--> Give us a new (even epic) action race scene (Dwarven chariot against Gundabad Wargs)
--> Gives them a chance to show how technology has evolved since the (let's say: not so well executed) Bunnysled-race in AUJ
--> Gives them a chance to introduce us to a new place in Middle-earth (Iron Hills) since otherwise there would have been no new place to visit.
--> Gives them a good opportunity to introduce Dain and the Dwarves of the Iron Hills beside their role at the battlefield

Only question remains: If they're heading towards the Iron Hills... where did they got the chariot plus the four goats?
The chariot could be from Erebors halls but the goats? Did Smaug had some kind of food chamber with living animals perhaps brought as gifts for the mighty dragon?

"There is only one Lord of the Ring, only one who can bend it to his will. And he does not share power."

Trailer [In reply to] Can't Post

Great first trailer!
Some observations.

When the dwarves are lifting the head of the statue, they are possibly fortifying the main entrance, building some kind of wall.

When Bard says ‘’will you have peace or war’’ he is looking up. And when Thorin answers he is looking down. Thorin is probably standing on the fortification they build.

The elven archers are aiming up and Gandalf looks concerned. I think they are aiming at Thorin and the other dwarves standing on the fortification. At least the time of the day seems to match with the Bard clip.

Dwarfs of the Iron Hills are riding some kind of goats. Maybe the rumors that they are riding war boars where wrong, or maybe they changed them later in the post-production. Or maybe it is just Dain who rides a boar.

The dwarfs on the chariot are going away from the Erebor towards the city of Dale. What are they up to?

I don’t think Bolg is in Dol Guldur, because there are snow on the ruins behind him. I too think it is the Raven Hill and he is walking towards Bilbo. Maybe Beorn will show up just in time to save Bilbo or maybe Bilbo will kill Bolg?

Gives us a chance to see the Iron Hills and some tense dialogue with Dain, perhaps needing some persuading to come to Thorin's aid.

It would make sense if Balin leads the delegation. But I also hope that whoever is on the wagon gets back in time to join Thorin inside Erebor. That Kili is there suggests they do, but then he might fall off.

I love how Thorin is walking at the treasure and other dwarfs are watching from above. Also the way Kili looks at Thorin when he says ‘’I will have war’’. They are really underlining the dragon sickness and Thorin’s madness and the way he is becoming like Thror. He is even wearing the crown, which looks great by the way. I really hope they have kept the scene when Thorin gets to know that Bilbo gave away the Arkenstone and threatens to throw him from the wall.

Aww man, why does the dwarfs ride on rams... [In reply to] Can't Post

Only thing I am dissappointed with is the dwarf cavalry. I could accept Dain riding a big boar cause he's the king and doesn't want to ride all the way. But dwarfs were specifically described as walking long distances at great haste and carrying great burdens at the same time. Now they have been reduced to "Rohirrim 2.0". Hopefully there are not only ram riders in the Ironhill army, but also footsoldiers.

Other than that, the trailer was amazing! Wink

Goat Calvary might sound ridiculous to some (still getting used to it as I was expecting boars Tongue), but those are serious looking steeds there, I like they're barding.

When the chariot is viewed from behind, Dale can be seen in the background, when viewed from the front we can see that it looks like it's just left Erebor. As others have suggested I was wondering if the goat chariot could replace the ravens sent out to the Iron Hills or heading for negotiations, but then there's the mystery of the goats. If the chariot scene is after the Iron Hill Dwarves arrive as you suggested I'm wondering if the entire company head to battle mounted on chariots, then dismount on arrival?

Yes, my username is terrible.

Awesome trailer for an awesome looking movie. [In reply to] Can't Post

Plenty of action but more importantly, plenty of emotion. Lots of beautiful images and shots. The use of Billy Boyd’s song lifted the whole thing up a notch in gravitas and pathos. We are getting back into LotR territory with this.

Some random thoughts:

To me it looks Bilbo is sitting in a room somewhere in Erebor or some other Dwarf structure, looking out a window and brooding.

Beautiful shots of the Laketown refugees with the town burning behind.

Gandalf rides in to join the men in the ruins of Dale?

I see that Legolas is back at the lake and with Tauriel, who is no longer with Kili and the other Dwarves.

Is that Fili, Kili, Bofur and Oin running down the stairs in Erebor? They make it to the Mountain in time to armour up with the rest of the company anyway.

I love the goat ice sled but it doesn't look good for the occupants or the goats.

Thranduil is standing next to the deer from the photo.

Thorin is standing in the piles of treasure while several Dwarves and Bilbo watch from above.

At Dol Guldur, Gandalf definitely looks the worse for wear. The battle must have been tough.

Even if the ravens don't speak, they could be used as a sort of carrier pigeon to send word to Dain.

He has to receive word somehow, so that does seem like the fastest way to do so. But it still leaves hope in my mind that the ravens may still appear in the movie, simply because it's too far to send word otherwise- unless there's a good deal of time that passes between them leaving Erebor and the arrival of all the armies Smile

You mean, wherever you are, you can't hear the high-pitched squeals of the hair freaks/Heirs of Durin contingent/Thorin Thralls round the world? SSSSSSQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!Wink

Ahem.Blush

Overall thoughts? I'm blown away, thank you for asking! I had been getting a little uneasy as what if this turned somehow corny, or PJ decided to make Thorin so insane e.g. underpants on his head kind of thing, or it just turned into an LOTR reboot. Which essentially would have meant the movies were already over for me (not that I don't love LOTR like all).Unsure Also the Galadriel/Gandalf think was much better than I was imagining.

I have the impression (so far) that this film has been approached with the care and respect of a jeweler (whew!!!), that scene by scene all will be done with respect, taste. It's gonna hurt - Bilbo already is breaking my heart - I don't know, but it looks like the dwarves HAVE abandoned him tho that may just be them going to fight and ignoring Bilbo, as Thorin won't let Bilbo fight, or maybe Bilbo just won't but he won't leave his friends - but no way to know. Thorin may be maddened but looks every inch a mountain king in his prime - just epic. Yes, the crown image is my favorite so far - the mountain king has come into his own, but what heartbreak. It's Thorin. But it's a dark Thorin *many tears* there is such a hardness in his eyes (RA incredible actor !!!!)

And it's almost like Bard is begging Thorin to make another choice - that hurts. And the scenes of the Laketowners are every bit as poignant and bleak as anything LOTR ever did IMO.

And finally Thranduil, this beautiful, fey Elven King - I can see why you like that - I do too, very muchHeartHeartHeart. It's not the same but there was this children's book I read, where this goddess would walk the bloody battlefields and as her cloak dragged the blood changed to fields of poppies. Somehow Thranduil walking through Dale reminds me of a being like that, and maybe remembering the fall of his own father? Beautiful, haunting, imagery. The silvery elven king, his own hair almost white, against the darkness of the fallen.

Hope you are happy with the trailer too! The only thing I can think that is missing are the ravens...they don't need to talk tho so may show up later in some from. Thanks again for asking - so far, you may be so RIGHT. Dark, heartbreaking - but glorious. I just gotta remember - among other things - that scene (of all movies) from Conan the Barbarian "do you want to live forever?"

Since the film isn't finished, it's not the final grading. They grade all of the shots when the films nearly finished so the colouring is consistent between shots.

However, most of the scenes we get to see indicate a very good movie that could reach the epic heights of LotR.

Speaking of color grading [In reply to] Can't Post

I think color grading is a very important aspect of the movie, especially CG-heavy movies like TH - I think the reason to why IMO the CG was better in DOS than AUJ is because DOS had better color grading, AUJ's color grading was way too sharp and bright. DOS found the right notes (with the pitch black Smaug's chamber being my favourite).

I used to live in Colorado as well, and bighorn sheep can do some serious damage if provoked.

A boar can also kill a person easily, so I'm still hoping Dain is on one (it would also be quite helpful to differentiate him from the others).

As for the other posters regarding ice and snow- bighorn sheep/rams live high in the mountains, and encounter snow and ice quite frequently. I have no doubt that they would be far more suited to battle (same with boars) than ponies would, and would be a lot more sure footed on ice than ponies as well.

Besides, you never hear anyone singing praises about their "valiant pony leading the charge into glorious battle" lol Tongue

OT - just sayin' I like color. Most of AUJ's coloring for me was great, had that whimsical fresh quality I'd expected in the Shire - tho Erebor was a bit bright. But the relentless desaturation of DOS began to wear on me after a while - I don't know if that is just showing the darkness coming, or what. But I was happy when the forges lit up - some color, finally.

To stop working on the film to concentrate on marketing, trailers, etc. They (not PJ or even Jabez Olssen) probably starting cutting this trailer a couple months ago at least, nowhere near the time when they would start the actual final color grading. At best PJ gives a few notes, but he's got an actual movie to finish (vfx, sound, edit, adr, score, last minute mo-cap performances)!

On one hand I've been dying for this trailer, but on the other, I just don't want it to ever end. LOTR/Tolkien has been a huge part of the majority of my life, and the possiblity of no more Middle Earth movies to look forward to (at least in the near future) just kills me. At least we will all have the memories. :)

Anyway, the trailer is the most perfect teaser. It was a great length, enough to satisfy our appetites until October when the main trailer is released, yet leaving us wanting so much more. Such a wonderful setup to know what we have to look forward to.

I have a feeling I will be bawling the entire movie even during the cheery scenes. Unsure

Outstanding!!! [In reply to] Can't Post

There was so much in what PJ was calling a teaser trailer that I can not imagine what the full trailer will look like.

Bilbo narrating
Pippin singing
Smaug laying waste
Galadriel at Dol Guldur over Gandalf
Bilbo saying he will remember those who lived and who died
Thranduil and the woodland elves armored up and doing battle
Battle goats (o.k. some sort of ram)
Bard getting elven respect and asking the question
Thorin looking very Thror
That final question..
All in just over a minute....the movie will kill me!

LOL if Dain has shown up riding the boar I just might have died.

You wanted to know why the grading doesn't reflect the final film grading [In reply to] Can't Post

In Reply To
They could have color graded the shots to make them consistent within the trailer.

But what even color grading can't get fully rid off is the tendency of these movies (and LOTR too) to overdo it with bright studio lighting. I guess i was never a big fan of Andrew Lesnie...

And I explained its because they haven't gotten the final film cut and so the grading may change when they grade the shots of completed scenes so they fit together.

Good point. [In reply to] Can't Post

Of all the goosebumpy moments in ROTK, Pippin's song has the biggest emotional impact on me. To hear it sung again here just ratcheted up the epicness of the movie about tenfold: it really IS going to be that intense. But Bilbo wrote the song, and this is that dark hour that inspired him. I love that connection. The emotional parallel between Faramir's hopeless suicide charge and what we're seeing here is heartwrenching -- much more so than I was expecting!

1. The kid-like little scenes with zero gravity... Please don't overdo these again!
2. The color grading bothers me too. It all looks candyfied. However, the gritty scenes (galadriel, thranduil...) look fantastic. Very LOTR-esque. I think the candy landscapes are a Weta signature recently... Compare the scenes on the tower in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes with the scenes in the woods.

Wow. [In reply to] Can't Post

I mean, really, WOW.

I've been taking a bit of a hiatus, trying to avoid getting too angsty about this movie -- but this trailer just blew THAT strategy right out of the water. *THIS* is the epic movie we've all been wanting, a proper link to LOTR, isn't it? Sure looks like it to me.

The use of Pippin's -- well, as Silverlode points out, Bilbo's -- song just smashed me over the head like the proverbial ton o' bricks. There's lots of intense scenes in ROTK, and LOTR in general, but that song interspersed with Faramir's suicide mission is the most heart-wrenching of all, for me. I love the connection being made: PJ's telling us it really IS going to be that heart-wrenching. Epic, indeed!

So I'm watching the trailer, feeling the emotional intensity, drooling over Thorin and Thranduil, nearly crying at Pippin's song, and the look on Kili's face as he watches Thorin, and Bilbo brooding in silence near what could be a deathbed or a tomb (?)...and then...wait, aren't those supposed to be boars? THEY HAVE HORNS. Nope, goats. Big, furry goats. I had come to terms with Dwarves riding boars, since boars can actually be quite dangerous animals -- but mountain goats? I couldn't suppress a giggle. I'm really glad I've got nearly five months to come to terms with Dwarves riding goats, because it's going to take that long. Boars charge because they want to kill you for no good reason; goats -- even wild mountain goats -- just don't do that. If you could manage to sit on a boar, it might just run for a while, charging something just because. If you sat on a mountain goat? I'd bet after a minute it just stops and eats, unperturbed.

It's looking fantastic based on this – perhaps better balanced in terms of the characters than DoS was? Thranduil, Bard, Thorin, Bilbo, Gandalf and Galadriel look really impressive. Thranduil is so graceful and wonderful to look at in that armour, and I love what they've made of Bard's character (Luke Evans is a terrific actor).

I also think the visuals (including the costumes) are lovely.

Indeed. And I suspect that's why the shots are in there: to inure us to the slightly ridiculous notion. The same was done with Radagast's bunny-sled, too, if I remember correctly. "Get it in the first trailer so that everyone can get their 'What the heck?!' moment out of the way five months prior to release."

As for pretty much everything else in the trailer, again, like you, I thought it looked rather good. The aftermath of Laketown's destruction, for example, looks like it will be quite a moving section of the film.

There is one who I could follow. There is one I could call king.

because I've always said that I would follow Thorin anywhere, even into battle if necessary. Perhaps I could change the dreaded moment from happening (wishful thinking, but it makes me feel better)? And if you could make me an avatar of that image, I would gladly use it (not that I dislike my present one, but I usually change it when the next installment approaches. Same character, but different scene).

And can Thorin get any more epic (probably), since he seems to get more epic with each installment. Good casting, and I always wondered what he would look like with a crown (even if it is in fact Thror's from the prologue to AUJ).Wink

focus on the actual 'battle' of The Battle Of The Five Armies. I remember us 'battling' it out here on the boards regarding the importance of Smaug and his demise, and from a marketing standpoint having imagery of the burning of laketown be a minor footnote in the trailer is a good way to reset audience expectations as to what is at stake and where things are going...

So, it is before the walls of Erebor, the doom of our time will be decided. [In reply to] Can't Post

The later part of the Hobbit is as much about the Return of the King (Under the Mountain) as it is about Bilbo... heck given Bilbo losing consciousness at a pivotal moment it may be more about a king returning than a hobbit. So far so good.

... yet this looks to be about t'nother king returning... the King of Dale. Fair enough, it's sort of implied in the original tale.

Speaking of implying, when I watched the trailer a few hours ago I was incensed by how Pippin's moment is cheapened by allusion to this tale. My initial thought was, "you're going to have to try harder than that to get the old guard excited about this one."

But now that I've had time to think about it, an anti-war movie may be just what the world needs right now. Perhaps there's more to this one than dazzles the eye?

Did anyone notice that Thranduil's soldiers' armor appears to be made out of wood? I looked at one of the official stills - the one with Brad and the soldiers - and you can see wood grain in the helmet.

Battle rams [In reply to] Can't Post

Initially I was disappointed in seeing them, only because I really wanted to see some Boars (which we may yet, Mr. Frodo!) and because I thought that the whole boar riding thing was actually taken from norse mythology yet I heard nothing of this with rams.

First, off the rams are still a cool looking idea so that's great. Secondly, I did a quick search and apparently they were ridden by characters such as Thor. And what's more, they apparently pulled a chariot on which he rode which shows that the ice chariot isn't far from norse type mythology.

an excerpt from the wiki on Thor:

Thor has two servants, Þjálfi and Röskva, rides in a cart or chariot pulled by two goats

The third movie will show once and for all why the events of the Hobbit were critical for the future of Middle-Earth.

I wonder- book spoilers [In reply to] Can't Post

if that's not his call to arms in Erebor, as the trailer makes it appear to be, but rather maybe he's asking Bilbo to follow him to his final resting place (as in he knows he's dying) after he apologizes?

He sounds so humble, and rather weak while saying that, don't you think? As though it's physically hard for him to get those words out.

If it turns out that way, and he is in fact asking Bilbo to follow him on his "last journey", man oh man will I cry buckets! Knowing the acting capacity of those two actors, it would be.....just WOW....something that cannot be put into words. FrownFrownFrown

It would be a beautiful end to the beautiful tragedy that is the Quest for Erebor, I think, and a fitting end to Thorin Oakenshield's life.

Disappointed [In reply to] Can't Post

I´m a bit disapoinetd with Galadriel, I mean she is my fav character and they have he opportunity to show another side of her, a side that is actually canon. I doubt she went over the Helcaraxe or over the mountains or fought at Alqualondë in a beautiful dress, she´s a Noldo, they have armor and they let her walk across the battlefield as if she is some fairy princess, really gives me more the impression as if she´s just an illusion of Gandalf, similar to Frodo when she helped him to get up, though I hope she´s really there.

The day was killing! So afraid the thread'll be locked by the time I got in here.

So here goes, quickly:

LOVE LOVE LOVE the epicness of the teaser.

Obviously THRANDUIL IS TEH AWESOME! Though, no one noticed the badass reverse handgripHeart Thranduil does with his left-hand sword in both little flashes we got?!

Thorin in that crown... chillingly and aptly regal Dwarven KING, his sire's sire's HEIR indeed. They changed the Bard/Thorin final faceoff before battle was joined, and of course I'm speaking without full context, but it's got epic on it. Not sure about the Elven phalanx/salute for Bard though.

"Will you follow me one last time?" That sounds so poignant, for more than 1 reason of course. And it does seem like it is also PJ and the cast/crew of all ME movies asking the question.

Bilbo! The Elven army! The war goats! I wanna see Dain on his war-boar go up against Thranduil on his war-elk!

... I can almost forgive the full Tauriel lingering shot and so early into the teaser... almost. Will need a few more viewings of the full teaser and an Elvenking soundbit before I can give it a proper thinkFrown

Anyway, I asked Avandel what her overall thoughts on the trailer were and now I would like to know yours.Smile

I rushed out some thoughts here, and a bit more in the TA thread here re Thranduil (its not all fangirlling but you can skip it if you're not comfy to visit Smile). If it's safe to continue without risk of threadlock, I'd want to add, though I'm still trying to order my thoughts since I've only managed to watch the HD version on my 19" laptop only just an hour ago, and it's prolly nothing like Avandel's eloquent odes to her grumpy grubby king ... Tongue but here goes:
  • Generally: LOVE!!! SQUEEEEEE!!! THUD!!!
  • The tone, oh man, the tone... we're really moving towards the LotR vibe.
  • Parts of it definitely give a TTT/RotK epic battle vibe (needless to say) and though it's really to early to say, I''ll side-track here a bit and say IMA crossing my fingers we're getting a clear-crisp through-train to the end ala Helm's Depp, and not the huh-wasn't-that-the-swansong? false pangs we kept getting with RotK - ie I want a LONG BotFA but not RotK-oops-hold-on-one-more-end-to-tie-here treatment.
  • I think we get fitting vibes of the story as it deserves - a prelude to LotR, but not a mawkish goaround for the sake of it, if that makes sense.

Other geeky notes
  • Those wooden logos at the beginning were intriguing
  • The choice of the song was interesting. I like the counterpoint of the sombre in the song and the excitement of battle-action. It is very fitting (we're all excited about BATTLE! but war is no childsplay. (I am a bit of a World Wars dilettante*cough* so I'm no squemish stiff-necked prig about it)
  • Galadriel and Gandalf - I just hope this isn't another astral-Galadriel thingy. Either she's there or she's not.
  • That chariot on ice was wicked.
  • The Elven archery phalanx and their armour harkening to the golden Elven host of Gil-galad in the prologue of FotR (I'd like to think Thranduil took the right notes and got to seriously requisition military equipment to ensure the Mirkwood army is not only dressed for success but will have success as well. And hence at least partly why he desires treasure. The armoury ain't gonna retrofit itself.)
  • The Company in/about Erebor.
  • Bilbo's standing around in his innerwear(?) while the Dwarves file by in glorious armour was intriguing. Did he refuse to fight already before "that" confrontation? I can't imagine he'd still be in Erebor if he already 'fess up about what he did.
  • Legolas' expression as he stood with Bard.
  • No Thranduil spoken line - it's a crime!!!FrownMadTongue

I wish you all could have been there. [In reply to] Can't Post

It was pretty special. For me it was the best trailer of the day it was only by pure luck I was able to get in after initially failing at being able to do so.

Know how you feel [In reply to] Can't Post

However, I first found Tolkien 50 years ago and reveled in reading him. I then got excited about movies being made by Bakshi and was crushed. Then came the Rankin/Bass The Hobbit. Nice and cute. SIGH. When I heard about some guy in New Zealand make the Lord of the Rings movies, I was confused......scared........hopeful. Who was this guy? Could he do a decent movie? I went to see the film with a great deal of trepidation and came out in tears.....they were tears of joy. Waited eagerly for the rest of the trilogy and was overjoyed with the vision of Middle Earth, Jackson had created. The extended editions filled me with even greater joy. Then silence.....then hope for The Hobbit.......they sadness as it looked to be dead........then eagerness when it was green lit. Then more confusion as it went from 1 film and 1 bridge film to 2 Hobbit films.......to 3 Hobbit films. I have loved both so far and can't wait for the finale and then the 3 extended editions. It has been a LONG journey and I will be sad to see it finally come to an end. Or has it????

I'm a bit disappointed [In reply to] Can't Post

After the long wait and even a teaser for the teaser (what?), we really didn't get much here. Okay, so a couple of shots of characters, company logos, and generic movie PR jargon like "the defining chapter", etc. We didn't even really get much of a preview of the Battle of the Five Armies or Smaug burning Laketown, or anything, really. By far, the least interesting Middle Earth trailer yet - heck even the DoS trailer had a smiling Smaug! :-)

What we got with this one was just a little here and there, enough to make you want more (which I guess was the point). I don't know, how much of the story is really left to tell in this film? As far as I'm concerned, DoS was the film that I wanted to see - we got the spiders, the barrels, and of course Smaug! The meat of the story is behind us, now we have an adventure film that really won't have much adventure at all! I'll probably be pleasantly surprised and proved wrong, but as it stands, this is the least anticipated Middle Earth for movie yet, at least for me. That said, maybe I'll sit down in December and be completely blown away. I hope so ...

How much of the story is left to tell? [In reply to] Can't Post

IMO we are just getting to the meat of the story:

Smaug’s destruction of Laketown and Bard’s heroism and rise to leadership.

The Elvenking leaves his cave! Legolas and Tauriel.

The return of the King Under the Mountain and his subsequent fall. Bilbo and the Arkenstone.

The rescue of Gandalf and the battle of Dol Guldur, whatever that will be.

Near or actual war between peoples who should be allies and then...

The Battle of Five Armies, with Azog and/or Bolg, wargs, bats, eagles and Beorn.

Heroism and tragedy.

Bilbo returns Home and the Auction.

There is a lot.

YES PLEASE! Of course the war-boar doesn't stand a chance because the war-elk is the embodiment of its master (Thrandy) who possesses unrivalled agility, strength, vision, and grace.Tongue

Them elk horns will have the boar skewered like, well, a boar on a spit. Tongue

Yes it does but [In reply to] Can't Post

RA made some comment, I believe, re "they CGI'd my face". Which I thought was odd, because I hadn't noticed, but think there may be some 'wee tinkering going on here to emphasize Thorin "devolving" into Thor, kind of. E.g. chunky dwarf, sort of.

Which personally I hope they use a light hand on, because like Legolas' contacts a little bit of that - Thorin lined up in profile with the statue - is PLENTY. I don't need a movie to use a laser pointer so that I "get" it!!! And stop messing with these actors - IMO Legolas is looking hugely better, because it looks like they lightened up.
