Such nice arms :) (response on The Fall) [In reply to]

As the writer says: There is more to his sleeveless tunic than the designer's desire to show off Lee Pace's bare arms (not that we didn't appreciate that,) Heart

Another great piece from this reviewer. And even more symbolism! The Bandit's tunic representing his chest X-rays. And that Roy thinks Alexandria's letter is gibberish when we, the audience, can read it. If Roy is "closed off to the power of love", is this why his girlfriend has left him? I did find that even after two viewings, I wasn't fully clear on the girlfriend part of the story. We're left to put two and two together ourselves.

The execution scene beside the Taj. I have stood looking down from that wall. There is a rather murky looking river down there, devoid of passers by except for a few in boats. It wouldn't have been too difficult to film from that angle.

Amusingly, I did note on The Fall's DVD extras, showing the Indian location shoots underway, they were constantly trying to clear the large crowds of onlookers Laugh

Twin Sword fighting styles [In reply to]

Naturally we Thralls, weaponry nerds and battle aficionados are excitedly anticipating Thranduil's game-changing twin sword fighting style.

I was watching 'The Chronicles of Narnia' the other night, and notice that Jadis uses twin swords in her fight against Peter.
Video clip here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhzVukK4WkQ

Tilda Swinton gets some nifty moves. A little more posing though than Thranduil will have time for -- as he'll be taking on numerous savage opponents, not one inexperienced teenager.

Also, does anyone know what that ninja-style move is called (does it have a name?) when a pair of swords or knives are twirled / flipped by the user over the back of their hands, usually for effect when completing a move? You can see Kirin Shah doing it here while 'elfing it up', right at very end of this vlog: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkfwlcMk-90

Anyone got more double-sword demos to share?

Cloaks and Daggers Thranduil tidbit. (alternate AUJ prologue narration) [In reply to]

So, before the Silm read along started I was reading Cloaks and Daggers, and stumbled across an itty bitty Thranduil tidbit on page 34. Page 34 is about Bilbo's Props and all over the page there are pictures of things like Bilbo's backpack, travel journal and the Red Book of Westmarch. There are also a couple of pictures of the pages from the Red Book of Westmarch that we see Old Bilbo writing in the AUJ prologue. Well, the writing on those Red Book pages is rather small to say the least, but I decided to read them anyway (with a magnifying glass).

One of them actually seems to be some alternate narration for the AUJ prologue. It's similar to what ended up in the movie, but different at the same time.

In the beginning of AUJ Bilbo says:

Quote

It began long ago, in a land far away to the east, the like of which you will not find in the world today. There was the city of Dale, its markets known far and wide full of the bounties of vine and vale, peaceful and prosperous. For this city lay before the doors of the greatest kingdom in Middle Earth… Erebor. Stronghold of Thror. King Under the Mountain. Mightiest of Dwar Lords. Thror ruled with utter surety, never doubting his house would endure, for his line lay secure in the lives of his son and grandson.

Ah, Frodo...Erebor. Built deep in the mountain itself, the beauty of this fortress city was legend. Its wealth lay in the earth; in precious gems hewn from rock and in great seams of gold, running like rivers through stone. The skill of the dwarves was unequaled, fashioning objects of great beauty out of diamond, emerald, ruby, sapphire…

But the Red Book page featured in Cloaks and Daggers says (bold emphasis mine):

Quote

It began far away in another land…more than two hundred years ago…when life was different and the world was a more peaceful and prosperous place. The road was busy with trade among the peoples of Middle Earth.

Dwarf merchants would make their way north, up the [Vales?] of the Anduin, before taking the road that ran through the vast forest to the east.

In those days the ancient woodland was still known as Greenwood the Great; its pathways were lit by sunshine and swept by soft winds. Thranduil, an Elven King ruled these lands and he welcomed all travelers to his realm.

There was much coming and going between the boarders of Greenwood and two settlements that lay to the North- a small city of Men called Dale and the great Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

Erebor, stronghold of Thror; the last King Under the Mountain. The beauty of the city was legend…Its wealth lay in the earth; in precious gems hewn from rock…diamond, emerald, ruby, sapphire…

I find this intriguing.

ETA: Gaaah! I didn't mean to click submit! Stupid computer! I was trying to preview post!

Ok, really quick before it doesn't let me edit the post anymore: I find this intriguing because, IMO it suggests that they had a slightly different opening for AUJ at some point. One that might have shown Greenwood the Great and Thranduil, before the Greenwood turned into Mirkwood and before Thranduil became so much of an isolationist. It probably would have only been a glimpse, but still...the potential! I wonder if they ever filmed that version, or if it was only in writing? Concept art? Something!

There's a little more I wanted to mention, but I'm afraid this thing is going to kick me out so I'll put it in another post in just a second.

*clicks submit on purpose this time*

Tidbit part 2 [In reply to]

Tidbit part 2 is about the second page of the Red Book that is featured in Cloaks and Daggers. It continues on from the first page and appears to be alternate narration for the EE scene of Thranduil in Erebor.

The AUJ EE scene says:

Quote

Thror named it the king’s jewel. He took it as a sign. A sign that his right to rule was divine. All would pay homage to him. Even the great Elven King, Thranduil.

As the great wealth of the dwarves grew, their store of goodwill ran thin. No one knows exactly what began the rift. The elves say the dwarves stole their treasure. The dwarves tell another tale. They say the Elf King refused to give them their rightful pay.
It is sad, Frodo, how old alliances can be broken. How friendships between peoples can be lost…and for what?

Meanwhile, the Red Book page says:

Quote

...and in great seams of gold running like rivers through stone. It was down deep...deep in the heard of the mountain they found it; more precious than any other...the King's jewel!

As the great wealth of the dwarves grew, their store of goodwill ran thin. No-one is sure exactly how it began, but slowly the days turned sour...and the watchful nights closed in.

Some say it was because Thranduil had grown jealous of Thror's great wealth...that Thror's love of gold had grown too fierce; a sickness had begun to grow within him. A sickness of the mind that made him [doubt?] his friends and drive away allies. And where sickness thrives...bad things will follow...

In this case it seems less like they planned to film anything extra and more like they just had the narration worded differently, and part of it was in a different order at some point.

Thoughts on either one of the tidbits?

My thoughts on both AAAAGH!!! BTW great finds! [In reply to]

Because if both had been filmed, I think it would have set in place the backstories and the rift a bit more - as even in DOS when Balin says "these are the halls of the Woodland realm - no-one leaves here without the king's consent" implies to me that Balin knew of the elven halls, which would have made sense re a previous trading relationship.

Great, great finds, thank you for posting! HeartHeartHeart

BTW I personally think that Bilbo's EE line "and for what" is cringeworthy for me, and I am glad they cut it from the TE version. For one thing for me it made Bilbo seem self-righteous and pompous, plus as line it is trite IMO. For another, by that time, in that Bilbo wasn't stupid, he would have known re both elves and dwarves there was far more culture and back-history re the conflicts, and there was more there than just fighting over gold and gems between the races. Plus he's holding the Ring, which has affected him, so he would know how an object of power can influence. Yep, I'm glad they cut that line.Unsure

Very interesting tidbits [In reply to]

thanks for breaking out the magnifying glass! It seems like they played around with the narrative as they debated what to emphasize as they shaped the back story. I'm especially intrigued by the line, "A sickness of the mind that made him doubt his friends and drive away allies." We didn't get that with Thror, but I'm thinking we might see that with Thorin. Unsure

Just got my copy, so I'm starting to dive into the details tonight. Already spotted a couple of interesting Thorin tidbits. Smile

And Thranduil looks like he's wearing some kind of woven mithril sash or cape with that armor. It almost looks bejeweled, though I have no doubt it's supposed to be practical for warfare. Now this is interesting - does Thranduil know who Gandalf is - I would assume so....and will Thranduil treat Gandalf with hauteur, or does Thranduil respect Gandalf? Or does none of that matter, considering there is an army of orcs heading their way?

I assume they would at least know of each other if they haven't met face to face up until now. Despite being an isolationist Thranduil is still a king after all. He has to have some idea who Middle Earth's big movers and shakers are, if nothing else, so that there aren't any political faux pas. That being said, I seriously doubt that Thranduil would treat Gandalf with hauteur, per se. Certainly not in the way he treated Thorin, whom he doesn't like that much to begin with and was his prisoner at the time of their most recent encounter. I imagine his interactions with Gandalf will be respectful on the level of how Gandalf and Elrond interact, except more formal. After all, Gandalf and Elrond, IMO treat each other as equals, but they also have a very friendly relationship. Thranduil seems like (at least at this point in the story) he doesn't have friends so much as he has allies. Therefore, I think he'll treat Gandalf with a level of respect deserving of someone who is an ally and an equal, but not necessarily be overly friendly with him at this point in time.

As far as what Gandalf is saying to Thranduil, I had theorized that maybe Gandalf had just shown up an was asking random-background-horn-blowing-elf (does he have a name? And why do I think he's going to die?Frown) where Thranduil was when Thranduil showed up, but it looks like they've already been in battle. That seems too late in the game for Gandalf to just be arriving from Dol Goldur, so maybe they're just discussing how outnumbered they are and what their next strategic move should be?

Quote
And Thranduil looks beautiful re the hair from the back. Exquisite costume with the fall of material. Plus re the WETA books those are some big arrows the elves are carrying = powerful.HeartHeartHeart

Yep, Thranduil's back is just as fabulous as his front!Angelic Still, I'm hoping that if WB continues releasing one picture or poster everyday until time for SDCC (Trailer, trailer, trailer!) we may get a nice official picture of Thranduil's front too!
