Even though I like Azog, Salmacis81 does make a great point. The inclusion of the ancient Gundabad orc was definitely not a requirement. The filmmakers could have swapped Azog for Bolg, turned that storyline into a more riveting thread, and thus avoid violating the sacred text. Nevertheless, I'm glad that they chose to involve The Defiler in this adaptation. I don't know, it just feels appropriate. The pale orc works for me too.

,,,but PJ still could have given us a "cool Orc chieftain with signs of personality", and just named him Bolg; that would have made a lot more book fans happier. And non-book fans/PJ fanatics wouldn't have cared a bit. I agree with you about Bard's character expansion; it was sorely needed and I felt they did a decent job of it. Tauriel, I would not have minded her so much if they hadn't gone and given her that awful love story. Let me ask you - if Azog had died at Azanulbizar in AUJ and Bolg was given the role of chasing the Dwarves, would you have been upset?

while you correctly pointed out that i am not particularly a fan of the Hobbit book,i can assure you that i am far from a Jackson fanatic.I just happent to love his vision of Middle Earth.I haven't seen most of his movies with the exception of Heavenly Creatures(loved it),King Kong(so and so) and Lovely Bones(really mediocre). As far as your Bolg question is concerned,i would not have been upset at all.

Because this is stuff I just trip over, just was trying to be polite-ish. And mind you, the majority of time I could care less what some performer is doing, in that figure it's a job, actors and actresses get paid for a job, I watch the job, so I don't care about their personal stuff. Taking a liking to PJ & co. has been a rarity for me. Katharine Heigl, who personally think was a disastrous choice for the arguably guilty pleasure of making a book like One for the Money into a film. E.g in idly reading about actors/actresses rumored to have an attitude, seems as tho it's wise to not. (And I am still suspicious re LOTR and Stuart Towsend: I was there rehearsing and training for two months, then was fired the day before filming began. After that I was told they wouldn't pay me because I was in breach of contract due to not having worked long enough. I had been having a rough time with them, so I was almost relieved to be leaving until they told me I wouldn't be paid. I have no good feelings for those people in charge, I really don't. The director wanted me and then apparently thought better of it because he really wanted someone 20 years older than me and completely different. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuart_Townsend) For KH see: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/...ked-up-nyquil-625405 There are other articles around like this *shrug*.

I agree that Azog was not an absolute requirement

but imo,one of the basic reasons Azog was included, was to avoid having the same orc villain for two or three films in a row.And i also agree that the pale Orc,nicely fits in the world of the Hobbit so far.

Maybe look @ Azog as a Simple Plot Device?

1. We know Ferney & Friend RATTED Out Gandalf & Thorin..but to...WHO? Azog. 2. The Campfire scene Where Balin gives us the The Back Story of the Battle @ the Eastern Moria Gate. AND we see that one of Azog Baddies reports IN about their whereabouts....(HE Then Gets Killed by Azog which Shows US, HIS First INTRO..)... 3. Raddy's appearence with THE Morgul Blade adds to the Threat...(For all Gandalf knows then, it might be Nazgul on their Trail?) 4. So, Raddy's Sacrifice with his Bunny Sled FORCES the company into a Rest @ Rivendell... You don't think Thorin would EVER Go THERE...without ORC's in pursuit? Jus' a BombyTheory
