been up to... 'too much' [In reply to] Can't Post

lol... I'm such an introvert in that too many things on my plate can just feel like a mountain to climb. It's not that I can't get them done. It's that it looks daunting and I'm worried I'll forget something and I try to set up systems so that I won't...

it's exhausting.

So, this past week:

BIRDING: Thanks to Brethil for identifying a bird we saw last weekend. I'll tell you, B.. I have seen both Ruby-crowned Kinglets and Golden-crowned Kinglets in the back and front yard this week. Two Hairy Woodpeckers visited the backyard for the suet and the dead branch in the neighbor's yard. And a robin built a nest over the light at the front door. Not sure how long that will last. I'm hoping to see a Black-crowned Night-Heron that's hanging out at Lake Nokomis/Minnehaha Creek.

GENEALOGY: I switched from my maternal grandmother's line to my paternal grandmother's line for kicks. I found the area of Wales where my great grandfather was from. I solved the mystery of the English last name with the Welsh residence: Father was English - Mother was Welsh. Then a distant cousin I met through genealogy got ahold of me and I dipped into a few individuals that I'd been puzzling out so that I could share info him. He's going to be in town next month and we're hoping to meet up. Also for kicks... I tried just sussing out ancestral lines without being dogmatic about gathering every shred of proof on them. I'll do that down the road. The oldest name I got was from the late 1500s and one of you might be interested that I found some ancestors in Lyme CT. :-)

WEDDING PLANS (son and financée): I shopped this week for the bridal shower and got my hair cut. It had been over a year since I'd had it cut and it was getting really long but pretty damaged on the ends. This is kind of a big step for me since I dropped into a 'do nothing' style of living in an attempt to save some money the last few years. And I hate looking at myself and my hair does nothing - it's a stubborn as I am. So trying to 'look nice' for the wedding kind of feels like a vain attempt. Vain in the sense of hopeless. And vain in the sense of egotistical. I am what I am. I'm sure my son loves me.

BLOGGING: not for me... for a friend. She started a blog and I've been helping her get it set up. She's done most of the work and I'm proud of her doggedness to figure stuff out. I've been a small back up here and there when I could determine where to travel for the help we need more easily than she could. I also stopped by a neighbor's house who was in a mild state of panic about how to deal with some information that had been retrieved from an old computer. It consisted of things like: how to insert a jump drive, how to make a new folder, how to copy and paste files, and how to determine dates of files. I think we did okay. She didn't look too overwhelmed when I left. :-)

SPRING: I just can't tell you how happy sun and warm weather have made me.

FOUNDERS DAY: I'll be posting a scavenger hunt later today on Main. And I hope to dig into the festivities the next few days.

Give me a plate of whatever you've got on the grill and a ginger beer. :-)

Party time!! [In reply to] Can't Post

Happy birthday to TORn! 15 years is an incredible milestone--glad to be a part of it!

Hey dernwyn--hope you're doing well! I'll have a lemonade, please. It's so close to being perfect Spring weather out there. *insert Grima quote about pale morning clinging to winter's chill*

Another busy weekend coming at me. Still hoping to watch a movie with a friend, to get away from the hectic stuff. Happy to be busy than have nothing at all!

Have a great weekend, all! Looking forward to Founders' Day shenanigans throughout the weekend.

PS: I've got the perfect avatar for the weekend in the works. Smile

My mom, dad and I got a good laugh out of the fire truck escort, so that helped with the stress a bit. It also helped (me anyway) that the firemen were all pretty good-looking! BlushWink

I'm definitely looking forward to taking a break from all the drama and having some fun with y'all on Founders Day! Yet another reason I'm glad I'm a member of TORn.Smile

*slurp* Oh that's perfect Dernwyn! [In reply to] Can't Post

Dangerous question to get me started on, about our birds..! Laugh Our yard regulars include: a community of 21 cardinals (now down to the alpha pair claiming out yard, but they will all hang again mid summer) about 9 bluejays (clever devils!), song sparrows, whitethroat sparrows, white-breasted nuthatches, downy woodpeckers (two pairs), hairy woodpeckers (pair), red-bellied woodpeckers (numerous pairs), yellow-bellied sapsuckers (family), a pair of yellow-shafted Northern flickers, numerous house finches, a family of chickadees, lots of mourning doves and rock pigeons, Cooper hawks and Sharpie hawks (ie: purveyors of said doves and pigeons). Scads of starlings (and their fostered cowbirds), HOSP, and grackles. Migrant wise we see kinglets at certain times of the year, rose breasted grosbeaks and fox sparrows. Last year we had red-breasted nuthatches but they are enjoying the Canada pine cone boom crop so none this year. The juncos headed back north last month but they spend the winter with us.
No turkeys though!!!! Which is why your pics were so cool to see! Cool Glad spring has finally come to our neck of the woods.

And book wise - I can't believe its 60 years. Nor can I believe how well known the name Tolkien is now, versus when I started reading. *Shamelessly* plugging the RR here, we set off on discussing FOTR on Thursday, July 24th: 60 years to the day!

The Third TORn Amateur Symposium kicks off this Sunday, April 13th, in the Reading Room. Come and join us for Tolkien-inspired writings!

Wowie! You *have* been busy! [In reply to] Can't Post

You reminded me that I need to try to look up a bird I saw the other day going to work - small with a bright orange breast and jet black other wise - looked like velvet. I don't think I've ever seen such a bird around here, and I saw another one today!

Good luck with all your activities and be sure to reserve some down-time for yourself (but no until after Founder's Day weekend, lol). LaughHeart

Actually, I have been hung up with some last minute wheeling and dealing with the caterers! Seems someone got the order wrong, and now I have to figure out what to do with these guys!

Can you all keep them busy whilst I rush out to set up the Buffet Table? I figured Fiesta was a good place for them for now!

Many thanks -- and here's to the Founders, Fellowship and Fun as we begin our celebration of all things TORn!
