If the CGI was of such quality that the sequence itself fails to work, I don't think so many people would have labeled it as one of the best action sequences of the year. We will have to see if the praise remains consistent as the general release date approaches, as more critics and audiences will have weighed in by that point.
Of course, not everyone will respond in the same way to certain scenes. There are scenes in AUJ that some fans love and others do not - like the Stone Giants. There's never going to be complete consensus on anything in these films, which is why I'm waiting to form my own opinion until I actually see DoS for myself.

Those moments are all enjoyable and gave me a smile. Although sadly the dwarves do not venture into Dale in DOS. The flashback to Dale's destruction occurs in Laketown.

I think in today's world, with Man of Steel and Spiderman, I think casual viewers love these types of scenes that go far beyond the realm of what fits this world.
Example: Bombur rolls on land like a bowling ball, knocks over orcs like pins, launches off a rock onto the other side of the river, rolls over more orcs and then stands upright, rips his arms through the barrel and begins fighting on land with a Ninja stance, using the barrel as a coat of armor while he wields two axes.
Another moment I mentioned before that stuck out: Thorin rides a wheel barrel down a river of molten gold (which, I hate to bring up SFX again, looked like pre-vis).

It takes place in the real world, yes, but it's about an unimaginably powerful, almost god-like superhero. It doesn't exactly stay within the realm of what "fits this world" because superheroes of that nature don't exist, so there's no reference for the type of destruction two super-powered beings cause in that film's third act.
We can't always use the "real world" as a comparison because some of these films take place in a heightened version of it - or sometimes another world entirely.

Why won't you answer people's questions if they want spoilers?
Posters did that to us last year and it was really annoying.
Some of us have to wait for over a month to see this film and would rather know...it's our choice right?

maybe i wouldn't like it in the context of a serious, grim battle or something but sounds like the barrel ride is just supposed to be a good ol' time.
who knows, though, i might see it and think it's too much or whatever.

whereas a bad shock can take you out of the moment and ruin your good time. For instance, going into An Unexpected, I didn't know Gandalf was going to mention the Five Wizards, or that Radagast was going to stern up and face down the Witch-King (could have been done with a little more flare, but whatever lol), or that Gandalf would turn Bilbo's smokering into a butterfly, and those and a number of other little surprises delighted me.... I DID know about Azog, thank God, and if I hadn't before hand, all the gems in the world wouldn't have fixed the movie for me, and I probably would have had to see it four times before even STARTING to like it for the good things that were in it.
I think Dolce (sorry spelling) wants to leave the delights for us to be thoroughly delighted by, while giving us fair warning about the things that might cause moments of disgust or dissatisfaction. Why not revealing the good bits of DOS and u decided to offer us the bad ones?Why didn't you also keep the bad bits for us to discover them during our viewing as well?That's a bit odd actually and a bit of unfair play

The man has gone full Lucas...
Cgi orcs are horrible -who the hell thought that was a good idea??

Most of the people who don't want to read spoilers on this board have left until they've seen the film, including many of our more notable regulars. We have remained behind because we are not averse to such spoilers and are willing to read them. Numerous posters in this thread have said as much, so why not accommodate them?

Reviews like this tend to lower everyone's expectations a bit, and that's always a good thing. It's also very useful if you can prepare yourself in advance for some of the bad things in the movie.

I mean, really, some excues just... What is the point of him distinguishing (Thranduil that is) Elf types if they are all the same. I don't like it when they do things that are intentionally confusing and misleading... and WRONG. Tauriel is now on par with the direct descendant of Melain. Okay. All right. She is just like The High Elves of The First Age, I suppose, except not as good at working metal . ... even in the slightest established and connected to Aman in the movies nor is it even hinted at that it has anything to do with some hierarchy among the Elves.
In the movieverse it makes perfect sense that a fading, almost dying character, sees something as noble as an Elf that way, even if she is of "lesser" heritage.

Sorry, but sometimes this can really come across a bit patronizing. But I guess I am the same way reversed.
I am not making excuses. I simply have another opinion. That - for example - what you call wrong does not feel wrong for the movie to me and imho does not hurt the professor's mythology.
Imho 99% of the audience will not care or think whether Arwen and Tauriel are on par or not (the whole hierarchy thing is imho anyway a totally false interpreted idea of Tolkien's idea of lines, heritages and beings), and a huge part of the remaining percentage will not automatically conclude that they are "the same" in that sense.
"She is just like the High Elves of the Third Age". Because Kili sees her radiating in a close-to-death moment? Well, yeah whatever... for me it really is creating issues where non exist but when it comes to those hierarchy things we can probably argue till the cows come home ;)

He made 3 brilliant films so when it came to making the new films everyone just trusted his judgment...
PJ really missfired with these films imo. He turned middle earth into a laughing stock.
The lotr's films felt real. The world felt lived in. The academy even rewarded the films!
Sadly PJ now has no-one to tap him on the shoulder and say "you've gone too far mate"
Just like the Star Wars prequels, I will watch them then pretend they don't exist.
