Your story reminds me of the scalloped potatoes put in front of my sister and I for three straight meals till we ate it. Don't eat scalloped potatoes to this day. I glanced a little at Glover's story when I was checking out "The Magpies." I hadn't heard the word threnody before. I suppose it's related to hymnody which I've seen used somewhere but I can't remember where. I suppose Eowyn's dirge woud be a threnody, right? In which case, we bring the thread full circle. :-)

I just came over here to TORn looking for sane human beings because of an upsetting post by someone I thought was a friend on Facebook. Boy, did I want to respond! Boy, did I know I'd be stringing myself up if I did! I spend way too much time brooding over this sort of thing, I'm afraid. Thank you, thank you, all you good-humored and friendly people here who can so intelligently and wittily take the edge off! I don't contribute an awful lot to TORn these days. There's just too much going on for me to keep up with, mainly, although I, too, am disturbed by some of the negativity. And, after ten years here, I feel as though I've said my piece. But I'm here several times a day doing what I hope is quality lurking. Take care of yourselves!

If anyone else wants to refer to "quality lurking", that's fine by me. But I think the best term invented recently is "modar". And I couldn't even tell you who came up with it.

modar.... 'twas i, lilyfairbairn! : ) glad you like. : ) .
aka. fili orc-enshield +++++++++++++++++++ the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield." this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel telpemairo

Glad to have you! Sympathies on the unkind and upsetting FB stuff. I think that the mix of impulsivity plus lack of context and verbal cues can lead to hurt feelings at times. A risk of our electronic conversing!!!! I know you didn't earn anything unkind.... Extra Big Group Hug for you. At least you know you always have us. We may be nuts but hey, it makes the TORn-scape fun. I really like the quality lurking idea.
Is there a Tolkien topic that you have wanted to look into more deeply, and write about your thoughts on it? If so, we'd like to hear from you for the next TORn Amateur Symposium- coming in November. Happy writing!

And there are some topics I just *know* better than to click on so I don't! One of my tactics is to check the boards on my ipod on which I'm not signed in. I can read but not post. I sometimes check things I know might irritate me on the ipod and I can vent without temptation to post. I actually spent 3 months or so -- in the somewhat recent past -- signed out completely and at all times. I was so annoyed and angry at what I was seeing that I had to take away any possibility of my posting a reply. Sorry you had to take a bit of a 'leave' there. Whenever it was we missed seeing you. When in doubt come hang in the RR. Clever to use your Ipod that way.

It's a major reason for my final days Bomby wants to open a B & B near Hobbiton. Since many if not all would be visiting there if you haven't already? Bomby Wishes that maybe PJ & Richard Taylor could get started a Goldberry's Wish Foundation (A non-profit run by TORn) Like that little girl with Cancer people could be sent there to while..awhile...some of their...Last ...Days visiting the Shire. This Image is becoming Clearer and stronger each day. It seems it's what Bomby is SUPPOSED to do with the time given to liil' Ol'me.

(I see you still remember that comment!) and there's nuts in a bad way, which is what got me on Facebook. I've now set that person's posts to not show up in my news feed. At least it wasn't a personal remark that got to me. I'd like to bottle and give away for free the civility of TORn. All hail the modar!

Even people who I thought were above snide snark have been saying some pretty ugly things lately. And, darn my principles, I can't respond because, unlike some people, I care whether I offend people. Even if I do think they're ignorant _______s. TORn is a haven, of sorts, although there are still those who take it far too much to heart that people don't agree with them on everything.

...a lot of my posts do end up moderated, and quite deservedly so. BTW, some other boiled down responses: "What a waste of electrons." "I’m sure your unique and shocking perspective is almost as astoundingly original as what you got pierced this week." "Unfortunately, I don’t have enough colored blocks and hand puppets currently available to explain it to you." "Silly me, I was still under the impression that 'While you've made some good points, I disagree with you on some parts. Here's why' was the way adults held discussions." "I’m kind of amazed that you are still able to type so legibly considering how far up your a$$ your head is. (\ /) ( . .) c(")(") "You bore the bunny." "Needs more cowbell."

...those people who glibly excuse their own crude rudeness as "just being honest, that's the way I am" then get their own knickers in a crying twist whenever the foot's in the other shoe. The worst is the hyper-umbrage-taking, super-self-aggrandizing "Tolkein's [sic] greatest fan" who doesn't appear to have read the books too closely.

I have nightmares about accidentally clicking the "Submit" button and then the computer crashes so that I can't go back and "Unsubmit." A lot of the stuff posted on Facebook is garbage, but I get a chuckle out of the names of pages that get shared. One of my current favorite page names is "When you read someone's post and think 'Oh, shut the ____ up!'" I feel that way regularly.

Your second suggestion is a burn of beauty!
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. For Facebook I always end my browsing by looking at the Hobbit movie and PJ's profile pages--sometimes the actors, too. It's actually a great way for me to transition from RL things to TORn when I'm online. I guess there is some fluidity there, for me. Even if they haven't posted new stuff, at least it's something I enjoy. Another strategy I've been using lately--which I'm quite fond of--is skipping the Facebook part of that process.
