just some comments about comments

i absolutely acknowledge any poster's right to post negative comments about the appearance of a celebrity / actor / etc., as long as they are in accordance with the boards rules of conduct. having said that, i'd like to offer counterpoint to negative comments that i frequently see on the boards. things like... someone is ugly or weird-looking or... well, i'm sure you've seen plenty of examples. it really disheartens me to see posts that disparage someone's physical appearance -- including the ones that critique beauty and try to assess who is more "perfect," who is more "beautiful," "better-looking." this seems a fool's errand, and also a poisonous one. aside from the ridiculousness of judging someone by that person's appearance in such a superficial way, beauty and appeal are of course very variable. what one person does not find appealing, another might. also, as we grow and experience life, we appreciate our fellow human beings more, and aren't so straightjacketed to think only certain forms are worth being admired. i'm trying not to be too specific, because i don't mean to single out any poster in particular. i just want to go on record to say that it would be a step in the right direction to making the world a better place if we didn't belittle other people's looks, and set ourselves up as judges on the appearance of other human beings. thanks for listening. .
aka. fili orc-enshield +++++++++++++++++++ the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield." this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel telpemairo

about any person connected to the movies, one cannot say much at all about any member of the boards. That's the rules. I can 'debate' a point but sometimes, the *point* being debated isn't what I want to talk about. I want to talk about how we are behaving. About the tones we take and the words we choose. I can't really address that without straying too close the guidelines. I'm not complaining. The rules exist for a reason and I think they're good reasons. But I can't open my mouth and pretend to want to talk about anything but what my brain is screaming. And my screaming brain will get me in trouble.

Especially when it could be boiled down into small bites like: "Way to encourage discussion!" "Could you BE any ___ [ruder/more juvenile/more condescending/ judgmental, etc.] ___?" "Are you always this big an ass?" [Your Argument is Invalid meme] "Show your arse in public like this often?" "Wow. Is your TV picture as black & white as your thinking?" "Grow the heck up." "I have two words for you: _____ _____." [rude acronym or initials] and anything more wordy and polite would likely just be a waste of my time. Muttering, rolling my eyes, and working the mouse instead of the keyboard is the only solution that works for the boards. Sometimes I just wait for Darkstone to show up. He seems to know juuuuuust exactly where the Admins have drawn the 'acceptable level of snark - too much snark' line that I'm always afraid of crossing. =)

It's great to let off some steam, everyone. Lets just not get too specific as to who you're letting steam off about or it doesn't take much to put 2 & 2 together and figure out who they are. *That* would be against the terms of service. Thanks!

i will also add this irony.... the vast majority of people who seem to take such delight and authority in being the arbiters of the physical appearance of their fellow human beings would themselves fall very short of the exceedingly narrow standards of beauty to which they adhere. i'm thankful to see a lot of like-minded responses on this thread, as it's been very frustrating observing this unkind (and sometimes cruel) behavior. nice to know i'm not the only one who is very much bothered by it. .

Yes. me too. Correct: at times its best to walk away come back and start again! And there are some topics I just *know* better than to click on so I don't! BTW that talking starling clip is quite amazing. At least 80% of the time when we hear a very unusual call we ID it as a starling! (We have blue jays who imitate Hawk-alert-calls to scare other birds, and then the Starlings imitate the Blue Jays imitating the Hawk-scare and scare them...a lively bunch!)

And I don't just say that myself. When I lived very close to the central fire station, the local starlings were dab hands at imitating the station alarm, loudspeaker announcements, and fire engine sirens, as well as the various ringtones of the phones of those living nearby. They were also very good at imitating a lot of other birds, most notably fantails. They often tricked me, but some of them gave themselves away with a tell-tale starling *gurgle* at the end of the 'fantail' song.

but I can't find the recording I am after. It is Denis Glover reading the poem himself. When I was about 12, my teacher decided to play us the recording. Unfortunately it did not have the effect he wanted, as we all dissolved into hysterical laughter when we heard Glover reading the 'quardle oodle...' part, in a croaky, bird-like voice. And of course, he has to repeat it a number of times in the poem. Our teacher got very cross, took the needle off the record and put it back to the beginning and said we must listen again from the start, without laughing. Of course, you will know what happens when you tell a bunch of 12 year olds not to laugh. We listened to that record a number of times, as the poor teacher got redder and grumpier. He was actually a very good teacher, with a great love for poetry and literature, so looking back now I think he was terribly upset because he really loved the poem. Thankfully, I had already been exposed to 'The Magpies', as well as some of Glover's others. My mother loved his poem Threnody, which is another very well known one. She lived in the area described in the poem.
THRENODY In Plimmerton, in Plimmerton, The little penguins play, And one dead albatross was found At Karehana Bay. In Plimmerton, in Plimmerton, The seabirds haunt the cave, And often in the summertime The penguins ride the wave. In Plimmerton, in Plimmerton, The penguins live, they say, But one dead albatross they found At Karehana Bay. Dennis Glover, 1964 Denis Glover was a colourful character. He founded The Caxton Press here in Christchurch, a very important publisher of creative writing. Later, he was famous for his drinking and generally dreadful behaviour. But he leaves a great body of work. Oh look - we've turned this into a thread about birds and about poems. Nice.

Your story reminds me of the scalloped potatoes put in front of my sister and I for three straight meals till we ate it. Don't eat scalloped potatoes to this day. I glanced a little at Glover's story when I was checking out "The Magpies." I hadn't heard the word threnody before. I suppose it's related to hymnody which I've seen used somewhere but I can't remember where. I suppose Eowyn's dirge woud be a threnody, right? In which case, we bring the thread full circle. :-)

I just came over here to TORn looking for sane human beings because of an upsetting post by someone I thought was a friend on Facebook. Boy, did I want to respond! Boy, did I know I'd be stringing myself up if I did! I spend way too much time brooding over this sort of thing, I'm afraid. Thank you, thank you, all you good-humored and friendly people here who can so intelligently and wittily take the edge off! I don't contribute an awful lot to TORn these days. There's just too much going on for me to keep up with, mainly, although I, too, am disturbed by some of the negativity. And, after ten years here, I feel as though I've said my piece. But I'm here several times a day doing what I hope is quality lurking. Take care of yourselves!

If anyone else wants to refer to "quality lurking", that's fine by me. But I think the best term invented recently is "modar". And I couldn't even tell you who came up with it.

aka. fili orc-enshield +++++++++++++++++++ the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield." this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel telpemairo

Glad to have you! Sympathies on the unkind and upsetting FB stuff. I think that the mix of impulsivity plus lack of context and verbal cues can lead to hurt feelings at times. A risk of our electronic conversing!!!! I know you didn't earn anything unkind.... Extra Big Group Hug for you. At least you know you always have us. We may be nuts but hey, it makes the TORn-scape fun. I really like the quality lurking idea.

And there are some topics I just *know* better than to click on so I don't! One of my tactics is to check the boards on my ipod on which I'm not signed in. I can read but not post. I sometimes check things I know might irritate me on the ipod and I can vent without temptation to post. I actually spent 3 months or so -- in the somewhat recent past -- signed out completely and at all times. I was so annoyed and angry at what I was seeing that I had to take away any possibility of my posting a reply. Sorry you had to take a bit of a 'leave' there. Whenever it was we missed seeing you. When in doubt come hang in the RR. Clever to use your Ipod that way.

Even people who I thought were above snide snark have been saying some pretty ugly things lately. And, darn my principles, I can't respond because, unlike some people, I care whether I offend people. Even if I do think they're ignorant _______s. TORn is a haven, of sorts, although there are still those who take it far too much to heart that people don't agree with them on everything.

I have nightmares about accidentally clicking the "Submit" button and then the computer crashes so that I can't go back and "Unsubmit." A lot of the stuff posted on Facebook is garbage, but I get a chuckle out of the names of pages that get shared. One of my current favorite page names is "When you read someone's post and think 'Oh, shut the ____ up!'" I feel that way regularly.

For Facebook I always end my browsing by looking at the Hobbit movie and PJ's profile pages--sometimes the actors, too. It's actually a great way for me to transition from RL things to TORn when I'm online. I guess there is some fluidity there, for me. Even if they haven't posted new stuff, at least it's something I enjoy. Another strategy I've been using lately--which I'm quite fond of--is skipping the Facebook part of that process.

I truly don't understand how someone can make what they surely know is a provocative, snide, snarly, accusatory, etc. post and then call 'out of bounds' for any thing even approaching the same tone in response. My thought lately has been about all the people "defending Tolkien" while using a completely aggressive and insulting tone. I wonder if they really believe Tolkien would approve of being defended in that manner. Especially when it's combined with poor spelling and grammar, lol.

and you'll find the worst of the worst there. But there's a handful of good hearted, well spoken, well read Tolkien fans on the LOTR movie boards. They are great people. When I was signed out of TORn, oddly enough, I was having really satisfying conversation there. There is almost no moderation so when someone wants to be trollish they gets to be. But there's an ignore button that works like magic. The Hobbit movie boards, being more active, are more mixed.

"The way adults held discussions".. that's, like, adult situations, isn't it? We Modar have to edit ourselves, as well as editing others (sometimes quite reluctantly). The snark I have had to edit out of my own posts before hitting the submit button could fill a book: a long and highly exasperated book. People have sometimes asked what it takes to be a Mod - and while we usually don't reply with "The ability to reply calmly and politely when all you really want to do is reach through your computer screen and whap someone upside the head", it ranks high on the list of qualifications.
Silverlode "Dark is the water of Kheled-zâram, and cold are the springs of Kibil-nâla, and fair were the many-pillared halls of Khazad-dűm in Elder Days before the fall of mighty kings beneath the stone."

Yes, a modar's job is *extremely* difficult. and it unfortunately makes them a special target of trolls. Trolls will often share a common outside forum where they can post and link to their "victories". One type of "victory" that earns bragging rights among trolls is getting a modar on another site to lose their cool. (Yes, they do keep count and post statistics.)

posting a thread regarding Board Etiquette in the Reading Room because there was a feeling that newbies (like me at the time, and now again ) were stayed in lurking mode due to the level of discourse and the fact that some of the Tolkien defenders were very... uh... defensive. Now me, I had already jumped right in, as a Tolkien novice, and started asking questions and giving my insights as a first (or second) time only reader and a lover of the movies. I figured all I could offer was a fresh viewpoint from someone who was still looking at the forest and hadn't started naming the trees. My etiquette thread basically asked if those on the board were bothered by the Pippenish newbies. The good Reverend kindly replied that he was glad to have new insight, hoped we learned something because he had and if he ever made someone feel unwelcome we were to feel free to make rude comments about his children. Now there was someone who had his head on straight. I love this stuff, but geez, if it becomes so much a part of my life that I have to get nasty to defend a point (?!) then someone please tell my hubby to drug my coffee and lock me up.
