I once briefly wondered how that last dread bit might have turned out.

... until Sauron reached "Under the Misty Mountains" on his to-do list of Places To Search For The Ring. And he'd be thorough. Or until Gollum was caught by a goblin because the Ring had slipped from his finger at the critical moment. Remember, the Ring wants to get back to Sauron, and as Gandalf said, in "The Shadow of the Past", Gollum wasn't furthering its agenda much by lurking down there in the dark ad infinitum. "So now, when its master was awake once more and sending his dark thoughts out from Mirkwood, it abandoned Gollum"... A goblin wouldn't be much good to the Ring in him- (or her-) self, but might start a chain of the Ring passing (no doubt with the usual quota of murders and treacheries) from hand to hand amongst the goblin and orc tribes under the Mountains and thence out into the light, perhaps when an orc chieftain was killed by a Man during a night raid on the Woodmen's villages. Or it could even have ended up on the hand of the Balrog, which would have been - interesting - to say the least. "Hear me, hounds of Sauron, Gandalf is here! Fly if you value your foul skins, I will shrivel you from tail to snout if you step within this circle!" "Do not be to eager to deal out death in judgement. Even the very wise cannot see all ends."

then yeah. The notion that Balrogs are somehow dumb is one a partly blame some aspects of the film and artistic depiction for. I like the movie Balrog, but he didn't need a tail, and he aught not to have roared so much. lol. These were Maiar from before the world, who had a hand in its making. They were Morgoth's Captains, lieutenants, battle Commanders/Champions and "Proud Thanes." They were also powerful sorcerers, as the confrontation near Marzabul displayed plainly. If Dragons, Wargs, Orcs, and even certain types of spiders could effecively think at a high functioning level, there can be no doubt that these first tier Maiar Demons could contemplate plenty. The Balrog would almost certainly have also recognized the general nature of the Ring, even without knowing the details of its lore, just as he recognized the nature of Gandalf's shutting spell. THe only real question is. . . could the Ring grow enough to fit itself on a size 50 finger? lol What's next?!? Couldn't resist stirring the pot! But imagining the Balrog with that kind of power is very interesting indeed! I wonder if it had the kind of intelligence required to set up an organized rival faction to Sauron... "Hear me, hounds of Sauron, Gandalf is here! Fly if you value your foul skins, I will shrivel you from tail to snout if you step within this circle!" Yes, I'd have liked a cat. Maybe a descendant of the cats of Queen Bereuthuil *coughs the rest of her name to mask any mispronounciation*

Gandalf would have gone back to Bree to find a burglar, and so LOTR would be about Bob, his cat, and his best friend Nob taking the ring to Mordor, along with fellow Bree hobbits Willie Banks and Whatsisname Underhill. Since they'd be starting from Bree, no Old Forest, and NO BOMBADIL!!! Again, no Bombadil. Good or bad, take that as you will, but IMHO the Fellowship definitely needed a cat. Gandalf took years of research and theorizing before he was convinced Bilbo's ring was the One, and he had to make a fireplace test to be 100% certain, or maybe that was just to convince Frodo. So given that he was on the lookout for it but didn't sense it (and it didn't seem to alarm Narya), would a Balrog who's been underground since the end of the 1st Age really discern what the Ring was? I don't think he'd be attuned to it like the Nazgul are.

nature, I did not mean to say he would know it was Sauron's Great Ring, only that he would surely have recognized, much more so than say Bilbo, that it was an instrument of great power, and that it is very likely that he would have sensed Sauron's influence on it, perhaps being more familliar with the essence of Sauron than the Wizards, for having had a longer past association with him.

That certainly makes sense. It would be handy if the Balrog took the One Ring and put it on. Sooner or later he'd have to fight Sauron. I can't imagine him just turning it over since the Ring doesn't play that way. I wouldn't speculate on who would win, it would just make an interesting fight, though of course everyone in between them would pay the price, and whoever won would be even nastier than before.
