aka. fili orc-enshield
+++++++++++++++++++
the scene, as i understand it, is exceptionally well-written. fili (in sort of a callback to the scene with the eagles), calls out "thorRIIIIIIN!!!" just as he sees the pale orc veer in for the kill. he picks up the severed arm of an orc which is lying on the ground, swings it up in desperation, effectively blocking the pale orc's blow. and thus, forever after, fili is known as "fili orc-enshield."

this earns him deep respect from his hard-to-please uncle. as well as a hug. kili wipes his boots on the pale orc's glory box. -- maciliel telpemairo

According to an authoritative source (Wikipedia), [In reply to] Can't Post

some of them went north to live in isolation on the Orkney Islands and took up respectable occupations such as farming and fishing. Also, they no longer identify strongly with lands to the south.

Quote
Orcadians

Main article: Orcadians
An Orcadian is a native of Orkney, a term that reflects a strongly held identity with a tradition of understatement.[140] Although the annexation of the earldom by Scotland took place over five centuries ago in 1472, most Orcadians regard themselves as Orcadians first and Scots second.[141]
When an Orcadian speaks of "Scotland", they are talking about the land to the immediate south of the Pentland Firth. When an Orcadian speaks of "the mainland", they mean Mainland, Orkney.[142] Tartan, clans, bagpipes and the like are traditions of the Scottish Highlands and are not a part of the islands' indigenous culture.[143] However, at least two tartans with Orkney connections have been registered and a tartan has been designed for Sanday by one of the island's residents,[144][145][146] and there are pipe bands in Orkney.[147][148]
Native Orcadians refer to the non-native residents of the islands as "ferry loupers", a term that has been in use for nearly two centuries at least.[149][Notes 23] This designation is celebrated in the Orkney Trout Fishing Association's "Ferryloupers Trophy", suggesting that although it can be used in a derogatory manner, it is more often a light-hearted expression.[150]

They get paid to inflict pain. Laugh Just kidding.

Although the thought of Uruk-hair cheerleaders is a sight to imagine... Has anyone tried to photoshop this?

Then again, they could have become sea monters. My Sunday crossword listed 'orc' as the answer to that hint. Guess Morgoth and Sauron went a little too far with that genetic engineering!

"I had forgotten that. It is hard to be sure of anything among so many marvels. The world is all grown strange. Elf and Dwarf in company walk in our daily fields; and folk speak with the Lady of the Wood and yet live; and the Sword comes back to war that was broken in the long ages ere the fathers of our fathers rode into the Mark! How shall a man judge what to do in such times?"

"As he ever has judged. Good and ill have not changed since yesteryear; nor are they one thing among Elves and Dwarves and another among Men. It is a man's part to discern them, as much in the Golden Wood as in his own house."

JRRT's Words [In reply to] Can't Post

"But Orcs and Trolls spoke as they would, without love of words or things; and their language was actually more degraded and filthy than I have shown it. I do not suppose that any will wish for a closer rendering, though models are easy to find. Much the same sort of talk can still be heard among the orc-minded; dreary and repetitive with hatred and contempt, too long removed from good to retain even verbal vigour, save in the ears of those to whom only the squalid sounds strong. "

One of the defects in the Hobbit film is having Azog & Co. speaking (David Salo's implementation of) the Black Speech of Mordor. It is inconsistent with the Goblin-town denizens (and the Lord of the Rings film orcs) in the first place, not in keeping with Tolkien's characterization of orc-speech in the second place, and distances us from the dialogue dramatically (due to subtitling) in the third place.
